ITT: we post the mid- & late 2000s aesthetics.
Anything between 2003 and 2012 is welcome here.
THIS IS NOT A Y2K THREAD
DO NOT POST Y2K HERE
While yes, those two aesthetics may overlap, y2k already has its own thread, so post blatant y2k stuff (i.e. anything from between 1996 to 2002) there instead.

The entirety of Mirror's Edge screams mid-late 2000s aesthetics
>>
Mid to late 2000s design was pretty bad all around. Web 2.0 stripped the character out of brands and introduced a kind of creepy sterility that still lingers in modern design trends to an extent. I mean just look at 4chan today, it's basically the same shit design it was in 2008 during peak Web 2.0

While I can see where you're coming from, I'd say the focus on skeuomorphism at that time at least still gives some degree of personality compared to the practically simplified 2d design that became commonplace after 2013-2014.
Then again that's probably nostalgia talking.
>>
>>410544
Yeah, I think part of the thing is it has no nostalgic value for me (I'm in my mid-30s). I can appreciate some of the trends of the time to an extent, but by and large they don't do it for me. I'm much more receptive to the kinds of trends that were popular in the mid 90s to early 2000s, as well, frankly, as some of the current design trends, many of which draw from that time period. It's all cyclical and it's kind of fascinating to see firsthand now that I'm, you know, old.

Man. The summer of 2009 til like. . . The fall of 2013 were the best years of my life. I have no doubt that I will have years or times I enjoy as fondly, but something about junior year in highschool and senior year were really solid for me. Whenever I go back to my grandparents house where I grew up, I sometimes sit in my old room and just wait. 2010 is alive in the walls back home, I can feel it. I want to think myself back to that time, bros.

>I want to make something that looks like mid 2000s graphics that were presented on websites, promotional posters, and commercials in what I can only assume was the western media of the time. It's like spindly and curvy inorganic shapes, paint splatter, graffiti inspired emblems, and rough textures overlayed
I've always loved early 2000s futuristic stuff, but the fact that people gave it a name makes it easier to grab material of it for reference

I remember this ad campaign. Scion were pushed to be the 'new' fast and furious ricer-mobile like old civics were at the time. Instead it was bought by college age girls and old jews

Blackberry has some phones with physical keyboards on them, there's also the Unihertz Titan, and if you're a freetard there's also the Pinephone (although the keyboard for this one is an add-on)

Did not like it back then, do not like it now.

It left a bad taste especially in electronics and home appliances, where the design raised the price of a product by 30-60 % yet brought no extra functionality OR if it did, the feature did not work very well or had high requirements, e.g. extra non-standardized software/adapters/products, an internet connection for accounts etc.

Having lived through it, I understand why further standardization, WIFI and simple user interfaces became popular fast.
>>
>>412629
Not really. I get what you are saying but it's a dystopian hellhole with prefab structures. Sort of like the internet and phones and apps today all with the same standardized corporate soulless design. Our physical world is more 1995-2008 internet but the world of Mirror's Edge is 2020 internet.

more eco awareness, there's a sense of wanting to communicate connectivity and peace. i feel like it's a bit more urban and gen-x hip bc gen x'ers started becoming authority figures at design studios. its extremely chill, it wants to drink beer and listen to the strokes with you

there was definitely a really common design trope in the mid to late 2000s of color or paint being added to a colorless space. maybe that was subconsciously related to the cultural effects of 9/11 and obama being elected or something. idk i was born in 2002 so politics had no effect on my memories of that frame of time.

>>
>>419168
apparently that one was supposed to be in color but sony changed it to black and white without david lynch's approval which is really unfortunate, id love to see the original version if it still exists out there somewhere.
>>
>>419164
>maybe that was subconsciously related to the cultural effects of 9/11 and obama being elected or something
How is that related lol?
It's probably a consequence of fluid simulations becoming better, faster and easier to do, kind of an evolution of metaballs and blob objects becoming somewhat popular in the latter half of the 90s
>>
>>419174
liquid animation becoming easier to pull off definitely has something to do with it, but perhaps visuals of a bland monochrome environment getting painted over with color is pretty analogous to the feelings lots of people (particularly artists, who skew more liberal) had years after 9/11, coming out of the bush jr. administration and into the obama era, the campaign of which was ran on the words hope and change. not that they're directly related, but i feel like it could reflect the general feelings and culture amongst people who typically work in graphic design during that time.
>>
>>419180
I can see it, though.a lot of these types of advertisements also appeared in 2007 and 2008 before Bush resigning. This could also just be another way for graphic designers to "rebel" against the establishment

i used to just call the time period of 2005-2012ish as the bling, bidazzled 80's inspired neon colored street graffiti social media look. everything back then had a graffiti look for some reason. i think this is because Hip-Hop/rap and R&B took over the rock and nu metal aesthetic and everybody wanted to look "urban" aka a black person.

The idea was to make relatively cheap and customizable cars to appeal to younger drivers, learning from the failure of the PT Cruiser. Still didn't take, shit was still too expensive. I heard that people swear by their xBs though. It still kind of blows my mind that I attended the first and last of my local car shows to feature Scions.

>there was definitely a really common design trope in the mid to late 2000s of color or paint being added to a colorless space.
100% Apple, unfortunately. Mid 2000s-2011ish is when you actually saw a massive reduction of "color" in media. 90s had a ton of diversity, and at some point people felt like they were good and suddenly you had a bunch of shows and movies with just white people again. Obama didn't even snap people out of it, it was Trayvon and BLM. 9/11 actually accelerated this to a degree, because "We're all Americans!" means that everyone can be represented by marketable white folk.

t. 31 and sad.

its not bad, just heavily influenced by its age

>terrible dated
Still looks good up to this day, so Idk what are you talking about. W7 UI was way worse and really a product of its time. And I say this as windows user.
>>
>>419537
it looks good, but dated
its not exactly timeless design, but is was never bad design. thats why it remains good today.
it is still plagued by trends and influences of its time, instead of staying truly timeless.
>>
>>419538
I never said it was timeless. Unfortunately, UI design is plagued by following the trends popular in any time period that it would never be timeless.
