I own a primary arms 3x prism for my AK with the 7.62x39 acss reticle, and a TA01NSN from Trijicon and they both have the same shitty eye relief but the Trijicon feels way more solid and the glass is way better. Too bad eye relief sucks in just about every optic except for a select few, because a lot of these scopes are marketed as "CQB capable", but neither high end LPVOs nor prism scopes have good enough eye relief to compete with a red dot. Is there any worthy magnified optic out there? Or do I have to rely on a red dot riding on top of an optic for close quarters shooting?

I'm probably not going to replace it to be honest tho, at least not for years. There really isn't anything wrong with an mcx platform, the new one eliminates a lot of the weight criticism as well and the criticism of the handguard not holding zero.

>but neither high end LPVOs nor prism scopes have good enough eye relief to compete with a red dot
Is there any site at all that lists eye boxes/relief/fov for all LPVOs or prisms, like so you can sort them? I'm genuinely kind of curious what the largest 1x one is and the range. Also if there's been any improvement in the last few years say or it's pretty much static.

I've seen a chart for magnifiers on reddit but that and this table for acogs is about it. Part of the problem is that the manufacturer's specs for eye relief don't tell the whole story. Some of them are listed way shorter than they are (TA33 for example). Some of them have a tiny usable eye relief length while others kind of trail off and you can still use them effectively a long way off from "optimal"
It's just really hard to tell if it works for you without trying it out for yourself. Luckily with the secondhand accessories market it's pretty easy to flip stuff.

The trijicon website itself is straight up wrong about weights
>>
>>55291900
No, it has. I've thought about it more recently, I've made mistakes though and learned things, also I don't know enough about nods to make an informed purchase and I've been putting off getting them till I'm more informed, I also want a good set of dual nods which would probably cost somewhere in the ball park of 6-8k, also a laser illuminator isn't going to be cheap, so add in another couple k, then I need a good helmet and mount for it, so that's like another 2k. Unless I go with a bump, which I don't think is a great investment. So I'd be looking at easily over 12k of gear to buy. When I compare that to basically just a 2.5k gun, It's a lot more appealing financially to just buy a 2.5k gun. I bought the mcx because I wanted a bag gun 300blkout. I bought the suppressor before I bought the gun, when the wait times looked like 90 days, I was originally just going to get a BCM upper, but I found the MCX tacops and it appealed to me. So I just impulse bought it and thought in a couple months I'd have the suppressor and I'd be groovin, but now its been 5 months, a new MCX has come out, and my interest has shifted more to nods and using my KAC CQB for night ops and shit. So now I'm cutting off the dead fat from my small collection.

Yeah I agree, and I've been realizing that a lot lately. I am human and have made mistakes in some of my purchases. I'm trying to correct that now and just get into nods now. It really has been appealing to me lately because whoever has night vision capability opens up a lot more opportunities for operation and ability. I also recently realized that you can use them during the day, just in doors, in dark buildings where there are no lights. That's why you'll see operators with nods on their helmet during the day when they are raiding a building. Also the reality is likely if glowies are ever on the menu, it will probably be during night.

At some point in the next 5-8 years we're going to see fusion stuff start to become available to civilian market and this will become a moot argument (at least with enough $$$$) since you'll have both quads and smart thermal highlights fused in your view, probably with some rudimentary AR capability too (stuff like compass are gimmes, though I'll be interested if any standards develop for simple gun interfacing so you can see ammo or a virtual reticle).

>Quads arent for checking out bushes. They are for reading/processing rooms faster and operating fast moving vehicles with less scanning. Also thermals work poorly into and out of bushes. They see heat, not magic.
Some of that makes sense. Weren't they originally developed for pilots flying at night? Thermals may work poorly into and out of bushes but they work a lot better than nods would under the conditions I described. I was imagining a guy in thick brush/bushes poking out of a duckblind/sniper's nest setup with his thermal and icing somebody with these hypothetical nods. But I take your point, if they were being employed correctly they would more likely be using them in buildings. Don't get me wrong, I like both, I was just fucking around when I made the comment. But I think for 42k they are kind of pushing their value. I think like another anon said, in the next 10 years there is going to be so much better shit that blows the fuck out of quad nods, like the IVAS system the military is experimenting with right now. If that shit takes off and does what it promises, it's revolutionary. Will probably be expensive as fuck though, but there would be almost no reason to use anything else in the same price range.

