Apparently, Yonetani had a difficult time approving GaoGaiGar's black color and Goldion Hammer during the development cycle.
http://sunrise-world.net/feature/feature.php?id=8870
DeepL: So "GaoGaiGar" was formed by verifying the detailed ideas that came up during the meetings.
Yonetani There were a lot of people's opinions involved. I also thought, "This is what I want to do! I also drew things like, "This is what I want to do! But there were some things that were not understood. For example, the Goldion hammer was a no-go in the early stages. I was told, "You can't make a toy out of it because it's not cool. Nowadays, thanks to American comic movies such as "The Mighty Thor," it is recognized as a respectable weapon, but at the time, it was a tough call. We had to come up with a rough idea of how the robot would transform and fight. Takara (now Takara Tomy) finally relented. I was also told at first that black robots were no good. They said that since it was aimed at children, it would not sell unless it had a flashy color. But as we made prototypes, they understood the coolness of the robot, and gradually Takara got on board and agreed with us.
--Was it a lot of work to make a series that took a year to complete?
Yonetani: When I finished "GaoGaiGar", I was a wreck both physically and mentally. I wrote down my feelings and momentum in the storyboards from that time. Things like "I dedicate this work to my life" were written in big letters. When I look at it now, I think, "This is so stupid it's great" (laughs). (laughs) No, I couldn't have done it unless I had that much courage to move forward in a straight line of stupidity. I stayed in every day to work on it, and it was like, "Listen to my soul! It was like, "Listen to my soul! During the process, some of the production staff were hospitalized, so while it was fun, it was also a very hard environment to work in.

Wait, was the Goldion Hammer planned WHILE GGG was being developed, or are these separate-
>hammer was a big risk back then
>black uncool
As much as I hate executives and "we totally know what children like", these sound like acceptable concerns? Maybe I'm just lenient because they relented in the end. I know for Might Gaine and uhhh Da Garn? the final antag was named after Takara or Sunrise or one of the companies a few times haha.

I was fond of Volfogg's big boat, even if he's not as strong, it's a neat command vessel that's really cool. Wish he got a Shadowmaru tier upgrade with a boat, with the show acknowledging that he's not always as strong as the symmetrical fusion folks. (Why do I remember it this way? I'm p sure it was Big Volfogg not saving the day as often, or him needing backup from trucks that sometimes saved, but maybe I'm wrong about this)

What's with that? And hm, not sure if the early design was a lot less ninja-centric, or if they just came up with a purple bot that wasn't a ninja at the time. Purple and white IS a bit strange... but somehow it works out for him, I'm happy. Pleased as punch with Smolfogg's final head too, I love Ultra Magnus' antennas, but Volfogg looks friendlier without them.

Posting more Yonetani interview info right now.
DeepL translation: Interviewer: Actually, I am very nervous. I am very nervous because I have seen all of his works since I was a child, and now I get to interview the director.
"The King of Braves Gaogaigar" is a long-loved science fiction super robot anime that continues to "Gaogaigar vs. Betterman" serialized in Yatate Bunko, the eighth in the Brave series. At the time of the broadcast, I felt a little uncomfortable with the previous Brave series. Speaking of realism, of course, if you have the courage! !! It's cool, but I remember seeing it with a lot of excitement every time! First of all, please tell us about the birth of such "Gaogaigar".
Yonetani: Where should I start - I don't know. At the time of planning, there was a situation where there was a change in structure within Sunrise and the company became part of the Bandai Group. I think it was right around the time of "Dagwon" that we were deciding whether or not to continue with the lineup sponsored by Takara and Kabaya, and we were just barely able to create the last in the series of "Yuusha".
So, there seemed to be a lot of enthusiasm in the division to make the show bloom for the last time. However, I did not want to involve the children, the viewers, in adult affairs, so although the budget was low, I made minor changes in the use of DN (dupe negatives) in each show so that both adults and children could enjoy the show.
Thanks to this, toys (toys and hobbies) were also sold.
>>
Still funny how they wanted to include a gun as a side character
>>
Cont.: Interviewer: I have the impression that "GaoGaiGar" was very popular at the time, but the budget was still low.
Yonetani: The budget is fixed from the beginning and will not fluctuate whether the product sells or not. We have to make do with what we have. The shiny toy "Goldran" did well, but the video did not sell well, and it was tough for Victor, the software manufacturer.
Dagwon was very popular among women, so the video sold well, but the toy sales were not so good. So I felt again that we needed to shift the direction of our productions to one that would be supported by children, our original target audience, and not be overly conscious of the high target audience.
Ryosuke Takahashi, who had directed "Armored Trooper Votoms" and other works, approached me and said, "I'll just be the producer, please direct it. I had known Ryosuke for "Samurai Troopers" but had never worked with him directly. I was sure that I would be able to work with him. I think that after being turned down by others, he remembered that he was there and made me an offer (laughs).
>>
Part 3: Interviewer: (laughs)
Yonetani: At the time, I was working on an OVA called "Doraemon: Nobita and the Future Notebook," a robot-like OVA related to the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, which did not look like "Doraemon," and I had always wanted to make a robot as a mecha one day. I always had a little bit of an ambition, "If I were to make it, I would want to do it this way! I had a bit of an ambition to make something like this if I were to make it myself.
Interviewer: Wow! So that's how you ended up with "GaoGaiGar"! Is there a reason why you felt that the conventional robots were not good enough?
Yonetani: Robots are interesting for their mechanical mechanisms, but they are treated like characters made of steel, and it was difficult to decide at the script stage what characteristics and functions they would have as a mechanism, and I felt that there was a lack of realism.
So, in the story, Sueo Ushiyama says, "Robots smell like oil when you get close to them, don't they? I made sure to include lines such as "What would it feel like if it actually existed as a mecha? I made sure to include such "what it would feel like if it actually existed as a mecha.
>>
After a trillion years, I'm finally at the Kagerou mission.. but is there anything I should get/do first to have more people welcome him? I've never played this mission before.

