Can anyone here articulate what makes JAV covers so distinct/recognisable? Is it just the overuse of text? Something to do with the layout?
Would love to hear some thoughts and theories from the experts

it's not that complicated

There is a fuck ton of cliches, perhaps the exagerated use of Mincho-type fonts with soft pink borders.

There is a LOT of pink titles.

I have been trying to study this aesthetic for a while alongside doujin covers but that's all I have for certain

True but pic related is immediately recognisable for what it's referencing too lul. An equivalent in western porn would just be to slap a giant logo somewhere rather than use conventions in layout

>>430269
Nice, thanks for the serious answer, I've also been giving it some thought.
The colour theory for pink and femininity and intimacy makes enough sense, I guess.
I previously hadn't thought about the fonts that much but I agree with you on the Mincho-type usage. It's an unusual choice since it's got the reputation of being more conservative and stately, right?
On the other hand, I've noticed non-drama releases (IE no story/plot, just the sex and scenarios etc) often use sans-serifs in the cover. Cutesy or romantic/love-dovey might use Maru (rounded) type. Maybe they use Mincho to offer some seriousness and the feeling of an actual movie/TV drama etc
The vertical text seems to just be a practical byproduct of wanting to frame the actress better (Japanese can be easily read vertically anyway). Because of this convention, covers with horizontal text can often be even more unique and eye-catching

Photography I believe is the most important factor. Always very clean shots, usually blurred backgrounds with a single woman in a provocative pose. Panders to the male gaze(can't believe I fucking used this expression in a non-sarcastic way, i want to kill myself) with the photographer in a position of power over the subject. It's also much heavier on the editing in terms of touchups on the subject than western porn. They get photoshopped to hell and back.

Post more examples of covers so we can try to find a similar thread. I'm interested in this thread topic.

I'm curious if the arrangement of the model on the cover is usually on one side or is that not a consistent thing to it? Do they usually make a particular set of poses? I would assume most covers have them staring directly into the camera as a way for the person purchasing to associate it with the model staring at him.
>>
I would advice you to download a bunch of them and then cut the few first seconds since most of them have the title in a black background.

It would be pretty cool to see a collection

Sure thing, i'll routinely update with more covers and a few of my own observations where relevant. Here's another fairly typical and unremarkable example. Slightly less traditional/staid Mincho type but still using a serif to denote drama, I guess?

As for model arrangement/positioning, I don't think there's a standard. Poses can be pretty varied but the delicate chin-touching posture popular for Asian girls makes frequent appearances if you know what I'm talking about. I'd also agree that most actresses are staring into the camera for the effect you've described. You will very occasionally see stuff like thoughtfully gazing into the distance

>>430295
I agree, it's usually a very severe blur on the background save for a few props that might play into the title's genre etc. You're also right about the photoshopping. With western porn, there might be a ton of airbrushing and smoothing but in JAV, it's not uncommon to see faces and bodies being tweaked quite heavily (thinner chin/jaw, bigger eyes, smaller waist, etc).

>>430305
Hadn't even thought about that instance of the title text/design. That's a neat idea and worth investigating too, thanks for bringing it up

A chinese designer made those, use reverse google search to see his stuff.

Sadly, it's too different than actual JAV titles

Also, I'm down to study this in depth I would love to find the main characteristics and hopefully make a guide

Huh this is a nice find anon, here's his original article on what looks like some kind of graphic design blog: https://www.shejidaren.com/av-feng-mian-wen-zi-she-ji.html?replytocom=5442

>"Although AV covers have an emphasis on the photography of the subject and the post-processing/editing, the text layout and graphics are still a great reference to learn from. When observing these covers, I would suggest not only looking at the portraits in passing but also to consider the combination of text and graphical layouts. In just a few seconds, they might give you some inspiration to create."

So it's really just a collection of some elements he's found visually appealing.
The graphical icons are pretty interesting and aesthetically pleasing. The text layout is also distinctive and balanced even without the photography.

On a related note, when I was searching for the source of your image, I noticed that more serious Japanese novels often have a similar text layout on the cover but usually don't have any accompanying images. See pic related for an example... Is there some kind of design aesthetic basis that's just common in Japan and text layouts that we haven't considered?
>>
>>430336
pretty much it could be, I don't have experience with this sort of lettering but I've seen quite a lot of novels with similar layouts

blur the background, put the "back" and "front" prominences next to the vertical center of the image
basically put all the focus on the woman and the letters

they are so distinct that i will remember this cover forever

Op here. These are nice, there actually is a lot of mixing of typefaces and styles as >>430523 said. Might also be worth mentioning that the information delivered is pretty elaborate. Not only is the title usually more poetic (and convoluted), there's a bunch of other superfluous stuff like "bewitching smile" or "obscene love juice 100%" that aren't part of the title but aren't always part of the official subtitle either. This just means even more opportunities to mix and match more fonts

>>430671
Agreed, very heavy blur and the end result is really distinct. I wonder if someone who's less familiar with JAV would immediately know it was pornographic though?

>>430673
Audibly kek'd, nice one

Anyway pic related this time predominantly uses a horizontal layout for the text. I like the switched colours over the actress, nice bit of contrast with her clothes in my opinion. The layout overall is also quite unique but is it still unmistakably JAV?

The woman is clearly Japanese, as is the text. Suppose it was just a tiny watermark at the bottom, you'd still assume it was at least an adult magazine or a gym/yoga advertisement.

The color scheme is warm romantic and the text size and positioning is feisty playful. Clearly not a business advertisement.

Also I see some Jargon a true JAV and hentai fan would know - NTR - An acronym for 'netorare', a cheater, somebody unfaithful.
>>
>>430696
looks like a magazine cover with an unintentionally lewd woman
noticed a trend of splitting text between vertical w/ slight angle towards center of image and straight horizontal

That pink and some slight variation is used on almost every regular JAV cover and even on some hentai doujins

of the few thousand kanji only a few hundred are unique to Japan, and they are for the most part rarely used or exist now only in dictionaries. these are called kokuji or wasei kanji. the most common and majority are Chinese characters and have at least one pronunciation based on Chinese.

She doesn't show any of the goods, but the specific pose shes striking as well as the amount of her body being shown allures you. your mind races thinking of the infinite possibilities yet to cum.

In english it translates to "Married Personal Trainer Tempts Me With Her Hot Ass And Bewitching Smile Reverse". Such a absurdly and unnecessarily long title that catches the eye, and the pink and white font complement it pretty well.

compared to the average western porno dvd, that overloads you with naked hot girls over boring backgrounds and usually have generic names like "milf fucker 7" or "big massive tits" they tend to stand out more.
>>

There is a common symptom that's present in a lot of Japanese visual design in general and that's how much a lot of things POP at the viewer.

One thing that you'll see in a lot of pamphlets and websites in japan is that it feels very crowded, especially when text is present. Conventionally, western designers are taught to use white space to give the viewers' eyes more breathing room and make it easier for them to find and absorb information.

Japanese design is the complete opposite and it packs together visual information with very little whitespace in between. In your JAV cover example, aside from the common pink motif, you can see that the characters take up a lot of space on the cover.
