This is retarded.
>>
>>38108503
It's funny that the spreadsheet keeps getting updated but their website hasn't had a post on it in over 4 years.
>>
Is Dohna Dohna worth pirating
>>
>>38108981
Gameplay is shit, but it's worth it for the art.
>>
>>38108981
Yeah it's pretty cute and you can just cheat the gameplay stuff. Definitely not worth a purchase though.
>>
>>38108994
Yeah, the art looks slick as hell. Some of the best I've seen Alicesoft put out
>>38109011
I'd consider buying it on a massive sale if literally anyone (aka MangaGamer, JAST, even Alicesoft themselves) but Johren sold it and it didn't have shitty DRM. Denuvo on VNs, are you fucking kidding me? I'm not gonna pay to download Denuvo when I can just pirate it and not have to deal with that shit. Also, isn't Johren a shitty combo of DMM and Nutaku?
>>
>>38109118
I'd buy it for full price if it was uncensored and DRM free, the art is fantastic but it's ruined by mosaics.
>>
>>38109131
I don't give a single shit about mosaics. I want fun gameplay, an engaging story, a good TL & art, and nice h-scenes. Half the time the artist doesn't draw anything under the mosaics, and even when they do the result makes me wonder if the artist has ever seen a real penis of vagina. Redraws tend to look like shit, too.
>>
>>38109171
>I don't give a single shit about mosaics
Look at I Walk Among Zombies or Purplesoft titles and say that again. Some artists do an absolutely fantastic job, others literally draw nothing. The artist behind Dohna Dohna does fantastic work which is the real shame to it being censored. Waffle's artist does some pretty fucking good work too.
>>
>>38109171
And yes, they 100% use Denuvo. The company that makes Denuvo was bragging about partnering with DMM on their shitty site
https://irdeto.com/news/dmm-games-llc-enlists-denuvo-to-protect-new-releases/
>>
>>38109202
If it actually looks good uncensored, that's a plus, but it's not a deciding factor for me on buying something. If I had to choose between a really good TL or removed mosaics, I'd choose the TL.
>>
>>38109305
>If I had to choose between a really good TL or removed mosaics, I'd choose the TL.
Not very smart of you given that most VN's end up getting a fan rewrite by an anon if the translation is bad which ends up being better than a good official translation. Pretty much every Sekai Project ends up getting a fan rewrite and some NN titles do as well.
>>
>>38109374
I wouldn't consider the average Sekai or NN TL to be a good TL. I know some of the people that founded NN, they're fucking idiots. I'm sure they know JP, they're just cringe and bad with English

You need to be online to authenticate the title and then need to reauthenticate the title every 2 weeks. If you change your drive name or change out a part on your PC without deactivating the license beforehand, you'll lose an authenticate. If you do that 3 times you're locked out of the title you bought and Johren will not restore authenticates even if you contact support. The storefront is also shit and wont accept many types of debit or credit cards. They also have a 0 refund policy. They will not refund a purchase under any circumstance.

Plus all their shit is censored with mosaics and some of their titles have additional unmentioned censorship.
>>
>>38110357

Seems like Shiravune is putting more of their titles on Steam, maybe they figured out Johren is a train wreck and hurts them a lot.

Why do they think people will buy from them if they're shit in every single aspect? Their site even LOOKS shady. It's real easy to open up nyaa rather than deal with this shit, and there's nothing they can do to stop that from happening.
Is it just stupid JP business execs that know nothing about western markets? I know not offering any refunds for any reason is illegal in a lot of European countries
>>