Holy hell you guys are silly LARPERS discussing this as if you'll be in a survival/battle Royale game, what's worse yet is that you guys really believe you have plot armor lol. If you guys believe the elite who run the world are going to allow for a civil war or anarchy shtf situation take place where people are running around lawlessly battling it out and creating factions from scratch ala New Vegas... you guys have another thing coming. You will see ZERO fighting in your lifetime unless you're actually either in the military in a combat arms MOS, and as a civilian you will probably never have to shoot anyone and if you did it will be your CCW pistol (duty pistol if cop) at close range at some nigger with a hi-point. Your mixed grandchildren will sell off your guns back to the government for cuck bucks and coupons to see the newest woke 5D movie. And by the time people chose to actually revolt (though I doubt it due to demographics change) we'll be so under control due to the immense technological advantage of the ever more tyranical government that those nods will be retro garbage like an old NES console, when the next gen night vision is fielded by Private Jamal Sanchez and his job is to smoke you out of the woods. Buy your shit for fun, larp, etc. But don't take it so seriously where you two idiots debate about life and death, because unless door kicking is your actual line of work and you're going around murdering people for international bankers, you will never operate with any of it. Maybe you get lucky and you shoot some trailer trash breaking into your cabin at night with your thermal or nods, but nothing a high candela flashlight couldn't handle. My PVS-14 is for night hikes and star gazing, my thermal is for hunting varmints and hogs, anything else would be pretend and LARP.

>Damn, but that's why I've held off though. What set are you referring to?
Id highly suggest L3 unfilmed articulating units which means really DTNVS, 31s or 1531s
>Thermals
Thermals show a lot of heat, you need to look for moving heat/unnaturally hot objects still. Unless you are looking for buck ass naked people in 0F you will likely have hot rocks, plants that got heated, hot cars, burning tires, etc that will all clutter the thermal significantly. Take a look at pic in >>55292081, its two rocks and spearman hiding in gortex next to them. Now this is daylight so the rocks are closer to spearman's temp but this is also at under 100yd. At night those rocks hold their heat for a quite a while and with the limited resolution of thermals you dont need to match the temp of the rock as much as you need to stand infront of/behind/ontopof that rock and you will exist within operator eye clutter. Operator will have to delineate two different shades of white/black and ascertain that the camouflaged individual in question is not just a larger/more sunwarmed portion of a rock. This is rock centric but replace it with concrete, stone, steel, cars or any object that heats up during the day.

Secondary heat sources also can gradient out a thermal. All thermals display information as a gradient of temps that they can see. White hot will have pure white be the hottest thing in the image with pure black be the coldest thing in the image. If this delta is small like 50-90F for example, you get good contrast between objects. If this delta is large like lets say 50F to a 1500F campfire, you will have a much harder time spotting the 98.6F human in the image. So if you can light fires or use exceedingly hot objects to mask your observation directions between potential OPs and yourself its GG.

Not-shitty is what I meant though, stuff that is literally the best of both with no downsides such that you'd have zero reason not to use it if you could and then get rid of everything dedicated.

And I think with the progress on wearable displays that's where it's going to come from on the civvie side.

