Gridman is such a weird show. The fights are pretty good but the whole slice of life part is... off somehow?

Also, Naoto is a little bitch.
>>
>>19741265
I think the show needed more stakes to contrast with the SoL comfy. Also Digifer needed to be more proactive since he's just rolling with Takashi's bullshit.

Is tis any good?
>>
>>19741287
It's a fine little SoL toku. Suit and set work are top notch and the small town stuff is charming.

Downside is that the main bad guy doesn't really do much until the end and that it's easy to tell certain aspects were cut rather late due to the episode count getting slashed. But all in all its worth a watch (it's floating around on YT so if you wanna test it before buying you can, bear in mind it's rips from the TOKU release so subs are ass).

On the one hand, more P-Pro stuff can't possibly be a bad thing.

But on the other hand, according to a friend of mine who once worked for him, this Ben Dunn guy is apparently an asshole of monolithic proportions.
>>
>>19741403
Ninja High School is probably the longest running continuous independent comic in America.
>>
>>19741359
I just flipped through a few Toku subbed episodes this week.

I can confirm the subs are terrible. Not pretentious "dry or stilted" kind of complaints either. Piss poor grammar and spelling and just unreadable a few times.
>>
>>19741616
>Ben Dunn guy is apparently an asshole of monolithic proportions.
There's plenty of workers stories about him floating around too
>>
>>19741265
Is it bad I love Naoto as a main protagonist?
>>
>>19741265
Naoto being an asshole most of the time made the show entertaining. I remember that one episode where he almost got his brother killed.
>>
>>19741287
I personally love the show. Some of the best set pieces, kaiju, and visuals Toku has to offer in terms of being eye catching and memorable. The human side is fun, and it works well as a fun balance to the intense Digital World fight scenes.

>Downside is that the main bad guy doesn't really do much until the end
Yeah, the final fight is fantastic, but before that Digifer doesn’t make much of an impression. Oddly enough Syber Squad actually made Kilokahn a lot more memorable compared to Digifer.
>>
>>19742169
Are there any DVD rips of Syber-Squad online?
Preferably streaming?
>>
>>19742169
>Oddly enough Syber Squad actually made Kilokahn a lot more memorable compared to Digifer
It helps so much that SSSS changed up the dynamic, having Kilo come up with plans and only going through with Malcolm being petty when he was more or less tricked into it.
>>19742181
There's episodes on YT, but in various levels of quality.
>>
>>19742361
There was also a lot of Malcolm coming up with a petty idea, but convinces Kilokahn of its use on a global scale.
Kilokahn always thought big. I always enjoyed the episode where he just said “Fuck it, I’ll just set off all the world’s nukes at once.” Even Malcolm was rooting for Servo.

Reminder on Takeshi's autism in each episode

1 He can't give Yuka his love letter
2 No reason given. He just comes home sperging out
3 He can't get on the payphone and Yuka bump into him but he can't give Yuke his love letter again
4 He hacks a smart car because the guy on TV claims the car is unhackable
5 He got run over by a grocery guy with a cart of orange boxes and people laughed at him
6 He spergs out at a music store for having music that interrupted his moping
7 He can't give Yuka his love letter again while Yuka is shopping for cake ingredients
8 He gets inspired by a comment about brothers
9 He fucks up a test and gets only 57th place
10 He makes a fool of himself at a water fountain and start hording bottled water
11 A kid run into him in a supermarket but the mom defends the kid from him, which makes Takeshi mad about money because his parents only ever gives him money
12 A thief broke into his house but was scared away by Digifer. The thief bumps into Takeshi on the way out of the house
13 The local gym trainer offers him gym membership
14 His alarm clock didn't work
15 He gets kicked out of the arcade for hogging a VR shooting game
16 Two cops harass him when he was going home at night
17 He gets mad because the protagonists befriends a hacker who turned out to be a crippled kid
18 He gets inspired by a mummy exhibition
19 His gravure magazine with his kaiju sketches got confiscated by the cops
20 His CG paint wasn't appreciated by some art critic
>>
>>19743579
21 He had a nightmare
22 He gets jealous of a dinosaur excavation
23 No reason again. He was already in the process of making a new monster to get revenge on Gridman
24 He bought flowers for Yuka but fucks up the part of giving the flowers to her
25 He gets mad about chimney smoke, almost got run over by a truck, whose driver spew some more emission smoke at him. He actually wins this one
26 Second part from the previous episode
27 A kid's tank toy hit him with some paint ball
28 He takes some creep shots of Yuka but found out she was not smiling for him, but for Naoto
29 A dog barked at him and made him run into a noodle delivery man
30 A love fortune telling machine make him act like a fool
31 He tries to kick the ball back to a bunch of kids and make a fool out of himself, and drops a floppy of Digifer's consciousness on the road
32 He steps on gum, gets beat up by the guy when he calls him out for littering (he actually "wins" for once and make the bully fucks off)
33 His good doppleganger shows up
34 He gets jumped on the way home by some deliquents
35 Gets mad because Yuka is nice to everyone but him. This episode was lewd as fuck
36 He can't break into the computer system of a new mall that's supposedly unhackable so he creates a kaiju to wreck it
37 He got busted for public urination by a jerk cop so Digifer and he create a monster that rewrote the Constitution and mind controlled all the cops
38 He created a monster that caused a trash pile up. Digifer finally has enough of his shit and abandon Takeshi
39 No more Takeshi autism. He finally fess up and man up
>>
>>19743579
>>19743580
Apparently he’s not the only one with autism.