Meru is apparently translating a BL VN for JAST Blue.
>>
>>38110802
>I know not offering any refunds for any reason is illegal in a lot of European countries
They don't care, they're a japanese company with a japanese store entirely hosted in japan.
>>
>>38110523
Holy Maiden didn't have mosaics.
>>
>>38111051
All their other stuff did though. Also they weren't very smart about Holy Maiden in general. They pick up the one not-loli title from a loli focused developer and then when people ask about seeing other titles from that developer Meru responds with
>We will not be licensing any other titles from this developer
Mind you this is MONTHS before the english translation is released. I appreciate the honesty but you are really stabbing yourself in the foot if you say
>The sales of this title has no impact on getting more titles from this developer
>>
>>38111127
They've only done Lamunation, Holy Maiden and some PS4 games so far.
I really don't blame them for not wanting to touch their other stuff though. It's not like any other English translated loli focused VNs sold well or better than anything else in the past, plus you have the very, very high chance of Steam banning it making you lose money on it anyway. It makes more financial sense to pick up literally anything else over something that focuses on lolis. At the very least they were honest and upfront about those being a no-go.
>>
One of the JAST staff confirmed more Ueda Metawo is coming.

What fantasy world did you come from?
>>
>>38111237
Maitetsu bombed because Sekai Project fucked up the release with their censorship, which lolicons obviously refuse to tolerate. And yet Maitetsu still managed to get on Steam, so everyone else has no excuse.
>>
>>38112287
It's not that easy to get on Steam anymore. Maitetsu came out back in 2018. In 2019 Onikiss and Yotsunoha from Sol Press both got Steam bans and heavily featured lolis. Valve are even heavier handed now in their bans than they were back then.
That's why we had things like Evenicle 1 and Kara no Shoujo 1 get on Steam with no problems back in 2018, but their sequels Evenicle 2 and Kara no Shoujo 2 both got bans when they submitted them later even though KnS2 was tamer than the original and Evenicle 2's Steam version was gutted from the Japanese original and still got a ban anyway.
>>
>>38112130
Yeah, Gore Screaming Show, Minidead Blood, and Gun Katana are all probably too old.
>>
>>38112387
Maitetsu Last Run was added to Steam in late 2020.
>>
>>38112521
In chinese though. Pretty sure it's ironically easier to get a VN through the chinese approval team than it is the english.
>>
>>38112521
The problem with Steam is they are horribly inconsistent and won't outright tell you what is or isn't allowed. There are plenty of examples of things tamer than Maitetsu getting banned, or sometimes even things without an R18 version in existence being banned too. There's also things that make it on there that make you wonder how they slipped through. That's the real problem here. All Valve will tell you is that after review they decided your game featured exploitation of minors with no elaboration and that you can not resubmit that game even with changes ever again. One strike and you're out.
You want more companies to start bringing stuff over with lolis then great. But first you'll need to convince Valve to start giving explicit rules on what is or isn't allowed so companies aren't scared shitless to license those things in the first place, then convince people that enjoy lolis to actually buy those VNs in the first place to show support. As it stands now, licensing anything with lolis, little girls, or characters in school uniforms means you're more likely to hit that invisible "child exploitation" minefield in the Steam approval process and since so much of all VN sales are on Steam that means hitting that minefield dooms you to lose money.
>>
>>38112594
I would rather just have companies realise that Steam isn't the only storefront that exists in the world and that trying to sell censored lolige to the mass market is a retarded idea to begin with. Sekai Project going to the lengths they did to sanitise Maitetsu's Steam release didn't do anything to help it sell to the normalfag market because the normalfag market isn't interested in lolis to begin with, SFW or not.
Every company wants to replicate SP's lightning in a bottle success with Nekopara instead of understanding that was a fluke and instead appealing to their niche audience by delivering a competently handled release that the niche audience is willing to repeatedly support.
>>
>>38112625
>I would rather just have companies realise that Steam isn't the only storefront that exists
>Sekai Project going to the lengths they did to sanitise Maitetsu's Steam release didn't do anything to help it sell to the normalfag market because the normalfag market isn't interested in lolis to begin with, SFW or not.
I agree completely with this. The problem is that VN readers and VN buyfags that are willing to pay for their VNs are two very different groups, and of the VN buyfags it seems they are way more willing to pay if a VN makes it on to Steam instead of buying directly from a publisher's own storefront. That's why it seems everyone is so willing to gut, cut or otherwise strip their releases of content or h-scenes just for the chance to make it on to Steam since that's where the vast majority of their sales are coming from. If you want things to start getting better you need to convince those people that are buying from Steam to move over to those third party stores instead.
This isn't those companies trying to emulate Sekai's once in a lifetime lighting in a bottle with Nekopara either. Steam is such a huge majority of sales it will always continue to be pushed first because that's where the money is for the average VN release. The push for Steam isn't to try and strike it big with their releases, it's to make sure they're breaking even on their licenses.
>>
>>38112042
Give me GSS and Mindead Blood.
>>
>>38112745
>The push for Steam isn't to try and strike it big with their releases, it's to make sure they're breaking even on their licenses.
I don't know why people keep making this argument as though companies weren't already breaking even with eroge localisations for 20+ years before Steam became an option.
>>
>>38112854
You gotta remember anon. Companies don't just want money, they want ALL the money. Hence why Alicesoft split from Mangagamer.
>>
>>38112625
I've read the pastebin that was posted in the last thread from Laplacian director. He writes there that while Steam is not the only platform, it's the biggest and sales on other platforms are on average 90% lower than what a maker could expect to get on Steam. That might be not enough to even recoup the cost of translation according to him.

