How the fuck did this guy get elected to two terms as Governor of California, of all states?
>>
>>10241992
California was the bastion of Republicanism until the mid 90s.
>>
>>10242008
What the hell changed?

>>10242004
I don't think immigration explains it fully. White Californians alone are probably the most extreme leftist demographic in the country. Something happened which changed even the white populace of the state into far-leftists.
>>
>>10242008
California wasn't ever that red, they just tended to vote red for governors and presidents. Then the Republican party basically self-destructed over proposition 187 and lost its state wide viability. The Democrats, now without any serious political challenge from the right, were allowed to go as far left as they pleased.
>>
hollywood clout
>>
California was a libertarian state in those days and during the Cold War it was home to a lot of the defense industry which constituted a major Republican voting block. After the Berlin Wall fell and defense jobs declined, the West Coast was lost to the GOP. San Francisco leftist baby boomers took over the reigns of power in the state from the 90s onward.
>>
>>10242040
California voted Republican in 23 of 34 presidential elections between 1856 and 1988. In ten elections it voted Democrat and once for a third party ticket. So I'd feel safe to say that pre-Clinton it was pretty safely red. Upton Sinclair was soundly beaten trying to run for governor in 1934.
>>
Republicans stopped contesting the West Coast because they figured with the South moving securely into their orbit post-1960s, they could win without it.
>>
>>10242066
I used to agree with this take but after further research I don't think its true. Cali's electorate is essentially the same as Texas's. The difference is that Cali whites only vote 50% R while Texas whites vote 70% R. Honestly I think silicon valley and hollywood are more responsible.
>>
>>10241992
California was still based. What Texas is now is what California was 10 years before becoming faggoted.
>>
>>10242126
Well so does everyone else. I mean Cali's voting electorate is only 20% latino. Immigration defiantly hurt republicans there, but the fundamental issue is that california whites are more left wing.
>>
>>10242118
Texas is only 41% white. It’s a red state because of the 40% of spics there who vote Republican combined with the white GOP voters who vote overwhelmingly Republican. So actually it’s red because of brown people not white people.
>>
>>10242118
Texas culture is bigger on machismo than California's is. Hippie ideals are very alien to Texans.
>>
>>10242148
Having said that, California is a blue state primarily and entirely due to rich white people in the tech and entertainment industries.
>>
Pete Wilson was the last "true" Republican governor of California, and he was elected as recent as the 90s. Not that long ago and yet it's impossible to imagine someone like that getting elected today in Cali.

Schwarzenegger of course was successful more recently but he ran on a significantly more moderate platform. But even then it's hard to imagine his success being repeated in the current day. Californians seem to have developed an unshakeable opposition to the GOP in the past decade which makes the state a write-off for essentially any candidate running on a red ticket.

>>10242086
If Upton Sinclair ran for governor today he'd lose just as handily. You think Hollywood and Silicon Valley would be ok with electing a guy who wants to nationalize everything into Soviet collectives? No matter how many rainbow and BLM flags they upload on their Twitter feed none of them actually want to lose their money and property.

Holy schizophrenia
Whites were so evil and genocidal that they had to instruct themselves how to be decent humans and not complete psychopaths
>>
>>10242140
No I was looking at the data from 16 (2020 isn't out yet) and hispanics are like 23% or something. A lot of them are non citizens, under 18, or just don't vote.
>>
>>10242148
Idk, the red spics in texas help, but in 2018 senate they voted in line with national average (like 27% R) and Republicans still won (although it was closer).
>>
>>10242298
How about 2018 gubernatorial? That senate race was a fluke, Democrats got raped in every other 2018 Texas race and got their teeth kicked in last year.
>>
>>10242313
Yeah Ik. The point is even if the spics in texas don't vote more republican than average, R's can still squeak out a win due to their white vote share, which they can't do in Cali.
>>
>>10242340
All states do, they just seperate hispanic as an ethnicity, which is still only a quarter of the electorate. Like dude I hate beaners as much as you do but Cali's electoral problems are more complicated than just amnesty.
>>
>>10242284
must be weird being so wrong
>>
>>10242187
>Californians seem to have developed an unshakeable opposition to the GOP in the past decade which