>Thermal (cont.)
But the most important feature for avoiding thermals is simply terrain masking. You arent hot enough to heat up a bush you brush past and the thermal viewing 17 deg x 10 deg @ 500-1500yd away isnt sensitive enough to detect your sweat that flicked off your multicam black ballcap. Proper terrain masking is a staple of concealment regardless of time of day, observation system or technological level.
>IVAS
IVAS is battery cucked at a far greater rate than any of the other technology we've compared here. Imagine your smart phone has half a dozen cameras open and is playing several games at once. Think about the battery life of that and the heat dissipation of the chips involved.
>>55292294
Shit tier post, modern tubes exceed the specs of issued omni 8 and unissued omni 9 specs. Thermal proliferation and advancements are solidly on the side of larping civilians as well. Remember PAS13???? Of all of the shit to get in a tissy about small arms and individual soldier systems are probably the most obtainable to random internet people. You should be posturing the stronger cohesive C2, better SIGINT and superior targeting pipeline that state actors have. But that would require you to have reading comprehension and understand what you are talking about.

Thanks for the info. Noted.
>IVAS is battery cucked
In 10 years bro...If it performs and does what the military wants it to do, they will dump millions and millions of dollars into funding research for that thing and battery technology will be vastly improved by then anyway. It will be optimized. The simple fact of the matter is that even if it isn't the IVAS system, other systems will emerge in 10 years that will be many times better than what we have now.

And when I tried to research it at last there are so damn many options and opinions, even for nice stuff. And even at way off full price, $1k+ is still a pretty sizable chunk of change to drop on a single thing for me. Just wanted some anon second opinions. what is the appropriate AR for river pirates @ 1500m?
>>
>>55292694
Eform, it's bullshit dude. Yeah it bothers the fuck out of me that they haven't even finished february yet. If they continue with this trajectory, it's going to be over 300 days by the time they get to mine in april. I bought mine when they were approving them at 90 days and under, then of course, as soon as I buy a suppressor and start the form, the wait time fucking skyrockets exponentially. Silencer shop fucked us, they had like 2 months of eform 4's saved up and then dropped them all on the ATF in one day. Then a surge of people started buying suppressors as well right around march and april when it became known that they are getting good turn around time. Still though the fucking ATF said they'd hire more people to keep the times down and they haven't. They have literally year+ backlog of paper forms to get through to clear it out, and the paper forms are still coming in for them. Its totally fucked. They are making shit up too. Claiming that the holdup is because of FBI background check slowdown, but the FBI has said they gave them direct access to the system database, and I've personally seen literally 8 hour turn around times for eform 4's that people have submitted with military orders to PCS, so they accelerate the process to push them through. literally less than 24 hours. That just shows that if they really wanted to, they could be churning these things out. Clearly no fucking FBI background check wait time for that guy huh? What a load of shit.

This process is so fucking long compared to every other government process.
>>
>>55292776
I honestly and genuinely hate conspiracy crap in general. Incompetence, lack of funding, shitty systems, etc are a lot more common if boring explanations. But the ATF's performance has been so abysmal and seems to have gotten even worse, not better, over the last few months when instead one would normally expect it to improve as the kinks got worked out. I really half wonder if there has been some direction from the top to make it worse. Except that doesn't even make any sense it's so stupid. But fuck me.

Silencer Shop and Capital Armory and a few others definitely fucked up, but as you say that's no excuse. They moved fast on forms for all the shops they shut down for previous minor issues, typos and so on, stuff with zero ill intent. They should be batching and automating and hiring.
>>
>>55292877
Oh
>>
>>55292901
My honest to god theory, is they genuinely don't want us to own suppressors, so they are deliberately making the process as difficult and drawn out as possible to discourage many from owning NFA items, suppressors. I think such an agenda is influenced by the higher ups in the ATF, they just had a change of leadership and all the sudden the wait times skyrocketed.

Think of the legal context. There is a major push right now against and for gun regulation, and the NFA and suppressors specifically are being challenged on multiple fronts, even being reviewed by the supreme court as we speak, and Texas absolutely BTFOing the ATF every single day.
Also gun grabbers are on the offensive, doing everything they can
People severely underestimate the effect the bruen decision is having on the second amendment landscape right now.
I have no doubt that whatever the ATF is doing right now, it's intentional.

