It makes every Major a backstabbing bitter asshole because their ability to retire rides on their ability to get promoted in time. It makes every O-5 and O-6 become obsessed with trying to outdo everyone else in their grade in every possible way in order to get that MQ and pin on that bird or star, even if it burns people out in the process. The shit trickles down to junior officers, who will get fucked down in a 3 shop for their whole career unless they take part in the game and who will end up working til 2000 every day regardless due to ossifer culture autism, and then to NCOs through the similar NCOER system, which leads to dicksucking and brown-nosing by those wishing to promote.
On top of the systemic issues, OPTEMPO is higher than ever despite the GWOT being essentially done with, and to cap it off HQDA pulls moves like spending tens of millions of dollars on base renaming when the bases being renamed house soldiers in shitty moldy barracks that lead to them deciding to ETS instead of being retained.
The consequences of all of this have been a little easier to hide, since unlike in say the Navy where declining manpower and falling standards directly leads to shit like boat collisions, the Army operating platoons at half strength isn't nearly as noticeable.

Prior enlisted here. I was an 0341 in the Marine Corps from 2017-2021 and I'm still kinda upset I never got deployed anywhere salty. Would joining the army national guard and waiting for Taiwan to kick off be a solid move if I wanted to get sent over?
I don't think I ever made the best rifleman and I don't want anything to do with the Marine Corps, so I'm thinking of going Arty in the National Guard. I'd do 11c but I'm hearing that they can be swapped to 11b really quickly.
Obviously the army will suck as well, but I still wanted to be on the ground.

The unit they're in plays a huge part in their experience level at promotion as well - I got promoted way too early along with tons of other guys because my unit is constantly starved for NCOs, and I made several big mistakes early on because of my inexperience. Meanwhile you have places like the 75th where promotions above CPL are extremely competitive and hard to achieve.
