The thing with Captain Earth is it had so much it could have done with the setting, yet for some reason they were content to spend literally half the show slowly introducing the Planetary Gears one by one by giving them backstories in their human forms which didn't end up mattering because their personalities changed when they got their memories back.Like, don't get me wrong, I don't mind an excuse to have cool mecha fights on Earth, but they could have just cut to the chase, introduced all these characters as villains in one episode and they would have had significantly more time to develop other aspects on the show instead of spending so much time on characters that amounted to nothing. If they had given them less initial screentime then it would have made more sense when Puck basically kicked them out of the way at the end and revealed himself the true final boss because then it wouldn't have felt like all of that development was for nothing.
>>19332663Yes, this is basically the biggest problem with the show. I also think the romance was very weak. I wish it clarified whether the villains were aliens whose minds were uploaded into human bodies, or just humans who had copies of the aliens memories. I know it's kind of a ship of Theseus situation, but it seems weird that one of them is a hero who doesn't seem particularly bothered by at least having memories of being a immortal space vampire who genocided countless alien planets. You'd think someone would be concerned about working with him or he would feel guilty about it or something. Kind of a big think to sweep under the rug, especially if they are supposed to be the same entities as the original aliens.
>>19332663I'd written this show off, but it looks like it has booba. I will now watch, thank you.

>>19332663It was a thoroughly standard mecha show, with some cool robots and fun moment. Definitely flawed but you can't expect every show to be worth it. Captain Earth is exactly what I expect and want from bones and I love them for it.
>>19334671Certainly it's true that not every show is going to be great, it's just that this one went so far as to confidently state in its own logo that it was going to offer an unforgettable experience so it's not surprising that people are unhappy that it was a disappointment in that regard.
>>19332663It's good SRW bait at least
>>19334671There's a lot of "standard mecha show" to it, but I think the stubborn postivity sets it somewhat apart. A lot of shows would have pretty downbeat elements and Captain Earth seems like it's going for that a bunch of times only for the cast (especially the main character) to just kind of... disagree. Usually without fanfare or much drama, just "yeah, I broke that enslavement broadcast tower because I said I'd show you my boomerang". There's a lot of things the show fumbled, but I really liked that element and I don't think I've seen its like except maybe in Planet With.
>>19334681The moment the eyecatch told you "EVERYTHING WILL BE OBVIOUS SOON" should've been the second red flag.
I realized that they never resolved the thing about that one guy getting his mind overwritten by puck. They defeated the main puck but the puck'd guy is still around, unless he magically became braindead after the original died.
>>19336254I thought that was a great eyecatch, if the show was better that line probably would have become a classic /m/ quote.
>>19334681Isn't that quote taken from a book?
>>19336275No, but "Let justice be done though the heavens fall" is, along with 90% of the episode titles in that show.
>>19336260Yes, the show basically forgot its own main villain was still around. I remember bringing this up when it first aired, but just like now the only thing people have to say about the show is "I want to fuck the brown girl" or "The robots were cool".

>>19333745oh c'mon, this is /m/ we watch our shit ALL the way.
>>19332663It could have been better, but it was a solid enough show that was entertaining and finally gave me a brown skinned heroine who gets the conventionally attractive MC so based on that its one of my bias favorites.
>>19336837>but just like now the only thing people have to say about the show is "I want to fuck the brown girl" or "The robots were cool".I will add that I appreciate the character development of the main cast throughout the show. I distinctly remember a point in the show where one of the planetary gears confesses that he killed the MCs father, and the MC cooly states that he already knew. I recall respecting the show for that moment because in any other mech anime they would have played such a scene for all the dramatic tension they could wring from it, but here they allowed the MC to portray a level of maturity and levelheadedness not often seen in the genre. Its not much, but it lets you know there were competent heads in charge of the show even if all we got in the end was mediocre.

>>19338259Lappa was feminine in design and color, it'd make more sense if Pitz was male. On the other hand they could be intersexual like amphibians.

Captain Earth was the definition of a Bones anime.

However you have to consider that Concrete Revolutio is the definition of a "hard mode" anime. You have to be ridiculously smart in order to correctly follow everything that's going on in there. It makes G-Reco look like a cave painting.
Captain Earth also had some highly aesthetic Blu-ray covers.

>>19334740>>19359024Yeah, I like the characters reacting like actual humans instead of forcing in some overblown melodrama. It just needed to be in a better show. Makes me want to check out more stuff by the writer and/or director and see if they ever made something where they got it right.

