I don't think anyone was really serious about waifuism. A lot of people just did it to fit in. In 2010 I recall a lot of /jp/ers going to that formspring social network and eloping with 3D women. I think a /jp/er ended up dating Jennabee. I recall a few other anons hooking up with other girls on deviantart during that time. When given the chance to date a 3D girl /jp/ers gave in. I know of at least 3 anonymous /jp/ers that hooked up and 2 namefags. One of which was that "currybutt" namefag if you remember him. This was 12 years ago so it's kinda pathetic that I remember some of this stuff and all of the relationship drama.

This is our real theme song. The song and lyrics were originally created by a fully anonymous /jp/er. He never returned and took credit for it. The animation and video was created by Jennabee who is a DA girl who only browsed 4chan a handful of times. /jp/ers immediately started stalking them and they were never heard from again. Inviting an even larger scale to the site is frankly not possible. The site already has problems with funding as is because it's both too big and too controversial to get payment via most normal means.
To get an even bigger version of the site going, you'd need more mods, more efficient techniques to punish ban evasion and a host of things that could in the end make the site less attractive than it already is.
Maybe if 4chan dies one day and its spiritual successor circumvents these problems, maybe adopting what Futaba does by allowing user-moderated threads ontop of moderators existing.

Gatekeeping is inherently abnormal behavior. Most people spend their weekends relaxing or out with their friends. All of the other imageboards I liked have died out over time. Sadly, they never seem to last that long.

Back in the late 00's there were a lot of niche boards all over the place with lots of different subjects. It felt very experimental and it was pretty nice. The one I miss most is wakachan. It had comfy boards, even if it wasn't exactly a unified community by its nature as a confederation of several boards. For those days where you just wanted to look at pictures though, it was great.

And this is not an appeal to tradition fallacy, "normal" implies norm and what society accepts is normal. Even modern human societies gatekeep.

I already know programming, I am okayish at C, Ruby and I frequently do shellscripting, all my computers run GNU/Linux as well. Anything that is "consumption", and not "production" is unproductive, watching TV is unproductive. Watching YouTube is unproductive. Reading manga is unproductive. Reading fiction is unproductive. Reading the news is unproductive. Playing videogames with friends is unproductive.
However doing unproductive stuff here and there is good, under my philosophy it's all about keeping balance, to be clear balance is not necessarily a 50-50, but rather the "right" spot.

No I won't. Once again, I've met my best friends here. I wouldn't be who I am today without them. Although I don't use the website that often as I once did (1 hour per day at worst, usually just 30 minutes or less, these days I only check the jay due to the website's state). I've got to witness some shenanigans that made me laugh and distract myself for a while, spending time here on April's fools is usually also fun.