Syber Squad has some pros, but honestly now that Gridman’s on the way I’d just wait for Gridman.

The only Syber Squad episodes really worth watching in light of Gridman’s release are the Skorn episodes and episodes 38 and 39. Their version of Shinobilar (Skorn) is god tier, and the “finale” episodes really let Tim Curry ham it up.
>>
>>19743579
>>19743580
Jesus he's a freaking r9k /b/tard /pol/tard mega combo. This show will be a treat.
>>
>>19743546
Folks have been trying to license Spectreman forever but the rights are a mess in the US, since (like Space Giants) the show just wound up in the hands of some rando who's off the grid.
>>
>>19743825
License the show, not the IP itself, hopefully that’s not the case for P-Pro’s other shows.
>>
>>19741379
>>19743825
>>19744101
Well, if this is the only way Spectreman can get any sort of official English release...I'll wait and see.

Personally though, I could see Discotek do it. Those guys are hella dedicated when they set their minds on a specific goal.
>>
>>19744177
P-Pro deserves it, I've never heard bad things about any of their shows!
(barring certain aspects of Space Giants but hey that was their first show)
>>
>>19743707
>and the “finale” episodes really let Tim Curry ham it up.
"NO, THERE WILL BE KILOKAHN LEFT"
Honestly the show is worth one watch for Curry as Kilo but otherwise it's just interesting to see a Toku Westernization that's so close to it's source due to TsuPro being more directly involved.
>>
>>19744383
Maybe I'm just being stupid, but it really comes across to me like in early western releases/versions of foreign media,
on top of names being changed obviously so that the new audience can better relate to (and better pronounce) the characters,

they'd also change names just for the sake of it, like they feel some sort of unwritten obligation to, I guess to distinguish it from the original?

I bring this up because what exactly is wrong with the name Gridman? Servo just sounds really boring & generic in comparison.

Again maybe I'm just being stupid but that REALLY irks me for no reason.
>>
>>19742603
Really cool shit
>>
>>19741379
What the heck indeed, funny how hyouman is here considering he came from a failed second pilot of a big cat themed hero after jaguarman
>>
>>19744604
I guess they wanted to be more unique? Remember TsuPro was approving things so they had final say at the end of the day. Plus other names were left alone so who knows.
>>
I love the twist that he's been Demon King Psycho disguised as a human the entire time watching over Sharivan to learn his every move. It's a really neat way to take what's typically done as a budget and time constraint and spin it into something creative.
>>
>>19744604
I guess it was to go with a more familiar "future" term like Servo rather than Grid even though power grid should have been a fairly common term.

Maybe it was just so people didn't go to "Gridiron" and think Gridman was a football player
>>
>>19744628
Definitely a package deal.
>>
>>19743223
So I recently watch the 9th episode but confused about one thing
Is Amatsu just taking over the life of the original Matsuko? I mean Amatsu (as a Commander) is physically different from Matsuko but we never see her face, then she just "replace" the real Matsuko after her team won the fight. So Koharu didn't exactly have fake memories about her, right? Childhood Matsuko is different from AMatsuko.

There were alienizers that got the death penalty for crimes not pertaining to murder and there are no court appeals so he's not exactly wrong. Dekaranger did glorify police brutality.
>>
>>19747476
Its a bit dumb but at the same time if you’re not interested in mecha, you wouldn’t sub it, so its not a leap in logic to say if you don’t like the police you’re not going to sub a police drama. Says nothing about the shows itself, just personal preference.
>>
>>19747476

Getting sick of this ACAB shit.
>>
>>19747476
I mean, that's understandable. If even watching stuff about police makes you mad then you probably shouldn't engage with that.

