Acog, red/holographic and magnifier. Personally the acog is best for the package and weight
>>
It has its inherent flaws, sure, but I can’t believe how easy it is to shoot at 150 yards with the irons on my PTR. I think I got a pretty good one, it eats any cheap shit I run through it and the sight posts are nice a straight. The only issue I’ve had is the slim handguard getting too hot to hold after 15 minutes of steady fire. I’d been avoiding the wide handguard as it looks a bit angular for comfort, but I guess I’d rather be able to hold it period even if it’s a bit cumbersome up front.
>>
>>56164616
Midwest industries makes a okay handguard, I can personally speak for the spuhr and say I got haven’t an issue. It also for the barrel to cool much quicker than the slimline handguards

Okay, so I narrowed it down to these: basically my criteria are 30 mm tube, FFP, at least 1-8x magnification, under $1000, and no huge objective.

A couple of them are on Optics planet for like $50 cheaper with a coupon. Although not really sure how to narrow it down past this.

I have GLX 1-8 and I don't like it very much at all.
-biggest reason is I just don't like the reticle. I'm not a fan of chevron reticles for precision shooting to begin with. I don't like that the mil/moa hashes don't have any numbers on them whatsoever, making it annoying and lengthy for me to find the correct holdover. there is a wider hash every 5 mils but it's still slow to count between these. this combined the fact that the scope can't be elevation (or windage) dialed makes it annoying for me to shoot long range with it.
-the optical quality is not very good and the eye placement to get the clearest picture is very narrow. being slightly off results in a dim / shaded picture.
-the illumination is really bad, not just that it doesn't get extremely bright, which is excusable in my opinion, but the illumination isn't crisp, it looks grainy and uneven brightness.
for what it's worth I have shot great groups with the scope, I just think there's more attractive options. my friend's low end vortex scopes impressed me. the glass was clearer than the primary arms and the reticles were more conventional which I prefer. I would go for the Viper PST Gen II if you can, and the Strike Eagle if you can't. I've shot both of these as well and much prefer them to the Primary Arms GLX.

want to get a battle rifle. how important really is barrel length?
seems like 18" should be the shortest barrel i'd want for this calibre and purpose.
is it worth it to go with 20" ?

considering I don't line inna mountains or the woods. so potential is for alot of open ground, large field of view, long distance targets/engagements

Its the cluster rail that Vltor made for the SOCOM 2 model. From what ive seen they are very hard to find. I managed to snag the rail by itself a few years ago for like a hundred bucks.
>>
>>56184709
18 is fine
>>
>>56184709
Unless making a pocket sniper with a 13in bull barrel and collapsing/folding stock, 18in is the shortest you should go to get maximum practical potential out of a gun you plan on carrying around. You can squeeze another couple inches in with a bullpup if you go that route, but that path remains less traveled and the locals say it's for good reason. It all depends on application

>18" should be the shortest barrel i'd want for this calibre and purpose.
16" is fine, and more common with most barrel makers. 18" is better, but that's already too long for a utility purpose, .308rifle. If you want long range precision, go 22"+. What's your intended and may god forgive me for this, "Philosophy Of Use"? Hunting? 16". Potential combat? 16". Bench rest? 22"+. Competition? 22"+.

There aren't many situations where you need a longer heavier barrel and anything under 600yards, shoots exactly the same on a 16" barrel. Barrel length starts to matter more and more the further that bullet travels.

If I was going for budget glass, I'd be taking a hard look at the gen 2 vipers from vortex. Leupold has some sub-$1k lines with very decent glass as well. 10x will be plenty serviceable at even longer ranges, but I'd probably opt for 4-16, 3-18 or something similar if it was me.

Shoot at competitions instead. You will ironically go through less ammunition while gitting gud. They cost like $20, there's usually a couple each month, and usually need 200 rounds at most which you almost never use all of (of those 200, much will be pistol ammunition if you shoot multi-gun).

Thanks, frens. Seemed like the way to go was either a strike eagle or slx - looks like they're made in the same factory and the differences are mostly with the reticle. After checking the used market, it seemed like strike eagle 1-8 FFP's were more common than slx's - I figure I can pick up the slx new, then if I hate the reticle I can basically trade it for a strike eagle later.

Try sub 180K. No one that can afford a $300k rental will want to pay $1,400+ a month. When they can just buy a home; unless it's a popular spot for vacations or wealthy people. If you turn a $300k home into a rental, those rental people will fuck it up. Unless you can pick out the right white family to live in it.

Why not be a test bed for the Ruger sfar then? Buy one, use it then keep us up to date with its performance and reliability. My logical mind just doesn't see the point. If you want smaller and lighter, AR15. If you want more style, then AK47. There are a lot of great options, a meme AR10 doesn't have a spot to call home.

> My logical mind just doesn't see the point.
How? Smaller, lighter, handier, but in the same heavy-hitting cartridge. Should we all lug around 15lb PTRs just to sling .308? What if I'm going camping?

