***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post images whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting images.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data from images when they're uploaded to the website from your phone, including the orientation display tag. To solve this, save your images out separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the image itself for you.

--MECHA MUSUME GROUPBUILD--
Build and customize a mecha musume/female mecha kit to your stylings. Examples of mecha musume kits/lines include:
>Build Fighters Super Fuminas/Mobile Dolls/Figure-rise Standards/etc
>Frame Arms Girls
>Megami Devices
>A.T.K.Girls
>Aoshima's V.F.G.
Examples of female mechas include:
>Feminine mobile suits (Nobel Gundam, GN Archer, Farsia, Woundwort, etc)
>Female SDs (IE: Diao-chan Qubeley)
>Feminine LBXs (IE: Kunoichi, Pandora)
>Fei Yen
>Valsione
>Strelizia
You're free to do whatever else with your entry so long as you use any of those kits (or something similar) as a basis. If you're feeling ballsy, you can try kitbashing a MS with a female figure out of your own parts as well.

Send a description along with both WIP and Finished images of your build to gunplaplamo@gmail.com

Let's see some more WIPs!
>>
Asked on /wip/ but Im asking here too - Im not sure about those "wing blades" I did. From front they look a bit "fat". Of course, I could sand them more but Im not sure if this is good idea and more than that - Im really afraid that I would fuck up 4 days work. Unless there is tested and trusted method for sanding blade angles over larger surfaces with very low angle. And of course, I could leave it like this. It's just that once I glue it, it will be much harder to work on.

Im not sure and this blocks me from continuing work. And clock is ticking...

Genuinely stuck lads, I need some help.
The two ball joints were going to be used to mount a set of heavy legs, making a kind of mech eso suit, but I don't think I have time, parts, or the ability to do them, or at least do them well enough.
Should I instead make some weapon pods to go There? What do you lot think?

So what is exact paint setup for a good preshading? Besides pulling the trigger lightly. Higher paint dilution and lower pressure? Or just dilution?
>>
Musume theme was a mistake
>>
>>19634794
You are going to spray really close so low psi, and at low psi you need the paint to be diluted slightly more than usual so you get a nice atomization. Though it really just depends on what you are spraying.

You have to remember most of the people in these threads are not very good at kitbashing kits together, despite how much shitposting about "true builders" or whatever there tends to be. Let's use pic related as an example since it's the group build with the most entries to examine. Even with a theme as simple as "Design a mobile suit that you'd use in GBN" most people to simple repaints with a few parts swapped here and there (IE: Gundam Vrana is just a Harute with Grimgerde legs, Blackavar is just a Cherudim with Seravee legs and a EZ-SR head, the A-Fata is a G-Self with some V2 parts glued on, and so on). Hell someone submitted a straight-built Leo with a few builders parts slapped on and called it a day after coloring in the Leo's visor with a gundam marker. There's a grand total of 6 entries that made an actual kitbashing effort instead of just going the "Swap some limbs and paint it" route most people did (Gundam Vanderbilt Limited, Engel Schlachter, C-Goose, Valor K, Doctor Gallass, Loveless Gundam, and Adele Glyph).

I'm not trying to say that the people who only did a limb swap/paint job are bad entries, I'm saying that most people here don't have a creative bone when it comes to kitbashing stuff together (Like how almost every entry in the 30MM group build stuck to the same Alto/Portanova shape/structure instead of using the 30MM bits to make something new). Polandanon gets a lot of flak when it comes to his builds but holy shit at least he jumped into the scratchbuilding rabbit hole that 80% of the thread is too afraid to even touch.

We don't get those sort of numbers for group builds anymore because the constant rise in shitposting in these threads has slowly driven most of the actual builders in these threads out.

And don't try saying there's less people participating in the group builds because of bad themes being picked, because the themes have little to no impact. The Re:Rise Build Divers group build that took place like two years after the first one only barely managed to get more than half the number of entrants the first one did, despite having an extra month and a half to work with than the first one. Group builds aren't declining because of the themes, they're declining alongside the quality of the thread.

I'd say it's more mecha in general as a genre and community that is declining, not the thread. Don't get me wrong, the classics are still great, but there hasn't been anything noteworthy as an installation to the genre for almost a decade. NT was shit. IBO was shit. Macross Delta was shit. Build Fighters is shit. Origin was Zeon/Charwank. Mazinger Z infinity was just ok. Franxx was shit. We need a new transfusion of decent mecha anime.

