Well, "Ghost in the Shell" and "Apple Seed" have a lot of insect-like mecha, a similar concept is present in "86", as well as many-legged robots are presented in "Patlabor" - this is not counting concepts and amateur works from other sources.

But how good is this concept of robotic technology compared to humanoid mechas? What are the pros and cons of it? How difficult would it be to drive such machines compared to bipedal ones? Will it be convenient to use them at work and in battle? Etc...

I propose to discuss steel beetles and spiders in the mecha world.
>>
I like when they have grapple hooks, spider mechs are the best non-humanoid mechs.

I like it when they have wheels or tracks on their legs for added mobility on even or"smooth"ground.
>>19747596 hooks are a great addition.its hard for me to picture them without a big gun.they could make sense as fully automated artillery in areas that you cannot easily reach with wheeled or tracked vehicles.

Off the top of my head, more legs = better stability, lower profile, lower ground pressure & more balanced weight distribution (unless the feet are pointy things for some reason), simpler walking cycles more conducive to being automated, loss of a limb not as detrimental. None of that controlled falling that's commonly known as walking & running.

On the other hand, more moving parts to maintain. Also, something something.

The Desert Gunners in Dougram are specifically meant to be used in deserts cause their multiple legs give them an advantage when it comes to maneuverability in that terrain compared to the other bipedal Mecha in the series.

Nonsensical when you have caterpillar tracks. Too much stress on too little material. Mechanical too complex.

>>
>>19747594
six legged designs are sound as far as safe gait development goes(see insect realm), but the four legged stuff is too unstable, gait-wise. Something that Boston Dynamics will trip over badly in the future.
>>
>>19750067
mechanical complexity aside, i'd think smallish 6+ legged tanks would have much better manuverability in varied/steep terrain and urban areas

how many wheels are we talking and what's their load per wheel?
if it's 4 tiny wheels sliding under some sort of "claws" then you can kiss your design goodbye because that shit wouldn't be able to last a second without the axis bar collapsing. Not mentioning each wheel requires their own engine and suspension system because the legs are so far apart so a 4WD is impossible.
>>
>>19750381
Your weapons should be towards the front of the mecha so the rear legs can absorb the kickback of firing cannons, guns or missiles.

I wouldn't hire someone as short-sighted as you.
Tank have plenty of limitation and weakpoint and pieces under a lot of stress. Caterpillar are used because this is cost efficient and there's no other choice for now.
If we had the controls software needed, the mechanical and material engineering wouldn't be the problem.

A subsidiary of John Deer developed this some years back. It didn't make it into mass production, because it isn't really an improvement over using a segmented vehicle with large, low pressure tires.

Once these things get significantly faster, will will probably start seeing them (at least in the forestry industry).

There is just something about their designs that irk me, idk, I tried understanding it, and giving them a chance, but something is just really off.
I never liked cars or trucks or stuff like that growing up, so maybe that's part of it, and I'm not a fan of transforming gimmicks, so all I'm left with is the robot form to like, which I don't.

I have always been a supporter of humanoid mechas and exoskeletons, but after getting acquainted with anime and light novel about the eighty-sixths, I became interested in the concept of insect-like robots.

However, I believe that too many legs will only interfere with control. How many stilts can be considered optimal? Do such mechas need a tank turret, or is it better to place weapons in the limbs?

That model in particular is handled by yorha-like androids, so it's okay.
I think XM2 has the most balanced design in the story, especially with piledrivers in its massive 4 legs. Shin is the only one who uses the blades anyway, so that secondary part of arms can be swapped to turrets.

Generally speaking a spider-tank style design makes a lot more sense than a bipedal mech. Lower profile, better weight distribution, simpler balance concerns, not having to reinvent the wheel completely on weapon or internal systems versus a conventional armoured vehicle, there's a ton of reasons. More mechanical complexity and potentially more weakpoints are issues but if you're talking about mecha you really don't give a shit about those to begin with anyway.

It's certainly powerful although some would argue for wheels+legs.

Legged excavators already exist irl as niche vehicles for engineering on extreme surfaces like dams and mountains
Fictionally, maybe they can be extended as artillery/AA platforms that can reach areas where conventional vehicles/mechs can't?

Reminds me of the mechs from Just Cause 3. How they're 4 legged with omnidirectional rollers as the feet.
Funny how a game as ridiculous as Just Cause, actually has the most realistic mech design I've ever seen from any piece of media ever.

low key, insects and other living animals are comprised of machine like system/parts more simple than human anatomy. it would make sense to steal some of natures already proven ideas.

I'm really happy with them. They're very detailed for 1/48 scale & highly articulated..

I wonder if S2 is going to be announced during the special episode
The very existence of XM2 is a huge spoiler about the fates of main characters for the anime onlies
