There's Akiya banks for buying abandoned property. The prices and selection aren't quite as good as they were like 3 years ago. From what I can tell though a lot of municipalities don't list stuff online so you have to go there, and from what I knowfrom my time in rural Japan is that basically everything is abandoned. If you're ambitious you could probably get a good deal.The government even subsidizes repairs in some places.