The only way this shit gets resolved is if Steam becomes more desensitized towards complaints by shitty troll groups which complain about content they don't like. Instead they try to preempt controversy by self-censoring but that only gives red meat to people who want to control what other people enjoy.

There was a twitter thread a week or so ago about how book publishers and game publishers in Japan have started to ignore feminist trolls and that's working: https://twitter.com/Ichiro_leadoff/status/1473647556102332420
If only Steam was smart enough to understand that.
>>
>>
>>38112901
I would agree on ignoring Feminist trolls. A lot of those accounts are bots anyways and are designed to get a response out of you, distractions and not focusing on the market that is buying your product. For now I would try to put it on JAST and MG stores even GOG as they seem to realize how to ignore a small yet loud minority. Eventually Steam will pivot once they realize no Japanese Hentai companies are having games on their platform and the output is less, they will change their rules much like they did many times before.
>>
>>38112854
The types of licenses and volume of releases from official companies 20 years ago compared to today is night and day.
>>
>>38112392
I'd guess Necroslave and Puppet Master. It's short and hardly has any voices.
https://vndb.org/v3560

Sayoko is also fairly short. I believe it works as a standalone and you don't need to play Yami no Koe first.
https://vndb.org/v6019

They also mentioned a DeadΩAegis fandisk was announced last week but I can't find it mentioned online. They might have licensed that already and be trying for a simul release.
>>
>>38112952
Based Laplacian. The original version still exists and there are high effort and low effort methods to read it, no need to depend on a watered down version for the west.
>>
>>38112745
> the VN buyfags it seems they are way more willing to pay if a VN makes it on to Steam instead of buying directly from a publisher's own storefront.
I would say this is half true. I think it's because Steam basically caused people to think they would not censor and therefore stayed on the platform. For me i only recently made an account on JAST and MG because i am tired of trying to download a Steam game only to find out i need to go off site and find the patch then download it and play it. When i could just create an account on those storefronts, buy it uncensored, then play it normally. I only wish in the future Steam would just allow a 18+ patch DLC thing to uncensor their games, but because they cater to the loud minority we probably will be getting these really mixed releases overall.
>>
>>38112878
How did that work out? I am sure they feel stupid right now and realize they are fucked because Steam just wants money, not ALL the money lol.
>>
>>38113721
I don't think it's just that. Modern coomsoomers seem to be completely averse to having games that simply work out of the box by double clicking their executables/shortcuts.
Instead, they need a fucking LAUNCHER to take care of... opening their games. For fuck's sake.
>>
>>38113811
I guess they need launcher to deal with updates, patches, etc. People are to lazy to check the official site.
>>
>>38113819
It's not like VNs have that all the time. JP original versions tend to have a 1.01 on day one and maybe a few other bug/script fixes later.
And updates can be installed with a simple executable as well, it's not rocket science.
Coddling the user with fisher-price tier UI is ruining product design for computers.
>>
>>38113811
I think it's the convenience factor like >>38113819 and that is something Steam has above other platforms. Even emulators use this as a quick button press to allow updating software to download off site.
>>
>>38113839
Not that anon but even though i do agree. You do have to realize most consumers are idiots by design. The fact they even needed a cell phone to know how to access social media or to do other things kind of proves how dumb they are overall.
>>
>>38113878
There's a reason customer support lines make sure the product is plugged in as a first step. People staggeringly stupid
>>
>>38113878
The worst thing of it is that your average VN potential consumer, most likely:
>Knows about dumb translations and their shitty quality
>Knows about Japan and basic cultural elements from it
>Knows their way around a computer to at least unzip and copypaste files from a fantranslation
>Hates DRM
So they would perfectly be able to buy, download and play a VN from something that isn't fucking Steam.

