What I wonder is why Neo Germany's Gundam is a ninja and not something like a tank, a soldier, a small car or a Nether Gundam with custom mill blades to be extra "offensive". If a country deserved the weeaboo Gundam it should have been Neo Italy, with all the /m/ shows that were dubbed and aired there in the 80's.

>>

I kind of doubt the movie was immediately translated for Dutch audiences.
>>
>>19032062
Y'know what, considering how kanji/CJK characters work in terms of carrying meaning/readings, I'd not be surprised to find out Japan's naming conventions for fictional characters can be summed up as "oops, all Darth Vaders!"
>>
>>19035278

In Dutch "Dark" is "Donker", and while "father" is “Vader", it’s pronounced very, very differently; the word for “father” in Dutch, while spelled V-a-d-e-r, is pronounced in a way that roughly rhymes with English “father”. It’s not Vay-der, it’s Vaah-der.
>>
>>19032062
All I know is he had the coolest gundam in the series.
>>
>>19035651
The reality is Lucas chose "Vader" because it sounded somewhat sinister thanks to evoking "invader." He didn't have Anakin down as Darth Vader until the second draft of TESB's screenplay.
>>
>>19036249
He followed this pattern with all the Sith Lords he named, too. Darth Maul, Darth Sidious, Darth Icky, Darth Insanius. I always thought the name Palpatine reminded me of the word palpitation, and you have to admit palpitations are pretty scary.

The name was a clue for the audience but it was a coincidence in universe. There was a real Schwarz Bruder that died and Kyoji hijacked his corpse with DG cells to make a clone of himself to help Domon. The Gundam and costume and the German Ninjutsu skills are all his, Kyoji wasn't a ninja. Also he looked like Master Asia apparently.

Was it? I was always under the assumption that Kyoji was actually secretly a martial artist all along.

>>
>>19032062

>>
>>19042181
I imagine they were the skills of the Neo Germany mobile fighter who got assimilated, whatever was left of him was made into the Kyoji DG cell clone. After all, none of the Neo Germany officials were suspicious and thought he had suddenly changed.
>>
>>19042181
It's specifically "German" ninjutsu, not regular ninjutsu. I would assume the German guy is the one who knows it. And it goes with the outfit and the Gundam, both of which he already had.
>>
>>19042167
>“The team threw a Hail Mary to George, saying the game would have more credibility if the apprentice had a ‘Darth’ title,” a Force Unleashed team member says. Lucas agreed that this situation made sense for Sith royalty, and offered up two Darth titles for the team to choose from. “He threw out ‘Darth Icky’ and ‘Darth Insanius.’ There was a pregnant pause in the room after that. People waiting for George to say ‘just kidding,’ but it never comes, and he just moved on to another point.”
>Team members involved in the decision to not use these ridiculous Darth titles could not be reached for comment, but three LucasArts employees believe an excuse was made to push the Darth title to the sequel. By the time development on that title commenced, the names were long forgotten by Lucas and weren’t muttered by the development team again. Starkiller remained Starkiller in the games, but was also named Galen Marek in the greater Expanded Universe fiction.
>>
>>19034647
Same deal in Cyber Formula.
>>
>>19042470
Although reading this, it's clear that Lucas actually believed Darth Insanius to be a cool name and only suggested Darth Icky to offer the illusion of choice so they'd have to pick Insanius. Then again, it is a spoken word conversation so he could have intended it to be spelled Darth Ikki in which case it would be slightly less weird.
>>
>>19032062
Probably because the actual twist is so bugfuck insane that nobody could actually see it coming.
>"You know that mysterious mentor character that's heavily implied to be the MC's big brother?"
>"Well, he's actually a cyborg clone of the MC's brother made using the corpse of a German ninja and nanomachines."
That's the type of shit that if it was in other series would be considered jumping the shark, but cause this is G Gundam we can just take it at face value and carry on.
>>
>>19042974
Well that's weird.
>>
>>19045223

What a fucking lad. George out there dominating game devs with his freaky mind games.
>>
>>19046415
I like the other story too.

