Crimson Trace series 5 1-8x unboxing, initial impressions, in order:BIG, it's my first 34mm tube, so yeah. Add big turrets and batt compartment and huge ocular and it's BIG.A bit heavy, well it's big.A wee touch of pin cushioning noticed at the lower powers, esp 1x. This disappears at magnification. 1st focal plane, I'll get used to it.Mil dot, I'll adapt decades of second focal plane experience. Illumination, almost non existent in daylight at low range mag.Illumination at high range, acceptable in daylight.Eye box, hard to judge free hand, Burris 34mm QD PEPR on backorder, of course! May switch to the Steiner or Warne.Intended use, AR15 SBR, should be awesome for the $1600 50% off == $800. Is it worth $1600? Nope, not to me yet.
Is a PTR a bad choice for my first .308 rifle?
>>48424036Nope. Be prepared for the ammo investment to equal the cost of the rifle.
>>48423819Yeah they're hefty >>48424036Good choiceIf railed
>>48424036An excellent choice. Make sure you get one with a rail.

Thanks to the anons who helped me with getting the pieces to finish out my PTR.
Anyone with experience on the NX8? Reviews seem lackluster mostly due to the eye box, but at 1k less than the atacr it seems like a good way to go if there aren't any issues
>>48423533Lurker fren here From a general perspective how hard is a FAL to build? I personally don’t have any experience building rifles, but my grandpa does. He is aging and I’m hoping to do something like that with him before he’s gone forever. Thanks frens

From a different thread:Yo so uh I want to thank this post for saving me from being a total faggot during this coming biden eraI'm like you know I never really had guns my life has been unstable and resultingly I have been unstable so although I've had a revolver for a while I've never really had any rifles but biden says>>last call, folksAnd so now I'm a panic buyer. So far I've picked up a Glock, a draco, and I'm paying on an ak. My appreciation for the ak is as follows:>>Increased penetration over 5.56Up until yesterday I understood the .308 to be a hunting cartridge and a sniping cartridge but now I understand it to be a battle cartridge. I'm picking up pic related on my way to work tomorrow. So on my biden shopping list is a psl. I understand it to have an effective range of 950 meters. I understand this gun to have a range of 400 meters, as do a lot of other .308s I look at. Will someone tell me in what way this is considered a sniping cartridge?
>>48425041Honestly I could go either way, but somehow I ended up with a ton more of fal mags>>48425057The duality of man
>>48425291>So on my biden shopping list is a psl.check out the Vepr in x54r or .308 instead, it's all around better
>>48425291PSL is a terrible gun for the $2000 they cost now unless you're a hard Romanian or AK collector. They're not particularly accurate, and the pencil barrel rapidly heats up as you shoot and opens your groups up even more. The other anon is 100% right, a vepr in 54r or 308 will be a significantly better gun. I'd also add a Yugo M76 in 8mm to the list of things better than a PSL. However, if you want an accurate long range semi auto rifle, I would 100% go with an AR10 build over an AK any day of the week. It'll cost less, mags are cheaper, optics are going to mount easier and cheaper, and it'll be more accurate and easier to find. I'd only go for the AKs if you're actually interested in AKs. I think AKs are way cooler than ARs, but the AR is 100% more practical.

Better than a 180gr 308 will.Yeah a PSL can send a round to 950y but you're kidding yourself if you think you'll be able to hit a man sized target with it. Maybe in perfect conditions with a $1k+ scope, $200 rings, $300 bipod, a $600 kestrel, and a $900 range finder binos you could 1 shot it.After 750y even a 5mph cross wind is going to rekt you. >>48425291>Will someone tell me in what way this is considered a sniping cartridge?.308 out of a quality bolt action rifle get good ranges and accuracy. .308 out of a battle rifle loses some accuracy because of how the riles are designed to mitigate the gas and load the next round. All the best long distance sniper rifles are Bolt Action, magazine fed semi auto cannot reach that level of accuracy or distance. Not knocking manufacturers, it's just how physics works. PTRs - thoughts on the polymer lower vs metal? I want the bull barrel of the 102, but I prefer the metal lower that comes with other models since you can change the grip out.
>>48424786So far, very easy. I'm building an Izzy from a parts kit, and (hopefully) my barrel should be here this week. If you're building from a parts kit that comes with a barrel that already has a gas block fitted, it is legitimately the easiest thing imaginable; you only really need a hammer (preferably plastic and filled with shot, so you don't fuck up the finish on the receiver), flathead screw driver, level, vise, and an adjustable wrench or a https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNckPmFKNRoThis guy gives a very in-depth explanation of how to build both inch pattern and metric pattern guns, though I think he makes it look harder than it is. He's also a crossdressing weeb brony, so very /k/. The locking shoulders don't need to be pressed in; you can hammer them in. Also, you can make ghetto go/no go headspace gauges by taking two .308/7.62x51 bullets and putting a piece of tape on the back of one cartridge, which will thus create a no-go gauge. If you buy an Israeli parts kit and decide to fit the gas block assembly yourself, it's going to be harder. You're going to have to drill three holes in the barrel, which is kind of annoying. I haven't done this yet, but I hopefully will soon.
>>48433382I have both, polymer is more comfy imo but steel is classic
>>48432828dont be a faggot, get both. No they wont get cheaper they have been pricey forever because they are niche
Hey I'm looking for ammo on my PTR 91. I saw some Armscor 7.62x51 m80 stuff and I'm wondering if it'll work in it. I heard from somewhere PTRs can be a little picky about ammo brands. For context my rifle was made in January of this year. I think PTR made some fixes but I'm not sure.
>>48433652PTR is the opposite of picky for ammo. They ear anything
>>48433652My PTR eats garbage Tula just fine. As long as the ammo itself isn't deffective, it'll run.