>>19480372Oh shit! Uh... Nippur.
>>19484364>Why do you suppose this is such a consistent problem with mecha anime in particular?well, if it is like US cartoons, the staff don't really want to work on the show. American Animators don't want to make sci fi or fantasy shows like the way people working on tv shows did in the 70s and 80s. Kids that grew up with comics and scifi/fantasy int he 50s and 60s really wanted to tell those stories. They were just happy to get the jobs. Transformers is a good example. Most of the original G1 transformers is written by people that wanted to write super hero comics or star trek / star wars stuff. They were happy to get the job and wanted to write that sort of stuff. Its why so many of the doomsday devices and world domination schemes of megatron were a lot like 50s and 60s comics. Now, you got a lot of nerds that grew up with Utena, sailor moon, who wrote really creepy fan fics in high school about the Eds fucking harry potter. Thats what they really want to make and thats how we've gotten weird shit like steven universe and adventure time. They want to make generic adventure romance anime thats just a hair mysterious. They don't want to make thundercats. IF japan is like that, these guys don't want to give us traditional happy well thought out mecha anime endings. They really wish they were working on another show. So they just force in some bullshit ending. One that either they dont care about, one that they know will piss the fans off because they hate their fans for making them work on such a show, or force in the ending from the show they wish they were making. Given that Franxx's strongest episode was the flash back ep where 002 and hero and escapring together and that the klax are gencided, the big bad is not really defeated, and 002 and hero die out in space, I'm going to take a wild guess that the staff wished they were making dark shit like Grave of the Fireflies. You fall in love with the kids, then they die horribly.
>>19486909Hm... it's kind of ironic isn't it, because Trigger was supposed to be a studio with a lot more freedom than your average anime studio, full of people making the shows they actually wanted to make. And I think Kill la Kill was one such show, it really felt like they were having a great time making that show. But Franxx, I have no idea what happened to them that they ended up making it. Perhaps as they gained more success they also gained less freedom.

If the show was intended to sell toys, someone higher up would have came in and told them to fuck off with the sad shitty ending.Thats one reason you'll probably never see the MC of Gundam or Macross die at the end. The IP owners want to sell toys and model kits. If Franx was something like Gundam Unicorn, The nines would have stilled died, and the show would have ended with hiro and 002 on a sunny grassy hilltop, holding each other and looking off in the distance.
>>19487621>Trigger didn't make Franx. It was A1 Pictures, the SAO people. That explains why it was better than KlK, the Witch ovas, Luluco, and the lackluster Gridman sequel.
>>19482647They smashed episode 15 and the final act together. It's way better just by ending on Franxx's high point, a lil' rushed but it's fine, especially when the manga wasn't meant to go that far.
>>19488863>Thats one reason you'll probably never see the MC of Gundam or Macross die at the end. The IP owners want to sell toys and model kits.CCA literally ends with Amuro dying.
>>19488951>CCA literally ends with Amuro dyingyes. 8 years after the end of the show. In a movie. Luke dies too, 20 or 30 years after milking the original star wars for merch money.
>>19488941the manga is better
>>19488962That's what I said, yes.
>>19488941>They smashed episode 15 and the final act together.>It's way better just by ending on Franxx's high point, a lil' rushed but it's fine, especially when the manga wasn't meant to go that far.Just read it. It was a lot better. I would have rather the klax been saved and the princess merge with 002 to make 002 complete, but I guess this series was hell bent on some sort of grim or sad ending. At least the Manga ends with Hiro/002 surviving to be happy together and maybe have klax children.
any news on franxx getting into a srw? The klaxx and aliens are perfect for those sorts of games
>>19488958How about the fact that Zeta ended with Kamille rendered a vegetable and Fa crying about it? And that was literally the second Gundam ever. That's not exactly a happy ending for a toy show.

>>19490542>gameideasalmost had me. man, I wish that game was real.
>>19337823I agree with you about the characters being great, their interactions were entertaining and the performance by the voice actors were really on point, portraying their feelings in a great light. What it bothers me the most is that it feels that the plot was rushed in the last few episodes, a common trend in series made by Bones sadly, also the ending although it was okay, it makes me wish for more closure and a less ambiguous finale, but then again it just my opinion.
>>19492303I like ambiguous endings but it didn't really feel like it had earned it. I wish they'd learn to stop meandering but maybe we're in the minority and people enjoy that kind of thing because they keep doing it and they're still kicking.
>>19493566Hm. That seems like a lot of work for a studio like Bones.
>>19493946It's too bad, really. They put in all that effort for nothing.
>>19488966>>19489008Cute
>>19489008I watched one episode of this back when it started and I thought "Nah" but when the pink girl introduced herself as Zero Two I thought "Well surely she's going to be given a real name at some point, this screams temporary name." Are you telling me they seriously never stop calling her the name of the best Kirby boss throughout the entire series?
>>19495467Well, it wasn't entirely for nothing. I still watched it.
>>19497566I'd watch a spinoff about the mystery girl.
>>19500277Come and check out some of Bones newer shows. You may find what you're looking for.
>>19500277Pitz was mystery girl

>>19479234 Maybe you were just on the cusp of puberty.
>>19493566I never thought she was that bad.
>>19332663This show had it's ups and downs and largely suffered from some really bad pacing, but heck if I didn't enjoy it for moments like these that were littered throughout it. If we were rating purely on enjoyment, I'd say I had liked it more than Aldnoah, especially since Aldnoah had to take itself so seriously all the time. andthisendingisactuallyhappy
>>19501137I feel like if we marathon watched it, it would seem a lot better. Waiting week for week made it seem even slower paced than it was. It could have been a really good show, but the pacing did kill it quite a bit.
>>19332663I have come here to laugh at Captain Earth.
>>19507575 Then she flipped out, grabbed his gun and shot him.

>>19510124Actually, it's a very good anime.

>>19512574Most of it's bad.
>>19512604Why did you type that?
>>19332663I honestly struggled to start it but once I got past the first few episodes I really enjoyed it. I'd watch again.
