The thing about London is that it's really gigantic, the population is almost 9 million people. There's all sorts of places there, many of which have no reason to attract tourists. The poor bits aren't as bad as 4chan makes them out to be, but the wealthy bits are more outlandish. Whole neighbourhoods of billionaire oligarchs that tell the government what they can and can't do near their houses, while poor people have to share flats

Yes. The economy of Britain is relatively good and in years to come will improve. Especially as the wealth of London is reinvested into the counties. Those towns will become attractive for older people, largely from Newcastle and Leeds, due to the pleasant surroundings of North Yorkshire and the cheap cost of living.

>>151866862
Sheffield has always been a shithole
Coventry was a fine mediaeval town until the 1940s, when the Luftwaffe reduced it to rubble. The council opted against rebuilding in the manner of Dresden, with respect for history, and instead filled the city will the worst hideosities ever shat into existence on the island of Britain.
>>
>>151866572
Certain areas in the big cities (London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester) all have violent parts but also really nice areas and by the standards of US cities there is nowhere particularly violent.
The most violent places in England tend to be the insular post-industrial towns and small cities usually associated with the Midlands and the North.
Where I live in Lancashire has an exceptionally low crime rate. However nearby towns of Burnley, Accrington and Blackburn are rough and have higher than average violent crime rates. Lots of poverty and drug abuse that drives it.

Sheffield is good. Its has a long working class history and had a reputation as being tough but these days its a student town and rather nice. The nearby Peak District is lovely. If you are considering visiting Sheffield consider watching the World Championship at the Crucible theatre.
Coventry on the other hand is an unpleasant town. It's actually my least favourite place in the UK. Its one of the few places I wouldn't recommend visiting.

Thats a shame. I've heard its a great place to study. It is full of young people. Lots of good restaurants and takeaways. Close to Manchester and Leeds, there are direct trains. Lots of nice countryside nearby.
Are there any other Universities in the UK your considering or anywhere else you might visit?
>>
I don't know anything about it.
>>
>>151867505
For studying I was thinking Oxford and Cambridge (very long shots), Durham, York, and Edinburgh (targets but long shots due to no background in field), and Reading, Southampton, and Aberdeen (more realistic). It may just be a pipe dream, but I’m planning on working as a lawyer for 5-10 years in big law and saving a lot for retirement, and then doing something that I actually care about.

As far as just visiting I’m very interested in East Anglia, Lincolnshire, and the south/southwest (at least to start with)

Oxford and Cambridge are overrated cities. The Universities are exceptional by all standards. But the cities are expensive and touristy. If you can get in by all means go but they wouldn't be my choice of where to settle down permanently.
Durham and York are all lovely cities. If you can get in absolutely go to either of them.
Edinburgh is great but I wouldn't personally live there due to the issues of the Scottish government. Well worth visiting and the University is highly regarded.
Reading is nice although i've not spent any significant time there and i'm not sure of its Uni but the town is a bit like the Sheffield of the South. In terms of its size, working class history, proximity to a major city, and close proximity to an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
I've never been to Southampton or Aberdeen and only know of them by reputation. The South coast is nice and has good weather by British standards. Aberdeen on the other hand is notoriously grey. Its wealthy due to the oil industry but as its in Scotland as I mentioned earlier I wouldn't personally live there.

Im from a town called Clitheroe. It's a nice town in the Ribble Valley which is the best part of Lancashire. I'm a big fan of both York and Durham. Really nice friendly small cities. Lots of students, pretty girls. All sorts of interesting history. Beautiful cathedrals, York Minster is my favourite in England. It's also got great places to eat. York is close to Leeds and Durham is close to Newcastle. I've had great nights out in both cities. They are also close to National parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauties. Not to mention a short drive to the coast. I've considered living in both York and Durham myself and still might if I get a job with the National Trust and the right opportunity comes up.
