what is actually even wrong with this? Its meant to just look at quickly while being colorful and appealing. Do you all even have a solid reason other than hurr durr soulless xDdd

just one good reason that doesn't take this out of context and I'll gladly eat my ass. no experiences, no anecdotal shit, i mean a legitimate observation or analysis
>>

not op but this is FUCKING EVERYWHERE
It just shows "I am product #761" instead of "I am THIS product". It is the basic answer to "let's appeal to a younger audience", and it is annoying

>>398989
It is a drawing of a faggot with gay hair and a gay beard and gay glasses and it is meant to appeal to gay hipsters, therefore it is multilevel faggotry and that means it is gay as fuck?
>>
>>399054
yes, but also means that its quite neatly solving the problem by hitting the demographic, communicating the message and is therefore technically quite good design
>>
>>398948
the real answer is art directors who want work done quickly and fairly cheap.
Im not going to spend days drawing stuff with real ink and making layered digital photo manipulations for $150 but ill sure as shit fart out some vectors for a couple hours.

and y'know sometimes simple actually works best.
>>
>>398948
Why?
>it's fast
>it's cheap (i.e., requiring little skill or high-end software)
>it's P.C. (little blobby, soullessly happy, racially-ambiguous, gender-neutral and/or childlike looking "people" pose less risk of pissing somebody off)

because it's fake individualism. the art says "everyone is different and that's okay" except all these companies are using the same kind of style, muting its message of individuality by turning into cookie-cutter corporate schlock. so instead of promoting good feelings with a carefree representation of human bodies, it feels forced and alien. this kind of artstyle has been popular among hispanic modern artists for a while to the point it was already played out. to see it adopted by the corpos and basically used as a vehicle for marketing long after it was culturally "done" is rather funny. nobody with a brain cell to rub against their skull is fooled.

It's trendy, it's recognizable, it can be learned fairly quickly, and it is able to convey the emotions it needs to convey. Does Picasso suck because his work isn't "realist"? As graphic design evolves as an industry, and more and more people start learning it, there's going to be basics people are going to need to fall back on - and in terms of illustration, this one isn't so bad, since it allows for consistency to be achieved across teams with multiple contributors of different skill levels. Maybe it's overused, but the style in and of itself is totally fine.

I don't think it ever posits to promote individualism; on the contrary, I think it's about how conformity comes in all shapes and sizes. (I'm actually almost selling myself against this art style, but in this case conformity = opportunities to be part of a group with shared values.) It's really not about individuality, it's kinda about promoting the opposite, in fact - the positives of group dynamics. Unlike a lot of other trends, I can't ascribe this one to any single artist or designer. I agree it might be overplayed, but I've seen worse trends.

It particularly infuriates me because of the way it goes hand in hand with modern internet companies in general.
These designs always imagine a whimsical utopia where technology helps the blob people enjoy their lives more, but the practical reality is that when they crop up in the latest YouTube update, it's because Google has decided to break more features in the hopes that you'll sign up for YouTube Red.

They seem to propose to you a world where companies and services are here purely to help you, when in reality they're here to make a profit - often by offering an inferior service to the one they did 5 years ago. The incongruity between the image they're trying to project and the reality underlying it is infuriating even when you set aside personal aesthetic preferences.

Design is becoming a hideout for people who don't have talent, they're just well connected and want a 'cool' job. Agencies are havens for people who create bad art and then use their marketing connections to sell it as brilliant design.

When you see design getting simpler, more obvious, more basic, with less flair and creativity, it's not because it's the 'natural progression of visual language'. It's rich kids taking over an industry they covet and pulling up the drawbridge behind them.

I'm an oldfag graphic/product designer, 15 years in the industry, and I've had enough of agencies, I work exclusively for design and art departments of companies now, because they're still actually doing graphic design. Everyone I know abandoned or was forced out of agencies by zoomers with laptops who formed cliques rather than produced work.

there is huge difference in symbolic and stylization work done by someone who can or can't draw for real

you get lots of excellent illustration, icon and logo design work from poor slavic countries because they still make sure to teach that shit in art schools and universities

i find it funny that whenever "classical" drawing skills are mentioned /gd/ seethes like no other ('U DUNT NEED THAT'), despite how much illustration gets incorporated in graphic design,

literal fiverrr pajeets who bought their adobe license..

op here actually i forgot i posted this thread but i still think about it on and off i guess i cant articulate it very well but what annoys me about the style is how..

soulless it is? and because it's so 'easy to decipher' and 'corporate' and 'functional' and i know it's for profit and business and pleasing the common denominator.. but who decided this is what pleases the common denominator? it's an age old question i guess but IMO i'd appreciate any brand that went balls to the wall and you know had some SOUL i guess lol. this business aint for me ig ..guess imma be a broke artist.. but it isn't impossible and it shouldn't be! but since it's all about money, is that why no one wants to take 'risks'???

someone in the thread said it's cuz they were in therapy rooms and meant to make them feel warm n comfy.. i wish that's where it had stuck. cuz it feels like it had a soul there. you take it out of context and adapt it in the most fuck all ways for your business purposes .. what even is it anymore?

an example of an editorial illustration i thought was interesting because it isn't clean
>>
You cant imagine how i hate this rubbish
>>
>>403779
This is design, it's functional, it's not fine art where you huff your own farts about "soul" like the morons in this forum who think design is drawing cartoon frogs. Graphic design is overwhelmingly about commerce, and the marketing of it. If that offends your little fee fees, find another industry to pretend to be part of.
>>
>>403795
yeah but does it just have to be functional? Again I'm asking, what is 'functional' in say, branding and advertising - there are so many layers to it. You miss my point I think. Things can be functional and at the same time fun, artistic, innovative, whatever - not just laziness and carbon copies you know. But according to you, if that's all design is destined for then..yea not something I'd like to be a part of
>>
>>403818
Not him, I agree with this and IMO just like grandiose platitudes like 'less is more' can be used by lazy fucks to justify putting in the bare minimum amount of craftsmanship in anything and everything and excusing it with 'cost-optimization' and 'functionalism', so viewer can be consumed by capitalism's unrelatable ugliness which is there for only for short term profit and doesn't resonate to any sort of heritage worth giving a fuck.
And then things in world get trashed, vandalized and covered in graffiti, because nobody give a fuck. Materialist definition what is lacking I guess. The evil natzees (thankgodthatwedontspeakgerman) thought that even the ruins must be beautiful, that doesn't apply with le less is moar functional crap.

There's a great deal to promote catchy 2d design especially if it's female-made for political and business reasons. There's no objectivity in the copy cat art of Olimpia Zagnoli, because the public is sheep and they like seeing the same thing every ten years. Her style has been appearing since the 60s. Nothing new.
