>>397209The choice in color is really good, I really love the logo too. Seems really Asian to me as well witht he name and colors. Did you print these designs into an actual product or just edit into a photo of CBD oil? I'm curious as I pretty much made a coffee cup out of a few shaoes for a previous project.
>>397397I would have loved to do a real product printing but this is just a photoshop mockup using free assets I found on graphic burger (if I remember correctly)
>>397209That's really good! Did you use a mockup kit? Can you link me a copy?
>>397396Is that just solid black and white? The contrast looks really good
>>397225what do pirate ship and wheel (settings?) mean, also the top left one(home?)?those 3 and the pencil too are not clear on intent. do they meet the aims of design?
>>397396'u' looks too much like an 'o' with a piece missing and not like a 'u'. you have done the 'b' well and still kept the 'o'shape at the heart of it, this could also be done with the 'u'. 'm' needs a lot of work. if the 'g' is going to also feature as a monogram which is common, then it needs work, the first 2 'g's i don't like (they look like 9) and the 3rd seems off balance in the lower half.overall the 3rd is the best so far, i would play with the bap in the 'g' and 'b' to see if a different line would work better instead of stopping it at the 3rd 1/4 circle arc.
>>397604>i would play with the bap*gap
>>397601>wheel (settings?)yes>pirate shipsupposed to be just a normal ship but I see your point of association. Its the home button.>top left one(home?)?no. its like a connection status symbol. Green for all is good, yellow for needs update/attention, or red for disconnected/can't reach. The app is a mock idea for a game client connector. One master client. Accessible through your phone.ended up getting an A on the project despite all you said because my professor is a hack. I would have given me a C at most for this.

>>397764Take some simplistic panels designs and position them in a way to resemble mountains as the sun rises behind them?
Origami icons I'm working on
>>397797
>>397764make the mountains of the solar cells instead of having mountains. however, right now the logo is far too complex:>mountains: has nothing to so with sun or energy or solar energy>2 different designs: squares and interlocking circles.get rid of the mountains totally and start over. make something based on just the shape of a solar cell.
Nice move! Perhaps play with the color more. Yellow is rather strong. And try to connect the lines seamlessly between top and bottom of the image. I hope this helps.
>>397792>>397804Thanks a lot for the feedback. He didnt like the design anyway so im gonna make it according to his original paramiters
Any feedback? Not sure how I feel about the color
>>397817I like it, yeah but something about that shade of yellow feels off idk
>>397208having fun with kaleidoscoping things, trying to see if theyll make good shirt designs. thoughts? i like the font in general but maybe not for this project?
>>397797>>397798Brilliant! I would try to increase the white space of the folds so they read better at smaller sizes
>>397208Random shit, don't laugh at me.
I'm supposed to be designing a holiday card to send out to clients/employees. On one hand, it should be easy. There are so many resources on the subject that I should never come up short. On the other, there are so many resources that I don't even know where to start, and so many that have been done over the last century that I will struggle to come up with something new/better.
I've been on a month probation with some girl for a design agency and so far she has designed everything and barely had issues where as I messed up on two accounts and now I'm behind her by exactly two accounts, I've also been having issues since day one and they're just social media pieces for instagram, touching light, darkness, simple composition pieces.I'm absolutely convinced I'm not gonna get the job and I'm scared I might not even get paid as I could actually go homeless if this goes south. So pretty depressed currently.
>>397907thanks for the advice I did actually test it at smaller sizes, (A4 and such), and it seemed to work, my main concern is how it turns out in lazar cuts, since that is what the project is focused on. this image is just a test.

>>397817>>397834Maybe try less saturation/luminosity on the yellow? Yellow is a distracting color
Patches for a jacket. Any idea where i could send the the SVGs and get patches done in return?patch is composed of 理 (reason, logic) & 兵(soldier). It's a mind thing to remind me to always take the 2 sides of an argument, and be a "soldier of logic" The R in the hexagon is "Reason".
>>3980262 others. idk how to make them more detailed and at she same time avoid overloading things.