That said though, I think it's better to maintain a degree of separation between fiction and reality and remember that the fiction you consume doesn't always reflect who a person is.
>>
When I was first watching Sharivan I was kinda annoyed with how often they'd blue ball you on Gavan not transforming but after seeing the final episode last night I'm glad they did this. Seeing Sharivan go from an impulsive kid protecting the forest to being in a battle with a space demon king almost entirely on his own really helped cement him as an equal with Gavan during the final battle. Even though it totally a budget thing I liked how when they reused stock footage for their special attacks and vehicles they'd show one's sequence then the other not giving either precedence.
>>
>>19748079
>That said though, I think it's better to maintain a degree of separation between fiction and reality and remember that the fiction you consume doesn't always reflect who a person is.
Hear hear. I don't see enough people who bother to separate the art from the artist.
>>
>>19748793
Not just that, but they can't seem to separate themselves from the artist.

Like, just as an examples, if they liked a song that John Lennon wrote. Somehow, that makes them complicit in beating his first wife or some shit.

Everyone has different standards, and there are approximately 1,000 other different live action children's shows to watch that do not revolve around cops. Why work for free on a thing that is going to bring you down?
>>
>>19751854
I agree with your statement.

My contention is that the events of last year ruining your enjoyment of a show so divorced from them is very silly and probably shows you take many things too seriously.

I would 100% understand if that reaction was for a current show like Brooklyn 99, which would look very divorced from reality after last year. But a bit of old toku? It's a reach.
>>
>>19751877
>But a bit of old toku? It's a reach.
I would agree to disagree. It can understand why it would seem silly, but you have to consider that everything we are dealing with in the present day is the result of decades and decades of effectively punishing poor people for being poor. Plus you wouldn't want some poor scrubber to get canceled :D
>>
How many of Tsuburaya's non-Ultraman shows have been subbed?
>>
>>19751885
Well I'd rather go with not giving cops training worth a Taco Bell shit and then developing a cop worship culture that makes many of them think they're the last line between us and Mad Max while patrolling a damned Wal Mart lot, rather than "punishing poor people for being poor." Though I think I know some of the elements you're talking about.

And yeah, if they have any concern about legalities raining down on them, that's a valid reason to decide to skip out. Fun isn't fun if you're worried about multinats destroying you.

If they're worried about twitter cancelling, that's dumb too. Just ignore twitter and it goes away. Those idiots feed off of the power of a response. They're like some imaginary monster from a Disney Channel kids movie. They literally only have the power you give them.

>>
>>19751943
I would assume the subbers and translators they got for it were from a former British colony. But it does fit, he gets mugged by a couple of street thugs in this episode.
>>
>>19751951
Chav is just so particular to British culture location and slang it can't be the best fit. Nor the word a quality translator would have picked. If you squint I guess it works, but it's not a good choice.

>>

It really is! I was working on tidying up the existing subs with the barely-watchable timing, but it quickly became clear that it was a bigger job than just fixing said god-awful timing and, well, real life got in the way.
I was hoping to do two half-series batches, but I only got as far as three of the episodes, which are here:

Could someone with a Toei Junk Film subscription on Amazon Prime get a rip of Finger 5 no Daibouken? Finger 5 was like a Japanese equivalent of the Jackson 5, and one of their songs even appeared in episode 48 of Ultrama Taro. This was released for one of Toei's Manga Matsuri events.

Tsuburaya's new Mirrorman uploads also use TOKU's subs, making the rumor that they made those subs themselves considerably more likely.
>>
>>19754129
I thought it was generally accepted that all of these subs came directly from Tsubu - that's why the YT uploads for Gridman/80/etc had the same subs as previous releases on streaming sites.

Yeah, that's the one. Apparently they were so popular that the name of the Summer 1974 Manga Matsuri was changed to "Let's Play with Finger 5! Toei Manga Matsuri", which was and still is unprecidented for an idol group to headline the Manga Matsuri title.

Toku HD's subs for Agito and 555 are atrocious in the same way. The prevailing theory is that they were machine translation based on a Spanish translation by a different company for South American territories. The subs on Toei's channel are not the same. All the subs from Toku HD are trash.

Out of Japanese productions it's probably all just a matter of budget. Again, they do not have the ability to throw money at the screen that Hollywood does.

>Executive producer, Mr. Rekihiko Kadokawa, said that his ambition was to "make a movie of tremendous scale" and that he wanted to "prove that we can make a hero adventure in Japan that can compete with the American 'Avengers' series. There have been talks of a remake of "Daimajin," but it has never come to fruition. Miike said, "It was inevitable that Daimajin would be revived now, in this age. I hope you enjoy this slightly annoying outburst of love! I hope you enjoy the slightly annoying love rampage!

