In this case, it's about the Tanith "First & Only" regiment, the only survivors of their planet's destruction by an enemy fleet that ambushed and wiped out most of their army while it was being loaded onto troopships for offworld deployment. The only ones who had embarked in time were a light infantry/scout regiment, with the highest ranking surviving officer being a commissar from another planet who gets put in charge of the unit. Imperial guard units that fight with enough valor and recognition sometimes get lucky and are granted a new frontier planet to colonize Roman-style, so the commissar is trying to balance keeping as many of the Tanith alive as possible so their culture and civilization can survive with having to perform dangerous missions to get the necessary recognition. In general you can't go wrong with Dan Abnett 40k books.
Been a long time since I read them but IIRC the "Last Chancers" omnibus was also good. That's about a low ranking officer in a penal unit made up of soldiers convicted of criminal activity and used for suicidal attacks and missions, led by a religious fanatic officer who will offer those he thinks have redeemed themselves a pardon. Main character is a low level officer who murdered another soldier fighting over a woman and is trying to stay alive long enough to get pardoned.

And they fought in that guerilla style that is so annoying to fight by conventional militaries. Kinda like insurgents in Afghanistan. They hit, they run, and then they disappear into the scenery and you will not find them. And Fremen had one more advantage: Sardaukar were extensively trained to fight in melee against people who had personal shields. You have to slow your strike just before contact in order to pass through the shield. They had this honed to a tee. They were VERY good at it. But that's the thing: Fremen did not have that training. You CAN'T wear personal shields in the desert, that attracts the worms. They the Fremen DON'T slow down their strikes. So to fight these guys you have to go into their turf, into the deep desert. And you can't wear shields. And when that sand dune next to you suddenly becomes alive and attacks you with melee weapons... the sardaukar instinct of slowing down their strikes is actually a detriment. It's that extra blink of an eye that makes the difference.