>>20847877
Why does it look not-as-cool when on that greebly bug-eyed thing.. maybe I'm just lacking warmth to it?
>>
>>20847925
As far as I can tell Kagero's mission plays out mostly the same regardless of who you have recruited. Maybe if you put it off until extremely late and have other former enemies like Anti and the L-Gaim brigade join, you'll get some dialogue, but I doubt it and it probably wouldn't be worth it anyway
>>
>>20847930
So I can get him immediately after dinner??

>>20847907
>a gun as a side character
That seems fun but like, how often would it come up in a kids' show? Just wandering on the protag's desk chatting and turning into a gun when someone passes, a few lines before transforming into Gun, I don't see how often it would have been able to really shine in a natural sort of way. A camera MAYBE, since like, "hey look at that isn't that cool", "what a lovely day", or just doing reconnaissance.

3000-7200 I assume means price ranges for toys to sell. Trainbots seem fun, and the gun/barrel thing is fascinating.
>>
Part 4: Interviewer: So those are the factors that make it feel "kind of real!"
Yonetani: That's right. There was an unspoken rule that the robots would become stronger just by being attached to each other, but we valued the theoretical reason why the robots would inevitably become stronger and cooler because they would combine in this way.
For example, we tried to stimulate the hearts of riders by showing them how the Linergao (Shinkansen), which in toys can only be plugged in and combined, can become a convincing combination.
Interviewer: That was so cool! The bullet train going into the tunnel was also very shocking. I was also very impressed with the gimmick of the toys combining with each other, all of which were reproduced from the animation.
Yonetani: I think the makers of all the toys up to that point have said, "We want you to reproduce the gimmicks without changing them," but that doesn't mean that they will be reproduced exactly as they are.
Until now, it seems that the emphasis has been on the hero rather than the mecha, and I think it was difficult to add reality, but "GaoGaiGar" was created with a lot of attention to detail: the lights when the bullet train enters the body, the colors change with the lights in the tunnel, and sparks fly every time steam is emitted.
The toy does not have rails inside the fuselage, nor is it made to look like a tunnel, but we created a picture that plunges into the Shinkansen subjectively so that children who love trains can let their imaginations run wild. It is as if the rails that should not be there can be seen inside the toy.
>>
Part 5: Interviewer: You can all that content!
Yonetani: We valued the parts that were painted but could express texture.
Until then, the Yuusha series required 5,000 to 6,000 drawings per episode, which was quite costly, and if we did not reduce the number of paintings, we would have been in the red in terms of budget.
In "GaoGaiGar," the number of drawings was reduced to the extent that the paint was divided into many detailed parts, and the background of the secret base was used over and over again, but we were conscious of expressing the differences by arranging it in subtle ways and showing the differences without spending a lot of money, putting in a lot of effort, and not cutting corners.
Interviewer: (Laugh)
Yonetani: Since it was not digital like now, the backgrounds on paper became more and more scratched every time they were photographed, and it was very difficult for the paint to peel off. When the background became tattered, I tried to replace it with a color photocopy, but since photocopying technology and ink quality were not as good as they are now, the texture ended up being completely different, and I could not use it.
We also made detailed adjustments to the animation, resulting in an average of 3,799 drawings, the fewest among the Yuusha series (laughs).

