Probably the period piece one, Wasai King Kong was just a salaryman comedy iirc
>>
>>20088305
If you really want to be literal in the realm of tokusatsu, that would be “a page of madness” from 1925, a surrealist horror film with VERY minor special effects but was the first of its kind in the country. Thought to have been lost like what happened to the 1938 Kong in edo film, a film master was discovered by the director in his office in 1971. Fun fact: eiji tsuburaya was an assistant cameraman for this movie

Too bad the 2nd season de-emphasized the power armor and had Zach develop psychic powers so that he could fight out-of-suit.

The best episode was Zach battling his brain-washed brother who had the more advanced version of the armor.

Funny how most non-adapted OEL toku tend to be very poorly preserved.

Also are there any more we should know about?
Doesn’t have to be American necessarily, just in English, Gerry Anderson shows count in the Japanese sense of the word, but I’m thinking shows that, coincidentally or otherwise, resemble Japanese superhero toku.

Unless there’s an English-language kaiju show I don’t know about.

I could easily see little kids being legitimately frightened by Doruge and his monsters,
guess they must've carried over some of those horror elements from Kamen Rider's earliest episodes.
>>
Any of you keeping up with the Local Hero scene? Phoenix Yatsurugi starts up its 10th season in a month and the entire thing is still geolocked on Nico.
>>
>>20095313
It easily was a factor in the show getting only 35 episodes than a full 51 or something series though this didn’t stop it from becoming one of toei’s Most famous tokusatsu works from the period (besides kamen rider and goranger of course)
>>
>>20095319
It probably made sense back when they started because no one but certain japanese fans gave a single fuck about local heroes, but nowadays imo they should get rid of the geolock. It literally offers no benefit and they are local heroes, it's not like they have complicated distribution rights to sort out.

In any case, I personally prefer the feeling of stage shows to tv shows.
>>
>>20094088
Oh neat, seems it's getting less views but that makes sense with being a a metal heroes parody(?) and it probably get less news, still these remind of the old VHS Tokus, a lot of which were also co-produced by a porn company and starred adult film actresses and actors, you can tell there is a lot of passion behind the scenes and sometimes for the stars too.

God I wish the other Armor Hero shows got subbed, Lava episode 1 has such a strong opener to it. The show itself feels like the best of Faiz & W thrown into a blender. Also it's when the fight chorography stopped being all slow n muddy like the first 2 shows.

>>
>>20098350
Between this and Goggle Red in the background of a Facts Of Life episode I have to believe there was a secret toku fan in Hollywood at the time
>>
>>20100133
Back in the day regional channels in the San Francisco area showed Japanese-language programming, sometimes subbed,
which must've led to enough of an underground toku following there for this 1984 fan film to be a thing, starring Nigo, V3, & Super-1.

WTF happend to Girl Gun Lady on youtube?
Did Bandai just delete it all and that's it?
DAE has links to subbed version?
>>
Man I don't fucking know what I'm gonna do once I'm done with Barom-1.
I mean, I could just get back to Akumaizer & subsequently Bibyun,

BUT ALSO,

there are those Nana-iro Kamen movies that have scripts to sub off of,
so that would be neat, it'd definitely be nice to have more B&W era toku subbed,

On top of that, many people don't know that National Kid is TECHNICALLY fully subbed,
thanks to Brazilian compilation movies of its first 3 arcs (2 movies per arc) & its 4th arc being subbed in full,
BUT GOD DIGGITY DAMN ARE THOSE SUBS ROUGH, so I could probably scrub them AND fill in whatever blanks the comp movies missed!

AND ON TOP OF THAT, Fuun Lion-Maru, unlike the original, had a COMPLETE Brazilian-Portuguese dub, & therefore a reliable source to translate from,
& even though I never finished the original, it's probably OK since to my understanding Fuun Lion-Maru is largely a standalone sequel.

Oh and like I said the other day, un-fucking Red Baron & Iron King's timing would be nice too.

Thanks for sharing. I think I'm nearly out with the Giga stuff. Whilst the action is okay, I just don't think they're particularly competent at the out-of-battle stuff and, at the risk of sounding wishy-washy, I feel like it lacks the 'heart' that I enjoy in tokusatsu, coming across a bit sterile and empty.

13 episodes of Operation Mystery,
specifically 1, 4, 8, 11, 12, 15, 17-20, 22, 25, & 26,
were broadcast dubbed in Germany in the early 70's.

Only these 13 were dubbed because parents complained about the show being too scary.
But in 2013, a DVD was released along with a separate volume subbing the remaining episode (except the controversial episode 24)

So, HYPOTHETICALLY, if these were ripped, & if someone who knew German could get their hands on them,
then we might have a decent basis from which to sub Operation Mystery!

>>
>>20134480
Going by the German Amazon listing for the first volume, it seems that it contains only the dub and no German subtitles to make working from it easier. It's still possible to translate from this, but they'd have to have a really good ear.

It also means the German DVDs aren't suitable for raws as half the episodes don't have Japanese audio.

Episode 24 would require raws sourced from old VHS and laser disc releases from before Tsuburaya got a bug up their ass about the episode.
>>
>>20135621
Apparently it has since been made available on home video last I checked.
But yeah unfortunately I can't for the life of me find complete raws for Operation Mystery.
>>
>>20134480
iirc that was basically how they restored the Forbidden Ultra Seven Episode, they got a recording off TNT and grafted the moon audio on to it
>>
>>20135671
AFAIK, the latest home video release was the blu-ray set a few years ago, and the episode is still missing from it. The value of the LDs with the episode on it would have also dropped if that were the case.

But yeah, nobody has ripped these and put them in the usual places as of yet. I thought of doing it but I just don't have the money right now.

It's....not very good sadly. But you do get an updated Waruder design.

Apparently there's also mangas out there that continue the story, which given the movie was planned to be followed up by a show makes me wonder how much plot they had before that fell apart.
>>
>>20140114
The movie doesn't leave any cliffhangers. The dictator was killed, his system fell apart, wrecked by Hakaider.

It was a standalone movie, that ironically gained a cult status.
>>
>>20140489
True, but we do know a tv show sequel was in the works. It falling apart in production is what led to the creation of Changerion after all.
>>
>>20140497
It was due to controversy back then, as " Tank Kikaider " received negative responses from Kikaider fans.

The fans did not want to see the heroic characters to be antagonized.
>>
So, a while back someone subbed the first episode of Operation Mystery based off of Chinese subs with Japanese subs underneath.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7d-gPyrh6c

Well, I found on BiliBili that that treatment was given to episodes 1-4, 12, 15, 16, 24, 25, & 26.

Combined with the German DVD's subs for episodes 5-7, 9, 10, 13, 14, 21, & 23,
& all together there are translatable subs for 1-7, 9, 10, 12-16, 21, & 23-26, or 17/26 episoes of Operation Mystery!

So hypothetically if one were to rip that German DVD, & also some decent raws for the whole show, we'd be golden!

Fyi, if you're looking for the German DVDs, I have both and could rip them.

Some info:
>dubbed episodes are censored, somewhat worn-out German TV masters from the 70s (no real remastering done, but pretty good audio IIRC).
>subbed episodes are the same as the original Tsuburaya DVDs, just converted to PAL.

One funny thing about the German dub is the intro narration explaining how things depicted in the show are fictional and the S.R.I. organization doesn't exist in real life (I doubt it looked THAT realistic even back then).