>>48430143That's kind of the whole point of the roller delayed mechanism of the g3 platform though.A good g3 can hang quite well with bolt rifles out to 600 yards+ if you have a decent scope.1000+ yards isn't really .308 territory, of course you can get some hits, but low velocity holds you back when running bullets with decent bc.Would love a good automatic in .30-06, that would make more sense.
>>48434631No. It is not
>>48433652Not gas operated, as long as the loads are somewhat hot, it will eat it.
>>48432936It looks vile. It's inferior in every way to the wood or the thin. I'd even rather have a fucking MLOK handguard than the wide.
>>48432943>8mm Mauser is underrated but overpowered as a cartridge. How is any cartridge "overpowered" when there is no such thing? Is it "overpowered" for a paper target or an African lion? Is it "overpowered" for a communist or any enemy? The term is misused unless applied to a use. But they all get tested before they leave the factory. I'd say a solid 9/10 malfunctions are due to shitty magazines. If you have any issues during or after the "break in period," mark the magazines and test them again to see if it's a feeding lip or spring/follower issue.

>>48439791Got it thanks fren
>>48439791>This is the wrong way (but easiest). Its wrong because if done incorrectly can bend your receiver and introduces add'l wearI can't find a video of this for the life of me so I will just write it for you.- Reassemble the bolt head on the bolt carrier- Rotate it back to how it should be inside of your receiver- In reverse, try to insert it back into your receiver. It won't go in without force- Apply force to the bolt to force it inside of the receiver. This force will depress the rollers so that they unlock- When they've unlocked, remove the reversed bolt carrier from the receiver and put it in normally. It should go in just fineYou can see why this isn't the correct way to do it but it *does* work. Just be careful. I was able to do it with minimal force which I recommend.

How hard is it to build a CETME off of a PTR receiver?
>>48443766CETME C parts kit*
>>48443766Century started making theirs from PTR-supplied receivers, I imagine it's not much different than a non-PTR one
>>48443786Is it just a matter of screwing things into place or would it involve machinery of some sort?
>>48443546>>48443766Keep in mind they're cheap because they're hard to do. Not *the* hardest but you'll need intermediate machining and welding skills. >>48443681 that link is the go-to for old info that's still relevant.
>>48440245when i first bought pro mags they refused to even fit in the m1a, i left them sitting in the carrying bag for months with 3 springfield armory mags, and somehow that seemed to be the trick, i took them out of the bag and the promags worked as good as SA or checkmate, very bizzarei suspect the mags heard me talking about shooting them in the woods if they didnt work
>>48443815There's a good amount of machinery that goes into it. You need a 12-ton press, welding gear, and some form of bending jig [there are 3D printed ones if that's a thing you can do] at the absolute barest minimum. Plus other stuff for demilling the parts kit and cleaning it all up
>>48423533I asked a few threads ago but I'm going to rehash it since I'm going shooting Friday, and want to test the CETME again. My cetme (one in OP pic actually) started having problems a while back. I always shot dirty tula through it, but then a buddy wanted to shoot it and used some brass ammo. Since then it has occasionally had an issue where it struggles to feed from the magazine, and then it will get the round stuck 90% of the way in the chamber, completely locked up to the point where I have to take a hammer or block of wood to the charging handle to get it to eject. I honestly don't remember if I cleaned the chamber and tested it, but I've currently got it disassembled on my bench scrubbing the chamber with a .45 cal brush and washing it with hoppes. What else can I do to mitigate the chances of this happening again? I just triple checked bolt gap and its on the low end of in spec. Like .14mm or something. Spec is .1-.5mm. Would it still be a good idea to put some larger rollers in it?

>>48436590Because the regular G3 is stamped, average accuracy isn't all that, there are lemons, but there's also gold.I've had 3 or 4 during my service, accuracy varied wildly between them, one shot very true, could punch steel at 500 meters with it no problem.People shoot them in competitions here in Norway, and some get VERY good accuracy out of them. The mecahnism is very nice for building a highly accurate automatic rifle, but that only work when tolerances are right, I would never buy one without shooting it first.
>>48436590Also, PSG1 is mostly a meme gun, MSG90 is the one you would really want for accuracy.PSG1 is a collector's gun.
>>48435281Assumed you were Norwegian due to filename and the fact you have an "F" on your selector.Only somewhat pimped AG3s I have seen have been with the Telemark Battalion.
>>48440309>>48441354You really should tap and thread it for a rail, not weld it on.It will twist due to the heat during welding, no way to completely avoid it.Might not really matter much, but there's zero reson to weld over tap and thread, unless you really want to use your scope as the head of your nato sledgehammer when breaking rocks in quarry or something.

>>48446699What? If the gas port is shut off, rifle won't cycle. BCG remains in locked position for all I know. Would that theoretically improve accuracy? Someone with a FAL needs to answer this.
>>48446718once the bullet leaves the casing it doesnt matter what happens to the gun as long as the barrel doesnt lose pressure or blow the case out. Technically maybe the gas piston on a piston driven rifle moving back could cause a tiny bit of barrel whip but by the time that happens the bullet is probably already out of the barrel. Thats my laymans understanding of it though, Ive never actually taken my rifle to the range and done groups with and without my gas system on.

>>48446865Thanks
>>48446769How I thought of it was the brass makes a gas seal, and the benefit of a bolt action is the fact that the rifle doesn't begin the cycling process until after the powder is 100% burned, and burning in one direction. I may be autistic, and thinking too much about this. Yes anon I understand that the bullet leaves the barrel before the shooter even feels the recoil, but the BCG begins the cycling process instantaneously, which would break that gas seal. This would probably affect slow burning, Magnum powders more than anything desu.