>When Fracture was revealed to the public, its protagonist was a character named Mason Briggs. By the time the game launched, his name was changed to Jet Brody. A person who helped give this gun-toting rebel his original name recalls going through weeks of naming conventions. “Literally, whole teams sitting together, brainstorming what looks good – the first name, the last name, etc. Done, good to go.”
>But then a phantom menace struck. George Lucas would periodically check in on the status of the games his company was making, lending creative input and advice. The developer I talked to sighs, and agitatedly says, “In one viewing of Fracture, [Lucas] said it looked really good, but he didn’t like [Mason Briggs’] name. We’re like, ‘What do you mean, George?’ He responded to the effect of, ‘It doesn’t really fit. When he jumps on stuff, he moves pretty fast. I like B.J. Dart.’
>“So everybody’s like, ‘No, he’s gotta be f---ing with us.’ He’s absolutely not. So when something like that happened – in the middle of the campaign, mind you – we have to go back through that entire naming convention again… from scratch.” From that second session, Jet Brody was born. Coincidentally. Jett is the name of Lucas’ son.

Or a cooperation between TAKRAF and Rheinmetall.
TAKRAF is used to build the largest mining equipment in the world with up to 14,2 kt of weight and Rheinmetall builds tanks, weapons systems, weapons and car parts.
If two german companies could build a giant robot (or other sbsurdly large land based weapons system) it's them.
>>
>>19034644
The japanese language got influenced significantly by german in some areas.
Back in the day, they did some things with prussia.
This lead to the japanese adopting many german words in science, medicine and military.
A neat side effect is that most japanese marches are very influenced by german marches, not as much as Chile "we're larping as Prussia in the 21st century", but they sound very simmilar
>>19041091
The german language is a little more sophisticated than english.
So for a native speaker of german, there aren't realy any new concepts in the english language, however for a native english speake the concept of a grammatical gender that may or may not differ from the actual gender is allready alien.
And there are more elements of the german laguage that may confuse non-native speakers.
For example "das Gleiche" and "das Selbe" have a slightly different meaning, but both translate as "the same".
However "das Selbe" means the exact same while "das Gleiche" means something is identical, yet not the exact same.
Two cars can be "gleiche", however the can not be "selbe".
Or honorary forms that exist in german, but not in english.
>>
>>19068620
In addition to that, the word for "german" in japanese is sounding rather simmilar to the german word for german, wich is deutsch.
Sounds something like doitsu or so.

Also some streets in Düsseldorf look pretty japanese because Düsseldorf has the largest cluster of japanese people outside of japan.

Ahhh. A thread about G Gundam names. I get to revive a favorite but of trivia for all the newfags who have never heard it before.

Like a lot of shows G Gundam got localized to broadcast in the Philippines, with a Tagalog dub that did its best to work with the character names. Now, you have to understand that it was very common at the time for the dubbing teams to just wholesale change Japanese names to something western in order for both ease of the dialog and so local fans would ostensibly have an easier time of things, regardless of what it did to the characters or their origins. Yu Yu Hakusho for instance, Yuusuke became Eugene, Hiei became Vincent, etc. So when G was announced we all expected some kind of nonsense.

But nothing could prepare us for what we got. I still struggle to understand what happened.

Domon was mercifully left as Domon. Same with Rain. I think those were oddly Western enough that the dub teams could deal with them, but that logic doesn't hold much water when you see what the did to the rest of the cast.

George (GEORGE) became Jorack. I have no fucking clue.

Chibodee remained Chibodee but the pronunciation was never quite the same depending on who was saying it.

Sai Saici became Disensia. I don't have any idea. Maybe they were going by a different reading of his name in the Chinese subs? I feel like so much of this was due to a chain of bad translations from Japanese into Cantonese into Tagalog.

Argo became Algo. Close enough, and they really couldn't fuck it up.

Our thread topic Schwartz Bruder became TUBARTZ Bruder. No one knows what a Tubartz is. How they fucked up Schwartz confounds me to this day.

