I keep falling for women I talk to online. Not in love, but just enough to care about them as if they were in my life for real. I don't feel bad about it because they're usually just as lonely as I am. Almost like I have someone to go home to. In a way I do. Like something to look forward to when I get home besides a drab, echoing apartment that is just nothing but silence. Unloving, cold, heavy silence.

Other than my loneliness, I'm starved for conversation. And I'm not talking about any of that water cooler bullshit that happens at work. I'm talking about real, interested, engaging conversation. The kind that exposes and connects you to people. There's nothing else to do other than talk to each other most of the time. It's sobering, really. We watch movies, play games, watch each other nut, but none of it comes before conversation. Like, a good conversation. Where you understand her and her you. Sometimes young men complain about how there is nothing left to discover in this world. But I would say to them that there is nothing more exciting left to discover than the intricacies of her life. Her wild plains, her canyons, her vast oceans. She is all more beautiful and surprising to me than all of the green outside my windows. And yet she and her life are intangible and are as temporary to me as every bit of nature. And when she inevitably finds her own way, I'll find my way on to the next one and the next one and the next one.

Why do I have this habit of sharing intimate thoughts in these threads? It has something of a religious ritual. WHO are you anyway. Pffft

Often times I regret caring too much about someone. You only have so much time on this earth and you're unlikely to actually like all of those at once. Kierkegaard, Schelling, and the neoplatonists are a matter of taste, not for understanding the western canon.

And it must be mentioned - Spinoza.
Philosophers from completely all sides of philosophy appreciate him. Bertrand Russel and Nietzsche both sang his praises. There are contemporary works of Neuroscience referring to Spinoza. He is a hidden gem in the field.
Schopenhauer, like Spinoza, is a wonderful philosophy that should be approached as an experience of its own but not as a necessary step of a curriculum. Sort of the same for Leibniz.

As for Husserl/Heidegger... The latter is a close student of the former who more or less supplants him, people like to study Husserl but it's not an essential point. But you shouldn't worry either. Heidegger's philosophy in particular is one you want a long experience of history of philosophy for. And it's pretty annoying to read.

But if I were tutoring a future king, personally... Heraclitus, Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Descartes, Spinoza, Hume, Kant, Hegel, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, William James.

Only in accepting the past can we live in the present and face the future.

Thanks. Feels a bit easier now. I sometimes bring up clouds in private conversations while we're on a subject of weather, but people don't seem to have much interest.