Tempted to look into Tryon 3 as a GGG or Brave substitute, wondering if any gunpla might be a good stand-in for J-Decker...
>>
Part 6: Interviewer: (Laugh)
Yonetani: Doesn't it look like that?
Interviewer: It doesn't look like that at all!
Yonetani: It is wisdom to be creative at the time of storyboarding and to use camera work to make it seem as if it is moving in the drawing. The staff may have been disappointed by the increased complexity of the work, but this is a creative site. If the work is patterned, the work will fall into a rut.
Interviewer: Eek!!! I want to watch the TV series again. Thank you! I just wanted to ask you, "GaoGaiGar" goes from the first episode to the final fusion. Was there an intention behind that?
Yonetani: By the way, I didn't want to "continue" and pull it until the next week (laughs) At that time, it wasn't the time when video was popular, so for children who might not be able to see it next time, such as attending a cram school. I wanted to show as much as I could to the extent that I was satisfied with it once. Therefore, even in the case of "continue", I tried to make sure that there was a place to show it.
Interviewer: Suddenly, from the very first episode, "Fusion, cool! Success! No way we're going to lose?" That's why I was so drawn to the first episode. I guess the fact that this is the first episode is what drew me in.
>>
Part 7: Yonetani: I think this is because we make our enemies convincing that they have a reason to win, instead of just getting screwed over.
If you are only there to be beaten, you will never feel the tension that the protagonist's side might lose. Absolute victory is essential to feel happy and secure, but in this work, we valued the value of victory that is grasped in a thrilling and exciting situation. That is why I was particular about the design of the enemies, wanting to emphasize the atmosphere of a raspo-like boss rather than an easy-to-win appearance.
I tried to convey the message that humanity is in trouble if we don't defeat him.
In that sense, I think I was able to stimulate a sense of crisis.
Interviewer: Yes, yes! In that sense, the sense of crisis was bad, wasn't it? We were going to lose! Looking back, the enemy characters at that time were all characters who came out to be beaten.
Yonetani: That was customary at the time. I couldn't draw something solid enough to replace the main character, partly because elaborate designs were hard to move around.
>>
Part 8: Interviewer: I see! What is director Yonetani's favorite character among these characters and why?
Yonetani: I am often asked this question, but I put so much thought into all the characters that I am always at a loss if I am asked to choose just one (laughs). (laugh) So I can't choose one. They are all like children. It is just like not being able to choose which child is the cutest.
Interviewer: Is there a character that is closest to you?
Yonetani: I wonder if he's there? (smile)
Interviewer: (laugh)
Yonetani: I think it's because I'm looking at it from a bird's-eye view.
Interviewer: It's truly a god!
Yonetani: More like a Z-master than a god? (LOL)
Interviewer: (Laughing hysterically)
Yonetani: Not to sound like a doom-and-gloom aesthete, but in my case, I always want to take care of new blood. So when a director who surpasses me comes along, I feel like, "I don't have to do it anymore, and also, please take care of me! And recently, I have been feeling that way even more than usual.
For a long time, I have been doing it because no one else was doing it, and if someone else would do it, I would leave it to them. I would like to leave it to someone else to do it.

Part 9: Interviewer: GaoGaiGar" has become a very long series, hasn't it?
Was it initially planned to be only for TV?
Yonetani: When it started, yes.
Interviewer: Wasn't there originally foreshadowing of GaoGaiGar FINAL" included on TV?
Yonetani: It wasn't there at first, at the time of composition. The series composition is credited to Mr. Fuyushi Gobu, but actually I drew everything first (laughs). Mr. Gobu was very willing to accept my proposal and was very helpful.
So, the first draft was set up with Ikumi Kido as the last boss, but it was changed in the middle of the draft and became what it is today. I think it was toward the end of the game that the idea of a "FINAL" came up.

Wait what?

What-
Wait what happened for GGG->FINAL?
And I know there's like, two versions of FINAL, but I don't remember which version I watched.

