I was mainly aiming to encourage that anon to post more than just an image. That said, I always happy to hear any anon expound on why they like a show. I never personally got further that the two eps on TTW, but it wasn't for lack of enthusiasm as much as just forever having stuff I'm meaning to watch. I should at least watch the original movie, though, as it's only 100-ish minutes and I'll more than happily watch anything with Etsuko Shihomi in it.

I like Amemiya's work in general, but I could never get into Garo, despite trying out the first and second series. It just felt like the wrong kind of edgy for me. I really enjoyed the Tougen Flute special, though, so there's likely more stuff in the franchise I'd enjoy.

Is the Bima X movie still on Netflix? It seemed weird to me that they didn't have either series, but they had the epilogue movie that wrapped everything up and spent a significant amount of time on a dead villain's backstory, all of which you had zero context for if you just went in blind.
>>
>>19536613
It's a very early prototype of the stuff you'd see in Inoue's later shows like KRs Agito, Faiz, and Kiva. It's not terrible because it's before Inoue went full retard, but you can see the beginnings of what is to come.

Having watched Bokkun (raw)... it's alright. It has a lot of good going for it, and it is very cute, but it's also very unfocused and inconsistent. They frequently introduce new characters that just really disrupt the flow of the show.

Better than Robot Hacchan, but not even remotely CLOSE to as good as Robomaru.

For some people, they specifically think of it as shows from Japan, usually featuring a transforming (or at least suited) hero, but everything from The Twilight Zone to Star Trek to Lois & Clark to Thunderbirds to ...Barney the Dinosaur would count from a Japanese perspective.

>>
>>19540394
Austists on this board tend to lose their shit about it, but when someone says “Tokusatsu” they are generally referring to a sub genre of transforming hero/science fiction that tends to follow the lines of a live action hero fighting off monsters in a MOTW fashion. People tend not to refer to superhero shows like CW as Toku because in context they are simply a different thing. No one says Flash is their favorite Tokusatsu, for example, and if it’s American they’ll usually reference something like Captain Power or Power Rangers. Technically it’s all-encompassing, but in discussions there a context.
>>
In an English context, I'd define tokusatsu as all Japanese works that fit the Japanese definition of tokusatsu (notable use of special effects), plus any international work purposely trying to emulate those works.
>>
Just because Precure have transformations, they're not toku.
>>
>>19541080
People who say Precure is toku are retarded, animation by definition can't be tokusatsu. The live action Sailor Moon and the Girl X Heroine series are actual magical girl toku shows.
>>

Your best bet is stuff like the local hero fest programme, because 90% of local heroes don't have magazine spots and even less appear on TV.

>>19540928
>when someone says “Tokusatsu” they are generally referring to a sub genre of transforming hero/science fiction that tends to follow the lines of a live action hero fighting off monsters in a MOTW fashion
Using tokusatsu in that context feels a little off now that we're more familiar with the plethora of shows like the Fushigi Comedy series and their ilk. It's all tokusatsu, and we can use terms like kyodai/giant hero if we want to be more specific.

So whats the wierdest or most interesting concept or theme you have seen for a local hero type of character? Most of what I've seen seem to be based on a certain location or kind of company.

Second season's issue had a plot that didn't really deserve the amount of episodes it had and it felt dragging when being watched weekly like i did, but maybe its better binged but its also a more ambitious show that explores the setting way more so its sort of compensated.

I’ve only seen the first 5 episodes of the first series. It’s fun enough, and has some good fight scenes.

I also saw the movie because it was on Netflix, and even with a coherent concept of what was happening it was pretty damn bad. A massive chunk of the beginning has nothing to do with anything else, and the movie just feels like a bunch of scenes slapped together.

Films: Zeiram I&II, Lady Battle Cop, Cutie Honey
TV I've seen: Vanny Knights. Sukeban Deka doesn't really contain anything you could call tokusatsu, but had a lot of staff from Metal Hero and such. It's also great and the first two are subbed, along with spiritual successor Shoujo Commander Izumi. The first two episodes of the female-fronted installments of the Fushigi Comedy Series are on the Toei channel. I guess you can also count the wonderful Kawaii! JeNny, which got subs for two episodes.
TV I haven't seen: Kamen Tenshi Rosetta, Cutie Honey: The Live, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, Miracle Tunes.

Wanting to fandub all that sounds like an insane project, you would have more luck either with a movie or one of the big 3 tokus since there's more fanbase to interact with, maybe some people could dub for free.