Yet, they cater to a target that wouldn't even consume their product in the first place: Normies don't give a shit about VNs. Nekopara was an exception, and it's not just a VN anyway - it's a bigger beast.
>>
>>38114086
The problem is that at least in the Western market people who know their way around computer are much more likely to pirate in the first place.
There is no peer pressure to buy like in the Japanese otaku market. There are almost no hardcore buyers who get a particular release for a tokuten, etc.

Basically relative normies and impulsive random buyers is where money are in the Western market and those buyers are using Steam pretty much exclusively. No Steam release pretty much means no impulsive buyers and that instantly cuts revenue to a very low point.
>>
>>38114164
You got me there.
It doesn't help that it's mainly digital versions over here and if there's a physical, it takes eons to show up and pales in comparison to the JP equivalents.
>>
>>38114236
No second hand market also has negative impact on introducing new people too. In Japan second-hand stores often enough play important rule of exposing moderately interested people to older games at quite low prices.
Digital deals might play similar role but it's not the same.
>>
>>38114164
I would agree on this. Piracy is usually because people can not afford it or would like to try it before they buy it. The normals market is wholly catered to Harem, Romcom, Yuri, Otome, Slice of life. The impulsive buyers I would argue is more of the gameplay market with some VN elements who care more about the Art, Music and Gameplay mechanics than anything else. I think VN studios would need to reorient themselves to try and create two sets of markets one for Eroge(think the uncensored places like JAST and MG) and the other for Lewd(Steam) but nothing really sex related or would have to have implied sex.
>>
>>38114358
If Steam continues to tolerate sale or distribution of separate adult patches on other platforms, it might be a good idea for localized eroge distributors to make some sort of collective investment into something more convenient than a bunch of separate stores with patches, maybe in collaboration with something like DLsite as they are working on localized markets nowadays anyway.
That way Lewd category could also work for integration with Eroge.
>>
>>38113743

Pretty great actually since DMM bought the western rights to all their non-rance titles and now they don't have to do shit while raking in fucktons of DMM cash even if their titles sell 0 copies.

>>
>>38114491
Yeah that's something i think we can agree upon. It's a common problem every eroge company is facing right now and i think the solution would be one place like DLsite. It might also help if games kind of mentioned in some way that the game is censored and needs to be patched for the full version so as to not spread confusion to those that think they are playing the full game when they are not.

Little Busters would be the obvious choice since it's the next (good) game Key made. There's also a /vn/ general over on /vg/ for discussing translated VNs if you just want to see what other people are playing. Right now Nine, Muramasa, WA2, and Mashimaro are very popular.

It's passable. If you've ever watched an anime with the kind of fansubs they used to have back in the day, you'll be fine. It's a bit on the stiff side and frankly would have benefited from just a bit more editing, but there's nothing particularly outrageous... except this.

What's your ideal translation for this?

Original line (after receiving answers to an upcoming test in advance from her):
> 花子様!

There's the obvious "just keep the honorific" and if the reader is a weeb they will obviously get it if you type "Hanako-sama!"

But if the reader isn't a weeb I'm not sure what you do. "Thank you so much!"/"I'm not worthy!" express the gratitude and elevation but aren't very good on a literal scale. The meme slang translation is "Queen!"/"You're [a/my] Queen!" which has similar connotation but obviously that's not actually what sama means.