Part 10: Interviewer: Which time of year is it?
Yonetani: When we were making the OVA "The Boy with the Crystal Eyes" for "Dagwon," we were asked if we could make an OVA for "GaoGaiGar," and we decided to make eight episodes. We were asked to make eight OVAs as a project, and we made up the "FINAL" series.
Since it was not to be broadcast on TV, I took the liberty of composing it in a longer format, but later I was asked to make it closer to the TV format, so it didn't fit at all (laughs). (Laughs.) The part of the work that got lost in the TV program led to the current Hakaioh. (Laughs.) The part that got left out has led to the current "Hakaioh
I think it's already aging, so I'd like to say that, in fact, the plan in Hakaioh was to have all the braves starting with Exkaiser appear as the culmination of the brave series. Nowadays, Rider and Ultraman also have characters from other series in their TV broadcasts.
There were no festive works like that at the time, and this was going to be the gold standard for that line of work! I wanted to compose a film in which all the past Yuusha series would appear, and I wanted to ask the director of each film to storyboard the story. I submitted a proposal, but since there was no such genre at the time, the project was not accepted and was rejected. It was a real waste of time (laughs).
>>
Part 11: Interviewer: (Laughs) I'd definitely like to see that!
Yonetani: You want to see it, don't you? You definitely want to see it, don't you? (Laughs)
Interviewer: It would have been so hot to have that! Even so, "GaoGaiGar" was very popular at that time, wasn't it? A game was also released.
Yonetani: The game was also created as an authentic history within the world.
Interviewer: The story of the game was also neat.
Yonetani: I was very determined to check all of the extremely thick documents of dialogues and flowcharts. I supervised them so that they would make sense with the main storyline. It was a lot of work (laughs).
Interviewer: A work in which all media are gathered together to form a single work or world resonates with otaku, and makes me think, "I have to see all the works! I feel like, "I have to see all the works!
Yonetani: The more you know about it, the more you chew, the more flavorful it is. Of course, you don't need to know anything about it to enjoy it. Because of this, everything is so deep, even down to the side characters, that it's hard to single out a favorite character (laughs).
Interviewer: Here, you brought me back to the question, and it's great! (Laughter)
Yonetani: Alouette, who was on the edge, is now entering the center in the novels and manga currently being serialized (laughs). And to have her voice voiced by Rie Kugimiya in the newly recorded drama CD, she's not just in the center, she's the star of the show!
>>
>>20848146
>Since it was not to be broadcast on TV, I took the liberty of composing it in a longer format
And people just ordered VHSes back then? I don't know how they worked in Japan, I only remember video stores in Canada..
>later I was asked to make it closer to the TV format, so it didn't fit at all (laughs)
Oop...
>The part of the work that got lost in the TV program led to the current Hakaioh. (Laughs.)
Ehh?? So if they just let him do whatever he wanted, we would have gotten a FINAL where all the Worseman references mattered, and a Hakaioh like, 40 years earlier than now?
>I'd like to say that, in fact, the plan in Hakaioh was to have all the braves starting with Exkaiser appear as the culmination of the brave series
Need NEED why didn't this happen...
>tfw unsure if anon's working hard translating (how? it's more polished than an internet translation) or just waiting for me, from the timing of the posts..
>>
Part 12: Interviewer: Thank you (laughs). This year's "Sunrise Yatate Bunko Grand Prix" is a groundbreaking contest that calls for 1.5 works of "GaoGaiGar," so please tell us what kind of works you would be happy to see submitted.
Yonetani: 1.5 It's difficult to create the next one, isn't it? If it's a derivative work, it may still be easy, but if it's a derivative work, I think it means cutting out a part from the main story and adding a different interpretation, so it's a creation that is not the same.
Interviewer: Yes, somewhere in the story and somewhere in between.
Yonetani: I hope everyone will enjoy submitting their work freely (laughs).
It doesn't matter if it destroys the view of the work, it's okay to use another, or if it breaks through the center of the main story as a legitimate history, I would be happy if both the artist and the reader can enjoy it.
Interviewer: Finally, do you have a message for the readers of the article?
Yonetani: Entertainment is justice! I support all of you. we are looking for someone to continue for me
Interviewer (Big laugh)
Yonetani: I supervised the novel, the manga, the drama CD, the songs, the settings... I don't have the energy, time, or courage to do all of this. And also the budget (laughs). I feel like I'm begging someone to do it for me (laughs).
>>
Part 13: Interviewer: Do you do the same amount of work for drama CDs as you do for regular anime?
Yonetani: That's right. Animation is more difficult because of the pictures, but we did not cut any corners at all in the music selection and sound effects.
Interviewer: I could understand why "GaoGaiGar" is still loved today. The amount of enthusiasm for the series is different.
Yonetani: I guess I'm a cook who can't serve cold food to my customers. You want the recipient of your heat to be happy. If you receive the twist in a normal way, it would be like, "tch~!" (laugh). I think it is a way of communicating as if I am delivering a dish with a baking stone inside, and I work in such a dimension (laugh).
Interviewer: (laugh)
Yonetani: You don't have to be so hot, but you're an idiot! (laughs)
Interviewer: Thank you so much for your time today!
Interview done.

>Super AI becomes commonplace technology in that show, and yet you don't see it anywhere else in any other show
Maybe it just never came up-
>piloted police robot things, various somewhat-smart appliances iirc, even civilian/working piloted mechs
Maybe the other shows are just set in rural/poorer neighbourhoods? But Might Gaine is set in pretty much bustling (Nouvelle) Tokyo (wait was Nouvelle Tokyo City separate from regular Tokyo, think there was an explanation). But oh, maybe it would work if you rearranged the show as well? So J-Decker or GGG is set pretty later.
>the cast of either show probably would have tried to help for the bigger incidents in the other
Well what if J-D was set during FINAL? Or taking place decades after, but that's not very fun. I don't know, I feel I'm starting to stretch things a bit.

There's a Japanese artist/writer in Takara that connected the JP Transformers canon very nicely, think he suggested some Brave-esque TF toyline to Takara way back- yeah.

