This feels like a book /lit/ hates. I know all the rationalizations and lazy arguments that will be brought forth in this thread. I don't care to hear them, so spare yourself the time to write them. Just let it be known: the glorious history of mankind comes to an ignoble end this century.

>>17624810
We're fine with that we just prefer that coming from a different Nick a certain NicK LAND
>>
>>17624810
I have never heard of a human being who read this book, apart from perhaps Bostrom himself. Have you read it OP? If yes, can you summarize?
>>
>the glorious history of mankind comes to an ignoble end this century
but why
>>
Huh? I love that book. /lit/ is anti-scientism in general, and that book is pretty harsh on the AI reddit scientism crowd who thinks AI is going to mean drone pizza delivery and better Red Dead Redemption sequels until the end of time.

Bostrom's other work on simulation theory etc seems pretty reddit though.
>>
>>17624953
because total sum of all human compute power is exceeded by total compute power of our artificial computers. happens in about 10-15 years
>>
>>17624978
The idea that AI will "take over humans" in some capacity and become extremely influential in a negative sense rather than positive still reeks of "scientism".

Do compsci bugmen still seethe over chinese rooms?

what else is it going to do to secure its existence?

I used to do debate back in high school and my full encounter with this book is using is to make bullshit args on AI

I'm reading it right now and generally enjoying it. There's a really weird section in the second or third chapter about genetics and IQ, which caught me completely off guard. Bostrom borders on advocating for "positive" eugenics here, and goes as far as laying out a specific method to increase genetic intelligence.

I think people who like Accelerationism for more than the memes would really enjoy this book desu.
>>
>>17625307
Weird I remember it being an extreme warning against such genetic tampering. Doesn't he specifically say that rich people will monopolize the process and it will happen iteratively over a few generations until you basically get racial segregation of humanity?
>>
>>17625326
A country with an an entire population of geniuses is going to leave a country with only an elite of geniuses eating dust.
>>
>>17625215
I don't think that's scientism, it's not a paean to the explanatory power of science or our ability to wield its technological fruits. It's more like an admission that we barely know what we're creating and given the extremely disruptive effects of past technologies we can expect even worse disruptions as the technologies become more sophisticated and powerful. AI even in a very mundane sense can be very dangerous, which the book goes over in detail. The more outlandish variant of AI might sound ridiculous but it's an unknown, we have no idea what is going to happen when we start trying to create digital approximations of thinking. Maybe it will lead to nothing much, but given the potential risks it is worth thinking about, if it's even plausible that creating thinking machines is not actually that complicated, a matter of a few algorithms and processing power, then that is a serious threat.

Look up Samuel Huntington's "Davos man," and Lebedoff's "new elite." It won't be countries, it will be rootless financial elites doing what they already do: spoiling their terrible children.

Imagine if, instead of just spoiling their children by giving them a carefree hedonistic existence that trains them to see the working class as their fore-ordained serfs, the horrible transatlantic nouveau riche caste also spoiled their children by making them immune to cancer and other diseases, making them unnaturally healthy and beautiful for unnaturally long lives. They would be just as worthless, but far more tyrannical.

We have populations now with infinite access to higher education and all we can produce is nouveau riche trash and "clever" technical specialists who can't run their own lives. The upper classes tend toward narcissism and schizophrenia because of their infantilization. That's where eugenics would lead at this point in human development. That, and the Chinese creating insectoid sub-races (worker drones, soldier drones, scientist drones) like Brave New World.

>get racial segregation of humanity
You mean like today?

