>A statue known as Birth of the New World depicting Christopher Columbus created by Soviet/Russian sculptor Zurab Konstantinovich Tsereteli
>The statue stands at 110 meters
>The statue was rejected by the US government when Tsereteli attempted to have it installed there in 1992, in connection with the 500th anniversary of his voyage.
>The municipal government of Cataño, Puerto Rico, consented to having the statue built in their town, but later was unable to garner enough public support and funding.
>On August 15, 2008, the private contractor in charge of building a series of facilities for the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games announced that the corporation had bought the structure and will build it in the municipality of Mayagüez, expecting to assemble it in time for the games.
>After this project was abandoned, the statue was moved to the municipality of Arecibo, where its assembly began during the spring of 2014.

There have been calls to remove it. Nobody wanted to install it because it cost money we do not have. It is located in the middle of nowhere with just a few neighborhoods and no business nearby. Simply put, to pull it down you need money, and the locals do not want it down because it might create enough tourism in the future to improve the community.

I thought the filename wasn't literal. They could have tried to make it seem a little more appealing.
The statue I posted is Simon Bolivar fused with a Condor (the national bird of Colombia). It's meant to be an allegory of Colombia during its darkest moment of narco violence. The artist that made it was kidnapped for three months a couple of years before he made that statue.

Why is he carrying a baby in his arm? What's the story?

>>134448422
In the Hindu epic - Ramayana, King Rama's wife - Sita is kidnapped by the demon king Ravana and he escapes with her on his flying chariot. Rama is away in the woods so he can't protect her. Jatayu, a divine bird spots Ravana abducting her and attempts to warn him. When he doesn't heed his warnings, Jatayu attacks him despite knowing that he isn't strong enough to defeat Ravana. After a brief aerial battle, Ravana slashes Jatayu and mortally injures him.
When Rama returns, Jatayu tells him what has happened and breathes his last. Legend says that he died in that spot (where the statue was made).
The statue is dedicated to him and is supposed to depict him fallen on the rocks after being slashed.

The thing is sculpturing requires intimate work and doesn't translate well to huge statues. Stuff like your pic probably would crash down and fall easily in case of an earthquake since most statues are made of stone. I guess that's why they go for more robust, stronger designs.

>>134448764
>>134448787
What's going on in this statue?
>>
>>134448819
So the statue is a Homage to the "comuneros" better translated as the peasants, it was during colonial times, tensions were high and the church along side with the kingdom of Spain started to ramp up taxes in the new world and in this place (santander name of the municipality) peasant revealed violently against everyone, the empire and the church, even before independence wars, the scenario represents the wrath of the people and the abuse and deceitful nature of religious institutions (3/3)

Eh, plenty of others to make statues of. But i think in the big M’s case its better not to, maybe only stick it to other types of depictions since if statues are allowed its gonna be a huge dick measuring contest, us arabs cant even stop competing with building the tallest skyscraper. Maybe something small and cool like this New York statue (that got taken down)

It's interesting that you know about that story. Another relevant fact is that the comunero rebellion became huge and they actually arrived very close to the capital when it was undefended but the archbishop of Zipaquirá (the nearest important town to Santafé) made a deal with them and agreed to their demands if they didn't enter the city. Then when the army arrived from Cartagena they ignored the deal and the leaders of the rebellion were hanged and quartered, their houses burned to the ground and their lands salted.

I think the same, it looks like a rocket. However since some lefties with nothing better to do sued the government because they used public funds to build that statue and the makers had to bullshit their way out of it saying it doesn't necessarily represent Jesus Christ, they couldn't have made a cross.

The Monkey hanger statue is GOAT

>According to local folklore, the term originates from an incident in which a monkey was hanged in Hartlepool, England. During the Napoleonic Wars, a French ship of the type chasse marée was wrecked in a storm off the coast of Hartlepool. The only survivor from the ship was a monkey, allegedly dressed in a French army uniform to provide amusement for the crew. On finding the monkey on the beach, some locals decided to hold an impromptu trial; since the monkey was unable to answer their questions and because they had seen neither a monkey nor a Frenchman before, they concluded that the monkey must be a French spy.[2] Being found guilty, the animal was duly sentenced to death and was summarily hanged on the beach.

Like if they made a huge circle out of the statues of all our kings the size of that Jesus, holding swords impaled into the ground, with a giant Polish flag in the middle that'd be pretty cool. There is a LENIN statue here in Pasto, Nariño, Colombia

>Seen from afar, the sculpture in the atrium of the Christ the King temple in Pasto looks like another religious image worth admiring.

>More than two metres high, it was finely sculpted in Ecuadorian marble seventy-two years ago and, in spite of the time, still retains the 'divine mystery' of the effigies of the Catholic saints of past times.

>Up close, everything changes. The sculpture of haughty appearance abandons its religious charm to become what would be a scale image of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin

>The Pastuso historian Enrique Herrera tells the legend: According to his account, in 1959, after the triumph of the Castro revolution in Cuba, Commander Fidel would have asked the Ecuadorian sculptor Eloy Campos to make a statue of the politician who led the building of the world's first socialist state.

>"It is said that the sculptor was a member of the Ecuadorian communist party founded in 1926 and that after finishing the effigy of Lenin he kept it hidden because at that time those who supported that ideology were persecuted in that country," said Herrera.

>The version of other researchers in the region also points out that Campos' business with the Castros did not materialize and that he decided to bury the statue under his house to avoid any suspicion from the conservative authorities of the time.

>"Years later," Herrera continues, "the Jesuits of Pasto arrived at the house in Campos and asked him to build a statue of Saint Ignatius Loyola, the military man who founded the Community of Jesus in the 16th century. When the sculptor realised the resemblance between Lenin and the saint, he marked the figure that had already made the Jesuits' emblems and gave it to that religious community.

>Another historian said that it would be Lenin because "unlike other saints this one does not have sandals but boots, the attire he wears is not a tunic and he carries the flag of the Russian revolution on his back".
