Since it's a corporation nobody feels any sort of accountability, so rationality never factors into the decision, and so you end up with everyone chasing the highest sticker prices in the hope that will automatically result in higher quality when in fact they could just toss a bunch of chimps in a room with paint and easels and achieve similar results for less than $300. Less facetiously, just have a bunch of people trying things for low pay until one of them comes up with something satisfactory that you can give the big bucks to.