>>398027>>398026I like the one with the jet, but think the type could be a little more interesting. also, make sure that kanji shit makes sense within the language, nothing more LARP than walking around with a foreign language patch that doesn't make any sense
>>398028Thx for the kanji tip. Now i must find something that signifies "soldier of reason" and fits in 2 characters (which is probably non-existant). I'll try later with sage, scientist and words like that, but thanks for the tip.>mfw the kanjis on SuperDry outfits mean "hairdryer's official declaration">mfw i reveal this to my friends and their face goes as if someone poured H2SO4 on it.>and then i LOL in Japanese thinking about my JLPT N5 cancelled because of that damn covid.
does this look good /gd/? im a relative newcomer to graphic design and wanted to make some tshirts
>>398042Nice Shading. Try to add more details to have hints of the mouth. The font reminds me of the UI of EDGE, for N3DS(pic related)
>>398043does this look any better this is the font BTW https://github.com/froyotam/ferrite-core/
>>398044Ah yes, looks better. The different shades of grey imply the distance between statues and a sense of space. Well done.BTW what software are you using?
>>398046Photoshop is there a better tool for this type of stuff or is it just what your used too?
>>398047Honestly, I don't know anything about photoshop. Thought numerous times about cracking it, but worried to :(A) get the Hadopi (french piracy authority) to catch me(B) not find a correct key gen and/or get a Petya-style ransomware. However i got Inkscape at the moment. Pretty cool for simple graphics.
Did this thing. RCL is for "Reason, Calm, Logic" and 01A because it's the most important thing.
What's a good program for getting this kind of natural inking effect on your art? I do a lot of my drawing with pencil, pen, and paper, but I want this look with digital art. Is Krita any good? Are there good instructables for getting certain styles with it? I'm only familiar with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. I tried GIMP and hated the UI.
>>398042Looks autistic af.
>>397396
>>398058Illustrator, trace your image, add a thin outline and play around with strokes. Alternatively, you could complicate your life and convert the shape to a path, but you'd have to do a lot of cleaning then.
>>398049Lots of layers to this one. Here's my advice;Keep it simple, 3 colours at most, 4 is already pushing it.Since your text flow is circular on "0-1-A", make sure the "0-1-A" reads clockwise, this however does not apply to RCL as it's much larger and vertical so it reads from left to right. Also, if the "0-1-A" is the most important, why is it so bloody small? This logo will read really badly in smaller sizes. Stray further from those small grey spaces, they look "cool" but don't work well at all. The outlines on orange hexagons are larger on the inside, are the hexagons supposed to be cubes? If so, the shading makes no sense, if they aren't supposed to be cubes, the outlines are way too inconsistent which will confuse the viewer. The yellow pointers are supposed to signify what? Overall, given the colour scheme and font choice, as well ss geometrical composition of this logo, it reeks of some form of construction company logo perhaps? Very industrial colours overall. What i'm telling you is that this logo's colour choice is way too aggressive and in your face for something that means "reason, calm, logic". For those motifs, i'd use colder colours.
>>398078Thanks for advice, I'm now re-attempting a logo. I still wanna keep the 3 hevagons in an isometric fashion, but I can't make a perfect circular symmetry in inkscape. I'm using the grid and am a total beginner. And yes you are right, the logo is unreadable.
>>398077Damn, I was hoping to avoid having to mess with Illustrator for this and just do everything directly through a tablet.

>>398127I'm jealous of how good this is. Great font, great placement, and the colors are so sweet. I don't think I've ever thought to incorporate a shade of orange like that in the way you did. I dunno how you dunnit, anon, but this logo is perfect.

>>398171EP sounding good frengave it a listen
>>398197simplify. make sure it can work in black/white on any colour of the background. reduce the colour scheme to at most 3 or 4. consider how the logo would read from far away and put it into some photoshop mockups of different applications to see how it looks in context
>>398026are you sure you want to go with 兵 and not 士 if you want one character to symbolise "soldier"?either way perhaps a 4 character phrase might be better, because just having the 'li' for logic/reason will be clear to no one what the context is. 理兵 is chinglish.
>>398234kerning is off on the lettering and it looks unbalanced as one space is at the top and then the other spaces in the words are at weird angles.

First time posting on GDCouldn't find a SQT / QTDDTOT thread so asking hereI'm looking for a .psd blank map of europe with each country as a separate layerThere are maps available on wikipedia but I'd have to manually select all the non-contiguous parts of countries (e.g. islands) if I want to make a change to a country's color for example.I've tried searching for it on google but all the results I've found are shoddy quality or require payment. Is there a website that's a good resource for this kind of template?

