>ITT: Things that you rarely, if ever, see in mecha that you wish happened more often.

I'll start with my big pet peeve: I wish that you saw more often the fact that a humanoid mecha can take more damage than a human and keep on working. Specifically, I wish there were more scenes of headless mecha, because as long as the pilot isn't stored in the head, there should be no reason it can't continue one even if the head is shot off.

If all your cameras are in the head it'd be hard to pilot.

The magnaguard droids from Star Wars have that giant eye in their chest so they can keep functioning even if the heads are cut off.

Doesn't really work when you're telling a story visually. Yes they're robots, but they're psychologically just giant metal people. It's why they often "bleed" transmission fluid, or a non-explosive failure is conveyed by having the lights go out in their "eyes". You show something walk around with its head blown off, that better be the only thing going on, otherwise the audience is gonna be too hung up on that to pay attention to what else is happening.
>>
>>20514544
Unless you're writing for literal retards, I think most people are going to realize what's going on.
>>
>>20513860
Expanding on that, I want to see the mecha cleanup crew. Groups of infantry and engineers scrambling over downed enemy suits for intact hardware and POWs. So many times you see mook suits get hit in the head or arm and then pass out of the scene as if there isn't a pilot and most of a mobile suit still there.

Retain visible damage.
I dunno what "maintenance" and "repairs" mean in real life, but no way in hell after each battle mechs would look brand new. Sure you can reattach limbs and replace completely wasted parts of armor, but shit like minor damage on parts that weren't replaced should still remain.

You'd think when most studios switched to CGI, it would become a thing, but no.

That totally depends on the level of effort they're willing to put in, I guess. I do enjoy detailing like that, even the 3D models from stuff as old as 2000-era games like Federation VS Zeon had neat touches like scorch marks next to thruster nozzles and slightly shaded armor to show that they're not pristine and clean, but have seen use and wear and tear, but nowadays everything seems to need to look like they came out of a car wash on the deluxe cycle.

Many military vehicles have a "battle switch" to get you going in case things get kinetic. That's why if you're in garrison some of those vehicles need the batteries removed so no jackwagon gets an NJP from a joy ride
>>
>>20520607
Former 19K here, there's no key to start the Abrams, just a switch to turn the batteries on and get the turbine spinning.

Depends how the internals work. Plus even if all the cameras aren't in that spot it's a complex machine so having a major part blown off is going to cause problems with it working even if the cockpit is unarmed and there's still ways of it moving. If you stab a giant piece of metal through your cars engine it's probably going to have problems running, even if the interior driver's area is unharmed and it still has 4 wheels.

It's not like the head is totally unimportant besides cameras. There's probably some important components there.
>>
>>20520607
No. Most military vehicles just start and go because they may need to get the things moving in a hurry and usually base security is trusted to keep anyone from stealing them rather than have key's someone might lose when they need them.

If anything it's the opposite, CGI makes it much harder to affect changes than just being able to draw what you want to show, since the model needs to be edited. The entire point of CGI is to save money having one model that doesn't need to change.

Because it has to sell gunpla too
If you played Lost War Chronicles on the PS2 which was never ported outside of Japan, some of the loading screens are basically trying to sell you gunpla

Patlabor prominently features shotguns. Just straight scaled up pump-action shotguns. And also scaled up revolvers. One of the many touches they put on it to make the mechanics of the world seem more believable by having the police equipped with more mechanically simple weapons that seem more possible. It extends to the military too as they have no giant magazine fed machine guns, but plenty of contemporary rotary cannons.

I've always wondered how some of the just scaled up magazine-fed machine guns work in shit like Gundam. It seems like there'd be a lot of difficulties just making an M16 or some shit bigger but they just expect the audience to roll with it. And I do even though it's silly because it's cool.

More mech designs that are canonically considered to be mediocre or crap in-universe. Protagonist super-mechs are nice but sometimes you want to laugh at the giant robot equivalent of a Reliant Robin or Morris Marina.

Patlabor doesn't have revolvers for realism, the fuck is wrong with you? They're just giant police guns.

That is a pretty cool one.
As for me, I'd like to see legs involved more in direct-combat actions. That said, I can think of many reasons why it doesn't happen often, even when a suit is built with it in mind.

I second this I think an aquatic based mecha series could be really unique.
>>
Mecha of various size classes. Powered suits, small mechs, medium mechs, then occasionally the gigantic super mechs...maybe with multiple pilots. All with specific uses and purposes, and given all-round agency in the series.

It's not like this hasn't been done a bit yeah, but not as much as I'd like or with as much emphasis given to it. Most mecha series have the mecha sort of assume a uniform size and that's always seemed to be such a design limitation to the full possibility of the concept.