It's a restrictor over the gas port similar to the SCAR, except it's on a "barrel" that rotates. Just cuts out the jet middle man. Very similar in function to SCAR selector, just more settings. I guess you could say that because it uses a single, smaller port for a particular setting that it might fill that setting with lead faster. I've cleaned the selector once on my 7.62x39 barrel because lrbho wasn't 100% on my desired setting. That's after several years of steel case though, and nothing stops you from bumping it to the next setting until you get an opportunity to clean it and restore the soft shooting. Moving between gas settings is similar AR buffer tuning, each setting is like stepping up or down between weights

I hope it works out for you. I'm kind of underwhelmed by the lack of development the SCAR has seen. It could be the best, but FN seems allergic to feedback. Other than support and a better design, what do you expect the 16 to do for you better than the 416? Finer can/setup tuning?

I fell for the Witt Machine SME meme and put it on my 10.5" SBR and took it out shooting last weekend. Now the gun does one of two things when fired:

> With the blastcan off, using just the brake, the gun has a concussive force that is obnoxiously intense enough to literally shake my teeth when I fire it
or
> With the blastcan on, the gun has significantly less felt volume/concussive force, becomes a dream to shoot, and as a bonus it spits out fireballs

I know that conventional logic dictates that the only worthwhile muzzle device on a 10.5" barrel is a birdcage (if you're poor) or a suppressor (if you're not), but fuck me the gun is so much fun to shoot now.

My dad was happy with this gun for 14 years, does that make it good? No it doesn't.
>you expect the 16 to do for you better than the 416?
You know I've owned a SCAR before? I only sold it because the things needed to make it fit my needs didn't exist yet.
>>
>>55292948
I agree with pretty much everything you're saying. I think they are intentionally gumming up the shit, also look at what they are doing with braces now after before being cool with them for years even saying you can shoulder them, also 80% receivers, when again for years, they were fine with them. There is a huge push for trying to take guns and make it harder to own and use them, especially sbr's, suppressors. They don't want us to have the same toys as them, but I also think they are trying to convince the public that they need the ATF to exist, when right now there are some big legal precedents going directly against that and showing their overreach and unconstitutional bullshit that they and other states have been getting away with for years.
>>
Is this the best way to build a 416 clone?
>>
>>55293011
They claim that the their is no background check for form 1's and that's why its faster, because you've already undergone a background check to possess said item before it becoming an NFA item. Which still raises the question, what the fuck is the point of the background check then if its the same as a fucking NICS background check???
>>
>>55293154
I know this, and I'm setting the table of my complaint by getting to that point. If they say that, in writing, I'll move onto your point.
>>
>>55292948
The problem though to me with that, and admittedly often people and organizations do short sighted emotional things for political points that's very true on all sides, but still gun controllers should want the ATF NFA process to be good. A lot of their most realistic path forward, and in principle not even something that bad, would be to have a lot more regulation and checks and so on. That'd be a lot easier to get done if they could point to the NFA process now being super smooth. It's a perfect place to show a naturally suspicious crowd how well government could work. Suppressors and SBRs aren't even things that actually aid shit like mass shootings, people going through the stamp process are demonstrably some of the most law abiding citizens, it should be low hanging fruit. "Government can work and work well" is theoretically something right in the Democrats' wheelhouse even, or at least in the moderate wing. Sabotaging that is fucking stupid. Pointless. And yeah last Administration was also full of stupid point scoring and posturing shit that actively harmed causes they were theoretically for, but fucking hell.

>what happened to silenershop and capital armory?
SS fucked up their software process and weren't transparent about it, so basically for every single form submitted through them from November-early February they just sat on it and accumulated them, then dumped all of them on the ATF in one big drop at once. Which then had a lot of ripple effects.

CA used the same signature for every form rather then having the manager or authorized agent or whatever it was do it each time which is what is supposed to happen so ATF just group denied all of them.