>>398171not to be that retard, but how do you go about designing something like this? I see styles similar to this and always wonder. is it in a 3d modeling program or what?
>>397209Looks cool anon. I wonder if you could make the logo & the "Tempest" title larger or more prominent somehow, I feel like that should be the focal point instead of "CBD OIL.">>397210The layout works conceptually, but watch your kerning - the "A" and "V" in "SAVINGS" look a little far apart, as does the "N" and "G." I'd use a displacement map to further warp the text and make it feel like a poster, pic attached is what I mean. Also, not sure how much creative control you get, but the photo isn't the highest quality, I'd aim to get something more "composed" like a magazine/lifestyle photo, if possible. >>397213Very cool. Is this an actual logo being used somewhere?>>397225Some of these feel a little busy, like the book with the lock or the pirate ship, but I love the icon on the top right.>>397396I like it, lots of personality already. I like the middle one the best, wasn't hard for me to read when the other letters are closed. Cajun style cooking?>>397764I think the logo is a little busy, lots of thin lines, might be hard to distinguish when displayed at a small size. The best concept here is the solar panels on the mountain, but I think they could be blended better. I'd take the look of solar panels and see if I could make the shape of those match the shape of the mountains (maybe simplifying them, removing the orange highlights). Maybe try drawing something on paper to give yourself ideas could help, but I wouldn't entirely abandon some of the ideas you have here.>>397797>>397798>>397970Really cool, I agree with >>397907 depending on how large they're printed or displayed, but at a large size, it definitely works. I think my favorite stuff is the bottom row in the first picture. The laser cut wood piece is cool too, although I think the idea of "cutting" or "burning" isn't the most "origami" style in nature imo. Really professional quality overall, I think if these could somehow be displayed with actual folded paper it'd be 11/10.
>>397817What's the logo for? I think the dog design is fine, but maybe play with different colors, something more recognizable. The cropping part of the logo is clear to me.>>397836I don't know much about kaleidoscoping, but I feel that designs like this benefit when they either go for very simple and geometric, with consistent line width throughout the piece, or if they go for crazy complexity like a mandala. Yours is a middle ground, so it's hard for me to say. For the font, I think it's make sense to go for a more lose, hand drawn feel - and actual "hand drawn," not the fake stuff where every lowercase "a" looks the exact same.>>397908I think this looks cool, how is this done? Do you use Illustrator? I've never made a kaleidoscope type piece outside of free phone apps.>>397950Hey Anon, hope you make it, but don't fret if you don't get this specific job. I was in a similar boat not too long ago. Unfortunately, the pieces that are the standouts in your portfolio, and the pieces that you usually have to make as a newbie graphic designer are not always the same pieces. Grinding away at an unrelated job while working on a portfolio on the side is possible - it's hard, but you can make it.>>397980>>397996This is super cool, love the style - reminds me of a 90s aesthetic for the first and 80s for the second, but way more modern, in a good way. Do you have a version without the grain/noise? I think they'd make excellent prints.>>397981Is this a mock up, or is it printed at an angle/in perspective? Would love to see the full thing when you have it.>>398003"Illusions" like the distress/particles on your cover are always cool to me. A big part of that is always making sure the printers and publishers do a good job with the final product, but nothing is more eye catching to me - I like the cover to Malcolm Gladwell's The Tipping Point for this reason, I really think "fooling the eye" is gonna be a big trend and push in graphic design in the future.
>>398026>>398027Looks cool, what's your fashion sense like? I'm getting a cyberpunk feel too in addition to a military feel. But is the pattern on the AF7 patch something real? Looks like something you can scan but I've never seen that before.>>398042>>398044I think it looks cool. Personally, I don't think it needs the smiley face/date in the bottom right, and maybe not any text at all, but I think it'd look good printed large on a shirt. Maybe emphasize the negative space, remove the thin outlines around the edges, or add some texture.>>398049I agree a lot with what >>398078 said. Is the logo just meant to represent the words "Reason, Calm, Logic," or something more? Depending on the point of the logo, I think it's okay if certain elements are more of a design or texture detail vs. a focal point of the logo. >>398058Personally I think that look just comes from using a scanner on ink & paper drawings, and pushing the contrast. Doesn't even need to be a super high quality scanner.>>398088lol>>398125A little busy. The detail and sharpness of a lot of the elements looks like a lot is being lost when laid out at small sizes, but I know next to nothing about designing card games. Are you approaching this from a game design perspective?>>398127Looks cool, I like the design. It's clean and focused, but the resolution and rasterization is apparent. >>398171I like the design, but the face image is a little low-res compared to the text. Love the music btw, makes me think of Toonami and Adult Swim bumps.>>398197Love it. You look like you must have an artist/illustrator background, but what are you drawing this in? The rasterization is apparent.>>398234Love the logo, love the type, it's great. The point about kerning could be made, but I didn't even notice. It's like the B&W covers of Albert Camus books. (Also made me realize that while I'm giving feedback to everyone here, I'm probably just average on /gd/ - does anyone here like this feedback?)