Yeah, I haven't really even noticed when the show gradually transitioned, or when I started enjoying the show. I'm immensely (too?) fond of the cast and show and it's no longer a misanthropic chore. I'm excited. Maybe I'll finish Dagwon by the end of this month! Well, it's not even just that, it's like a lot of these shows couldn't even work if they were in the same setting. All the alien invasions in Da Garn for example don't really make any sense if humanity itself possesses battleships capable of destroying entire planets like we see in Goldran. For that matter you'd expect there to be a lot more focus on THE POWER if anything took place alongside GGG
It all can work if you tweak some details, but as they are? Well I can see Exkaiser, Fighbird, Dagwon and maybe Might Gaine all taking place in a shared setting but the others are more difficult

>All the alien invasions in Da Garn for example don't really make any sense if humanity itself possesses battleships capable of destroying entire planets like we see in Goldran.
Well, the king is a bad guy though, maybe evil rulers or corporations wouldn't really help if it weren't to their benefit, either that or "the larger events of Da Garn took place during the time where the king(?) was chasing the Goldran team across space"? I think you can arrange things timeline-wise so it would all FIT, I just don't know if it would be GOOD.
>For that matter you'd expect there to be a lot more focus on THE POWER if anything took place alongside GGG
SRW treated it as a secret/don't-fuck-with-it kind of power, and that's only moreso in the later part. Don't want to retcon anything...

The minipla version is a little more anime accurate. Less made up details. And like I said, there's gonna be more stuff with it. It'll probably even be cheaper if you're gonna make the preorder date. I've bought some minipla kits on mandarake, none of the GGG ones, but they've all been pretty solid, none of the runners were broken even taking economy shipping. Hell, I even bought like a 15 year old SoC Gunbuster and it was in perfect condition even though the poseable fingers break very easily (and I did end up breaking one later)
mandarake is like a legitimate hobby store too, it's not like you're buying off scammers on ebay. They sell secondhand stuff, but only if the actual contents are in good condition and at worst there's "package damage"

I'm familiar with mandarake insofar as it's a 4chan-beloved toy store with good prices, but I've still yet to actually purchase anything from it.
>at worst there's "package damage"
Yeah, I did hear about beloved Japanese autism, of "package and product is probably in irreparable ruin, 80% off" and there's like a billimeter-wide scratch on the box with no damage to the product.

>Volfogg's car thing is an entire backpack albeit it transforms and seems to pose fine

>>20850367

>>20850469
Well if you're gonna buy the SRC, not only does it not transform, but it also has diecast, which means it's gonna be heavy, which means it's gonna cost more to ship. I've also had problems with paint chipping on diecast figures too that my pure plastic figures have not had
Anyway, I've had the minpla Lian and Gunkid wishlisted for a very long time (there's always other things I'd prefer to buy first) and what I can tell you about that is that approximately every six weeks or so I get a notification that one of mandarake's store fronts got it in stock again. That set is quite a bit newer than most of the GGG kits though

Watching Dagwon especially, I'm not sure whether to give Jaebari a pat on the head and pinch on the cheek, or to go between the two languages and proofread the English.
Actually wait, are there easy-to-get files for Might Gaine, video and Korean+English subs, I was hoping to do this and torrented the show just before my computer wiped. I could probably do it.. the Kr subs are probably more accurate than the HK ones at least, and the existing Eng ones would be a good guideline if some terms are so completely confusing.

>was comparing versions of Dagwon and Goldran openings to each other, look at a rando recommended episode
>Shalala + Witch Salesman ep
>go find the 2-parter for the Final Battle against Walter
>start to feel inconsolable, legitimately start tearing up
Leon's little moment with Walter was good, I know Upgrade Bots don't really get that much characterization, but this was a really nice moment. I wish I could experience Goldran for the first time again. Despite the light-hearted episodic "haha wacky global Scooby-Doo adventures", it was a good setup for the rest of the story, and I think story-wise it might be the strongest Brave show for me. J-Decker's main plot was eh, and GGG Final's cliffhanger ending really couldn't warrant the title of "best/favourite Brave show". Maybe if/when I finish Hakaioh I'd change my mind, but it's not really fair to compare Goldran to a 3-parter decades in the making.
>people don't really talk about Hakaioh's ending here
Hopefully it's because the manga didn't cover the end yet and anons are careful about spoilers, rather than the novel ending sucking.

>I think Brave stuff is really really underrated.
Honestly it isn't, really. These threads being empty is a result of there being not much to discuss since most other people on the board have seen all the shows. And on top of that, none of these shows are deep or ambiguous enough to sustain big conversations or debates, and Brave shows are hardly the only popular shows like this

My favorite "real robot" anime is Xabungle, and it's pretty much the same way. I have literally never seen anyone on this board say anything bad about Xabungle. And it is a very well known show; it was directed by Tomino, and its been subbed for a very long time. Yet you only see threads about it every once in a while. There isn't one up right now, that's for sure. It's just a silly, fun feelgood show with a straightforward plot, not much to say about it.