I hope and pray to the god of the mountain that a true, proper, fourth Daimajin film will be on the horizon

>>
>>19754885
I think it helps that even though their CGI isn't as good, they know it and don't go for realism. There's more style in how they use it and filters and effects and whatever to make it all feel like a choice, rather than a lack of money and skill.
>>
>>19754869
The Daimajin movies are really somber and really fucking downers. They're good, but it's it's not the kind of stupid fun shit you would expect to see on Gamera or Godzilla movies. Maybe the closest one in tone would be the first Godzilla. Kurosawa meets Godzilla is sort of accurate, but it's one of the really serious Kurosawa movies and plays like one of his samurai dramas until the very end. Daimajin himself have very little screen time in his own movies.

Every Daimajin film is basically just Throne of Blood if Toshiro Mifune was stamped to death in the last five minutes by a vengeful terracotta local deity embodying his sins rather than his own guys turning him into a pincushion. The ratio of dude in a suit stamping a minature set into dust to period samurai movie is about the same as your average kaiju action to weird- sci-fi plot monster movie.
>>
>>19751961
The Mill Creek sets all have better subs than the official streaming equivalent. The booklets that come with them though are definitely the work of ESL translators, though as of Leo those have been improving too. There's still bits of weird syntax and the odd spelling error in them, but the shows themselves are fine. Hopefully that'll go the same for the early Heisei Ultra shows when they get to Tiga/Mebius.

https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E4%BA%94%E9%BE%99%E5%A5%87%E5%89%91%E5%A3%AB
It's a real shame because:
a) It featured a rare magical kyodai hero
b) It allegedly would have featured three more humans being granted power in addition to the Blue Dragon Swordsman that we saw, along with a fifth warrior of some description.
d) That Blue Dragon Swordsman design is the tits.
e) Despite all of the issues, the 3 episodes we got were actually pretty great.

The copyright was still held by Tsuburaya Yumekobo (said separate production company) as of 2014, but no idea where it lies now, as Tsuburaya Dream Factory supposedly came out of Tsuburaya Communications, which may have been part of the wider Tsuburaya Enterprises. So, whilst Hideaki was ousted from Tsuburaya Productions, he may not have actually left the Tsuburaya Enterprises umbrella, but I don't know enough to really say.

>It allegedly would have featured three more humans being granted power in addition to the Blue Dragon Swordsman that we saw, along with a fifth warrior of some description.
These silhouettes may be our only real glimpse at them. A Sentai-like team of kyodai heroes would've been an interesting, if potentially somewhat impractical, proposition to say the least, and it looks like said 'fifth warrior' might've been some form of 'mystical mecha'-like thing.
>>
>>19767799
Staff who supposedly worked on it included director Masaki Harada (Tiga/Dyna/Gaia/Cosmos/Ultra Q Dark Fantasy/Ryukendo - it was his very last work before passing in 2008), action director Kenji Tanigaki (Rurouni Kenshin), vehicle/kaiju designers Akihiko Iguchi (Loads of Tsubu and Toho stuff) and the "God of Clouds" himself, Fuchimu Shimakura.
>>19767942
Some details on the other members:
>The series, made with the Chinese market in mind, mixes science fiction with mystical concepts from that country, such as Feng Shui. According to Hideaki Tsuburaya, this was intentional in order to be familiar with local customs. In addition to Seiryu, there would also be warriors based on the other Four Heavenly Gods of China, namely, Suzaku ( Shu Que in Chinese, Red Bird), Genbu ( Xuan Wu , Black Turtle) and Byakko ( Bai Hu , White Tiger). And they would use the powers of the five elements五行( Gogyo / Wu Hang): Fire, Water, Earth, Tree and Metal, which interact with each other and have relations of strength and weakness. All these aspects are widely used in Japanese works.

And yet, the warriors would merge in one when necessary to face a more powerful enemy. They would likely form the 黄龍 ( Kouryu / Huang Long , Yellow Dragon), but there is no indication of the name of this combination.

After Hideaki disappeared, that company is supposedly in the hands of his uncle Akira, who also heads Tsuburaya Entertainment, who were responsible for the shows in >>19767822 (so I don't even know if those can ever show up on Imagination either).

Rights to the Tsuburaya Entertainment stuff (Those heroine shows, Skull Soldier, Mikadroid, Star Bows, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner, etc) MAY now be in the hands of Art Port now.
How that works for the likes of Superhuman Detective Shuwatch (Clumsy detective solves crimes with Ultraman?) I dunno.