>>399704>>399705>>399707I wrote this feedback, but I'm attaching something of my own so that /gd/ can get a sense of what I make and take what I say with a grain of salt. It's key art I made for a friend's sparkling wine, I did the photography, photo editing, and layout, but I didn't design the bottle. I think the biggest mistake I made was the heavy grain, any feedback is appreciated.
>>399708One more picture from the same series.
>>399704>"Tempest" title larger or more prominent somehowyep, should do that>Is this an actual logo being used somewhere?no, I just made it for fun>although I think the idea of "cutting" or "burning" isn't the most "origami" style in nature imoyeah same, though that was the point of the assessment, and it turned out pretty great>>399705>"Illusions" like the distress/particles on your cover are always cool to me.yes, it's a very good quality free mockup, would love to see it as a real product >>399707>It's like the B&W covers of Albert Camus books.wow, those are nice. also, your feedback is much appreciated>>399708>>399709very nice. I love the grain, especially with the yellow/orange backdrop.
>>399708First off i'm loving the colors and the overall lighting, and the grain works just fine on your second picture. My main "irk" is the squiggly cheesy disclaimer which kind of steals the entire show.if you could remove that and do something like pic related i reckon that'd be good
>>399741edit: no idea what happened to the colors and why the text got blurred, use your imagination and pretend it isn't.
>>398284What is this? And what was used to generate it?>>398286IDK what you're going for haha, maybe start with a clear goal in mind?>>398381It's a cool design, and very cohesive in style despite so many different elements-- mockups are often used as a crutch (I mean I do that), but I think your design can stand on its own, it's good.>>398383It's a good start, where do you plan on going with this? It's different than what you have so far, but are you familiar with Jesse Treece? He's a collage artist that uses paper, so the clearly defined lines (like papercut) adds to the feel of his pieces. >>398387>www.manymuggles.comAwesome website, did you make this by yourself? It's working perfectly for me, and I love the style. You've really made a ton of options available.>>399718The display looks great - are you studying design somewhere? The geometric forms really work well in the woodcut pieces, which I wouldn't have guessed based on the concept of laser-cut wood x origami.>love the grain, especially with the yellow/orange backdrop. Thanks, the goal was to evoke both the current "seamless" colored backdrop trend, while also maintaining a more nostalgic appeal, but I feel I may have gone too far, esp. for the first one.>>399741>>399742I agree, the grain on the second image works better (it's less intense, and helps break up the "imperfections" on the solid background). And thanks for the concept you mocked up, you're right that the squiggly text sorta steals the show, I did want a unique focal point, but it might take too much away from the bottle & glass.Attaching another image from the set, this one w/o grain so you can see pros/cons (I did a color pass to figure some stuff out, but need to go back, probably some focus stacking.) I'm still trying to figure out how to make these images more cohesive, but also still allow each piece to be differentiated in composition and identity. The idea was to keep it fun, but I may be straying too far from that
>>399741>>399742>>400017Ooo my colors got messed up because I fucked up the color space, but hopefully the screenshot attached looks a bit better.
I have a bunch of frames in Ai. Whats the most efficient way to animate them? Specifically whats the best way to transfer all of them to another program i.e Photoshop or Premiere.
I know tracing doesn't require any talent or design knowledge but im a little proud
>>398387"Fill me up, big boy."Very nice. The ui is clean on customization.
>>399708>>399709i think the lighting is poor, first pic is too dark and you cannot read the bottle, plus the design of the bottle is too dark so the flowers on the left are too illegible for an advert. the "esp" of "responsibly" is also illegible. 2nd pic, the glass is too bright but the bottle (left side) is too unlit.