They'd also make them high IQ though so they wouldn't be worthless, they'd be a sort of proto-ubermensch

Human history already long came to an end. Bostromian idea of intelligence is just brute force pattern recognition and general problem solving, see: paper clip maximizer. Machines have already been better pattern recognizers and problem solvers (see: all of big data pattern recognition algorithms, and Chess or Go engines). We already live in a post-human world. And yet, what changed? The only real radical interruption will be when artificial sapience is achieved by programming a desiring machine, but this is ages away.
>>
>>17625413
A high-IQ schizo would actually be pretty worthless. It's ultimately too reductive to collapse everything to IQ, though of course, IQ does count for a lot.
>>
>>17625413
They already have higher IQ than their working class equivalents, much higher in many cases, and they're retards. Who do you think is backing all this tech censorship drama, tranny nonsense, feelgood celebrity and corporation worship, infantilization of politics, completely uncritical trust of "experts" on the news and social media? It's all these overfed rich people with "higher IQs" than poor people.

No one is saying don't improve the stock. I am saying don't push the "Let's Improve the Stock" button while humanity is currently in the grip of gluttonous, self-obsessed, mentally ill, evil, and retarded people. Of all the dystopias mankind could terminate in, please don't make it the "LA latte-drinking metrosexuals decide who is and isn't 'superior' enough to govern the planet" dystopia.

>>17625403
Far far worse.
>>
>>17625441
>It's ultimately too reductive to collapse everything to IQ,
well of course, but a bunch of tall, healthy, beautiful, high IQ, uber-wealthy people are going to just mop the floor with everyone else. The peasants might even just start worshiping them of their own volition, look at celebrities
>>
>>17625452
bro humans stopped worshiping beauty 2000 years ago with the close of hellenism to christianity. Have you ever heard of ressentiment? The ugly do not prostrate themselves towards the beautiful, they think themselves better for being ugly.
>>
>>17625452
They will win by default. Do the tall healthy beautiful rich people who currently dominate all academic postings, politics, and cushy media and lobbying jobs deserve to be mopping the floor with their flyover slaves?

Disdain for plebs doesn't mean worship of oligarchs. Especially not these fucking awful people. If you want aristocracy back there are better ways to go about it. You're talking about dumping Miracle Grow on a dung heap overrun by stinkweeds. At least purge the weeds first man.
>>
>>17625437
>but this is ages away
See you in 30 years.
>>
>>17625340
Not really, do you think millions of geniuses are going to be happy with doing menial work? Our economy relies on much more grunt work than genius.

>inb4 menial work will be automated by then
People have been saying that for decades, yet the most significant change in the distribution of labor has been carried on the back of delocalization, not automation.
>>
>>17625467
win what? you fuckers are so god damned spiritually retarded. Win WHAT exactly? The war of intelligence to swallow up the universe with your big brain?

>>17625472
lol. Name one single researcher working on a desiring machine. Name one single theoretically AGI that knows anything about desire? You are the ultimate dilettante. AI researchers don't even know what the word "transcendental" means except Negarestani and he's just an unknown philosopher to the big tech lab giants.

>I finally watched the youtube video that helped me understand Deleuze, I have to go pick a fight with everyone so I can use this

HEY BUS DRIVER DO YOU EVEN FUCKING KNOW WHAT A DESIRING MACHINE IS? GOD!!!
>>
>>17625467
>If you want aristocracy back
I don't, didn't mean to imply that. We have an aristocracy now anyway, and while the one we had 300 years ago might have been better in some ways you can't turn back the clock of technological and political evolution. I was just speculating on how people might react to this new elite caste.

literally only rationalist nerds in the philosophy department -- the ones who think college is about sitting with professors and being like so totally philosophical means you have to hate women and sjws.

are you a woman who wandered in here from twitter to hate the place for ten minutes and then leave? are you on the rag or something? you're being very unpleasant, you should try to have fun in a new place and learn its customs rather than skipping right to being a sour cunt

can you post your tits?

>>17625326
He warns against it for the same reason someone like Land advocates for it. Personally, I think it poses a real danger to what we think of as "human" in general, but it's such a fascinating idea.

>Name one single researcher working on a desiring machine
Desire is emergent you fucking retard. People like you are the reason we're gonna get all our atoms disassembled by the end of the century. Your philosophy and spirituality and morality and transcendence will be worth less than rotten garbage.