To corroborate on my stance on this
>Groupbuild 1 (Ace Customs)- 14 participants (2016)
>GB2 (Graze) - 15 participants (2016-17)
>GB3 (Melee) - 16 participants (2017)
>GB4 (Thicc) - 18 participants (2017)
>GB5 (Ranged) - 16 participants (2017)
>GB6 (Civilian) - 8 participants (2017-18)
>GB7 (Fantasy) - 15 participants (2018)
>GB8 (Divers)- 24 participants (2018)
>GB9 (IGBX) - 3 participants (2018-19)
>GB10 (Ground Warfare) - 12 participants (2019)
>GB11 (Space) - 5 participants (2019)
>GB12 (Divers 2) - 13 participants (2019-20)
>GB13 (Extreme Conditions) - 7 participants (2020)
>GB14 (30MM) - 8 participants (2020-21)

There hasn't been a single groupbuild past the first Divers theme to surpass the numbers of the first group build in terms of entries, whereas all of the first 8 group builds minus the civilian theme (The sole outlier in this whole thing) managed to at least hit 14+ entrants.

Interestingly enough, all of the grade-raging, reddit reposts, and other miscellaneous forms of shitposting littering this general lately seem to originate sometime 2019, matching up with the stark decline in groupbuild participation starting with the IGBX. There's a connection here people.

This anon is right, and it's not just here. A lot of the more popular boards have been hit by shitposting, political pozzing and in some cases bunkerchan invasion/colonisation attempts, resulting in a notable drop in quality.
I started coming here January last year when a secret santa got me into gunpla and even in this short period of time I have seen a notable increase in shitposting and drop in quality, with only mild periods of respite when the mods and jannies did their job.
I take part in the groupbuild, though I missed the deadline for divers round 2, and I want to continue to do so, but I fear for the future of these threads if the shitposters and reddit/bunkercuck/v/ incursion is not stopped.

I only used a standard Alto because it was all I had that was from 30MM and it was already sitting in my junk box besides many 30MM weapon sets and I wanted to enter the group build at the time. that's my excuse for not wanting to buy more 30MM kits to make something beyond a humanoid mech, it was was a minimum effort filler build. Cant say for everyone else though as I remember people posting about trying to find 30MM kits in time, but its there choice in how to approach making something unique. If you do not like the stuff that a few anons here submitted, why not be the change you want to see and make something you think is good?

I'm painting my first kit (MG Barbados) and I'm hoping for some input on the color scheme. Since a lot of the inner frame is visible I wanted to make it stand out and I thought doing it mostly in copper would look good with gun metal grey being the main armor color. Should I go with the brighter Tamiya copper or the more realistic and darker looking Vallejo liquid copper? It'll be over black primer so the Tamiya would be slightly darker but I haven't done a test sample of it over the primer yet.

I wish I could be better. I feel fairly discouraged from participating this time because I know anything I could make would only get flak as a low effort work compared to the crazy shit most people are working on. The only time I managed to participate was the 2nd GBF and mostly because I had way too much free time and a batch of secondhand kits I managed to salvage. Now I can only work with shit I already own, like the GN Archer (which is awful to work with being so small) and a Fei Yen (which is a terribly flimsy kit overall). I just can't figure any way to make something out of them due to their limitations and it's frustrating.

2.0, Origin, or 3.0 if you could only have one mg granddaddy?

I really like the Origin for it's posability and detail plus the Origin beam rifle is neat and the shoulder cannon is cool.

BUT, I reaaally love the 2.0's proportions and classic anime look so much. The core fighter gimmick is a drag on it though so much so that I just glued it in place since I never remove it anyway.

I'll admit the 3.0 is a distant third for me though, you'll really have to sell me on it. I don't really care for the proportions and the Real Grade style to it. Buuut in it's favor you get the core block so you can have the fighter separate and it makes the torso way more secure.

Oh yeah, there's the ver ka. But you have to really like the design because it's super dated engineering wise.

For reference I have the 2.0 and the Origin.

that's not the issue here. you can get very thin putties that are more like pastes, designed for filling tiny gaps like what you're seeing. if you're using something more like milliput, you'll never be able to get it thin enough to fill those holes - it'll just go over the top, and the hole will re-appear when you sand.