Trump was pretty damn popular here whereas nobody gave a shit about Hillary or Biden. Sure, people loved Obama but then everyone across the nation did in 2008.
>>
>>10241992
You do realize California only turned blue because of excessive gerrymandering by Democrats and using many immigrants as possible, both legal or illegal, to change the demographic of the state just for the sake of political expediency right?
>>
>>10242387
Also true of Bush as nobody much cared for John Kerry either. Californians don't like elite East Coasters by and large.
>>
>>10242443
Well fuck them and their shitty Bear Republic
>>
>>10242017
It literally is immigration. There are parts of Southern California that are completely indistinguishable from Mexico. Regan granted amnesty to illegals and the state flipped blue.
>>
>>10242476
Reagan signed an amnesty measure. I don’t know why you would say he didn’t.
>>
California was once good.
>>
>>10242387
>Trump was pretty damn popular here whereas nobody gave a shit about Hillary or Biden
Either this is a lie or Californians are really that cucked
>>
>>10242510
He's right though. Why would a silver spoon New Englander like John Kerry be appealing to West Coasters?
>>
>>10242158
Austin looks like the exception
>>
>>10242514
actually Massachusetts presidential candidate is basically always the kiss of death. the one time it worked they needed a Texan to help get the vote out and it was decided by under 300k votes.
>>
>>10242549
>actually Massachusetts presidential candidate is basically always the kiss of death

Why is that though? Serious question.
>>
>>10242564
Massholes have always been extremely pretentious and smug people since colonial times and are highly unmarketable to most of the rest of us. Yes, Calvin Coolidge was popular but he was really a Vermonter anyway.
>>
>>10242564
Nobody likes Ivy League, country club investment banking snobs.

It's not just *foreign* migration, San Francisco becoming a gay mecca (plus gay rights becoming a partisan issue) and Silicon Valley tech workers also moved democrats in.

>>10242564
Their elite class is more like Europe's traditional elite than anywhere else in the US. Rich Texas oilmen can still appeal to the common man, rich old Southern Wealth can still appeal to the common man, rich New York businessmen can still appeal to the common man, you get the picture. Massachusetts' elite might as well be 18th Century French Parisian noblemen trying to relate to farmers from Occitania.
>>

>rich New York businessmen can still appeal to the common man
Not if they're Michael Bloomberg. (^:

Religion. A lot of whites are evangelical Christians, and it's not a coincidence that the states where democrats win the white vote are also the most secular in the country.
>>
>>10242066
Hmm, that's actually a good argument for a popular vote system anon. Then reds in blues states and vice versa wouldn't have their voices worth nothing.
>>
>>10241992
Outside of the big cities and especially up north, California is rather conservative. Mojave is all cowboys for fucks sake.

Here's the six MA presidential candidates who've actually won electoral votes.

>John Adams
Win election off his predecessor's coattails back when only property owning white males could vote, still only squeak by with 3 EVs, lose four years later to his more populist opponent.
>John Quincy Adams
Win election with 33% of the vote because it got deadlocked and went into the House to be decided, lose big-time four years later to guy who killed a bunch of Brits and redskins.
>Daniel Webster
Was only on the ballot in a few states, won just his home state. Walking stereotype of an elite New Englander.
>JFK
See >>10242549. Also he was at least charismatic unlike all of these others.
>Michael Dukakis
Lose to (ironically) a carpetbagging New Englander in Texas, run with a Texas VP, still can't overcome his image as an elitist New Englander.
>John Kerry
Lose to son of carpetbagging New Englander in Texas, the ultimate smug, douchey walking stereotype of a Massachusetts richfag.
>Mitt Romney
Looks like a stereotypical Gordon Gecko businessman, loses to dudeweed cool sort of but not really black opponent.
>>
It's important to remember that Trump got more votes from California than any other state in 2020.... the issue is that he still lost the state by >5mil votes.
>>
>>10241992
>>
>>10242758
Romney, unique among all of them, also shares the unfortunate distinction of not even being able to carry his own state.
>>
>>10242775
California is like the South in the 1910s where elections are essentially banana republic tier and set up to ensuring the ruling party never loses no matter how shitty and unpopular their candidates are. If they had a legitimate system, Bush would have probably won the state at least the second time and Trump quite possibly both times.
>>
>>10242825
He was also conveniently enough the only one who wasn't part of the majority party in the state when he ran for president.
>>
hope this faggot is burning right now
>>
>>10242017
Jews. No one wants to say it but it’s Jews.
>>
>>10242340
Do they? All states did a while ago.
>>
>>10242119
Blacks vote blue because the GOP tolerates white nationalists.

