Why not a science fiction fantasy related image?
What’s some fantasy that has realistic economic systems and autistic detail about political systems that isn’t GRRM?
>>18171246Jericho was awful, but Undying was a masterpiece. I played that game before I read any of his books, so I went and read his books expecting something like Undying.. I think that was one of the worst cases of hoodwinking I've ever experienced.
>TFW no fantasy novels with strong female warrior antagonist who would dom you in bed. Why are western fantasy novels so shit compared to eastern Fantasy novels?
>>18171283>Jericho was awfulI guess I really am the only one who liked it. Liked the characters and the premise of the team against paranormal threats even if it isn't particularly unique, but maybe it's mostly nostalgia since I played it a long time ago.
>>18171261Baru CormorantThere is more sci-fi that has that than fantasy though.
>>18171360I did like the setting and the premise. I think it just had the misfortune of being made during the console shooter boom. Did you find if any of his books were like Jericho, even if it wasn't a direct adaption of any of them?
>>18171379>Did you find if any of his books were like Jericho, even if it wasn't a direct adaption of any of them?Nope, I admit I didn't look too hard either, but it's mostly reminiscent of wh40k Inquisitorial stuff (which I enjoy) but nothing where it's more rooted in the "contemporary world", not sure how to describe it but I guess Jericho is urban fantasy? I've read some Inquisition supplements and wiki entries for Vampire the Masquerade too and it somewhat helped me scratch that itch.
Finally finished Shadow Rising and now onto the Fires of Heaven. All I have to say that the ending for book 4 surprised me
>>18171379Shit, I just now realized I misunderstood your question sorry, but I just didn't look to much into him because the rest of his stuff didn't look too appealing to me, he's sort of a Stephen King I think
Is World of Cultivation any good?
Is there any good story about vampires that came out in the last 20 years? Everywhere I look it's just female romance shit.
>>18171619Probably? I haven't read it but it has good reviews.Personally I just check here https://www.novelupdates.com/series-ranking/?rank=popular&org=495&rl=0And work my way down from what seems interesting. Some can be entertaining despite not being less than 4* (I'll recommend Against the Gods to everyone just for the current arc).
>>18171724blindsight and echopraxia ;)
>>18171742Against the Gods is pretty great, BUT I would recommend anyone looking to start a webnovel to only read those that are Completed. Nothing is more frustrating than getting invested into a world and storyline only for there to be no conclusion.Warlock of the Magus World is one I would highly recommend. AND it is completed.

>>18171240Yo, I asked this in its own thread, but since this is more active: do you guys know of any maybe lesser-known fantasy with unique, interesting settings? Something less derivative.

Need help with suggestions. I feel like I've read all the most popular series and can't find anything to hook me anymore. I just don't feel anything with that oomph that makes you keep readingWhat I enjoyed: stormlight, WoT, realm of elderlings, kingkiller, books of babel, that one series with the guy who calls wolf's or something about drum beats and fire princess that gets a burned face, lightbringer, cradle, a song of fire and iceWhat I dropped: riyria, king of thorns (dropped after 2nd book), first law (dropped after second book), codex alexia (after like 3rd book), Thomas covenant (halfway through book one, not sure if I want to continue), malazan (dropped after book 3, I honestly want to continue reading, but I've forgotten so much but still remember most the main events so it'll be a torture rereading it while knowing what's going to happen)
>>18173151the most prescient, methinks
>>18177098Well I suppose I enjoy character driven stories, similar to my enjoy list I guess? I also liked the enders saga, read them all except the side stories of bean. Emotional Rollercoaster are nice too, if a book can make me cry manly tears that's a plus.
>>18177086Powder mageFire and swordTractors blade A cavern of black ice Psalms of isaakHerald of the stormChild of fire The devil you know by mike Carey
>>18177128I've seen powder mage recommended a lot, but people said the third book is weak, so I never started it. Like Anthony Ryan's ravens shadow series and lightbringer series the last book kinda killed it.Might not be as bad as I think though
>>18173449tfw you just wanted a rec and the thread was taken over by shitposting
>>18177180It’s not a terrible ending, it just has too many threads to tie up so it feels rushed. There’s worse endings out there.
>>18177198I may give it a go, it's been a while since I've felt the rush of marathoning a good series. Perhaps this will scratch that itch
>>18171543You're just about to enter the doldrums.
>>18173009Oh go and light yourself on fire, ya martyr.