Imagine going to an art gallery and the second you criticize someones work they run up to you and tell you to post your work.
>>
>>19638139
I understand you dont have to be a master to be a critique but this place takes it to another level, if you are in this thread you have probably built a gunpla kit before. so your example would be more along the lines of someone who made a crude macaroni drawing is judging someone with a slightly better macaroni drawing.

Being a snapshitter is a choice, not a defect that you're born with. Making fun of you for being lazy is perfectly fine. It's not like we're making fun of you having 1 arm or being blind or whatever. If you actually had a reason for not being able to paint we wouldn't call you a snapshitter. If you're offended by someone calling you something that you CHOOSE to be then maybe you should choose to improve yourself. Anyone who says snapbuilds look fine is lying to themselves.

>>
>>19638485
that just sounds like being a mindless consoomer with extra steps
>>
>>19638458
>I’m not sure what makes them “better”
they are generally better because those tools offer different style of blades for..well scribing(i.e. different thicknesses, flat blades, etc).

ive never really messed with scribing before personally since im bad at thinking of panel line designs. but ive done some minor stuff and just did it with an xacto knife.
>>
>>19638485
Nah there is no reason to display an unpainted kit. I can't stand non-shaded kits and even with a gloss/matte coat bare plastic lets light through making it look like a cheap toy.
>>
I just spilled a bunch of panel wash and cracked 4 parts of my gundam and dyed it black as well FUCK
>>
>>19638491
This whole hobby is built around consumerism if you haven't noticed.
>Buy kit(s)
>Buy cutting tools (X-acto, nippers, etc)
>Buy various types of glue/plastic cement
>Buy sandpaper
>Buy putty
>Buy detail parts/plasticard/pla-plate/etc
>Buy paint supplies (Paint, paint thinner, brushes, etc)
>Buy an airbrush, a compressor, and parts to build a spray booth with
>Buy weathering pastels/oil washes
>Buy decals
>Repeatedly purchase more kits/paints/tools/other supplies when needed
It makes no difference if you buy $200 worth of Gundam models or a $50 Gundam kit and $150 worth of painting/building supplies, it's still the same level of consumerism within the same hobby.
>>
is this worth getting? or is it just packing the same exact 3 model kits together with bonus stand?
>>
>>19638485
I do this. All my painted builds go in cabinet but straight builds go on wip shelves until I choose one for paint. Better to look at it and casually come up with paint ideas than sitting in the box being forgotten.
>>
ok am i just blessed by the gunpla gods or something?

ive never had issues with panel wash cracking parts or even neat white spirt
>>
>>19638485
no, the pile of boxes i have is enough motivation to paint.

i don't want to end up spending a gorillian on kits that will never end up looking good.
>>
>>19638485
I've only been selectively painting parts of my models, like vernier ports and cameras.
However, gonna be a bit more ambitious with the 2019 Ex-S I just got and make its feet and wingtips red like the first version of the MG had.
Not that I dislike the blue, it's just that red is better on those parts.
>>
What should I use to topcoat the paint before weathering (ak interactive filters, tamiya powder and oil paints)? Flat top coat only or semi-gloss works too?
>>
>>19638550
Gloss is actually best for before weathering. The smoothness makes it easier to correct any potential mistakes

good job anon, looks like you forgot some nubs though
>>
>>19638565
Not bad, especially for one of your first attempts. Next time try thinning your paints a little more and waiting longer between coats. You want the paint to look slightly wet at first. Seems like you tried to do one big coat instead of a couple thin ones. Also you should try sanding the nubmarks more.
>>
>>19638550
satin
>>
>>19638574
yeah I realized that I probably should've painted the grey parts that would actually show up in the final build, that's just bare plastic so the nubs are obvious

>>19638583
that's exactly what happened, I panicked a bit when the paint came out a little wet so I thickened it up. How could you tell?
>>
>>19638485
No anon, you need to be painting everything like a pro or else anonymous users online will disapprove of how you build your plastic robots. That's terrible to imagine!
>>
>>19638601
>How could you tell?
Because I did the same thing before lol you actually want the paint look wet at first. Wait like 15 minutes for it to dry then spray again. It's called building up coats and it helps you control how thick you want the paint to come out.
>>
>>19638583
> Next time try thinning your paints a little more
different anon but i see people say that a lot. what exactly are you looking at to know someone didnt thin their paints enough? is it because the armor parts look like they have a slight texture of drywall?
>>
>>19638628
It's kinda hard to put it into words but I struggled a lot with thinning ratios at first so I immediately recognize when someone made the same mistake as me
>>
>>19638628
yea when paint is too thick it has a weird, rough looking texture. Same thing happens when you spray too far because all the tiny paint balls dry in the air and don't really splatter on the primer like they're supposed to. Instead they pile up on each other.
>>
I've been a bareplastic snapfag my whole life, too pussy to do any sort of custom paint job or coat. Does top coating a suit really make it look all that good?
>>
>>19638628
Watch this

