Stupid questions thread / Questions that don't deserve their own thread

I'm trying to blur the eyes/nose on a movie in after effects. Tracked motion, applied to null object, using tracking info to drive an adjustment layer on top of eyes/nose. Due to lighting and movement, tracked movement is not precise enough, so I'm tweaking the shape and position to follow the face's perspective/position changes. I've activated keyframes on Mask Path, Mask Opacity (for when blur is not needed) and Position, see pic related.
I'm scrolling trough the video and adapting the mask's shape/position as needed, 30 seconds of footage in, I preview my work and to my surprise the mask has changed shape from what I originally set it as, and basically all my work carefully shaping the mask to the subjects face is gone. It's close to what I shaped it, but different enough to fuck me up. What am I doing wrong? What else do I need to keyframe so I actively lock the masks shape/size as desired?

tl;dr how do I lock an adjustment layer's mask's shape/size per keyframe?

It's a fun little project, but if you want to get technical, then yes.
>>
>>409852
I think your problem is keyframing the position instead of just the path (you can move the whole mask at once, just alt click the mask point with a square around).

>how do I lock an adjustment layer's mask's shape/size per keyframe?
not entirely sure what you mean by this but maybe changing the keyframes to HOLD keyframes (select the keyframes and Ctrl+Alt+Click on them), that way they won't animate in-between and just change to the new position at the keyframe

>I wanna know how to do this effect.
Get a nice texture (you can easily torrent the Ezra Cohen ones)
Create an Ae comp with your footage and the texture
Duplicate the texture
On one texture layer, apply curves/levels and pump up that contrast. Hide the layer and rename it as map or something
Apply a displacement map to your footage and set the layered you just named map as the map.
Put the untouched texture on top of everything and change it's blending mode to Add. If the effect is too much, lower it's opacity

Forget about your old photo-manipulation stuff, just create a new piece for your portfolio every day. Whatever. Have a friend with a band? Make a show poster for him (even if there's no show).
A month from now you will have 30 pieces, 5 of them should be decent enough.
gratz! you now have a portfolio

Got an affinity designer question
I just recently got a graphics tablet and have been mucking around, i have never drawn on a PC before so its all a bit new. I am trying to figure out the best way to do shapes like pic related. I know its cringe, but its the best example on google I could find of the kinds of shapes, strokes with sharp edges and varying thickness.

So currently, I have been using the brush and I can get the look I want in most cases, but I would like to have it actually be a vector shape, than just a single stroke. So the only solution I have found at the moment is to do the stroke I want with th ebrush, then use the pen to go over the outlines. Am I crazy or must there be a simpler way to turn a brush stroke into a shape? OR like, brush wit ha shape?
Maybe I'm just not used to it but the pen feels clunky, I want to be able to draw my shapes, basically, is that a thing I can do with affinity designer?

Things you're good at. Things you have experience doing. Things that were successful. A resume is your shot to show off what you can do. If you just copy someone else's work, then it's meaningless. That's why student work from a gd design graduate is better than the xeroxing that goes on here, by try hards and pajeets who think they can cheat their way in.

Best advice:
10-12 pieces.
Simple write up to explain the work, and it's success, if any. If it's student work, then detail what your goal was.
Be able to tailor your book to a specific job - designers have always done that. I can throw a pretty quick book of photo editing together, or a page layout one, or an illustration book, depending on what jobs I'm chasing. Back in the day, designers would have physical portfolios that used 3 ring binders, so they could swap work in and out, for updating or tailored for a specific job. Now, just generate PDFs for each application.
For everything else, set up a simple website.

Just use your head. If you apply for a job in an ad agency as a junior designer, they're not really going to care about glitch graphics or Blender renders. They want to see you can work on anything you get assigned, and have at least working knowledge of the basics - page layout, image editing, and vector elements.

And, don't be an ass. Don't put metal album covers in for a corporate gig.

>>

I've been using Photoshop for years, and I don't know of a single way PS upscales an image on import, or dragging into the layer from the desktop. The only way an image is upscaled is if you do it intentionally.

Now, considering this is 4chan full of people in any other context would have people saying "No WAY someone could be that fucking stupid", I'll assume your dumb ass is dragging a low res image (473x700 is low res) into a high res documents, and scaling the image using the bounding box handles before hitting return, because your chimp brain thinks PS is magic, or you're so dumb you just click on things randomly with no clue what anything is supposed to do.

To be clear here, - a 473x700 image is either going to be really small on a 2000x1500 page (especially if the smaller image is 72 dpi because you took it off the web, and you used the default page PS makes for you at 300 dpi). It will never upscale into anything but blurry.

Do you even know what DPI means? I have to assume you don't here.

TL;DR Read the fucking manual, and get high res images to work with, for fuck's sake.