>>18174677>unfocused, the narrative jumps all over the place every few chapters and the characters are hardly introduced. This is its greatest strength. The next two are more focused narrative but I think you've been filtered.
>>18171249>>18176814Started reading it and so far, I’m liking it. Thanks for the recommendation. Going to be a long read.
>>18171261Spice and wolf.
>>18171619Yes I liked it and finished itIt’s not a long story
>>18173066Kowtow three times and cut off your hands and I’ll spare your nine generations, ant
>>18176557I didn’t like it, dropped it a couple chapters in
>>18177779What didn’t you like about it? Still trying to get into xianxia and I want to know if there’s some pitfalls.
>>18177819Check out Dragon Heart series. It is written by a russian and is more "western". Also it is considered litrpg but after reading it I can say it definitely falls under wuxia category. If you want to get into wuxia/xanxia it is a good start, Reverend insanity is also good but it is much harded and darker series.
>>18177861Will do, but I really don’t care about the western label. Don’t know why you had to put emphasis on that.
>>18177819Just didn’t seem to hit the spotDemon dao shit I liked library of heavens path, it’s a comedy and finishedI like A Record of a Mortals Journey to immortlity, not finished yet but it’s 2 chaps a day, and 2160 already translated, so it’ll be done soonI liked Seized by the System, comedy salted fish protag I liked Seeking the Flying Sword PathI like Cultivation Chat GroupI really liked World’s Best Martial Artist but the translation stopped like 500 chapters in so that sucksYou got the staples like Renegade Immortal or Desolate Era, Martial World, Perfect World, Immortal Mortal, Battle Through the Heavens, A Will Eternal, etcYou can’t go by rating of stories on sites like novelupdates because for some insane reason there are animals who rate everything gay, female protag, or harem high as fuck
>>18177940>>18177762>>18177861how do these compare to cradle (the only one ive read of this genre)?
>>18177940>You can’t go by rating of stories on sites like novelupdates because for some insane reason there are animals who rate everything gay, female protag, or harem high as fuckJesus Christ, I thought this shit would filter them out, but it appears not.
>>18177984I didn’t even read the most recent cradle book and feel very little interest in continuing itPart of that is the delay between books though
>>18178010what xianxia series do you think its universally accepted as one of the best?
>>18178020Depends what you want out of a story, do you want comedy? Light hearted ness? Tragedy? Modern day ? Gamelit shit? Etc
>>18178030Not that anon, but you are the expert here.
>>18178030i assumed xianxia was all cultivation type of novels. i dont know how good comedy in xian xia would be, but seems like it wouldnt be that good. i guess something with action or leveling, fantasy, probably not comedy.
Kallor is kind of a bad ass, ngl
Just started Ringworld and it’s surprisingly fun. I thought it was going to be autistic like Clarke or Asimov but it reminds me of Culture series—or is it the other way around?
>>18173230>also reminder that light novel is a misnomer, the correct term is pulp fiction because that is essentially what this type of fiction is, just instead of 50s pin-up girls on the cover you have anime whoresSothe kind of novels that make up fantasy and science fiction.
/sffg/, what can you recommend that's surreal and comedic? Preferably raunchy as well, but not something that treats strangeness with a sense of revulsion
>>18173066Xianxia is fine, litrpg is pathetic and boring but it's still theoretically literature. Manga pages or God forbid eceleb whores are NOT literature. We have boards for both (/a/ and /vt/ respectively), fuck off there if you want to discuss that.

>>18178125>reminds me of Culture seriesHow so? Is Ringworld even post scarcity?
>>18177861There’s a lot of bad reviews, should I be worried.
>>18172502the inns are unironically the best part.