>>400223Thats good! the next step would be to correct the color thats inbetween the eybrow and some of the outer line work. You could wither mess aroudn with the settings or compensate by drawing some by yourself
Trying out an idea for a series of postcards, first one being maximalist
>>400216What are you looking to export to? I think it'd be easiest to do this in Photoshop with the animation timeline option, just stacking all the frames in a single composition, if I were to do this in Premiere, I'd probably still have to cut out each frame individually in Photoshop anyway.>>400248I see what you're saying, the pics are very dark, and that was an attempt to "save" a few shots and focus on the silhouette, since you could see through the bottles and read the labeling/text on the backside. I only realized this on the second day of shooting, and used a steel wool brush to rub off the text to make for cleaner shots and subsequently had those shots brighter. But does it stay interesting with brighter, more even lighting? (Like >>400018) Personally I like the darker look, but I realize it may not work.
tryin to make some money off /pol/
>>400280>But does it stay interesting with brighter, more even lighting? (Like >>400018)i would say that the focus of that shot is a bottle and not a branded bottle, or at least the branding is not a focus of the picture. if it is advertising then the branding needs to be much more prominent and obvious for a brand no one knows. i think the left side hummingbird and flowers in >>400018 don't look good in the lighting, but there is a flat panel on the face of the bottle yeah?, so the light changes at the join of the flat face? it's pedantic nitpicking for sure, but it is noticeable.
I need to redo my college year( bullshit degree) so I decided to devote all my time to self learn graphic design few days ago. Right now I’m in the process of ingesting all literature and right exercises I can get my hands on. I created this alongside learning just to get things moving. The premise is a image of a sunset in a garden - paying homage to Japanese ambient music. It also symbolizes “noise” sampled from nature. The hardest part - I have no knowledge or familiarity of diff fonts, it ties my hands creativity-wise. I’m going do focus now on familiarizing myself with typography to be able to do more with it.
How is this coming along? Unfortunately the video I'm trying to rotoscope is pixelated and dark as hell, so its a little tough. Everything that is blue I've done today, everything else was about 3 days worth of workI'm a bit rusty, but I've been trying to get back into animation, even making money with it if I can. Plus it would be pretty cool to bring back that 70s / 80s rotoscoping animation style
>>400306>i would say that the focus of that shot is a bottle and not a branded bottleThat's partially intended for the images - the wine is a sparkling wine, but the shape & size of the bottle is unique for the space - so while I think the labeling adds to the product story, I wanted some of the focus to be the silhouette, the foil, and the overall color. If that pulling attention away from the illustration though, you have a good point.>i think the left side hummingbird and flowers in >>400018 # don't look good in the lightingI see it now, yeah I could try turning down the highlight to focus on the graphic, might be a "nitpick" but it's a good observation, it was meant to add depth, but I don't want to lose detail or sacrifice clarity, and it should be possible since I also want to do some focus stacking to bring the closest part of the bottle into sharper focus.>>400335Looks good. You have an interesting background texture, but I think you could apply a displacement map or similar to the text/artwork. I attached a pic of a really dramatic example, but essentially just making the text and art look like it was really printed on the cardstock - maybe not even all the elements, but the artwork and album title/artist name in a more "textured" style could look interesting.>>400340Looks sick, you could probably take this and make it work in multiple different art styles already. One thing I've noticed is that old 70s/80s rotoscope animation (Bakshi, Heavy Metal, etc.) always looked "slow" to me, like it could be sped up, at the cost of more time animating & less time to appreciate the artwork of each frame.
Gift for a friend.
>>400347Thanks a lot for the compliments and thoughts on my animation! I probably have 15 key frames left, and than possibly even more in between frames. I've actually sat on a lot of those classics, waiting for the perfect rainy day (with mushrooms). Lol. This is 24 or 30 fps I believe. Doing tue hands is going to suck, qnd could end up really badly. I wonder if I should make the skateboard one size bogger than the general outlines? Should I use the line tool instead of the brush? Also, how could you see me coloring this? The video is shot in rain, so I might already have some puddle action to work with. As far as technical effecta go, I could definitely experiment with trail animations. Basically the classic ripple effect, maybe 5 - 10 frames?Aaand one more thang. I think I should do some sexy little frmale ice skater doing a trick. I cant draw girls for shit
>>400347Also, your tenplate looks like a movie poster! Not bad for stamp / texture poster :)
>>400354Ha, I didn't make that image sample, it's a purchasable Photoshop action, but you can get the the same effect through displacement maps. Regarding that, depending on what you use as the displacement map, you can either displace the image to "adhere" to a surface, or display the text/artwork to have a sort of "bleeding ink" effect.