And then there's the problem that if it's a voiced line in a VN the reader will hear "Hanako-sama!" and weeb readers might not like less literal or honorific-dropping translations.

What do you think is best?
>>
>>38181666
>But if the reader isn't a weeb
If they're reading VNs, they're a weeb.

No idea why people insist on removing honorifcs. I have NEVER seen anyone complain about a translation they're reading containing honorifics.
>>
>>38181666
what kind of person reads visual novels but doesn't know what honorifics are?
>>
>>38181687
Yeah, I do personally think "Hanako-sama!" is how I would translate it for a VN fan-translation.

I'm just trying to see if there's any other good option that doesn't require all the background context. Maybe there isn't.
>>
>>38181666
Just keep the honorific, retard.
>>
>>38181687
It depends? I know what the honorifics mean, but I honestly prefer, if possible, when they're removed and the sentences are written with the honorific used in mind. No honorifics in an improper situation? Make them use less polite words or put some mild slang in there to show they're being rude. Overly polite? Use really wooden, formal English. I don't know why you anons need to see the Japanese terms transcribed to English, you already know it's there from the voice lines.
>>
Is the GOG version of Muramasa the 18+ one?
>>
>>38181687
>I have NEVER seen anyone complain about a translation they're reading containing honorifics.
Plenty of people whine about Persona doing it. Ironically, Persona 3 and 4 both went to the lengths of replacing various honorifics with more familiar ones for mass appeal, eg. Yukaricchi being changed to Yuka-tan.
On the other hand, no one cares about Yakuza doing it, especially now that they've separated the game into subtitles and dubtitles options.

>>38182073
>No honorifics in an improper situation? Make them use less polite words or put some mild slang in there to show they're being rude.
Now think for a second about what you would do if a character addresses another character without honorifics, and they only decide to talk about it annoying them after it's already been done for hours. If you write in the character suddenly being rude to give the other one something to complain about, you're changing the dialogue from a persistent niggle to a sudden irritation.
All you do with this shit is create problems for yourself for no reason.
>>
>>38176554
>They're worth the money they ask for them
Maybe if it was uncensored and DRM free. Something with mosaics isn't worth more than $4

It seems that johren.net (all ages titles only) can be accessed from China, but johren.games (the 18+ site, where most of their releases are) is blocked, according to my tests using Chinese proxies.
Now actually being able to buy from the site is a different story.
>>
>>38182089
Those are just suggestions. Obviously context would dictate how you'd do this, if it all. I don't necessarily think the best option is just romanizing something instead of actually translating it. People that insist that you do this come off like cringy Nihon #1 weeaboos.rt8v4
>>
>>38182200
Go ahead and provide a single reason to remove honorifics that isn't "I don't want to learn the meanings of a few dozen words that will be shared across thousands of pieces of media". As already said, you only create problems for yourself by doing so. You don't need to awkwardly write around honorifics all the time if you just don't remove them for no reason in the first place.
>>
>>38182232
Like I said, I already know them. What I don't like is the presumption that removing honorifics ruins the meaning of the sentence. Do you know what editors do, anon? Would you prefer The Witcher had random bits of Polish in it because the translator thought it read better IN ENGLISH that way?
>>
>>38182321
I don't think the problem is removing honorifics, the problem is removing honorifics when there's an important dynamic around them in the story that also isn't rewritten so now you either end up with a situation completely neutered because the translator decided to remove the entire the thing from existence rather than attempt to convey it in english or you end up with the scenario where they remove honorifics but don't remove conversations around it.
Examples for the latter being
>Hi Risa, I had a good time at the party last night
>Um.. You know, if you want to call me Risa, I wouldn't mind..
>Okay, I'll call you Risa then.
Where you'd have no fucking idea what's going on if you don't know japanese/know they removed honorifics because the heroine says the protagonist can call her the same he's been calling her for the entirety of the novel.

