Thanks. Yeah, you're right, the zoomed version doesn't look as good.
Pic related is the cropped version that I meant. It's a little bit brighter in the sky, giving a nice outline of the roof and some buildings behind it, and, obviously, it has a wider angle; I also think the wider spacing of the closer lanterns on the right, the lanterns that are visible in between the pillars, and the reflections being slightly less pronounced are what makes it a better overall photo. As a bonus, there's someone taking a photo of you taking your photo.

>Don’t forget making them write out a whole page of Kanji on arrival.

Have heard that but all our morning session had to do was write something on one of those prayer sticks (護摩 I think?), just went with the old 世界平和. Guess they randomise it each day or something, poor suckers that get the whole page copying...

Most temples, even the touristy ones, are 'active' though aren't they? I mean they still have monks and still have services and stuff yearly.

I personally stopped bothering to book tickets with my JR pass except when I was moving to a new hotel (and I made all of those reservations in one shot when I got the pass). Unless you're travelling during golden week, obon or new year's it's rarely difficult to get a seat in a non-reserved car

A lot of the time it's fine but better to be safe, especially trains in touristy regions when the journey is like 3 hours or something.

Plus on the Sakura you get the sweet ass wide seats that are basically green car class with a reservation.

Gotta admit I am pretty jelly of the rail pass, can’t get one on my visa.

And I had to do the whole sheet when I went, it was rough. I had just started learning Japanese when I went. I remember rushing trying to keep up with my girlfriend at the time and being covered in sweat and hurting at the end. When I went to turn it in I was so out of it I did the two clap thing like at shrines and made a fool of myself too.

Kanazawa was really memorable for some reason, maybe because it really isn't all that famous with non Japanese tourists?

I climbed the hill in the park and was greeted with this amazing view and dig old dude with his Shiba Inu.

For a good 15 minutes the man was posing his dog and taking pictures probably to later upload them on some social media.

I found it incredible how well trained the dog was for this type of photoshoot and how the old man like lifted his paw and the dog kept it lifted for some time for the photo.

It's one of them thing I never expected and I'll never forget.

Also all these Greco-Roman naked statues cracked me up.

Well the locals consider themselves to have that special samurai culture and all, and there's an interesting amount of preserved sites and attractions for a city it's size, basically a small Kyoto I thought at the time.

>maybe because it really isn't all that famous with non Japanese tourists

Don't worry the hordes will ruin it in a few years with the new Shinkansen link and all too.

I remember back in 2012 when I first visted Fushimi Inari, was popular-ish sure but nothing crazy, then it got named the number one most visited site in Japan among foreigners or some shit and now it's a hell hole of crowds, I mean fug they even made the two tunnels of the senbon torii one way each to cope, so sad.

Least it's still great and near abandoned at night though.

Kouyou/Hanami are definitely the worst for obvious reasons, but it's still getting pretty packed year round now it would seem.

Well yeah that's guaranteed. Nagasaki is surprisingly still pretty damn good though, forcing people to take a non-shinkansen train for a few hours to get somewhere seems to filter out a huge amount of tourists I'd guess. Which is why Kanazawa has my pity.

Near Watarase Onsen

I don’t have permanent residency yet, but I don’t have any issues with a long term visa. Should have it in a few years though.

But still, I have been here seven years and have seen little outside of Kyoto. And not much of Kyoto itself really.

I will have to make an image dump of my last few years of stuff soon.

Kyoto has gotten pretty rough lately. Land prices are up because Chinese are buying places up and setting them up as shitty airBNBs. I hope Kyoto taxes the hell out of them some more.

As for sightseeing, as long as you get your main stuff done by 10:00 a.m. you are set. Even Kiyomizudera is empty at 6:00 a.m. most days of the year, plus you get to enjoy that golden hour.

I am hoping the linear track running through Nara and not Kyoto will take some of the pressure off, but it will be decades before it is completed, not to mention becoming as common as the Shinkansen.

What event is this one? That looks amazing
>Chinese are buying places up and setting them up as shitty airBNBs. I hope Kyoto taxes the hell out of them some more.
Same thing is happening in my city, although most of the owners are domestic property management corporations. Still, it doesn't really matter if it's owned by some fat pig in Beijing or Toronto, your neighbourhood is going to get filled by drunken tourists regardless.

If you're ever up for a day trip. I honestly recommend Kanazawa via the Thunderbird Express of if you're in Kyoto to Hokuriku Shinkansen.

It's a great place and it's technically outside Kyoto. I really loved it it's like a more rural Kyoto.

This verification is a pain...
I've not really heard of these covered streets existing in other countries, it seems like a good idea for creating an indoor shopping space that's cheaper than building a shopping centre

Anyway here's a pic of Fushimi Inari to say on topic. If you bother to walk past the intersection/lookout there's a whole lot less tourists so save your photos for then.

Not that guy but I did Shimanami Kaido last February, with a night stop on Hakata Island. Could probably do without, but it's much better since you get time to look around as well.

Went to Oyamazumi Shrine as well. Very pleasant visit, the museums were great with a lot of history, I would say it was worth the kind of hard uphill detour.

For anyone that has not done this trip, I could not recommend it enough. I've gone for 10 years and Shimanami is the most fond memory of all of them. Thanks to that anon who recommended it two years ago.

Loving that snow friend
If I was rich I’d want a huge house out in the countryside with a huge rotenburo and my own private kendo dojo.
Is that a natural onsen?
Onsen are natural hot springs by definition, sentou are artificial public baths
I’ve heard some onsen involve manually drilling down though.

Yeah basically all of them, natural water but I've never come across any where it's a naturally formed pond, need to clean stuff as well/etc.

Closest I've seen is >>20572601
So onsen are like monopolies, new ones are never created.
They're created, either slant drill to a deposit, or just drill ridiculously deep like that Oedo onsen monogatari in Tokyo which has a 1.7km deep drill to the source.

Authentic whale "research" vessel indeed.
Whale meat is delicious and it's pretty much a crime to deny Japan part of its culture.
>it's pretty much a crime to deny Japan part of its culture.
Japan will be denying itself its own culture when it destroys the whale population.
Over fishing is a problem for many countries and species.
Sustainability is key, and so long as they approach it sustainably, I don't really see the issue.
They've decided to stop calling it "research" now, anyway.
I save every photo

How are you dealing with duplicates?
not him but you can use visipics for that
>and so long as they approach it sustainably
Of course, but with politics and nationalism injected into the issue, I can see how the government might have an incentive to misinterpret or outright fudge its own scientific findings on current whale stocks for short-term political gain. They would not want to be seen bowing to international pressure and destroying the traditional way of life of many Japanese.
They hardly catch any to start with, mostly minke which is far from endangered.

Tuna is the real issue but the west ignores it since they eat it too.
>They would not want to be seen bowing to international pressure and destroying the traditional way of life of many Japanese.
That's basically what they've been doing for the last few decades.
A number of towns are basically just whaling towns whose industries have collapsed due to the anti-whaling stance of the commission.
bump from the jaws of death
I'm not saying that whaling shouldn't occur if it can be done sustainably.
I'm just saying that I have reason to doubt that the science surrounding the hunt has been polluted by politics.
Tuna is the real issue but the west ignores it since they eat it too.
>Tuna is the real issue but the west ignores it since they eat it too.
