What actually caused sci-fi to completely fade away from 2D? Everything that isn't based on real life is just fantasy or fantasy isekai now.
The future is now and it sucks.
>>19384934There used to be a shitton of space anime trends just come and go and after LOTR and GoT era fantasy simply became more popular. It won't last forever. There are already many new space series appearing.
Hope for the future died, especially in Japan. Now people just want to escape from their problems
>>19384938>>19384943This is too true and and it hurts.
>>19384943Yes anon that's why space streams and SpaceX progress are the most popular content on youtube. Anime was just flooded by space stuff and people got tired of it. When Mars race starts for real you will see a flood again.
>>19384959Normalfags have ruined space exploration.
>>19384934The Japanese Recession. After the massive collapse, Japan stopped experimenting with long animated epics and stories, especially in regards to the future in sci-fi form. Add in their unhealthy level of overwork that followed and the general feeling that Japanese lose themselves after graduation (hence most characters aging younger than the old 18+ of other, earlier series), and the shift towards escapism via isekai became the norm.Japan needs another economic boom and an overhaul of their black work tendencies, both to encourage a population boom, and to inspire hope for the future.
>>19384963>ruinedFaggot space exploration is in best state in like 40 years. By far. Next 10 years are going to be insane.
>>19385063Optimistic people aren't welcome here.
>>19384934it's a fantasy show
>>19385098No it isn't. It's a sci-fi adventure romance with a heavy focus on fleet formations and combat.
>>19384934Was she meant to look deformed and/or emaciated or is this just a 90s anime character?
>>19384934The scifi market in Japan died off for anime, and because they weren't really giving a shit about the international market where scifi was still a thing, they basically let it fall fallow aside from modern day scifi stuff like the Semi;Colon shows and occasional throwbacks/recurring franchises.
>>19384978Absolutely this, it's amazing how many Japanese just want to kill themselves after highschool because they will "no longer be free"
>>19385098It's one of the few actual sci-fi space shows actually. No space magic and other shit like that.
>>19385124The Ahb are meant to look eternally young and beautiful. It's just the artstyle.

>>19385602Unironically this.

>>19385615Eh. I suppose I am curious if the drop off in Japanese sci-fi happened concurrently with the bubble economy bursting, or if it happened afterward. I know everyone and their brother getting a high budget OVA did.
>>19384959There is literally a hashtag trending right now saying "instead of going to mars we could have _____"

>>19384943>>19384947This is accurate. A lot of the appeal of science fiction was living in an ideal future. Star Trek is the ultimate example of this, and modern Star Trek shows conspicuously avoid showing the bright future that defines Star Trek. When you're trapped in civilizational decline, science fiction can feel very far off, and the idealistic future a child's fantasy. A science fiction show that wanted to resonate today might succeed by taking the perspective of a society already in decline, or focusing on one rebuilding from the ashes. And by rebuilding, I mean Conan style conquering.Oh, and fantasy isekai is popular because it's easy. No need to think about lore building, just slap standard MMO paint on the world and call it done. It's lazy and it deprives fantasy anime of its core appeal, a otherworldly land, but many don't seem to care.
>>19388155>This is accurate. A lot of the appeal of science fiction was living in an ideal future. That's so fucking stupid if that's actually what it was though, I don't consume sci fi so i can go basedjak over "WAOW SUCH A GREAT FUTURE SOCIETY TO LIVE IN" I read and watch this shit to explore the myriad of ways the future could go to shit. Without conflict and problems there is no story. I'm not saying I doubt you, but like look at Blade Runner, that totally illustrated such an idealistic future.Even gundam and many mecha anime depict a world in strife. People in UC are literally living under the NWO and a quarter of the world's population went kaput over the OYW. Code Geass takes place during a future imperial power's conquest of basically the whole world. There's nothing especially grimdark about these but there's nothing ideal about them either, aside from the fact that people use giant robots to kill each other.I'm not really a trekkie so I can't comment too much on the way its universe is depicted but they had their own share of problems. The way you say it though I assume you're saying that the function of society in the federation itself was supposed to be pretty good? Or maybe the tech in the show implies a high QOL for people?
>>19388184>That's so fucking stupid if that's actually what it was thoughWhy? Art always reflects the time it's created in.
>>19388155>>19388184World building is the most important part no matter if it's sci-fi or fantasy. I couldn't care less about the characters and the story if the world itself isn't well written.
>>19388184Gundam always seemed to avoid sci-fi visuals outside of what was strictly necessary for the setting to work, like how in spite of space colonies, ships and robots, the cities just looked like modern ones.Same thing goes for something like Code Geass, where in spite of the sci-fi elements the world is just modern.
>>19388581Sci-fi bullshit appearing concurrently with what is essentially an unchanged modern (for the time) world is a neat aesthetic. Plus if the setting looks like the viewer's it can help it resonate more with them.
>>19388581Code Geass is just the modern world set in a timeline where the French revolution failed and absolute monarchies remained in power in Europe and the American war for independence didn't happen. It isn't even much of a sci-fi until the later parts when the mechs get increasingly stronger.
>>19386527Char, go back to bed.
>>19388591G Gundam. Note that Neo France is still a monarchy
>>19385653Because if you can create technologies that insure that even disabled people can survive in space reliably then it becomes easier for those who aren’t disabled.
>>19388184You actually have just answered OP's question. A lot of people already have been beaten down too much in real lives. Why then should they go home and watch sci-fi about strives and struggles? They could just shut down their brains and watch Iyashikei instead.