An example of them obliterating everything related to honorifics at the cost of a character would be Gurigura from Evenicle who lost an immense amount of characterization with the removal of honorifics because rather than localize her dynamic way of addressing people based on whether they're friends/family/strangers (an extremely important part of her character by the way) the translator instead made her call people the same thing the entire way through.

That's the problem with most american translations: they try to "adapt" the culture with localizing stuffs that shouldn't be. As an example changing character names, town names, regional meals for more well know meals, rewriting non-ethical dialogues (sexism, jokes about fags, lolis), etc...

Why are you using random words that can be translated as your Polish argument when you're making a comparison to Japanese words that can't be translated? Keikaku is obviously not part of this discussion. You wouldn't be arguing in bad faith now, would you?
>>
>>38182832
Personally, I don't think you should ever touch names. Calling onigiri rice balls is fine, as is just leaving them as onigiri, but the infamous jelly donut shit is dumb. Leave the cultural references alone unless they're so obscure western readers won't get them on average, and adapt stuff like kanji puns that are literally impossible to understand unless you know JP and kanji.
>>
>>38182875
It's almost like actively pissing on your customer base is a bad idea in niche markets where piracy is a very accessible alternative. Who would've guessed?
>>
>>38182954
I was talking in general. After all most big companies love to redically localize their stuff like Nintendo usually do; pokemon games localizations or removing gender spech or selection (usa version of Animal Crossing) would be an example.
>>
>>38182931
You're moving the goalposts. Honorifics can be translated, just not literally and in a 1:1 word sense. Character voice is a thing, and honorific usage should reflect on each character's voice. Not everything should be translated word by word, literally, 1:1. Doing this results in a shitty, unreadable mess.
>>
>>38182630
eh, anyone working in VNs is a bottom of the barrel translator, if they were any good they'd be earning much more in other fields of JP translation. they are paid appropriately for their skill level.
>>
>>38182975
>where piracy is a very accessible alternative
I think you mean
>Where piracy is almost always the more customer friendly alternative
Since you don't need to go hunting down restoration patches or fan-patches since most pirated releases tend to include all available patches whereas official releases often require you to navigate to some random third-party website and download stuff from there to get all of the content you paid for.

removing nihongo kotoba from an eigo honyaku is a kitte mo kirenai part of the translation process because that's literally what translation is about: removing words from the original language and replacing them with the new one. any nihongo word omae leaves in produces a mikansei translation even if omae really thinks that removing konna japanese word or anna japanese word produces an incalculable loss in meaning. comparing it to removing japanese clothes from a CG is utterly retarded.

Adding some (very light) variations in the speechs. Yes, isn't as easy to do as it seems but if you're a good translator (and not pressed with time) you could pull it. Yes, I know that this isn't 100% perfect accurate but is still better than leaving it as a plain/neutrished text.
If my memory isn't wrong even Yakuza did something like that.

What you're describing is literally accent localization.

I'm not sure why you're bringing that up. Usted/tù is the closest another language gets, that I know of, to JP honorifics. The fact that nobody peppers SP->EN TLs with mentions of either (unless they're literally switching to Spanish in the script) should clue you in to how leaving in parts of another language's structure is viewed by translators in general. Do you really think professional JP->EN translators that work for businesses translating speeches, statements and booklets leave in honorifics? Do you think the average English speaker even knows what the fuck onii-chan means?

You people can just admit that you like having the honorifics in. You don't have to be correct to like something being done a certain way. I like pickles on grilled cheese sandwiches. Is that how you traditionally make a grilled cheese? No. Should I demand everyone make grilled cheeses with pickles because I personally like them that way? No. I just eat my fucking sandwich and move on with my life. If I couldn't have pickles on my grilled cheese anymore, would I go on the internet and complain about it? No, I don't care enough to waste my time on that.

