I enjoy making shitty oldschool gradient map gifs in GIMP. They're fun and easy - simply import an image & duplicate layers a number of times (or import a gif), select the full sat spectrum gradient, apply gradient map to every layer then move the hue wheel in increments on each layer, figuring out which values to use depending on how many layers there are. Simple, right? Only, the results have never entirely pleased me.

To show what I mean, I've included an example of this kind of GIF I've found on the net (on the left), combined with one made with my own method on the right. The kind on the left has more finesse to it. It just looks more aesthetically pleasing to me. It's clearly using a different gradient, but because of that it isn't something I know how to produce myself because anything other than full sat spectrum cannot be modified via the hue wheel to get the same effect. The image on the left seems as if the gradient itself is cycling.

Does anyone have any pointers? Or even pointing me in the direction of a tool to generate these kinds of images would be fine too.

sup queddusyuan! What a coincidence bumping into you here. heh heh
touchdesigner, probably
are you doing it in Photoshop? (I'm using Photoshop 2018, so I don't know if this is an outdated method)

keep the original image as the first layer with no adjustments. make a duplicate layer, change its hue and change blending mode to color, or sometimes change it to hue, depending, but likely color here, for the saturation.

it gives a much better shift in tones, and it also doesn't bring out artifacts as much as using hue/saturation on its own. if you're using another program, I remember krita has this option already built in as one of its hue/saturation settings, and I think Gimp does too. I forget what they call it there though. but if my memory is serving me correctly, it is in the color adjustment menu in gimp, (i think there's 3 different hue/sat options there?) whilst in Krita I think it's an option within the hue/sat window.
>are you doing it in Photoshop?
literally the first sentence dude
I'm tired, I forgot. I mentioned Gimp though. it's literally in my last sentence, dude.
I think you'd have an easier time in general using Photoshop. you can reset the full trial of all of the Adobe 2018 software, every week , or use a crack that disables trial period, but anyway, with Photoshop you could record an action, which would quickly generate every layer with every hue variation, probably make an action to turn it into a gif too.
Ive got something in the works, made with Tcl/Tk. Will be ready soon.

what's that?
It started in the late 80s. The legendary John "Big Cock" Ousterhout invented and discovered Tcl, "tool command language", while working at a university. From there he built Tk, "tool kit", an extension to Tcl which enabled the construction of rich graphical user interfaces with just a few lines of code. Tcl quickly took off and became one of the most popular languages in the mid-to-late 90s, as it allows for writing portable software that runs on Unix, Microsoft Windows, and even Apple Macintosh.
Not TCL/TK, the actual GUI you're using

Huh? Oh, you mean this? This is a Tcl script I'm writing that works in conjunction with imagemagick and ffmpeg to generate these gradient map animations. I'll release it in a few days, it's almost ready.
It's at the stage where it's basically working but it needs a bit more polish and a couple extra features. I made this with it.

my question is: why?

this shit is neither attractive, nor showing technical skill.
what is the fucking appeal? why waste your time with it?
Not OP, but I do visual work and it's fun.
"I personally don't find it fun or aesthetic, so i think that means it's simply just not fun aesthetic period, because I'm severely autistic and lack a working theory of mind"
no. if I were completely sure about it I would not ask a question.
but for as long as you are not answering my question I will keep my natural opinion about it an say it is very much useless shit.
It's not even a question, it's literally just pure autistic "Why do you like stuff I don't like???" suck a dong

Because it's aesthetically pleasing. No other reason.

Here's a more subtle example. There's a lot more potential with this technique.

It's been 35 days. Is it ready?

In the meantime, an anon on /wsr/ posted a little python script to make these a while back.
The link to the script expired but I've reuploaded it here.
Yeah, we're about to make our first public release. I'll update this thread with it once it's posted.
First public release is now up.