>>19388730Musk's MMI shit is over rated. According to a guy I know whose wife they tried to recruit they're mostly talk and are significantly behind in the field. Musk is just good at PR and so reddit thinks he's massively innovating. That said he's got a decent amount of money to burn so he might catch up although I doubt he'll ever take the lead. If/when Facebook goes for MMI's I doubt they'll even look at Musk's shit and will buy up some smaller start up no one has heard of but which actually has accomplishments.

>>19392499 Truthfully, I think it sucks.
It's really disappointing that there's barely any anime scifi that explores beyond the boundaries of regular 21st century human mentality. Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen an anime give things like AGI the gravitas it deserves.
>>19392522Not too far-fetched really. The people who founded the third republic wanted it to be a monarchy, but their negotiations with the royal claimant broke down over the issue of the flag.
>>19384943Sci-fi is doing perfectly fine in other media in Japan.

Given all the older anime that've been getting reboots/remakes, what're the odds we'll see Crest of the Stars come back?
>>19402628Was it even popular back when it aired?
>>19402818It got two seasons of anime adaptation, so I'd assume so.
>>19402826That's not saying much. Many garbage anime got 2-cours with more than one season. I loved Crest of the Stars but I'm not sure if it was especially liked in Japan.
>>19402826It had 3 and some OVAs.Maybe if the series got finished it would've been adapted, but the author's been on hiatus for years now and he was already releasing infrequently.
>>19384934>What actually caused sci-fi to completely fade away from 2D? Everything that isn't based on real life is just fantasy or fantasy isekai now.I don't believe that's true.Sci-fi was rare in the first place, all that changed is that fantasy isekai is extremely cheap and a lazy yet effective way to make money. At worse you could say that Sci-Fi became harder to make. People expect technology to fit what they know and make sense. You can no longer use your Atomic shield set to protect yourself from the commies aliens brainwashing radio.Fantasy however is considered easy mode, some fanboy will even insult you if you ask more consistency. This >>19384978 is also an acceptable answer>>19385126I.G. Should I watch Crest/Banner of the Stars or read the novels? Is the 2012 manga any good either?
>>19406217I liked the anime.I don't know about the novel. All I can tell you about the manga is that this page is playing out the same scenes in an embarrassed/flustered way that didn't happen in the anime. The Ahb are pretty chill about being genetic modification on human, or cat, whatever. But I might be misremembering.
>>19406217I'm currently watching the anime and only have the 2 final OVA's left. I've enjoyed it a lot.
>>19406217Both the anime and the novels are good; been going through the J-Novel Club translations as of late. Anime despite the varying lengths of the entries faithfully captures the tone of the novels and most of the plot points; I was surprised to find how well the 3 volume Crest was adapted into just 13 episodes while the first 2 Banner volumes got at least 10 episodes each. Haven't gotten to the 3rd Banner volume but I imagine there's a lot more skipped here since this only got 2 OVAs.