Next Lion-Maru episode should hopefully be out at some point tomorrow.

In the meantime lemme walk you through how this goes.

I get up anywhere between 9 & 12.

I hit up a Brazilian friend of mine to help translate the dubbed episodes,
of which this current episode is the 2nd to last of, I can do the Portuguese subbed episodes myself.

I only have until 7 before he runs out of time zone,

I have to take 2 hours out of my daylight hours to exercise because y'know, health's important & whatnot.

I have the attention span of an amnesiac goldfish and am distracted just as easily, so you can imagine what that does to my productivity,

& my friend's not always available to help at exactly the most opportune times because obviously he's got a life too.

So with all that combined, in a single day I can get about, at most half an episode, on average anywhere between 5-10 minutes.
>>
>>19566442
Yami wo Terasu Mono is pretty good but they overuse CGI in it, which you’ll probably find annoying if like me you love the suits of this series. I haven’t finished Makai no Hana yet but I’m enjoying it so far, but I can see why some would think it’s retreading old ground. I like Raiga and Mayuri though, so that helps

Samefagging, but does my nigga come back? All time MOTW right there.

This episode really encapsulates one of P Productions’ strongest aspects: Their ability to characterize their villains and monsters. A lot of Toku around that time tended to lean into just having every enemy be about the same but with different powers/designs, but P really had an incredible ability to create enemies that you cared for and felt very memorable one way or another. What they lacked in budget they made up for in personality and concepts.
>>
>>19575261
He does come back later, won’t say when though.

And as for P-Productions’ villains, in my experience Goa/Rodak wasn’t technically a very interesting villain, but he was a great, highly entertaining & memorable one, thanks to both his design & his excellent voice performances in both the English & Japanese versions.

Dr. Gori was given slightly more depth, & combined with again fantastic voice performances in both versions of the show, he’s one of the best toku villains of the 70’s.

Lion-Maru has Nezuganda, & later Tiger Joe.

And I haven’t seen anything from Monster Prince, Fuun Lion Maru, Tiger Seven or Zaborgar so I can’t speak for them.
>>
>>19575399
Spectreman had a lot of memorable and characterized villains and monsters. Dr. Gori, Karas, Dustman, Satan King, Magullah, Moon Thunder, Zuno, Kyudora, etc.
>>
>>19575452
Damn, I forgot about Dustman, & I need really to watch the rest of Spectreman.

Working on episode 15 of Lion-Maru.
For the rest of the series barring episode 22, I'll have to work with the Portuguese subs of dubious reliability.
Despite that I've been able to do the first half of the episode with acceptable accuracy.

Nonetheless I'm still kinda anxious about tackling the series from this point forward.
Not that I plan to go on hiatus anytime soon, I absolutely intend to continue to the best of my ability so don't worry about that.

But it's just that I'm not ARR or Kingmenu & I actually care about the quality of my subs & don't wanna half-ass them.

Dude, Rush isn't even introduced until Megaman 3. Out of all the many bits and pieces Megaman is made out of I don't know why you would pick Casshern to push as the biggest and most important one.
>Kitamura: After that, the program ran smoothly. By the way, do you know the tokusatsu show Ninja Captor? I’m a bit of a tokusatsu hero fan. I think you probably already know this, but Mega Man had a lot of little influences from manga, anime, and tokusatsu. Astro Boy, Casshern, Time Bokan, Kikaider, Kamen Rider, and others too.
>Kitamura: Oh, that reminds me—it was Matsushita, too, who came up with the idea for Mega Man changing colors when his weapons changed.
>Ariga: That wasn’t an idea you had from the beginning?
>Kitamura: In the beginning, I imagined a character like Mega Man equipped with some kind of weapon, but when you transformed, your whole appearance would change. You know that little protrusion on the top-front of Mega Man’s helmet? When you changed weapons, it was supposed to change like the Ninja Captor character’s helmets, and show a little symbol depending on the weapon’s element (fire, water, lightning, etc).
>Ariga: Ah! So that was the idea behind the helmet design…!
>Kitamura: Unfortunately, for various reasons, we weren’t going to be allowed to use those symbols like that. But that design element was super important to me—it wasn’t really up for compromise. As I sat there fretting, Matsushita came over and said, “How about this?” What he showed me was the color change mechanic.

Ep 2 involved our hero going to work, and getting screamed at by his lady bosses, and ends it with him going to a bar. no hint of toku anything.