https://youtube.com/watch?v=wxWgsqSf74s

and take a look at thinned side and thick side. Once you saw both, it is easy to tell apart. However, same problem can arise when you apply second layer too early, essentially traping humidity between layers.
>>
>>19638694
It's literally paint without color so yeah if you spray it well most people will assume you painted everything

To those who hand brush
What ratio do you lot put for your paint to thinner to flow/retarder? More specifically for vallejos stuff, as this mecha stuff is drying too fast and doesn't seem to be flowing across the surface properly like model color.
>>
>>19638788
ditch the thinner altogether and replace with flow improver. 10:10:1 paint, improver, retarded for mecha color for me. non air paints, i do 7:10:1. air paints 10:7:1. if it's for panel lining, then subtract 2 drops for the paint.

it's what works for ME. you could be living in the death valley or a oymyakon or whatever, so it might not work for you, just keep on experimenting. and if you're handpainting, i would ditch thinner altogether and just stock up on flow improver.
>>
>>19638767
it was pretty painful to be honest. I had a ton of issues due to bad thinner ratios in the beginning and I also didn't know you could disassemble the head of the airbrush so it kept clogging. by the end though I was flying through coats, really looking forward to whenever the FAZZ or Sazabi restocks so I can try a custom colour next

I feel like I've seen this posted here before. The original intent and color choices aren't bad, I can see the vision. However, there are multiple points worth noting here. I can see that the plastic was not primed, the paint was not properly thinned, no masking tape was used to get clean edges, and you did yourself a disservice trying to paint white over bare red plastic. These issues are fixable if you're willing to accept constructive criticism and set aside the time to practice. I like to practice on spare parts as well as spoons, but spare parts will provide a better representation of the kinds of surfaces, corners, and edges you'd encounter on a full gunpla kit.

Vallejo's black acrylic primer (my preference for ease of use) can be applied using a dry brush without thinning, gives good coverage, and constricts while curing. As long as it isn't globbed onto the plastic in 1-2 coats then the surface will be sufficiently primed. Thinning your paints will depend heavily on the brand and pigment, so that's just a process every painter will have to experience on their own as they get a feel for their paints. I mostly use Vallejo's model color line. For hand painting, you'll often hear 2 thin coats (first gives uneven coverage, second gives full coverage), but I prefer to go thinner than that. This gives me room to layer any off-white colors over the black primer if I need to paint a brighter color on top, it gives me room to brush on 1-2 coats of varnish at the end, and it helps me cover brush strokes better as I apply 3-5 very thin coats perpendicularly. As for the last two criticisms, invest in some hobby masking tape because it'll just make for a better painting experience and yield cleaner edges, and if painting pure white be sure to first apply an off-white undercoat over your primer (if not already off-white or lighter grey).

I hope this helps. Don't be afraid to fuck up. We all do.

Was hard. I dropped it like halfway through and stopped painting. I went and bought some skeletons to get back into it. Way harder than painting minis. Minis are designed to be hand painted, but painting the shinanju felt like I was fighting against it the whole time. Apart from the raised parts.
>>
>>19640164
Despite the setback and challenge I think you did a great job on the Sinanju, the raised details stand out nicely. I do not like the cluttered colors and details on most SDs, so I actually appreciate that you used fewer colors and didn't add them where they were not needed.

Paint another. I think you'll find it more enjoyable the second time around. Now you know what to expect.
>>
just wondering but how are your guys local gunpla hobby store?
living in southern cali, the ones near me all dont look like your traditional hobby store. for some reason they just look like shitty chink cellphone repair stores. they dont feel welcoming at all which is why i usually avoid them unless they have a kit i really want and dont want to wait/pay for shipping.
>>
>>19640208
Yeah I think a HG will actually be better. In terms of surface area, the pieces are much smaller. SD's have some fucking fat zones that ate hard to get coverage on.

I considered highlighting it with lighter green around raised surfaces like you would with a mini, but I dunno how that would look. Maybe a light dry brush over edges might work. It's tempting.