I mean, what do you do all day, poke at PS like a chimp poking at an anthill with a stick? I bet you've never even looked in the Script menu, but here you are, whining like a little bitch because your potato computer can't handle 30 layers.

Did it ever occur to you to actually learn how Photoshop works, and what it's tools are?

That's the answer I need.

I like coloring in lewd lineart as a hobby, but in this latest case, just after I finished one, I found a version at a much higher resolution.

Is there any quick way to color in the new one based off my earlier work in photoshop? Or would it be better just to start over? I still have my old work saved on individual layers for the three colors used in this example.

Also, on a side note, is there a better way to do this than manually lassoing everything of one color for a layer? Everything I know about photoshop (what little there is) has been self-taught, and I'm definitely a chimp-brain.

I've worked in and with prepress for more years I want to admit around here, but if there's one constant, it's they either will not accept Corel files, or they tack on fees to convert them to other apps to get them to print correctly. Corel files clog imagesetters, they're a pain in the ass.

Export the file, and print it from another app. Also,. don't use Jpeg for CMYK files. Use uncompressed tiff or psd. Even Gimp would be a better app to use to print, over Corel.

The type "bible" would probably be The Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst.

https://www.amazon.com/Elements-Typographic-Style-Robert-Bringhurst/dp/0881791326

If you're looking to do Mucha style lettering, then you need to dive into and study Art Nouveau. That's a completely different rabbit hole than conventional type design, as they broke away from conventional style and made up font styles based more on aesthetics and less on legibility and construction - and much of it was hand drawn, as well.

The same mindset was behind the poster style art of the 60's. by guys like Mouse & Kelly, Moscoso, and Rick Griffin, who took a lot of Art Nouveau elements and modified and expanded on it further - and much of it was also hand drawn.

It's not a bad path to go down, but you have your work cut out for you. I'd learn the basics of font construction, then dive into Art Nouveau and start trying to design type that fits whatever aesthetic of a poster you're working on. It's gonna take some time and skill to get there. If you're looking for a book of "rules" on that kind of thing, it doesn't exist. Study both the Art Nouveau period and the art rock period of the 60's and 70's, and try it yourself.

Pic is a poster by Stanley Mouse. Entirely hand lettered, but you can glimpse what fonts he used as a basis. Guys like Stanley had no computers, no typesetting machines, and were using old printing presses to make posters with, so it was really only possible to hand draw the plates.

Looks like Photoshop bevel and emboss with a texture added to the layer style. Could be one of the legacy patterns, "bubbles" is a pretty good match
>>
>>416021
It isn't bubbles I don't think. The thing is that even if it was I don't know how to make a blue pattern like bubbles blend so well in with every color. The patterns always make things foggier because there aren't transparent.
The fact that this is so vibrant despite the texture on top must mean something more complicated is going on there. Because you can't bevel a texture, so whatever is used not only manages to keep the color vibrant but also retains the texture's pure black.

what is the correct term for a random displacement of pixels, perhaps according to a gaussian curve?
kind of like a guassian blur, but for each pixel in the new image: the source pixel is picked at random from some given radius around it, and statistically more likely to be closer than further away

the effect would be basically a frosted glass effect, and I know I've seen it many times, I just have no idea what it's called
I could simulate it with raytracing a noisy glass surface or even just programming it by hand if I were really determined, but it's got to be some obvious bullshit filter that everybody knows about (not a graphic design person, hence my ignorance)

googling for "photoshop scatter" just gives me a bunch of "I don't feel so good Mr Stark" effects that are not even remotely it

thanks for any assistance
>>
>>416360
(cont'd)
what I'm NOT looking for is a blur with a texture added to it, or something that's actually trying to be a frosted glass effect per se.

I just want something that has the effect of taking existing pixels and shuffling them around, with a statistical preference toward small displacements

You need a custom printer/screen printing for that. Very pricey, not many shops have one or willing to fuck with it. I know Unified in LA has done it, but they shop that out, not sure who does it for them.

Most big printers can handle custom jobs, but because that needs a lot of set up, you're gonna pay out the ass just to get ready to make any.

If this is a small order, like 10, then talk to a t-shirt shop and see if they're willing to cut screens to make one. I've only seen a handful of CD cases like that, and one designer who had it done on a large scale, and he said it wasn't easy, or cheap.

Also, can you stack expressions? I'm using the loopOutDuration but I'd like to slow the animation down and I'm not sure if there's an expression for that.

And last, if I'm going to be exporting for use as an overlay in streaming software, is there a best format for that? I'm assuming it will export with transparency, but I've never done this before.

Eh... h-hi... graphic design. I don't know what graphic design is........... but I know I have to produce something which I'd imagine I'll go to a freelancer site for but I don't know what to ask for. All I know is that the logo will need to look like an actual surface of something; in this case, a diamond plate like you see in p-pic related. But do I say describe it as like, "realistic," "3d" etc.? Please help. I'm lost.