>>
>>10242284

That's simply because California has the biggest population by far.

>"These hippies have hair like Tarzan, dress line Jane and smell like Cheetah."
>>
>>10241992
Republicans unironically used to be left wing and Democrats used to be Right Wing. Kennedy and Carter both carried Texas and the entirety of the south.
>>
>>10242017
They aren't far leftists though, they're still by far mostly liberals. You go to San Fransisco and look around a bit you'll see shit like anti-homeless furniture (spikes, boulders) painted rainbow colors and shit tons of homeless people around regardless. They're all fairly wealthy white liberals demanding radical purely social change while taking as little from their wallet as possible. They aren't leftists, they're just retarded boomer liberals.
>>
>>10245168

>>10242246
They're not really Marxists or leftists, they're bourgeois who want to normalize their degenerate behaviors.
>>
>>10242387

the latter two won the state by >60% of the vote

>>
>>10242040
>California

You're really oversimplifing things here
>>
I think another thing that is not taken into account for left voting whites is the amount of transplants that move here. Most transplants are lefties to begin with and carry their politics with them. Here in LA, we are relatively more conservative than the Bay area, but mostly all the people that live in the Hollywood Hills to Laurel Canyon to Pacific Palisades are wealthy but vote liberal, but it's a combination of Jews and film industry people. I'm not sure what the politics of the Palos Verdes Peninsula is though, since those guys down there are the actual rich people of LA.
>>
>>10242754
>Outside of 80 % of the population, California is rather conservative

Why are you retards like this? If you remove Paris or London from their respective countries, there's no France or England standing anymore!

I know. NorCal has always been more left-leaning than SoCal, it's closer to Oregon and Washington politically and culturally.

Used to be that they leaned heavily Republican, it was only since Clinton that...
>>
Republicans just stopped seriously contesting the state in presidential elections by the 90s because they realized the South and Midwest were enough to win most of the time. And now the Rust Belt is becoming a Republican-dominated region for the first time since the 1920s so there's still very little reason to bother with California.

"Muh demographics"
Fucking retards. The GOP would have much more success nationwide if they didn't keep alienating Hispanics as much as they have. Economically, all the GOP has to do is keep on their common man rhetoric and expose the Democrats on their woke PC bullshit. Whenever the GOP tries to win over minorities, they fuck up constantly. After Hoover lied to the black population about rebuilding after the Mississippi flood, they switched parties; When the GOP in California pushed Prop 187, it killed any chance of a white-hispanic coalition in that state.
>>
>>10250509

Trump tried, too bad most of the party consists of guys who think Mitt Romney is the ideal one must aspire to. You can lead the horse to the well but you can't necessarily make him drink from it.

"After all, in Latino Voices, a compilation of Latino National Political Survey data revealing panethnic perspectives on a variety of political issues, 75.2% of Mexican Americans interviewed agreed that there were "too many immigrants." In fact, the percentage of Mexican Americans agreeing that there were too many immigrants was higher than that of Anglos (73.8% ) (de la Garza et. al.,1992: 101).2 "

It doesn't help that California has a lot of Low IQ immigrants like Latinos and Filipinos who literally vote people just because they're famous. Look at the Philippines where they elected a dumb fucking champion boxer as a senator despite the fact that said cunt didn't even finish high school.
>>
>>10250651

Que?
>>
>>10244966
This is absolutely false.
Just look at the history. Even Jimmy Carter was still a "Southern Democrat" with the racist white voting bloc behind him.
Blacks all vote Dem because acting as a coherent voting bloc gives them more representation. It doesn't matter if the Republican Party bends over backwards for blacks, they will still vote Dem.
Any attempt to appeal black voters is basically seen as a "divide and conquer" strategy against the black community.
Thus it has essentially become a meta strategy for them. Similar to why America has a two party system.

Where? Maybe some of the wealthier areas of LA and maybe parts of central Valley. Even Orange County went blue both in 2016 and 2020 which is extremely telling as it usually goes red and is one of the richest counties in all of the U.S. Trump being popular here certainly wasn't my experience outside some upper middle class wealthier types I know.
>>
>>10251037
Maybe ten years ago this would be true, the black vote is trending more red since Trump perhaps because they're finally starting to realize that voting based on a Democrat president signing civil rights legislation almost 60 years ago doesn't have much relevance in the 21st century.