Reminder that this is the real thread and not that Eastern vs Western garbage.
>>18179140No, I’ll rather discuss eastern fantasy and science fiction novels here.
>>18179227I feel bad that no one will ever remember you for anything, especially nothing literary, because you’re such a loser you couldn’t get into a top institution.
>>18179140Nope /sffg/ is the universal thread for fantasy of all kind, it's only you poltards who blew a gasket over eastern works being discussed here. You should also ask for genetic testing before posting in /wsffg/ by the way, there's at least one (1) non-white Italian in there.
>>18171249Finished book 5, won't start book 6 since it isn't finished and don't want to be left hanging before the grand finale.I'm impressed with his world building and cultivation mechanics it's well thought out and never feels too bullshit. If I had to nitpick one tiny thing it would be the constant repeats of information, he could tone that down a bit.The interactions between Red Lotus and Duke Long + the backstories that relate to them is easily my favorite part of the novel.
>>18179414I always wondered why they try to be reductive when it comes fantasy and science fiction.
>>18179444Book 6 is very fun even if it's not completed. The author has said he wants to finish it, but who can know for certain? He's writing other stories now, and it's going to be difficult for him to continue. RI has basically been purged off the Chinese internet because the author parodied certain Chinese leaders and Fang Yuan's own morality, or lack of. In book 6 there are a lot of other great backstories as well. I'm certain you'd love them. I've always found Thieving Heaven to be very interesting, and more of his backstory comes forth in book 6. As for Duke Long? One cannot help but feel both sympathy and rage at his conduct. What he did to Dragonkin... At the same time he kept true to his beliefs in Heavenly Court.
>>18179532You could never unterstand why they have a purist mindset.

Literally just finished Andy Weir's new book Project Hail Mary. Good. Very much in the style of The Martian.
>>18178125Be wary of the sequels unless you're into giantess fucking.

>>18179816Same thing at this point.
>>18179177>I go to a top 1% institution as an English lit PhDPost thesis title.
>>18178087>i dont know how good comedy in xian xia would be, but seems like it wouldnt be that good. >he doesn't knowTo be fair you can only really enjoy A Will Eternal if you've read a few novels and get how the author plays with the tropes, but it's really one of the best stories I've read.Like the other guy said, you can go with the staples : Renegade Immortal, I shall seal the heavens, Desolate Era, Martial World...Coiling Dragon is the novel that made xianxia popular in the west some years ago if you're interested but I didn't like it that much. They're all finished and have proved their worth overtime. They're also all what you'd expect from cultivation novels, without any big twist on the formula. Don't just pick some random shit from Webnovel. When you feel like you want something more lighthearted I recommend A Will Eternal.
>>18179821Would you recommend it?

>>18180204Several western forums have tried to varying degrees. But they’re awful.
>>18180225What? They interject some politically correct mindset?
>>18180249Just ignore them.
>>18179821Never read Martian, is it good or overhyped.
>>18180276Not that anon, but I've read it.The book moves at a good pace, and has the standard riveting appeal of man against nature, and lost in the wild themes. However, Andy Weir's bad science become a sever distraction all through the book. Space establishments filled to 1 atmosphere with nitrogen in there, 28,000kph vs 720kph turbulence comparisons missing the 1% atmosphere, Potatoes in space (really?!!), microwaving food that already got freeze-dried, statements like figuring out longitude requires precise time. Then the RTG is in the trailer, and yet he's fine after the roll-over, and for that matter, at one point the RTG keeps up with just the rover with some insulation ripped up, but at another point the RTG covers the rover, the trailer, and the really-awful bedroom tent! I think I am really glad the movie-makers ripped out a lot of it. There is perhaps a reason good authors (like Isaac Asimov) hand-wave over parts of science when they know the science is sketch; this author on the other hand goes on to blunder through precise descriptions which detract from the story. And therefore, compared to the movie, what is "additional" in the book is really all bad.I will say however, that it is a fast paced read - a good airplane novel.
>>18180288So it’s another author trying to do hard science when he should be doing soft science instead? Scientists should really start writing more scifi novels.
>>18180169>I've checked out way too many 'good' litrpgWhat are there names? So I can read them myself.
