It's one of my favorite anime for sure but I seem to be in the minority in thinking it's good. My only real issue with it is its 14th episode being a 90 minute info dump.

>>19070096
yep

>My only real issue with it is its 14th episode being a 90 minute info dump.
The sheer audacity of doing that just makes me laugh.
Imagine buying that one episode on LD in the 90's. What a treat.

I remember binging Key one late night a few years ago.
15 episodes? That's about 5~6 hours, I'll be in bed by 03:00~04:00. All's well and fine until episode 14. These two dudes just sit there talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking. I couldn't believe how slow it felt. Like I was listening for ages. And I was getting progressively more sleepy, probably because of the monotomy. Eventually I checked the time, and realised I was about 60 minutes into the "20 minute" episode. But until that realization it just felt like going crazy, experiencing sleepiness induced time dilation or some shit. Definitely made sure I'll never forget Key.

It is a really good show, for the most part. Especially the first 13 episodes. It was a top 10 anime for me up to that point. Unfortunately the penultimate episode is one of the worst directed episodes in anime history. Its 2 guys sitting on a bench for 90 minutes explaining the entire backstory of the show. The final episode is decent enough, but the damage is done. Its doesn't bring it down to a shit show overall, but that penultimate episode severely damages it.
>>
I'm quite a fan of Key; I liked it quite a lot. I especially love the character designs, which are from the same guy who did them for Xenogears, Xenosaga Episode I and Xenoblade X. I think Key is his only anime. Really good dub too. Awesome music. Alas, as I posted above, that second to last episode is really bad though.
>>
Wow, I didn't know this series was so hated. I saw it last month and thought it was actually entertaining and had a quasi-unique premise. It seems to be another OVA that suffered from a sudden budget cut that led to those two final "episodes" that slammed all that exposition into your head. I dunno, I liked most of the characters and how it showed the ugly side of being an idol. That prodigy producer character was great.

Also want to add that Key looks incredibly cute when she isn't "muh autistic rei girl" mode.

>>19074006
to be fair this is a crowd where the revelation that she's not really a robot might be a deal breaker
>>
>>19074013

yeah but there's plenty of /m/ related shit in it for the most part, I think. Besides, almost everyone else is either a robot or wants to BE a fucking robot.

He did the original manga for Ruin Explorers. He also did the manga and character designs for the manga/OVA/video game franchise Ichigeki Sacchuu!! Hoihoi-san.

>>19074009
Its more Rei pulling a Key, since Key predates Eva.
>>
>>19064502
you got no one but yourself to blame there anon
>>
>>19074539
Did anybody on the NGE staff even watch Key?
>>
>>19074006
That's not really a budget issue, it's just fucking poor pacing. They could have slowly revealed this stuff throughout the OVA, but instead the OVA is mostly about a girl walking around and being expressionless like some low rent Lain knockoff.
>>
>>19074658
>the OVA is mostly about a girl walking around and being expressionless like some low rent Lain knockoff
It should have stayed that way.
Key cute.
>>
>>19074658
Key had the same issue that something like Game of Thrones, The X-Files, LOST, etc... all had. It did a great job building up its mysteries. The mystery basically was the show. When it came time to actually answer things, they had no idea how to do it organically, and there was so much of it that they made that disaster of a second to last episode where they practically narrated it to us.

Also, Key predates Lain.
>>
>>19074840
Mysteries are great precisely because they're mysteries. There is no such things as a good resolved mystery. People that understand this like Lynch and The Big O guy tend to get flack from brainlets.

But you do acknowledge that autismo robot Key is cuter, right?
>>
>>19074860
>There is no such things as a good resolved mystery
equally brainlet take. that only works with mysteries that are large enough in scale to have a lot of room for speculation. Never revealing who a serial killer is doesn't work because your discussion is only going to boil down to "well I think it's this guy" and that's it. A mystery that is resolved is a work that had the details that it planted throughout the story add up to something meaningful. There is a cleverness in making that happen in and of itself.
>>
>>19076946
the proper word in this instance is probably 'suspense'

No, not really, although you could try to go through it at 1.5 speed.

This picture totally makes me think of Key being the type who would answer the phone for an obvious scam call and be on the phone with them for an hour giving up all her personal details.

It's inspired by the 90's genre New Jack Swing. "In the Night" has more japanese-esque chord progressions and fretless bass, but it is inspired by stuff in that genre and general electronic music. I'll link a couple examples that might be considered New Jack Swing.

I must've mixed the old Korean love ballads my parents listened to with the 90's/early 00's music my older cousins listened to. I already knew Bobby Brown but now I have a clear idea of what to search for.