Look pal, I remember you mentioning this about Tomino before and it seems like you got the wrong idea here. Tomino did make some shows which did have a very high body count, but only a few of them, and I'll list them all right here:
Zambot 3
Ideon
Dunbine
Zeta Gundam
Victory Gundam

That's it. Everything else he worked on, while not always lighthearted, has had a lot more restraint in how miserable things get. And the most recent of these, Victory Gundam, was like 30 years ago too. I think he left his murderous tendencies behind him

>why is it your favourite?
Upon reflection, I'm not really sure that it is my favorite, there's a lot of good ones, but it's at least top 3. Anyway, I really like it because I think it's pretty damn good at comedy, very solid mecha designs (I own one of the Minipla, very good deal), it's very consistent, doesn't really have any low points, and even though the characters are all kinda angry, selfish people who constantly bicker with each other (for comedic effect of course), I still came to like them. They are really passionate about what they're trying to accomplish. Pretty unusual show to, it has almost nothing to do with any military and is more about this drifter guy who's acting as the bodyguard of a travelling merchant group while on yet another quest for vengeance for his parents that inevitably spirals into something greater
Outstanding OP too, Akira Kushida is probably my favorite anison vocalist
https://youtu.be/tpoIiK8gk8c

Also the show's commitment to realism is obviously fake, the robots are controlled by steering wheels for crying out loud. That alone gets me to laugh

>Everything else he worked on, while not always lighthearted, has had a lot more restraint in how miserable things get.

>Was he doing better or did- did people sort of know what to expect and tried to restrain or cheer him?
I think he just got tired of it seeing as most of those shows came out in a brief window of time. He was making comedic stuff both before and after that window. I get the impression that he gets more and more creative control later on in his career; a common criticism of later Tomino works is that they're too fast paced and have dense, confusing dialogue. But somehow none of these later shows really ended up being tragic aside from maybe Wings of Rean (which still had a relatively low death toll by Dunbine standards regardless)

>Show show!
don't really have a good pic with it in focus, but it's in the background behind my HG Gosaurer here. Fully transformable, comes with the two little mini walkers and the hovercraft, all the full armor parts, and it only cost me like $30. Only thing it's missing is the pair of skis it used during that 10-15 episode arc that took place in a tundra area (they did come with the SoC), but I can go without that. There's a new Moderoid Xabungle that went up the other day, looks a lot nicer, but doesn't come with the mini machines, costs more and it's not the first model kit I ever built like this thing is, so I'm holding firm

I know Ideon has something like, the deaths of two worlds/universes and the protags, so I'm a bit worried as to how bad Dunbine is...
Don't get me wrong, I like Tomino, I just hope he's doing ok.

>>
>>20859246

Ganbaruger is a show where our protagonist is a modern day elementary school kid, and yet he trains under his father to become a ninja. Said father gets turned into a talking dog in the first episode because of the villains' curse, and a similar curse gets placed on our heroes such that they will also turn into dogs if anyone discovers their identity as robot pilots
It's that kinda show

It also has a loveable failure kind of villain that eventually becomes a good guy, but all the Eldrans have that

Well, it's very rare for even a Brave show to go into detail explaining why you couldn't trust even like, the most trustworthy and occasionally useful human ally and probably minimize the chance of either of you being endangered. Nice!

I thought of like, having the sticker on some paper or other slightly-harder material that I could freely attach/remove from eye pieces or just insert gently for SD, but it never got anywhere.

They're sort of the laughing stock of the "high end Japanese collectible market" to the point where people (jokingly) assume that it's all just a really elaborate money laundering scheme due to the exorbitant prices they demand for their low quality products.

I have their Nyagoking and it feels like some amateur's first attempt at a garage kit.
Overspray, paint bleeding, dirt specs under the paint, parts like the inside of the head not painted at all so you look at the bare primer, parts like the crest not being glued on, parts being incorrectly assembled, the magnet joints not holding shit and lousy, barebones engineering in general.
Even at like 60 bucks I felt ripped off and they initially wanted almost 200 for that thing!

What? What sort of fucking nightmare happens at Sargasso that it takes 6-7 episodes?
>hoping a good portion of 7 is a non-rushed climax, bc Brave show endings usually felt rushed
Goldran felt like the exception, so once again making it the best show in my heart.
>>
>>20859700
Nope, I'd say pretty much everything left contributes to the ending, and honestly a lot of what you've already seen does too
Also I wouldn't call Da Garn's ending rushed either, to the point where I wish it was a little more rushed. Aside from all the Braves dying at the last second, I was expecting it all to happen exactly like it did and it was honestly pretty boring. It could have used an endgame surprise. Not that Dagwon is the same way; its ending is way more intense than Da Garn's even if I think both have good buildup

Not quite as dramatic as "two sentients back to back" but it was still fascinating and immensely detailed. Makes sense that Scoop Dagwon is still in the opening, considering Fire Scoop can't really be handled for an excessive period of time.