Witness the food analogy retard as he has all the pieces to understand that different approaches to translation with different target audiences have inherently different levels of accuracy, but still fails to actually grasp this concept.
>>
>>38183399
Yes, and that's not impossible to do. koestl handled Amane from Grisaia speaking in Kansai-ben by changing it to a southern-esque drawl, if I remember correctly. That properly conveyed to the reader that she wasn't speaking in "normal" or "standard" English.
>>
>>38183399
That's how usually decent translator localize "dialects".
>>38183411
>mixing ustedes/tu
Calling someone by tu/you is frowned in many countries unless you aren't close to the interlocutor. Also it seems that you're forgeting that internacionally there's 2 ways of translating to spanish (or viceversa); neutral (most used by latino) and spanish from spain (better flow but with some regional overlocalizations)
>>
>>38183452
Yes, and you weebs are not the target audience most of the time. Again, going by normal language translation standards, what you view as correct is wrong. Addressing someone as "sama" or "herr" or "señor" in English is a sign of respect for the other person's culture and language. It has nothing to do with the validity of translation methods. You don't use non-English words in proper English unless it's a loan word. Is it sometimes better to leave that stuff in if removing it is too confusing? Yes. Is it then correct to use them in English, even then? Objectively, no. Japanglish is not English.
>>
>>38183542
Not him but yes; manga, LN and VN audience love theses honorifics. Most of the hater are tourist/normalfags who find them alien and want them removed.
>>
>>38183499
I know the differences between usted and tú, I just grouped them together because they both mean "you". It's about familiarity (tú for well-known and casual, usted for meeting new people and politeness) and respecting one's betters or elders (always usted), which is relatively similar to how Japanese honorifics work. And yes, I do know that there are differences between Spain Spanish and Latin American Spanish.
>>
>>38183627
I'll correct your in some point; you can't speak to the elders by "tu" or either "ustedes." The former you should know why and the later because it looks to frivolous. The correct way would be calling them by their second name unless they allow to call them by the first. Adding to it sir/sra would be ideal if the spech is buisness-like.
>>
>>38181666
Anyone who knows about Japan and anime (i.e. VN target audience, normies don't play them) will at the very least know -san, -chan and -sama.
Leave it as it is.
>>

>>
>>38183837
Yes.
>>

Yes. Covid forced japs to be more open to the west (for some extra bucks) and now we're getting more VNs each year.
>>
>>38183452
>have inherently different levels of accuracy
The more Japanese you leave in, the more accurate it will be, at the expense of being more inaccessible (literally untranslated portions) or idiotic-sounding (unnatural literalist bricks). That does not make it inherently correct to leave in more Japanese. Actual translation does not work with accuracy uber alles.

>>38183474
>>38183499
I mean, yes, sure, but I'm responding to someone who said "I wouldn't localize typical regional accents" so it's really not clear what that person was trying to get at.
>>
>>38183716
Thanks, I made it to Spanish 3 in school but ended up forgetting a lot of it. So, you'd basically call your elders, by default, by their last names unless you know they want you to do otherwise? Sounds like it would get confusing at family gatherings.
>>
>>38183851
>>38183870

I saw Muv Luv getting a couple new sequels. The localization paid off huh?
>>
>>38183874
If you aren't close (or don't want) to you familiars then usually adding some status abbreviation to the first name would do the job.
As you see it's simil to english with the difference that they have more abbreviations, less pronouns due the entonations per se already can tell you the gender/diversity and the gramar structure is kinda reversed from english (same as in japanese).
But yeah, the spanish phrases are kinda... waaaay to long for my taste.
>>
No text, properly translated, will have parts of the source language in it, excluding loan words, names and locations in the target language. The point is to make it fully readable in the target language, not to leave vestigial bits of the source language in the script.

Look at this, specifically in the section about Thai
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Untranslatability#Register
Keeping that structure, or even literally translating the content, to preserve the context from the source language would come across as nonsense or Engrish. You don't break rules in the target language in order to preserve the meaning from the source language, unless the source language also broke a similar rule in its own language.

Just say "I'm a weeb and I like honorifics," it's pretty easy to admit.
>>
>>38184020
Sorry for the generic white person comparison, but like in Coco, where everyone calls Coco Mamá Coco?
>>
>>38184065
Not him but for kids the usual way would be to call her as Coco mama or by her first name, for adults that doesn't know her as Coco mother or second name plus honorific and for the ones who know her the later or first name.