Ep 3 involved our hero talking up to ladies about orgasms, seeing a...pink ranger(?) who says her finishing move involves "fellatio" while the hero smiles suggestively at the camera. And then there's a 3 minute sequence involving ladies flashing their breasts at the camera. no toku action.

however, Ep 1 did have (very low budget) toku action, and the hero used guns and ended the fight saying "Coup de grace, biotch!" Plus, they have a nice OP song.

Note: I can't even watch Ep 1's beginning info-crawl without laughing because of the Ranger throwing middle-fingers underneath it.

One thing you’ve been really good at is keeping the phrasing perfect to what is being conveyed on screen. I have faith in you, and your subs have been better than anything ARR and Kingmenu have ever done.

Yeah but they need to buy Bandai's products first to enter the game and apparently it's a secret between the participants because the first rule of the girl gun lady club is you don't talk about the girl gun lady club. The deceased is retconned from existence
>>
>>19581588
once chicks find out that buying the plamo means they get to kill each other the kids will fly off the shelves
>>
>>19581594
How they could find out if the memories of the dead kid is erased from everyone's memories? Nobody remember it except for the participants. Girl Gun Lady is set on an AU where teen girls are into plastic dolls. Maybe it's the most bizarre shit I've seen in years. Shoujo Tsubaki is less bizarre
>>
>>19581601
chicks gossip
"we can kill each other" won't stay on the downlow for even a weekend
>>
>>19581552
I just didn't take that as them specifically being into plamo. Also fair enough about the other girl.
>>
>>19581355
I though that movie was pretty good fun, even if it was a departure from the 50's series in style..
>>
OK, so currently I'm trying to figure out episode 15 of Lion-Maru the same way I've figured out other parts I got stuck on.
Which is through a combination of the following context clues,

-using what I already know in Japanese.

-taking context clues from the episode itself, the Portuguese ARR-tier subs, & episode plot summaries on Japanese blogs.

-listening carefully to the dialogue to see if I can make out the words correctly,
& then typing out/looking up what I see to see if there are any real Japanese words that match.

-& also that translation subreddit, but only as an absolute last resort, because no way in hell I'm going to bug them multiple times over the remaining 40 episodes of the show,
because at that rate I might as well be asking for a full-time free translator.

And with all that in mind, I must very seriously ask,

ARE YOU GUYS SURE ABOUT THIS?

Because it's one thing to do just this one unimportant episode like this,
but to do the entire rest of the series like this, a whole FORTY episodes,

ARE YOU SURE?
>>
So with the end of Robomaru subbing, are any other sub groups displaying interest in other Fushigi Comedy stuff? Robomaru has been my jam and I love what I saw from Nemurin
>>
>>19582299
Nah, if the translated source moving forwards is of much lower quality, it might be time to reassess and maybe bow out. There's no specific threshold for these things but, like, I'd personally consider scrubbing Mirrorman's subs, but I wouldn't touch Jumborg Ace's.
>>
>>19582419
Noted, thanks. I’ve been very seriously considering ducking out anyway, but I really wish it didn’t have to come to this.

I like the show, I know a lot of y’all like the show, & I heard it gets super interesting from this point forward.

If nothing else hopefully what I’ve done can at least get a ball rolling for more competent people to tackle the series.

In the meantime, Barom-1 & Akumaizer 3 have Japanese scripts available, both shows I’d be very eager to see subbed.

Barom-1 however, does not have scripts available for episodes 2, 15, & 16.

& I’m thinking, perhaps I could try the approach I mentioned above for those three episodes, UNTIL better resources can be made available that is.

I’d be more comfortable doing it here than with Lion-Maru both because it’s only 3 random episodes instead of 40, & because Barom-1 has much more comprehensive and detailed plot summaries online than Lion-Maru does, which helps out A TON.

But if you guys would really prefer I just not try that approach at all, & I absolutely understand why you’d be uneasy about that, hell, as I said before, even if it’s made easier here I’M still uneasy about it, but Akumaizer is still an option.
>>
>>19582405
Nemurin is fucking wild, surreal, morally all-over-the-place and seemingly allergic to traditional narrative. Also, that fucking next episode preview music gets me every single time. I could definitely go for more of that.
>>
>>19582475
Just remember that translating from Japanese captions is a much taller order than translating from a Romance language like Portuguese and definitely not something to be taken on lightly.
If you want to have a go, I recommend that you try a smaller project. The resources below cover the Red Jaguar arc of Nanairo Kamen, if you were interested in trying your hand at it.