How do i make normalmaps?
>>
i am working in blender and i vaguely remember watching a video that mentioned some sort of formula for calculating the correct size of a PBR texture. i have nodewrangler setup so that i can import the textures fine but i usually just end up messing with the scale on the vector map until it looks good. does anyone know what this formula is?
>>
>>418552
https://wunkolo.itch.io/pixsort
>>
>>418614
idk if this will work, but you can try and see:

1 - Duplicate the layer
2 - Apply the threshold effect, adjust as necessary
3 - Use it to drive alpha channels in AE or, in Photoshop, use selective color to select black/white and use the selection as a mask on the original layer

>>418781
Look up skeuomorphism

>>419104
Idk about formulas, but maybe you're talking about texel density? As in properly scale textures according to object size in a given scene.

>>419106
Thanks anon, looks interesting.
>>
>>419109
i really can't remember what it was for exactly, i remember hearing it and then vaguely remembering it as i was working with these PBRs. i watched a few more videos about PBR texturing and it seems that most people just kinda tweak the scale until it looks good. so as long as there is nothing wrong with that, i will probably not worry about formulas since that just makes it a bit more complicated

I think you're getting closer. Maybe now you're equipped with the knowledge to find out yourself.
Cropping parts of a video onto other videos is really common, so you'd think that someone else would have looked it up.
What was preventing you from finding it on search sites before was that you were using another common term used in video editing software ("cutting") in a context where it's not often used.

Figure I'll ask here

I need to edit a map that's around 600,000 pixels wide, and I'd normally do it in gimp, but

A: Wikipedia won't let me download the fullsize map as as png, it gives you an error if you try: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mesoam%C3%A9rica_y_Centroamerica_prehispanica_siglo_XVI.svg . You CAN download it as an SVG vector file though

B: Even though GIMP apparently supports SVG files, when I try to open the image, it gives me an error. I realize it's an absurdly large image in terms of dimensions, but wikipedia says even as a png it's only 1.7mb, and I've worked with 100mb+ XCF fil;es no problem in GIMP?

Anybody got any suggestions, or know of alternate software that could handle opening the file and cutting some stuff out/moving some stuff around on it?

Second, I'm a beginner freelance web dev on the side and I just finished up a client's portfolio site. I know how to do in terms of site generation, but I'm weak when it comes to the design of the site. The most graphic design I ever done is memes with gimp.

I'm currently working for a company that wants me to update a manual of one of their products. Usually, I would do that in inDesign, because that's what I've learnt, but they want to use the same software later on and don't want to pay the monthly fees for something they'd only need every few months. I've considered doing the manual in Affinity Publisher or Scribus instead, but don't know either program. Currently trying to teach myself Scribus, which seems to be somewhat different from InDesign (no primary text frames?).
Question: How similar is Publisher to InDesign? I prefer using primary text frames and adding images via anchor as a text character. Is that possible with Publisher? Or would Scribus be a better choice? The manual won't be printed and is only for digital distribution.

The website states that lines should be at the minimum 1.5mm thick, and the space between lines minimum of 1mm, so that the print works well. I don't have any lines with strokes in my artwork though, it's only shapes.
What I want to have printed has a few details that taper into really sharp corners which are at the tips of course smaller than 1.5mm.
Will these simply get cut off at the point where they go under 1.5mm width and rounded off?

The whole project is set up as 380x380mm, which is the maximum print size.

Based Fireworks bro.
Essentially, Fireworks stores all of the vectors, layers and bitmaps within the structure of its PNG file. This makes for easy exchange of image files, but as you can see 4chan doesn't quite like these extended definition PNGs.
What you need to do is to export the file rather than using the saved file. Under the File menu select Image Preview and then export using the following popup window.
Alternatively, you can convert the saved png using some other program, most of them should get rid of extended portions added by Fireworks.

Right, so I'm making a video which is essentially just a series of still images with my voice over, a la Zero Punctuation.

For my previous project I made the images in GIMP (I've switched to Inkscape now as it's more fitting for my style) which I just ported into my editing program and matched them with the voice over.
But this was extremely tedious as I had to move and scale the images in the timeline by hand and a snap feature that didn't position things how I wanted them.

Is there a video editor that's good for editing simple still images by the exact frame? Doesn't even need to support transitions and such, I just use hard cuts.
It would still be nice if it supported transparency, scaling, rotation, etc. but I'm honestly not fussy about it.

GIMP newbie here. I since i updated to a new version, i have been having trouble ctrl c/v cropped areas from images. normally i could select an area tool on an image, ctrl c, new image same size as my crop, ctrl v, edit/export as, done.
however, now when i do this, the image never pastes properly, or rather, what pastes doesnt necessarily look like what i have selected in the other image window.

when i ctrl v in the new image, it looks like my selection i have pasted is moved up like 1" on a 27" 1920x1080screen(sorry dont know how to estimate pixels)
but when i click back to the other image, my selection box is where i left it, on the content i wanted to capture.