Does this look phallic to you?
>>400358
>>400358>>400359Not especially. Even if you told me to look for a penis there I'd have to force myself to see it. It just looks like headphones
>>400347 >>400335Thats a great idea! I initially planned this with the use of textured paper when printing, so the displacement looks good on it. Thanks!
>>399015this is amazing i love it
>>397980I dig the grainy look.
>>398001>>398424>>398432>>399246>>399705>>400587Oh damn I forgot to check this thread and never saw that people were nice to me. Thanks everyone. As for the graininess, I do that in a lot of my work on purpose. I like to make stuff that looks old, and the grain helps to make stuff look less like they're just big ol' shapes.
>>400340impossible or treflip
Looking for a way to replicate this trick on Krita
>>401372So far, all the hints I had were:- set the 1st pic's (thumbnail) lower level to 210- set the 2nd pic's (secret pic) upper level to 214- create a mask between them (from which type? I tried color, filter and transform but to no avail)- fill the 2nd pic with grid pattern- save and set the brand new png's gamma with TweakPNG to the lowest value possible (0.00045 I guess)- open in browser and see the magic happening (or not)
>>401375- merge layers- the value is 0.023Jeez, I forgot some steps...
im probobly gonna get my asshole torn out for posting this but this is my most recent "work">>398286>>398448>>397213COOL : )

I did enjoy this a lot, its super magical girly and pink, prepare your eyes.I'm sort of new to all of this, graphic design, web building, coding, and I know I have some work to do, especially with seo, and ranking, but this is my project so far! graphics are made by a mix of me and my best friend, I did the coding and theme. https://cutsewcute.com/homepage

Can we get some critique on this logo for a Hearts of Iron mod? How could we improve it? Should we toss it into the trash instead?
>>403322Here's another different take on the logo. Which one should we keep working on?
>>403322>>403323No idea what Hearts of Iron is, but the top one looks like a more serious/ traditional gun thing. the second one looks like some wacky fallout retro mid century sign. The second one looks better than the first, but I am not sure what look you are going for.
>>403328Right, should've been more descriptive. Hearts of Iron is a grand strategy PC game about World War 2. Iron Grip on the other hand is a mod for Hearts of Iron based on the alt-history concept of an Axis victory in WW2. Starting in 1954, Iron Grip is a more lighthearted take on a nazi victory, the mod being developed by a /vst/ team. The first logo is based on the main conflict of the mod, between the USA and Germany, and as such it features the main handguns of the countries. The second one, however, was inspired by a mid century aesthetic and it has an ironic value considering our goal is for a nuclear war to erupt during the game, and to contrast our mod with other ones that have a more bleak aesthetic. One of the main weaknesses the team faces is precisely the lack of an established logo, and that's why se are asking /gd/ for advice because, as you can see, we aren't really gifted in the graphic design department.
>>400302You'll make bank off of boomers if you sell these as shirts.
>>400350This one is really comfy
>>403330the second one is better, but I would mess with the font. the white letters you have now are more like a tiki-natural look
>>403334Nice, gonna work on it then. Thank you
>>397213imagine the smell
doing some movie posters and shit. trying to have enough stuff to put a portfolio together.

Proxima Centauri travel posters
>>403174Its very nice and I would prefer it ova the standard design. Still companies expect a family friendly torch. If you clientele is not a gamer community, or into paranormal or horror,...Ok what else the main work was done by the photographer, but that's not critique that's usual for gd. Ok it looks all very nice and clean, and it may failed the expectations of certain companies, but I like it much, but ... Lets imagine the companies is like me and like it very much then. 2 of you highlighted text blocks are opaque black transparent, one if full black, and messes with the optical concept on the second glance.>>397209Thats what im working on...
>>403426
>>403427
>>403428I'm currently working on this one. Trying to give it some more detail so it doesn't come off so simple