But the best was Tohou Fuhai. They couldn't leave it at Tohou Fuhai. The called him Master Asia, sure, because that was already English and they could roll with that. But Tohou Fuhai? He became ORIENTAL INVINCIBLE. Many, many times in the show Domon would angrily growl out his full title, "Oriental Invincible Master Asia!"
>>
>>19109583

Oriental Invincible sounds cool, honestly.

>God Gundam instead of Kami Gundam

Master Asia was a fool to eliminate humans using a machine bigger than Big Zam and Dr. Mikamura was a bigger fool for offering his daughter like a bargaining chip to pilot such a monstrosity. A woman's duty is to the home and pump out pilots for the glory of Earth. It's a miracle that dimwit Domon managed to save the world after killing his own master and brother, and attempted to harm the woman who can bear fruit.

I can't figure out what you intended to say here.

The cast of G Gundam are all delinquents at best or average joes with no interest in politics. They're prized fighters who formed bonds and their own social circle thru fighting. The main antagonist isn't even the Devil Gundam but rather the politicians trying to create a monster and a weapon only to be done in by their own twisted ambitions.

Domon Kasshu is only the winner if only because he learns to use might correctly and does not play the role of Strongman to weak colonies. Note how he's the only pilot not born to be a new type or some brat with Political connections. He's just a normal boy who became a man!

> The cast of G Gundam are all delinquents at best or average joes with no interest in politics.

George is a nobleman, which is in no way an "average Joe". None of them are really, since their skills make them far from average.

> The main antagonist isn't even the Devil Gundam but rather the politicians trying to create a monster

If that was true then the Devil Gundam wouldn't have used everyone that tried to use it, and Ulube or someone would have been the final antagonist.

> Note how he's the only pilot not born to be a new type or some brat with Political connections. He's just a normal boy who became a man!

Heero, Garrod and Loran were neither Newtypes or Newtype analogues or politically connected either. It was the trend in the 90s for those early AU shows.

That reminds me, I remember when I was a kid I used to think Chibodee was the French guy and George was the American guy, because why would an American be named Chibodee?
>>
>>19120610
I don't like George de Sand. He's course and rough and irritating and he gets everywhere.

Master Gundam isn't Japanese
>>
>>19126539
Good point, but Master Gundam still isn't the correct name. I'm not sure what would be though.
>>
>>19126535

He wasn't.
>>
>>19126672
He literally assumed the name of a politician.
>>
>>19126688
I can call myself George Washington it doesn't make me connected to shit
>>
>>19126693
Wouldn't it be easier to just admit you haven't watched Wing instead of trying to act cute like this?
>>
>>19126697
please explain the real and direct connection he had
>>
>>19126693

You say "assumed" as if he took on the politician's identity too, or even did it by choice. It was a code name given to him by others, and had no actual benefits of or from the original person who had that name.
>>
>>19126572
It's literally Master Asia's Gundam
>>
>>19127030
So is Kowloon Gundam but his name isn't Master Kowloon.
>>
>>19127769

Kowloon Gundam is a disguise for his real unit though, so of course it doesn't use his real name. It probably uses his birth place instead.
>>
>>19127784
>using his real birth place as a disguise
Was Master Asia kind of dumb?
>>
>>19127789

He's not hiding the fact he has a suit or anything, so using names tied to himself doesn't expose anything. He was just hiding that it wasn't the real suit.
>>
>>19127789
>>19127845
Kowloon Gundam was the one he used in the 12th Gundam Fight. He was pretending he was just using the same Gundam a second time in a row, which wasn't unusual: Chapman used the same Gundam three times and only updated it after he'd lost.

Pretty sure it wasn't that popular in Japan at first. Look how long Sunrise dragged their ass at releasing the blu-ray.
>>
>>19109583
By any chance did G Gundam get one of those amazingly bad Filipino English dubs like ZZ did?
>>
>>19157556
afaik no, just a North American dub with Domon by a guy so powerful he dropped voice acting to become a dentist
WITH THE HELP OF KIYOJIIIIII
but yeah some manner of Speedy / Daimos dub would be pretty great probably