>>19582405
Bistrot Jurer might be doing something else after Robomaru...
>>
>>19582638
Well alternatively, Fuun Lion-Maru (which isn’t actually a chronological sequel & more like an AU retelling) & National Kid both have Portuguese dubs, & I have a Brazilian friend who helped me a ton with Lion-Maru, but he’s got his own life & id prefer to not have to bug him for help for a whole series. Too bad I don’t have an Italian friend otherwise Megaloman would also be an option.
>>
>>19582638
Actually now that I think about it, what I was thinking, is doing the first episode of Akumaizer 3 without any referencing from any previous English subs, & then comparing the translations.
>>
>>19582526
I watch the credits specifically for that crazily aggressive music haha. Nemurin's music in general is great, super dreamy and a lil bit off, just like the show.
>>19582985
That's super exciting! I didn't want to outright ask because I know after finishing a whole ass series having people ask when the next one is could be a bit frustrating. Looking forward to it
>>
>>19573890
You know what would been pretty great to see? An installment set in modern day japan like one fan film did back in the late 80s/early 90s
>>
>>19580553
Have you considered contacting any translators for help? Metallic frequently does collaborations so they might be able to pitch in if they got the time.
>>
>>19583673
Bold of you to assume I have money, a job, or financial independence.
>>
>>19583673
Metallic likely won't. He said when he retired that he wouldn't be adding any collaborations other than those that he already started. (He will not be involved with Jurer's next project.)
>>
I was told that translating from Japanese scripts isn't as easy as it looks, & I had a hard time believing that, so as an experiment, I'm gonna sub the first episode of Akumaizer 3 using only the Japanese script, not referencing either Toei's YouTube subs or fanmade subs, & then comparing the translations when I'm done.

This being an experiment has not stopped me from going super extra with the OP.
https://streamable.com/l6pq73
>>
>>19583873
Honestly amazed at Metallic's output despite being retired. Dude still collabs with two groups and subbed all of Cybercops out of the blue.
>>
>>19584064
3. He's involved with B-Fighter Kabuto, Kagestar, and Robomaru.

>>19584372
Oh crap I forgot about the B-Fighter one.

Anyone know where I can get Exceedraft? I know WeeabooShogun has done at least upto episode 22. But there are torrents only up to episode 13. I found a link to episode 22 but none of the ones in between.
>>
>>19583919
Are you translating with your own knowledge or using some machine translation?
>>
>>19584507
Both, mostly through my own knowledge though.
>>
>>19584538
There is no shame in breaking out a dictionary for words you don't know. Main benefit of scripts is dealing with terrible audio or homophones, though they do sometimes have transcription errors, since they were made decades after the show was.
>>
Man, Akumaizer 3 has ALOT more dialogue than the average Lion-Maru episode.
>>
>>19583919
Are you still making hardsubs with Sony Vegas?
Now would probably be a good time to switch to Aegisub - you're working from a pre-timed script, so re-timing everything seems like a lot of extra effort.
>>
>>19582985
Oh hell yeah! If it's Medaman or Kamitaman I'll lose my shit, but any any of those series would be more than welcome.
>>19583508
>I watch the credits specifically for that crazily aggressive music haha.
This makes me happy.
>>
>>19586166
Damn, already got halfway through the episode without thinking of that.

But if I’m being completely honest, I find my method to be pretty easy all things considered.
>>
>>19586240
I promise you that Aegisub is not hard, and that it will be infinitely more convenient for the toku community if you made softsubbed mkvs and uploaded them to anywhere that isn't YouTube.
>>
>>19586240
Kiyan, please listen to this anon >>19586414, softsubs are infinitely more useful down the line. If a better video source appears, the subs can be slapped straight on or someone can easily use your subs as a basis if they want to tidy up the the translation.
Also, as I inferred in >>19586166, you can just open the JP script in Aegisub, nudge the timing forward or back if necessary, and the bulk of the episode should be right there pre-timed for you (unless, by some quirk, the raw is at a slightly different speed to the video the captions were based on, but I've literally only encountered that once).
>>
>>19580221
I like Faiz, and this indie series feels...dang, I see the Faiz connection...but this feels like it's about an uber-edgy Takumi, with none of the other less edgy characters from that series as a balance.
>>
>>19582405
WeabooShogun expressed interest in subbing detective club shows, but he's yet to finish exceedraft, and Shinkalion Z probably will delay all this into oblivion again.
>>
>>19586484
Also, let's say that - and this might be a stretch, and I doubt it would ever happen to Kiyan - your computer breaks. You lose all of your files. If you wanted to go back and fix something on a previous episode, but you don't have whatever video editing file anymore. Welp, guess we gotta retime the entire episode to fix this mistake.