Yes, but in .308

You know they make those in 5.56 AND .308 too, right?
> There are a lot of great options, a meme AR10 doesn't have a spot to call home.
Sure it does, in the "light but powerful" spot. Just because there are visible stink lines coming off any AR platform the second it leaves /arg/ doesn't mean we're allergic to them or something, the AR platform is one of the best in the world and /brg/ knows it.

Still not seeing it. Your ptr is fat cause you put all that bullshit on it. All a fal or prt needs is an optic. Your throwing money at a nothing burger problem. What will you do with an ultra light AR10? Only soldiers carry their rifles for dozen of hours. Are you going to volunteer for Ukraine? Well, in my mind's eye I can already picture what he would do, if he got that 8lb Ruger Sfar, just from the way he reasons his logic. I theorize it would go something like this;
>Puts a magpul PRS stock on Sfar for perfect comfort and eye relief
>Put on an LPVO or scope to get the best precision at max range
>Adds a bipod for stability
And JUST like that, he would turn that 8lbs Ruger Sfar into a 13lbs anchor.
>>
>>56197485
But that's all so reasonable. I also suggest a bull barrel for accuracy and a tactical light for night ops. Just makes sense at that point. And a nice big muzzle device, I like the Viper brake. Good idea to add lead shot to the rear stock for balance. Just for ergonomics...

I went with PA-10 receiver, replaced the buffer spring'n'weight, use their MPT trigger and have that down to ~4mm slop with 3.2-3.5# pull. Toolcraft double ejector nitride bcg with the 6.5 spec pin/hole. (cheap) ambi handle and safety because I'm a lefty.

Don't really know what I want for the barrel yet.
Kind of want the gun to be an all rounder, compromizing size and portability, and still capable of 800+yd at moa.
I also don't like SS anything, specially not the barrel. Gun is set for/intended to be rifle length gas.
Don't care bout suppressors as I'll never fire a .30 cal indoors. I have .22lr for indoors.

I was thinking a 20" faxon nitride in gunner profile. Will probably choose an adj. block as I want to play with different weights and powers of handloads without feeling the need to mess with spring and buffer weight combos.
Aero has a block that claims to not get as dirty/not need cleaning as often as other types of adj.

Gonna be 3 or 4 months before I finish it up (poorfag). Will probably buy the tube, block, and handguard before making final decision on the barrel.
Shit I also need a vise, viseblock, and armorer tools.
>>
>>56200172
>Don't really know what I want for the barrel yet.
Criterion and Faxon seem to be the best, but I only say that because those seem to be in a lot of top barrel lists. >>56200172
>I was thinking a 20" faxon nitride in gunner profile
You're going to need a handguard that fits right, fits your PA receiver and allows access to an adj. gas block.
>Aero has a block
Stop right there. I wouldn't trust anything that isn't a JP gas block at the minimum. They've been making and improving gas blocks for 9years. Their gas blocks are sold out consistently for a reason. If not a JP, then find something that's just as high end and proven. A bad gas block fucks your entire system up. You can cut corners on the trigger, receiver, grip, but not the gas block.
>Aero has a block that claims
Wow, someone selling you something, claims they are the best and greatest. What a surprise!
>buy the tube, block, and handguard
Buy the handguard last, get a feel for how that stuff you have on it lines up. It will also allow you to measure where your adj. gas block needs space.

You can always rebarrel it. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the PSA/H&R/NDS stuff, especially if you want a specialty product like an XM177E2. I'm sure that stuff will be hard to find for a long time, and even when it's available it won't be as authentic as a real Colt.
>>56211423
You should buy a cheap wood stock set from Numrich and make your own. I've since replaced the Ithaca with a Tac-14 Hardwood (shorter but heavier, both of which are pluses for me), and if I could find an affordable set of vintage 870 wood I'd probably make my own. I've already got it full of Wingmaster parts and am considering stripping off the park and bluing it.

After all these years, I still can't tell if i like it or not. Does it need a redesign? Does anyone care enough to redesign it? Even if they made it run 5.56, it still couldn't compete with modern high end ARs of today. A part of me wants one, just because it is a dinosaur that will stop being produced in the next ten years.

Personal preference really. Mil spec justwerkz and how a "tuned out" one functions is just fine.
>cut corners on reciever
It's a DPMS gen 1, older design sure, but when you match PSA's frame to the proper gas/buffer system it's fine.
>cut corners on grip

Yeah, but eventually you might want something better. Geissle triggers are top notch and when they're worn, they feel almost a pound lighter. If you want to be as precise as you can be, you'll need a lite trigger pull.

>when you match PSA's frame to the proper gas/buffer system it's fine.
That's not what I meant or implied. I was implying that an after market handguard might not match your receiver in the style, lines, cuts and attachment. Really research the handguard before you buy it or you might end with a rail gap where the receiver and handguard meet. Out of precaution and saving headaches, I just suggest that you stick with the same company's parts. Like, don't mix a PSA lower, with a BCM receiver with a geissle handguard, for example.