>I guess J-Decker sort of did this
I wouldn't really say that it did apart from the Hyjuss stuff which didn't really end up mattering anyway. Not sure why it was even in the show other than to explain Shadowmaru's gun mode (which, you know, come on, that's totally something Saejima would have put in anyway). I mean I guess it plays into the thematics and all but it wasn't needed. GGG is more how you do a surprise ending. It was stupid and came out of nowhere, sure, but it led to an absolutely incredible final battle. Dagwon's ending is quite similar to it, really, with better buildup, even bigger stakes, and it gave that emotional sendoff plenty of time. It's my second favorite Brave ending and the only reason it isn't my first is because Lian and Gunkid aren't in it
>>
>>20860513
>apart from the Hyjuss stuff which didn't really end up mattering anyway
I mean, it was a bit surprising to worry whether Deckard would remain but hm, yeah I wasn't too sure why they were there either. The show likes delving into "are heart AIs people" themes, so maybe "something something free will" or whatever the dilemma was, was another thing they tried to tackle?
>which, you know, come on, that's totally something Saejima would have put in anyway
Heh, I suppose they could have introduced that as a separate upgrade for the big bad!
>cautiously excited for noodles I really like
Coming home and recruiting Kagero after a good day would be grand, assuming the day works out at all.

Ah, GGG proper? The ending with my nemesis? I mean, it was tremendously concerning, just after everything seemed to work out, yeah..

Awwwwh. Didn't really consider GGG's ending in a bit, considering my view of FINAL's ending. Although I like GaoGaiGar and FINAL, the ending is.. if you told me that after that ending, Brave was cancelled forever, I would probably end up showing up on the news.

“WOHHHHHH, DAMN IT ALLLLLL!”
–Kakuseijin V2 in Active Mode bent its whole body around and pitched an object bigger than itself. It flew out like a boomerang and intercepted the orange cannonball in midair! The two objects ricocheted in opposite directions.
Kakuseijin V2 had thrown the J-Quath that King J-Der had entrusted it with. The J-Quath, whirling through the air like a boomerang, lost speed and stabbed into the frozen ground right in front of GaoFighGar.
“R-Renais-san! Mr. Sol-J said to use that!” Keita yelled emphatically, sticking the V2’s arm up. Its dinosaur claws formed a crude V sign.
GaoFighGar had gotten up beside it and was being targeted by Ruin BrokenGao and Ruin ProtectGao. The marine creature-like Ruin Apostles swam through the frozen atmosphere as if it were liquid and were at this very moment about to ram the enemy. Embodying Renais’ fighting spirit, GaoFighGar made no attempt to dodge.
It swung up the enormous, pointy weapon it was gripping with both hands and held it out forward. “WHOOOOOOA!”
The shark and dolphin’s charge was blocked by a silver anchor — the J-Quath. It looked as if the sharp blade was going to fillet the two as they came flying at it, but nothing of the sort happened. Ruin ProtectGao had deployed a barrier at its beak. The immaterial buffer protected the sea creatures from the impact. The next moment, Ruin BrokenGao corkscrewed with its whole body. Making a tailspin charge at point-blank range, it sent the J-Quath flying!

>>
>>20864009
It was. Apparantly they had spare Gao Machines for it and used the prototype Phantom Gao as the core.
>>
>>20862376
I think it's also that they used Power Dagwon as the main one once it was introduced and Power Dagwon turning into Super Fire would look weird based on how the combination works of Power breaking up and Fire wearing it as additional parts. When Great Fighbird would be formed from Granbird he'd always jump over to Fire Jet before the combo started because it would look weird to start with Granbird when it's not the core of the unit.

When Bandai basically owns Sunrise, it also owns the Brave Series. I'm really tempted about the minipla for Volfogg and Mic, but the gigantic car piece is a bit sort of grating, albeit maybe I was spoiled by Transformers. If there was a soupminipla of Shad, I'd take it regardless of rando parts coming or going. I also feel legitimate emotional comfort having Kagero in my roster now..

