Recently found a collection of over 500 35mm projector slides, taken by a design firm to showcase old packaging and promotional designs to customers. Most of the slides are undated but the ones that are range from the early 70s to 1980.
I've had a glance through them and some of the more notable designs the lot included are:
>Packaging for One A Day multivitamins, Kool-Aid, Michelob, Borden, VO5 shampoo, ThermoServ, Morton salt
>Multiple unused branding/logo redesigns for SeaPak
>Marketing presentation for Borg Warner
>Complete unused rebrand for Speedy Auto Service (apparently to Speedy Muffler King)
>Print advertising promoting Wisconson cheese
>Miscellaneous other packaging, logo, and advertising designs
A lot of it is very stylized, very 70s stuff. If anyone's interested in seeing some of it let me know, I don't have a scanner yet but I've been taking photos through a slide viewer for the moment.

You have my interest slide anon. There are scanner beds meant for slides if you get the opportunity. Though the retro presentation is a feature not a defect.

Slidescan's a smartphone app that might streamline things for you.

many of the logos you see here are very contemporary actually. google logo almost fits into this list (if you strip it of the many colors).
And I have seen many hipster businesses using the principles similar to the one you highlighted.

I do understand the sense of melancholia you feel.
I also prefer the design over many current competitors.

That example's particular layout style with a bold, simple tag line in plain text and tons of unused space was one of a gazillion variations on the VW print ad concept that turned that industry on its ear beginning in the late 50's. It began as something of a poke in the eye towards the rigid conventions of the day about what ads like that "should" look and read like, was wildly successful and embraced by consumers as hip and irreverent and perfectly in tune with the product ...but after everyonecand their dog jumped on that bandwagon that look eventually became the very thing it was originally an antidote to: a formulaic convention that was literally everywhere by the mid 70's. Its still around and as you say still used to convey a "hip" sensibility...but the novel aspect of it is long gone and its vibe is more of a retro/nostalgia hip than a fresh and forward thinking hip, and elicits a sense of reverence rather than irreverence.

Polaroid copied that VW ad format in a huge way.
Leaf through any major magazine from the mid 60s- mid 80s and you'll see clones like that everywhere.

Nike is another...they use a more aggressive tone and ALL CAPS headlines to match, but it's the same idea, and it's not for nothing that retro/nostalgia and a reverent customer base is a big part of their marketing strategy.