Other outfits have made various lesser screw ups but that's normal for something brand new. The big players blowing it is more irritating since that's supposed to be their specialty in theory.

What's the most decent HK upper? Is the A5 that more of an improvement on the regular HK416 upper?
>>
>>55292988
>>55292988
>what happened to silenershop and capital armory?
They saved up months and months worth of eform 4's in a bundle then dropped them all at one time on the ATF. Causing a huge backlog to be created in less than 24 hours.
>>
>>55293011
>The ATF claims that part of the holdup is the FBI conducting those background checks for your forms
What I remember is it was more complicated then that and was more on the ATF. Basically they initially were submitted the check instantly as soon as they got any eform. But checks are only valid for 30 days by law so that was fucking stupid, because they rapidly fell behind particularly after the big dump so then suddenly they were getting into march and all these eforms they hadn't touched yet were having all background checks expire and would have to do it fucking again. So they ran around like headless chickens and skipped to April for a while, now I guess they only submit when they're getting to them or something? Huge stupid ass cluster fuck upon cluster fuck.
>>
>>55292942
>My honest to god theory, is they genuinely don't want us to own suppressors, so they are deliberately making the process as difficult and drawn out as possible to discourage many from owning NFA items
No fucking duh

I have the 3x micro on a PCC and the 2.5x GLx on my AR. GLx is the better optic, nicer glass and the useable eyebox is massive. The micro eyebox feels lackluster by comparison but its form factor goes great with my backpacking plinker. If it's physically possible to build a GLx-tier micro for $300-400 I'd be over the moon.

Kiji, better tape switches, different forend options.

And I've spent a year shooting suppressed DI shit to realize that pistons are better, and then some time shooting the 416 to realize that the SCAR is better and now with the things up top its tenable

You can say that again. Beams are still a ways off for me so hopefully something cool will come out before it's time to take the plunge.

For form 1'ing an sbr does anybody here do their own prints? how hard/easy is it? Also do you guys actually mail out the CLEO copy to you're local CLEO? Or just ignore it?

Well, I'm considering on asking him wtf happened to the other two, but considering that the two that were there were carefully threaded into the rail, I'm assuming he didn't forget them but he either never had them and neglected to say, or lost them and neglected to say, rather than just forgot to include them. I checked and they're not available anywhere online, so I'm gonna be searching bins at the fucking hardware store for something that will work. Overall though I really like the URX3.1 so far. I've shot with a few on SBRs but never the long version.

They will drop a bomb on your ass from miles away. They used a robot with explosives to take out a BLM nigger who got too uppity and they didn't care about leveling and an entire building to get one monkey. What do you think they'll do to "le Nazi tramp soporter" innawoods who has zero media backing and universal hate across media, academia, and politics? The only reason the Taliban we're successful is because A: The USA didn't push to the hardest extent it possibly could and B: The Taliban are a hardy bunch born into a life of tribal warfare and death. With an unquestionable belief that if they die for Allah they get rewarded with insane amounts of pussy.

Here in the USA we have weak men who look like they can barely hold up their gear, who have probably never even been in a fist fight their entire lives, who's entire personality is derived from (((video games))) and (((movies))) they grew up watching as kids. If you really truly cared about fighting the enemy, whoever you think that is, you'd know that precision/hunting rifles, assassinations, IEDs, etc is the way to go. But yeah go ahead and call me a fed for literally stating the best way to fight the fed while you want us in an open field playing soldier against next gen thermal and night vision where guided weaponry can turn us into swiss cheese.

The 1x on an elcan or at least my elcan absolutely sucks ass and there is no way around it but not for the reasons you'd think. I can deal with the eye box and eye relief with absolutely no problem but the 6 MOA dot and the parallax is horrific. If I'm not looking at it dead center my target looks like a shotgun blast at 50yds. If I turn off the red dot and just use the etched reticle it's fine. In 4x with red dot on I can shoot sub MOA groups all day long. I'm trying to narrow down my options here.