Wonder how Hideaki feels about Ultraman proper being so mainstream in China now. Even his Nexus is so somewhat popular.

I'd imagine he's happy about the way that people view Nexus in general these days, but yeah, probably particularly happy about any traction it now has in China.

This movie kinda sucked. It was cool seeing Laiha from Geed show off her sword skills again, and I liked how it pulled a fast one near the end. The Killgis was a cool looking monster costume too. But the fights were all really underwhelming and seemed like it had a bit too much going on.

The English dub is hilariously bad though. Would recommend it based on that alone.

Is there a tokusatsu series with a megaman-esque gimmick? A hero that steals his enemies powers? Only thing that I recall having something like this is KR Decade but that's a stretch.

How is Sybersquad longer than Gridman?
>Sybersquad 53
>Gridman 39

Do they just straight up reuse footage? The show isnt like a saban production where they have their own suits and props.
>>
>>19770896

They reuse a lot of footage. And they straight up end and then restart the plot too.
>>
Dogengers is really one of those shows I wanted to like but I just keep shaking my head at most of it.

What, like they had an episode that was a "The End" and then bullshitted a new continuation? Or did they just churn out more monster of the week episodes? Did the new story end? Details man.
>>
>>19771105

Yeah. They beat Kilo Khan and saved Malcolm, but then just undid it all and then went back to business as usual. It's so fucking weird.
>>
>>19771134
In story they undid it? Or did they just air already filmed weekly nonsense after the finale? And did they re-end it? Or does the show end unresolved?

They just sorta undo it. Khan comes back and then the plot just keeps going. I honestly don't remember the actual finale.

Egaoh is sponsored by copic and handles a lot of merchandise for other local heroes (both design and manufacturing) , King promotes green tea in general and does other traditional japanese activities like ikebana.

I really don’t like how it just smashes together different properties like it’s trying to be the Avengers. An adaptation of Red Baron alone could’ve been cool.
>>
>>19770896
They reuse the exact same fights. Hell, they even reuse multiple fights in some episodes and pretend it’s all new.

Even weirder is that despite this, there are three Gridman fights that they don’t even touch or use: the second Shinobilar fight, the spider kaiju fight, and the big fight from episode 26/27. Don’t ask me why.

>Episode 39 has Kilokahn convincing Malcolm to get him more power/access to the Digital World. He gets a power boost and kills Sam’s friends, then basically comatoses Sam’s body. Sam escapes into the Digital World, kills Kilokahn, then somehow reboots the timeline so everyone’s alive. Kilokahn was backed up onto a floppy disk and is released by Malcolm, who can’t remember that Kilokahn betrayed him.
>Suddenly one of the characters, the comedic relief, leaves off screen in Poochie style, and leaves a note saying he’s really an alien, and he’s immediately replaced by a surfer dude character.
>Very last episode doesn’t even have Sam in it. Tanker, Sam’s best friend in the show, has to become Servo, and they reuse the footage from episode 1.
>>
>>19772295
Long story short, the producers thought they were getting cancelled, but actually weren't.
>>
>>19772427
They also expected Sigma to happen, this setting up Tanker
>>

Everybody knows about the 70's, Tsuburaya series Triple Fighter,
similar to Godman & Greenman, it's formatted as its episodes being split into shorts shown daily.

The big difference however, is that a combined episode of Greenman is 8 minutes.

A combined episode of Triple Fighter is 31.

Despite this, the Japanese Wikipedia page lists NO CHARACTERS besides the main 3 & the villains/MOTWs.

& since most of the series can be found on BilliBilli,

https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1kx411y7ZJ/

I can't wait to find out how the FUCK it makes use of its running time given its format & lack of secondary characters.

Depends what I feel like, what raws I can find, and what doesn't get licensed really. I didn't do Mabuyer season 2 because it got enough budget to be generic rather than endearingly cheap. Them replacing almost the entire cast didn't help.

Well, if you're ever looking for raws or inspiration, do ask here - there're a bunch of things of varying length that I'd love to see tackled, and I'd happily try to help out with timing and such.

Their views made up one reason of a list of a list of three (Seemingly the least important, also). Y'Know what we need more of?

spy/secret agent themed toku.

Except I SPECIFICALLY mean old school type spy stuff, like James Bond, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., The Avengers (the British one), Get Smart, etc.

Haven't seen Go-Busters but as far as I can tell seems less like that & more like modern Tom Cruise Mission Impossible.

COULD BE WRONG THOUGH, PROBABLY WRONG IN FACT.

But yeah otherwise there's Giant Robo, Strada 5, Goranger, & JAKQ.
