News
-The Spring 2021 Event is scheduled to commence after the 8th Anniversary. It will be a medium-scale event.
-The February ranking rewards have been distributed. The new equipment is the Type 42 Air Radar Kai-II.
-Mogamin has received her Kai-II and Kai-II Toku convertible remodels. Kai-II requires level 80, 1BP, 1AR, and 2 new air mats. Kai-II Toku also requires level 90. Kai-II Toku is able to carry midget subs in exchange for smaller plane slots.
-Equipment presets have been implemented. They work in a similar way as fleet presets. 3 are provided for free, and you can expand them further with Dock keys (2 per key).
-Yahagi has received her Kai-II and Kai-IIB convertible remodels. It requires level 88/90 and 1 BP and 1 AR.
-The Type 21 Air Radar Kai-II has been implemented. Several CAs have received small buffs.
-Through Akashi's arsenal it is now possible to improve T21 Air Radar to T21 Kai-II, Zuiun to Zuiun M12, Zuiun M12 to Zuiun M12 (634 AG) to Zuiun M12 (634 AG/Skilled). It is also possible to improve 16inch Mk.6 and upgrade it to 16inch Mk.6 mod.2.
-9 new quests have been implemented. Hinamatsuri quests have been removed.
-New and returning furniture has been implemented.
-As of the Feb 28, 2020 maintenance, due to the ongoing DDoS attacks, measures have been taken that requires players from certain countries to use a Japanese IP address to connect to the Login servers. After getting to the start screen it's possible to disconnect from the VPN and continue playing without it. If you still encounter connection issues try clearing your cache and changing your time zone to JST. These countermeasures are temporary as of right now. EN EO now bypasses the block. Another possible workaround is using https://github.com/Tibowl/KCCacheProxy
-The following ships will receive another remodel at some point in the future:
-->Kai-II: Mikuma, multiple Type A DDs, some "relatively small" carriers
-->Kai-II side remodel: The rest of the Kongou-class; Shigure (could be Kai-III)

>>34139362

>>
>>34139246
Well, there's Iowa. And at night South Dakota or North Carolina might stand a good chance.
>>
>>34139818
The biggest problem with American BBs are their relatively thin belts and lackcluster armor quality. KGV would be better choice in that quality but then you would be stuck with 14" peashooters mounted in turrets that require a virgin sacrifice every 30 minutes to work properly (ignoring this will end with you getting cursed by Fisher's ghost who is angered by the fact a British battleship from 30s isn't armed with 100cm cannons and making at least 50knots).
>>
>>34139873
Armor wouldn't be an issue at the range the Yamato would be able to reliably hit them. They can penetrate the Yamato too at that distance.
>>
>>34139873
You forget that Iowa has an inclined belt, unlike KGV. But that's not important. What is important, however, is that Iowa can outrun any other battleship and her guns are almost on par with Yamatos, plus her fire control is likely to be much better.
A fight between those two is really just about who can land a critical hit first.

>>34140095
Iowa would win a 1v1 because she'd use her better speed and effective range to kite the shit out of Yamato. But if both ships were in range of each other and it came to blows, Yamato might have a slight edge due to sheer shell mass, though any hits from either side would be devastating.
>>
>>34140686
Most battles were decided due to lucky hits.
For example, take Bismarck vs. Hood. And Bisko herself would have made it longer if her forward turrets and rangefinder wouldn't have been taken out early.
>>
>>34140727
So you're saying the Grand Old Lady would win because she has the highest luck stat?
>>
>>34140686
>Iowa would win a 1v1 because she'd use her better speed and effective range to kite the shit out of Yamato
Too bad that shit never happend because you can't hit anything at maximum range, even with radar. Closing in is something literally every BB at every time did when it could.
>>
>>34140686
Not really. Iowa isn't likely to hit anything at extreme ranges. While she is more likely to score the first hit, and she can certainly run away if she starts taking damage, Iowa can't guarantee a victory since she'll still have to get close enough for Yamato to start making accurate fire if she wants to deal a knockout blow.
>>
>>34140854
>>34140898
Yeah now that I think about it, the effective ranges of both ships isn't just something that the captains would inherently know and actively plan the fight around.
>>
>>34140854
The New Jersey's near misses on Nowaki at extreme range showed it's at least possible. A battleship would be an easier target to hit.

Hello Nurse!
>>
>>34139873
>armor quality
It wasn't a quality issue, it was a design issue. Burgers had 2 types of BB armour plate, class A and class B. Class B was similar to the British plate, just slightly worse, and was used in the turrets and barbettes where the armour was thickest. Class A plate was the problematic one. It was hardened much more than class B. This was done to increase the odds of shattering enemy shells. Okun goes into the reasons for this but it ended up being pointless since the Axis navies mostly kept using older AP shells instead of upgrading them. The effect was that class A was good when it was thin -- up to something like 200mm IIRC it was the best warship plate in the world -- but as it thickened further it started losing out to the softer armors. The energy of the incoming shell mattered too. The 310mm belt on the modern American BBs was probably better against smaller calibres like Kongou guns than the same thickness of class B would have been, but it was worse against anything bigger. We're talking about a fight with Yamato though so it's obviously a disadvantage.
>KGV would be better choice in that quality
That's debatable. KGV had a very good belt, one of the best in fact, but it wasn't particularly large, and her armour elsewhere doesn't give her an advantage. Her turret and barbette armour was poor. Even accounting for the slight advantage the British armour had from being a more advanced formula they were still far more vulnerable than what the South Dakota class had.
Ignoring the issues with the KGV's main battery, it's a choice between vulnerable engines and vulnerable guns. It's entirely up to luck which would end up being better in a real battle.