If you uploaded a softsubbed mkv, then you can just grab the sub file from that and make your edit.

Or, if an actual JP translator comes around and decides thar they want to do the whole series, they can save a lot of time because, as established earlier, timing is the most tedious and time consuming part of subbing.

I appreciate what you're doing, Kiyan, but please. Please softsub.
>>
>>19586484
Though that does depend on the captions, like if they come from a TV re-airing, they may have gaps in them for ad breaks, which your raw doesn't. Though that's fixable with batch re-timing and minor cursing. Only time I've seen speed differences involve PAL sources because PAL speedup shenanigans.
>>
Do they remove episodes of Girl Gun Lady from the Youtube channel after a week? I've been super busy and haven't been able to watch episode 2 and now it's gone. Anyone rip it with subs?
>>
>>19586414
>>19586484
>>19586595
>>19586735
The only problem with any of that is the simple fact that I’ve already put in the work. Probably a dumb move on my part to act so quickly.
>>
>>19587123
>I’ve already put in the work
...on a test episode that's already softsubbed, so no worries - just use aegisub if you start on the untranslated episodes
>>
>>19557423
>>19555488
There's also the Ancient Dogoo Girl (Kodai Shōjo Doguchan), which has some subbed links on Youtube. Watch if you like a midfriff-exposing cavemen girl fighting in a comedic series set in modern times.
>>
>>19587145
OH SHIT RIGHT!

So yeah with that in mind, like I said, I’ll do the first episode of Akumaizer to test the viability of translating straight from JP scripts, & if it works well, I’ll do Barom-1 softsubbed, & then do Akumaizer at a later date.

The only problem left is the fact that another reason I’ve been avoiding softsubs is that then the only convenient means of release would be through torrents, & last time I tried making a torrent, it just absolutely positively WOULD NOT SEED & no force on this or any universe could make it. Because everything I looked told me to click on a setting on my client that just straight-up WASN’T THERE.
>>
>>19587108
Aw shit, I also just had a time to see the 2nd one but it's gone now.

Try asking this account who did the first episode:

>>19587174
Not sure what you might've done there (I've only set up a few myself and it's thankfully always panned out okay), but if you slap the files on Google Drive or MEGA, I'm sure one of us can help you out.
>>19587155
Good shout! I (>>19557423) completely forgot Dogu-chan.
>>
>>19587174
You could just release the .ass files. Those are small enough that you could just throw them onto a mega.

Not to mention that, as a Toei production, it'll get taken down from YouTube most likely. I once uploaded 15 seconds of Robomaru to YouTube, unlisted, and the bots still detected it.
>>
>>19587212
The client I use is BiglyBT, which is a successor to VUZE, & I used VUZE because it was the first Google search result for torrent client.
>>
>>19587223
Wasn’t planning to upload them to YouTube anyway.
>>
>>19587108
So I just tried to download the removed episode with the link that got posted on Twitter and surprisingly I still can get the episode downloaded using y2mate. Sadly, I can't download the captions/subtitles using any Youtube captions downloader sites.

Here's the link if you maybe can try to get the subs:

Wait, so would I need to make new subs for the OP/ED every episode if I use Aegisub?
Because what I did with Lion-Maru is that I would just reuse the OP/ED from the first episode for every episode.

Also, I said that episodes 2, 15, & 16 of Barom-1 don't have scripts available.
But technically neither does episode 1, but episode 1 DOES have a previous fansub to work off of.
So I'd be on my own and have to make the first 2 episodes' subs from scratch.

Also another reason why I've been avoiding Aegisub is pic related.

I HATE THIS INTERFACE.

I HATE THIS INTERFACE SO GODDAMN MUCH.
>>
>>19587347
>Also another reason why I've been avoiding Aegisub is pic related.
Eh, it looks a lot worse than it is. It's pretty intuitive once you get going. Timing becomes pretty straightforward using A and F to scroll through the audio channel (Which is where you'll be paying most of your attention when timing), S to play your selection, D to to play the very end of your selection and G to save the selection and move on to the next line.

No, just paste in the lines and shift the times forward and back if needed (Hit Ctrl+I to quickly open that menu and make sure to hit 'selected rows' rather than 'all rows'