WTF is going on?

sorry for requestfagging, never been to this board nor do I know anything about graphic design. I just have a question, where can I find someone to design a t-shirt for me (in full). I want someone to make (1) t-shirt like this for me but with the jim carrey grinch from the 2000 movie, not the cartoon. Same grinch on both sides.

I don't know where to search, google doesn't really help I tried etsy but they all they do is just words and there was this one guy who did PDF t-shirts for a dollar?
I think I need to hire a graphic designer to photoshop the grinch on some sort of t-shirt template cleanly (with his hair and all) and then upload to a t-shirt

help an autist out. I don't know where to start.

Hello
I'm trying to create a gif from images
I'm using python and ImageMagick
My test run had
49 pngs @ 60.1mb
1920x1080p <- where I think my fuckup is
Using ImageMagick convert function
My cpu was max at 100%, write was climbing 7+gbs
the gif never completed after about 20 minutes, but I did get a partially

Is making 1080 gifs that resource intensive? Is there a better way? Thanks

How do I edit an image to make a texture look 'real'? For example, say I painted an orange square, but I want the color to look uneven like a real one would. I know how to use GIMP. I also know about Perlin/Simplex noise, but haven't achieved results. What's the right way to get that effect that pretty much all textures IRL have?
>>
>>426651
My workflow is:
>paint the basics of the texture in Blender using the Texture Paint workspace (basically fill faces and smudge lines; I'm talking about textures, not materials)
>edit the UV image on GIMP to add extra stuff that would've been hard on Blender
>import the edited into Unity (you could use them on Blender just the same)
If your final target is a Blender thing, then you also have a material-based workflow available. Basically make a texture atlas (e.g. 3 by 3 solid color blocks in one image) and then in the UV Editing workspace move the stuff over the colors (in other words, you can either move the colors into the stuff, or move the stuff over the colors); this workflow seems faster but since my stuff goes to Unity I never use it. Do you happen to know about >>426985 ?

Hello gents. I recently found Sam Hyde's graphic cuts from his videos. Specifically, this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bwv_rP2Ufx0

I think it's amazing, and I'm very interested in the style. What would you classify it as, if you can put a term to it? Moreover, where does one acquire digital assets like the ones in these clips? Most are 3D and I have no idea where to begin to find these things.

I've done minimal video editing, but a shitton of work in Photoshop over the years. I guess I will have to get After Effects.

$500 is the average rate, whether you throw in free revisions and multiple mockups is up to you. Anything below that is literal pajeet tier manslaughter to the industry. I’ve heard college students charge $120 minimum. If you go lower than that you’re hurting other people in the field and yourself.

I'm doing batch automated watermarks in photoshop.

But the 'copy layer -> move' oreintation is about center. So for every image that means that the watermark is in a different place (because it's aligned from center rather than a corner). In some instances if the image is too small it cuts out the watermark entirely.

How can I orient new layers from the corner instead of center for automation?

Is a logo designer responsible for doing legal work on whether the logo they created for their client is already done or similarly done for another company? In my opinion, no. Photoshop.
If you just want to rotate the image so a certain line is horizontal, use the ruler tool.
If you want to fix/alter the perspective, use perspective warp.

No, I want to fix the perspective.

The weird part is how they managed to get the glow to be proportional to the lightness of the gradient. I tried this in photoshop, and it "glows" around the entire rectangle. Lastly, the glow seems to blend very well with the white of the gradient, which is something that seems super difficult when i'm trying to do it. I must be miles off, somehow.

layer 1. rectangle with gradient fill
layer 2. duplicate layer 1, change rectangle fill to no color. create a red inner and outer glow. rasterize layer style, and create a layer mask with two angled gradients (as pictured)
layer 3. duplicate rectangle 1 and change fill to yellow, copy the layer mask from #2 and mask out the area inside the inner glow

now you can add noise as desired

I'm trying to append a few gifs together, which were cut from the same source.

Originally I was trying to figure out how to determine what the frame delay interval/framerate of the gifs were, thinking I'd just import the frames together then export them at the original framerate as a single gif.

I found an online tool that can change gif framerates, and that lists the framerate, so I used that to determine the framerates then imported the frames from each gif togther in GIMP and exported them at the OG framerate, but the exported gifs had errors, as see here

https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/276201142512517122/967450508300288061/Pokken_Siesmic_Toss.gif
or this
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/276201142512517122/967450542769078373/Pokken_Siesmic_Toss_3.gif
depending on what frame disposal I use.

Any ideas on what's going on or how to fix it, or what my workflow for appending gifs without added compression or quality loss or changes to frame timing should be?