Ah yes the nation whose engines were constantly breaking down and we're port even without constant air attacks is "first-rate" according to sea monkey.

And of course that's not even getting into the fact that the KGVs will have to close in much further to damage any South Dakota/Iowa while the USN ships don't have to close in nearly as much to damage the KGVs.
>>
Iowa's have somewhat longer belts due to larger machinery spaces and being longer ships. In Sodaks case it's more than since the ships are so short
length wise comparedd to their contemporaries that the armor belt and deck ends up covering a lot more proportion wise in comparison to many of their contemporaries.

You don't close broadside-on. Belt armor doesn't cover the front of the ship. When one ship is closing on another it will be getting hit in the bow, deck, transverse bulkhead, and turrets.

>Yeah I guess if the KGVs were going against other ships of 14 inch caliber gun size you might have a point.

KGVs do have decent enough immunity zone against various15" guns used by various European axis navies though. The biggest problem is that bongs went with 2 x 4 + 1 x 2 14" design, a KGV with 3 x 3 15"/45 Mark II would easily had been the best European battleship of WW2.
>>
>>34148399
15" was the peak of battleship guns anyway. 16+ was just a sunk cost fallacy.
>>
>>34148371
Which is actually important depending on which ship we're talking about since KGV command crews operated exposed on the bridge. Iowas were operated out of their CICs. SD was a mix of conning tower and bridge I think, I don't think they had full CICs.
>>
>>34148399
>3 x 3 15"/45
They couldn't. They started building before the escalator clause was invoked.
And even so I'd still put the Littorios above them, at least if you ignore the quality control issues for their ammo.
>>
>>34148428
You only say that because most navies didn't have battleships bigger than 50000 tons. By the way the german H39 class is a pretty bad design for it's tonnage.
>>
>>34148442
Well that and such high muzzle velocity wears out the barrels really quick. Though a fresh barrel + good ammo means it's accurate as any other naval weapon.
>>
>>34148457
I hate myself for saying this but I think the #3 design for the Alsace class was the best and most reasonable planned but not built BB of all the EU navies.
>>
Yeah if 55000 or 60000 tons was the norm no one would think 15 inch guns other than the Littorio gun would be an adequate weapon.
>>
I haven't realised until opening this thread that today is Thursday and not Wednesday.
>>
>>34148481
To be fair they were mostly planning to stay in the Mediterranean so theoretically barrel replacements wouldn't be an issue. Given how Italian logistics worked out though...
>>
>>34148491
Personally I feel the Super Yamatos are a step in the wrong direction. While people go gaga for the 20.1 inch gun I think 6 guns for a battleship is too few. It doesn't help hullwise and armor wise, it's not much bigger or thicker than a Yamato because it was hard for Japan to build anything bigger than Yamato.
>>
>>34148517
One of the reasons the USN chose the super heavy shell route instead of high muzzle velocity for their new cruisers and battleships of the late 30s and 40s is probably due to the logistics issues in the Pacific. People forget that the it wasn't until very late in war that usn could just set up a temporary naval base/harbour anywhere.
>>
Big guns go boom.
>>
>>34148529
I agree. Realistically 51s aren't going to do anything 46s couldn't, the loss of volume of fire isn't worth it, especially considering the 46s are already firing at ranges they won't hit anything at.
>>
>>34148529
Hotels generally would had been better as with 3 quad turrets carrying modern 41cm (or 43cm if you really wanna have bigger guns than enemy) guns. But then again IJN's gun doctrine by that point had gone full overcompensation mode so that wouldn't had been acceptable for people in charge who needed the biggest guns possible to prove the world that they too had big guns between their legs.

>>
I wonder if the USN had figured out that the Yamatos we're 65000+ tons would they have changed the Montana design to an 8 18 inch gun ship? Or would they have drawn up something from scratch?
>>
>>34148611
I'd say go 4 3-gun turrets. Quads are asking for trouble.
>>
>>34148626
It's just teething issues bro. France made them work post war.
>>
>>34148613
Shell too light, needs to fire heavier round.
>>
>>34148560
>The 18"/48 cal Mark 1 was finished with an extra thick 16-inch liner, and the resulting weapon became the 16"/56 cal Mark 4. The gun was first tested at the Dahlgren proving grounds in 1927, with tests continuing into the 1930s. It fired a 2,100 lb (953 kg) AP shell at 3,000 ft/s (914 m/s) muzzle velocity, with a range of 49,383 yd (45,156 m) at 40° elevation. The high muzzle velocity of the prototype resulted in very short liner life of only 45 rounds, with a predicted liner life of 125 full charge rounds for the service weapon. During the early stages of the design process for the Iowa-class battleship, the gun was briefly considered for the main battery, but was rejected due to short liner life
tl;dr Yeah, seems like it
