>>18691868Why did Kaiju stuff never really kick off outside of movies?
>>18691868one thing I always loved about Zoanoids is not a single one of them seems able to resist bragging about his abilities. they are all real proud of that shit before Sho or Agito rips them a couple new assholes.
>>18695383That's a good question. I can't really think of much they could be used for, though. Kaiju intrinsically have a lot of influence over people, and can be used to create factions, cults and sects, but the monsters themselves don't really do all that much. Normally, their powers, histories, and human representatives are what make the monsters interesting. They are typically too large to interact with individuals (outside of telepathy) and inherently dangerous to human structures, furthering the difficulty of human/monster communication. That typically results in monster fights being the sole selling point of a series, which can bore many audiences quite easily. Case and point: Pacific Rim. Furthermore, CGI ain't cheap, even today. It's hard to make decent sales on a series featuring Kaiju that have the same level of detail as Supergirl's or The Flash's Computer Graphics, which is typically the budget for TV series that are just starting off. It's not impossible, but very difficult to do, especially outside of Japan, where, unlike most of the world, Kaiju are usually trending. I guarantee that I failed to consider other details. Let me know what you guys think.

>>18693545What is Iris?
>>18708664I think the lore on Iris is that it(she?) was the first attempt by Atlantis to create a weapon capable of killing the Gyaos, giant space bats that shoot sonic cutting beams and eat everything. They used Gyaos DNA as a base, which led to Iris going berserk and being sealed away. They then proceeded to make Guardian Monster v.2, aka Gamera.
>>18709108Is it? I thought the movie theory was that Iris was made to counter Gamera and keep it from going out of control?
>>18709368There was an official Manga adaptation that explained the backstory.
Zeiram was one of those creatures that managed to be cool and creepy at the same time.
>>18698757>>18698758Xam'd was a fun show but the aesthetics and monster designs always had me wondering if Bones just had some unused Eureka Seven stuff laying around and just said "Eh. Let's use this".
>>18708676Sorewatase from Fresh Pretty Cure?
>>18691868You might like this Kaiju No. 8.
>>18709436Then why did Iris hate Gamera so much?
>>18738963Bear in mind that this is just me talking without basis, but it seems that Iris had some kind of connection with the girl that raised her. That's why Iris tried absorbing her at the end of the movie. The girl hated Gamera for causing the deaths of her loved ones. It is likely that Iris got that hatred from her.
>>18747944iris was just using the girl to evolve. it was an ancient organism like the gyaos so it seems like its instinc is to fight gamera
Bump for more monsters.
The only good monster is a dead monster.
>>18691868>>18691940My favorite Zoanoids were pic related Panadyne and Enzyme 1.
>>18704349I really liked that Sea Monster. The face could be better but otherwise.
>>18742283I can't believe they got away with this even by "censoring" it for the American market
>>18709454In my headcanon, Zeiram was some crazy lost prototype of the Advents from the Guyver mythos that just kind of wandered around space for centuries. Shit maybe I'll give that a rewatch, it's not that long.
I've seen Godzilla '54, Mothra vs. Godzilla, Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster, Invasion of Astro Monster, The Return of Godzilla, Godzilla '98, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. I want to get more into the kaiju film genre more broadly and check out some good giant monster comics/manga.Any recommendations?

>>18747944It seemed like her hatred of Gamera is what woke him up, and he was feeding specifically on that hate.

>>18696526Not him, but I think you're pretty spot-on. Kaiju, like mecha, are in a sort of niche of being very awkward for normies as well, though if the big-shot hollywood monster movies of late are anything to go by they definitely have more gas in them than giant robots. However, all of it is nostalgia properties and reboots, so go figure. Kaiju also have the shared distinction with robots of being jobbers in other media, if they show up in any other property they're there to look scary and lose to the heroes.
There was that time Keroro and co became dragons.
>>18722384whats varan doing
>>18818876Looks cool but what the hell is it
I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but I've been trying to look for an anime movie from the 80's. It featured a lot of sci-fi mumbo jumbo involving another dimension, and two military officers get absorbed into two kaiju, and one of them is red and silver. That's all I remember about it!
>>18834703Hagane no Oni
>>18840590>Hagane no Onithanks!
>>18810320>if the big-shot hollywood monster movies of late are anything to go by they definitely have more gas in them than giant robotsBut haven't most modern American giant monster movies been mostly running on fumes? Legendary Pictures' Monsterverse has been faltering since it began and the fate of its latest installment is up in the air. King of the Monsters would have been a disastrous bomb without China, which seems to be the only international market where people still went out to watch Hollywood giant monster movies in droves, at least before the pandemic. As for giant robots, people may have hated the Bayformers films but they were reliably successful for a decade straight before those too lost steam.Anyway, I still agree with what you and >>18696526 are saying. Giant monsters are a niche that have difficulty connecting to and gaining traction with bigger audiences and this is one reason they haven't taken off that strongly in other media. They rely heavily on nostalgia, but people who have grown up on old giant monster movies and still care for them as adults are a terribly small base, especially on an international level.
>>18785944Well you still got a bunch of great movies to watch so get that done at one point and you'll be a champ in my eyes. Some of the godzilla mangas do look very cool tho, suppose they are worth checking out.

>>18691868You are allow to say they are cool, but they aren't /m/.
Speaking of kaiju in manga and anime form, what's everyone's thoughts on the new manga Kaiju No 8?
>>18892645I'm really enjoying it. It started off pretty original though I'm at chapter 7 and it seems to have become a little more derivative, with the testing of students and everything, but the MC at least is different than the sort you usually get in shonens and the monster designs are very good. Overall I'm enjoying it.
Bump for monsters.
>>18834230Zouragi from Boogiepop and Others, it's ambiguous whether it's a kaiju spawn from a child's imagination or the avatar of ultimate destruction, and it's described as having two sets of arms and legs so the design is largely imagined by the anime
