Why were turn of the centurymuzzleloaders so long that it made it harder and slower to load, or was it just to keep bayonets longer. sight radius was not a issue because most didn't have any. black powder burn rates were only so bad that most 2 band musket were a happy medium. Also why did this transition to early somkless when most people couldn't shoot with a dam anyway to use the longer sight radius.
>>48424783>turn of the century muzzleloadersWhich century are you talking about?
>>48423699Is that a GLAWK??
>>48424783Muzzle loaders had long barrels because black powder is not very powerful and you need a lot of barrel to contain the combustion of the charge. If you had a shorter barrel, much of the powder would end up burning outside of the barrel.Later developments like prismatic and compressed black powder allowed for shorter barrels but really short barrels didn't become veasible until smokeless powder
>>48424783Black powder burns more slowly than smokeless so you get full power after about 4 feet of barrel. Fouling and rate of fire was also an issue so bayonet charges were still viable. Hell, it was only barbed wire that finally made the bayonet charge impractical.