I'm glad you loved GaoGaiGar+FINAL, albeit the ending was sentimentally worrying. But I'm really really happy you enjoyed it! What's next on your Brave adventure?
>actually J-Decker is the best series because it has the most characterized robots (Deckard and SomeoneElse are my faves)
>actually Da Garn is the best series because every episode is plot-centric and you'll like the goof cop and This One Other Character (I did)
>actually hey watch Goldran because uhhh dude trust me (it ended up becoming my favourite Brave series, even with Deckard being my fave bot, l-literally "dude trust me"!)
>actually hey watch Dagwon although it's moreso Sentai, few sentient bots sorry (ended up absolutely loving the sentients and slightly infatuated with one or two of the MCs)
Not much headway on Exkaiser and Might Gaine but those were neat so far as well. I outlined my "recommended + experience/result" sorta thing but like- I can't really say hat would be the best order for optimal enjoyment. I'm paritial to Goldran and J-Decker but aa

I don't think you were, that kind of thing isn't common with transforming robot toys of any line
But nonetheless, I do understand it. If an transforming toy has to make a sacrifice between the aesthetic, the functionality, or the transformation, I'd rather it be the transformation. It's way more important that it looks good and has solid joints and posability. The transformation isn't something you spend near as much time with

Right now, I'm not sure. I don't think my friend wants to watch another super robot show right away, so we might watch an old real robot first like maybe VOTOMS. Either way I am unfortunately gonna be putting any future anime watching off for a few weeks until I've finished the LSAT.

Hmm, I like converting them back and forth, so I'll leave it alone if it's infuriating... but at the same time I still endure it if I like the other modes, so maybe amazing articulation and aesthetics make up for it.

It seriously depends on the test weirdly enough. Sometimes I can go -2/3 on all of them but sometimes RC kills me and sometimes LG does. I just need a 164 with my GPA to get into the schools I'm looking at but I'm still super stressed regardless. But it's only 2.5 more weeks until the test so not much longer to be stressed at least. I have been trying to relax but whenever I do I just get stressed about not studying sadly

I was getting around those avgs for practice tests, but ended up with a 167, if you're averaging well, I'd go into it somewhat confident on the day of. Ofc breaking the 170 barrier is a dream come true, but still. Maybe it's a bit late to say, but people say that for LGs it really depends on what system you use for charting it, some swear up and down by Kaplan vs Princeton being better than the other one, but it's been a while.
>I have been trying to relax but whenever I do I just get stressed about not studying sadly
Hey, hey. I get that, but please do know that "I've maximized study time, minimizing sleep and meals and every remaining waking moment is for study" is literally less helpful than being a bit relaxed. People recommend that for the last few mins/hours before test to just relax. Albeit it's been a few years, but I'd even go as far as to argue that something for the LSAT where you'd want to be fast but also intuitive, being a bit relaxed is key. I'd say to stick to a consistent schedule of study. Hoping the best for the next 2.5 weeks. I'll be rooting for you always.

Thanks for the words of advice. So far I've been averaging a 168, and hopefully I can stick to that for the real thing. I'm definitely going to try and relax more, just take the dogs for walks and work out and stuff. More productive than playing video games but still something to do, right?

I'd recommend SRW30 in that I can't handle more than 1-2 stages per day, and that amounts to like 1-2 hours, but having that as an intro/summary of J-Decker instead of the show would rob you of the emotional content. But you also get post-GaoGaiGar-FINAL story stuff for Hakaioh.

Don't worry, I didn't want to make assumptions but I know plenty of lawyers with all sorts of neat interests and plenty of things they do outside of work, so I wouldn't be discouraged at all.

SRW 30 might be a good one for me to check out, especially now that I know GGG since I've heard it's a huge player in a lot of the writing. I have also watched a decent amount of the other series so that could work

I meant moreso being sad and unproductive, but I dunno how long you were lurking here.

>SRW 30 might be a good one for me to check out, especially now that I know GGG since I've heard it's a huge player in a lot of the writing
It's my first SRW game and so others could probably inform you better, but at least for 30 it incorporates the prior and ongoing plot of most of the stuff it introduces. So Koji and Amuro and Ryoma and Guy all knew each other because they fought together against the Zonders and Invaders and etc. The Code Geass backstory was a bit daunting, but 30 was enjoyable and got me to watch quite a few shows. I'd definitely recommend Gridman/Dynazenon, Gun X Sword, and Rayearth.
>I have also watched a decent amount of the other series so that could work
What, J-Decker? Already??

>>20877385
Unfortunately this. As well as an improved Kakuseijin from Betterman.
Apparently SRW W goes through the entire GaoGaiGar plot and has all bots playable, small and large(?!), so that's an option for when you start to forget about GaoGaiGar and want to revisit them.

Aaaaa... But yeah at least uhhhh...
the webm you were shown takes a few episodes to happen iirc, then there's an unspecified number of bots you have to meet, then uh- I'm really not the best person to try remembering the pacing of episodes, or anticipating how long it would take you to get through this game. But yeah, J-Decker has emotional moments as well as just "spendin time with chars in an episodic way, where you get to know and love their personality more and more".
>already watched those
Gonna hug you...
>Rayearth is on my list for sure - it and Escaflowne both look like really enjoyable isekai mecha shows

>>20877525
Not really since GGG was in the game before 30 and they were all there (well, Big Volfogg, ChoRyuJin and GekiRyujin anyway)
I presume they were removed so they didn't have to make Mic into a unit or make Tenryujin or any of the later bots since it would be inconsistent to have some side characters and not others
