I played tuba, trombone, and trumpet. But I wanted to play the accordion or maybe the keyboard. I was already a year in before I had this revelation though

the general rule based on school band class gender composition is woodwinds are fembrained and brasses are malebrained. for strings gender composition seems to be about even except for the big heavy ones which are malebrained. rhythm is malebrained except bells.
>>
>>19216082
tuba is male brained for sure
>>
How fembrained is the theremin?
>>
i was a marimba player :^))

It was a strange feeling being the only guy who played flute in concert band but once I trooned out it all made sense in retrospect. Funnily enough before flute I started with trumpet but it just didn't feel right to me. Does this mean I'm trutrans??

Obviously the harp is the most fembrained instrument. Is there really any competition? The most malebrained "instrument" is the personal computer.

back when i was in college for music, it seemed like brass instruments were usually played by guys (barring like the French horn and sometimes trumpet), I know tuba was only guys, as well as an ftm, lol
The flute, at least from what i saw was basically exclusively played by girls and one extremely gay guy.. i know all the harpists were female, but it was basically like two people, so idk if that counts.. i was studying piano performance, and it seemed pretty gender neutral to me.. maybe 60% girls/40% guys.. but idk, i think music just had more girls studying it in general, so it was probably pretty even, considering that.. cellists also seemed really gender neutral to me.. there's definitely a lot of lgbt people that study music, and a lot of Asians and Jews too.. (myself included little piano jew tranny freak, lmao)
>>
>>19218619
i think this partially is a cultural/remnants from sexism of the past thing, cause centuries ago women weren't generally thought "suitable" to play in orchestras and other ensembles, except for the harp, where it was specifically sought after to have those parts performed by professional female harpists.. obviously you had musicians start to break that mold in the 19th century (mostly in piano), like Clara Schumann, but it was pretty rare back then, unfortunately.. but this probably caused the harp to remain as a sort of "exclusively female instrument" in everyone's minds still to this day if i were to guess.. not to mention, this probably also caused a lot of the more prestigious student-teacher lineages to generally be women teaching other women, which further probably feeds into that.. so i guess in a sort of roundabout way, it's cause misogyny that transformed over the years culturally most likely..
>>
>>19218619
Because it sounds delicate and pretty and is used in the higher range, same goes for flute and violin and the opposite is for instruments like tuba and trombone which sound imposing and massive
>>
>>19223725
Harp has almost as much range as a piano, try again.

Although in a large orchestra it's mainly the high notes that cut through I suppose
>>
>>19223725
Also plenty of girls play cello which is low. Cello sounds nice though, brass instruments are literally just farting noises amplified through metal pipes. I think there is definitely a subconscious association between pitch of an instrument and gender, from our associations with voice. But trumpet is high and still masc because it's fart tube

I play the flute and recorder casually but I'm malebrained
>tfw wanted to play the violin as a kid but was too scared it was something only girls did (even though my male relative played it) and never got lessons
>>
>>19223742
I said it's used in the higher range not that it's actual full range is in the high notes
>>19223769
Cello still sounds pretty but in a milf way, I think it's a combination of timbre and pitch that lends an instrument to a cultural gender association
>>
Clarinets are pretty femalebrained, along with harps, flute, and cello

Guitar, percussion, brass, and piano are all pretty malebrained

guitar is weird, being GOOD is malebrained but being mediocre is female
>>
>>19216082
when I played I never met a single girl playing Trombone
only a couple girls played French Horn, and a handful on the trumpets
none on the tuba either
I've also never met a female piano or guitar player
actually most girls i've known who had musical talents at all either went for wind instruments or singing
>>
>>19216082
Harp or flute is the most fembrained.

Basoon or bass or tuba is the most malebrained.

T. Played in orchestras for many years

But it's more what kind of fem or malebrained you are... All instruments have distinct personalities though for sure.
>>
>>19216811
Expected.
>>
>>19216082
most male brained is a guitar with any more than 6 strings, especially if it's got a 'metal' design.
most fembrained is singing, piano, or violin.

>>
>>19216082
Fucking retarded thread as a musician I know plenty of people of both genders who play a wide assortment of instruments. That being said low brass is for men.