I guess that all depends of the context and tl interpretation.

By the way, who the fuck is Coco?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that and you'd be in the know if you actually read some books

Moege doesn't need good translation, retard.

Remember how starting with 2 the AAA game series Assassin's Creed started leaving random words and phrases and titles in different languages throughout games that were otherwise presented in English, and how everyone threw a shitfit over this because it was butchering the English language?
Yeah, me neither.
>>
Frankly, this is embarrassing how we are arguing the same shit 10 years later we have argued this enough and are eternally going in circles. Just be satisfied with what you get as the ideal experience is impossible in translation. Frankly, what you.miss out on is nothing substantial. Some names that are In reference to what the text is already telling you in multiple ways. Even what the JOP crowd dubs as #Goodluckeops are mostly inconsequential little easter eggs. Only in truly JP culture centric games like Akairo or Itsusora this stuff is remotely relevant to get the plot.

Who's arguing about it being relevant to the plot? What it's relevant to is characterisation.
>>
>>38187142
Asairo*
>>
>>38187155
You can infer the characterization from attitude and choice of words. Honorifics are literally overt politeness but that doesn't mean without them that there is none. Some thIngs do not have to be mentioned to know they exist. Otherwise you would need to use every subject too, smth which is omitted in Japanese more than often. You could even do a little rewrite and establish relationships with smth like "They are always so polite with each other" or "We have always talked on an even level" or "the way she addresses me makes me feel subservient". expository sentences go a long way and JP uses them quite frequently too. You could also tell in exposition how age differences affect politeness levels.
>>
>>38187213
Good job completely missing possibly the most important sentence in that image:
>You could argue "well, that will be evident over time"-but the point is that in the source material it's evident immediately.
This also goes all the way back to >>38182232
>You don't need to awkwardly write around honorifics all the time if you just don't remove them for no reason in the first place.
>>
>>38186403
Are you an idiot? Moege especially need good translation because the language and its quirks are very important in producing and maintaining right emotions towards characters.
It's easy to translate cheap story twists if translator is not total moron. It's very hard to translate character interactions in a way that doesn't damage them at least somewhat.
>>
>>38187292
>right emotions towards characters
They all acts like a fucking robots in moege, they all pretty bland and generic and moege
> It's very hard to translate character interactions in a way that doesn't damage them at least somewhat.
This is not wa2 retard, there is nothing to damage to begin with
Only thing moege can and will lose is some random lame wordplay, but nothing special compared to actually good non-moege titles with decent writing
>>
Maybe if VNs weren't bloated pieces of shit with fucked pacing full of routes where the MC is stuck in bed I'd stop pirating them. If a shounen manga did this sorta shit the mangaka would be blacklisted
>>
>>38183916
The trilogy did, everything afterwards sold pretty poorly comparatively. I opted to pirate everything after the trilogy because they really fucked up the trilogy and were too cheap and lazy to unfuck it so I went back to pirating everything.
>>
>>38188115
yes shounen manga are famous for their lack of bloat and great pacing loooool
>>
>>38188345

>>
>>38188449
Shonen mangaka generally don't even know when their work is ending let alone how they'll be getting there.
>>
>>38188653
and VN writers deliberately drag shit out as much as possible so the VN can be marketed as being long
>>
>>38188720
And shonen mangaka stretch things out for years if not decades exclusively because the editors told them to.
I'm not saying pacing problems aren't a huge problem in VNs, I'm saying shonen manga as a positive comparison is silly.

>>38188115
>>38188720

They still have to keep things entertaining enough to actually keep people reading
>>38188975
I like VNs, but this is literally the whole reason VNs are dead. Why spend your time reading about a guy stuck in bed when you can play bing bing wahoo instead?
>>
>>38189003
You're arguing something completely different now, being entertaining isn't the same as having tight pacing. The biggest anime series are episodic for a reason.
