This is a general dedicated to the design of flags, also known as vexillography.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VexillographyTalk about flags, design flags, critique other anons flags, and of course, discuss how you could do so much better if you were allowed to redesign your countries flag.Resources:>rules for flag designhttps://howlettstudios.com/articles/2018/10/10/5-rules-of-flag-design>how to break those ruleshttps://howlettstudios.com/articles/2018/10/10/5-rules-of-flag-design>why city flags are the worsthttps://youtu.be/pnv5iKB2hl4>basic flag designer if you dont have access to image editorshttps://flag-designer.appspot.com/#d=0&c1=7&c2=6&c3=3&o=6&c4=7&s=11&c5=5There seem to be several flag threads up at the moment, so lets give this a go and see if there is enough interest for a full time general
>The flag of the Seychelles flag consists of five different coloured bands (blue, yellow, red, white, and green) starting from one end and diverging towards the other end. The oblique bands symbolize a dynamic new country moving into the future. The colour blue depicts the sky and the sea that surrounds the Seychelles. Yellow is for the sun which gives light and life, red symbolizes the people and their determination to work for the future in unity and love, while the white band represents social justice and harmony. The green depicts the land and natural environment.
>At the time of its adoption, the South African flag was the only national flag in the world to comprise six colours in its primary design and without a seal and brocade. The design and colours are a synopsis of principal elements of the country's flag history. The colours themselves have no essential meaning.>According to official South African government information, the South African flag is "a synopsis of principal elements of the country's flag history." Although different people may attribute personal symbolism to the individual colours or colour combinations, "no universal symbolism should be attached to any of the colours." The only symbolism in the flag is the V or Y shape, which can be interpreted as "the convergence of diverse elements within South African society, taking the road ahead in unity".
>The black and gold design on the flag of Maryland is the coat of arms from the Calvert line. It was granted to George Calvert as a reward for his storming a fortification during a battle (the vertical bars approximate the bars of the palisade).>The red and white design is the coat of arms of the Crossland family from South Crosland in West Yorkshire in England, the family of Lord Baltimore's mother, and features a cross bottony with the red and white sides of the cross alternating. Since George Calvert's mother was an heiress, he was entitled to use both coats of arms in his banner.
I guess I'll post some of my own shitty fictional flags
>>386154those colors hurt my eyes but it's better than the basic bitch seal-on-blue flag that they have now
Just made this. The flag is meant to represent an isolated industrialist faction that lives at the bottom of the ocean. With the center charge, I tried to evoke a sense of mechanical industry, without doing something as overt as a gear or a crab made of circuits or something.I'm not super sold on the colors but I cant think of another combination that would work well. What do you guys think?
>>386349why not make the entire background blue?it's pretty cool, but all I can see is the coronavirus
>>386866>why not make the entire background bluea few reasons1. I feel it would make the flag a little less visually interesting especially since its a setting where the world is flooded and a lot of other flags have blue - however I acknowledge that the center charge is the more important part of the flag, symbolically, so even if it was just on a blue field it could still get the message across.2. the edges represent the deep trenches of the oceans3. I feel like the angled edges give it a kind harsh feel, which I feel goes well with the faction they're associated with. That being said I don't like black as a color for flags so I wouldn't mind an excuse to get rid of them. If you have any suggestions for alternate designs I'd love to hear em>all I can see is the coronavirusHE KNOWS, SHUT IT DOWN
Black and white flags are the best.

>>388271Damnit, wrong image
>>388274Idk, imo flags should strictly be the absolute most basic of shapes like stripes and circles and stars. The point of them is to be seen from very far away and immediately recognizable, not inspected up close like a seal or crest
>>388276Ok thanks, I will keep the bird though as it's got some symbolism to it.

Reddit's been pretty busy coming up with possible Hong Kong's flags since the protests - at least for something that's better than a bunch of writings...the most here seem pretty meh. (the royal blue-gold one is alright though - my personal favourite)
>>388473Meanwhile, a newspaper back in Hong Kong actually made a contest for the best redesign - pic related by a guy named Wiliyum got the most winning votes:https://www.passiontimes.hk/4.0/voteflag.php>The Kapok (flower of Cotton tree) is known as the hero tree in Cantonese, which symbolizes the weight of Hong Kong in east Asia; its flowers are unscattered, and it is a symbol of the home country of all the people in the world; the eighteen stamens symbolize the people of the eighteen districts.>The golden cloud and thunder pattern arches the kapok, Hong Kong founds the nation to follow the people, inherits China. The blue background symbolizes the ocean and echoes the British rule.

What do we think of this flag?
>>386053Whats a good image editor I can use ?I've been using MSpaint this whole time.
>>390024lame just like the flag of the state
>>388003I can see where you're coming from, but the commonalities between those flags (counterchanging - i.e an object is divided as the background with reversed colours- and quartering -divided into quarters with different arms in each quadrant-) are pretty common features in heraldry, notably British tradition of which all of these derive. Not very specific to any of these 3 flags.
>>388274The colours need some work. Try changing the eagle to something that'll stand out against the background (possibly a pale colour like white or yellow, etc). Right now everything is too dark. Flags don't have to comprise strictly of basic geometric shapes, but should at least be identifiable.

Another Virginia state flag mock up
>>388274Still pretty shit. It's just an Imperial Aquila that's had its wings clipped, in front of three mountains of shit. However, I took a quick try at redesigning it.
>>388271>>388274>>391421Furthermore, as other anons have mentioned, the colors are really gross, so here's a black and white version that can also be used to easily try out different colors.I'm by no means a professional. Experimentation is important. Keep trying. I suggest you study the fundamentals of flag design. There are a few links in the OP that should help you out.
>>391376>>391407I think they're both pretty damn good, design wise. Though, the imagery of a spear through a crown is a bit... crude.
>>390024needs more bullet holes
>>391445>>391423The spear through the crown is meant to be a minimalist interpretation of the current flag.

>>386053I'm from Cornwall and this is our flag. Our county was originally treated as one giant port for England and where a LOT of smuggling went on.nobody ever talks about it but it is where pirating was first documented. the whole county hated England and the taxes they demanded on trading.. so they became a black market “state”, if you will, and generally broke all manner of laws regarding trade, started to steal from English ships and created their own pirate flag - a black and white version of the england flag. a fuck you to paying taxes and a declaration that Cornwall is pirate country and will take what it wants.being a tiny corner of the world and no army it was quickly squashed by england and remains a part of is but if you ask any local they still to this day want independence like Wales and Scotland. Will never happen though.the flag is still used to this day and its meaning is confused and lost.Cornish pirates are the true original pirates of the world. and I think our flag is cool as shit

Flags for a fictional Australian Political Faction, thoughts?
>>393644The first flag is the best one, the last two don't really have much in the way of semblance to Australian heraldry. Fascist regimes embraced the very modern aesthetics to demonstrate themselves as forward thinking movements. That should be what a fascist AU flag goes for. What you've created is rather generic.

Related Vexillology:>the flag belongs to Harold Thomas, an Aboriginal artist who designed it in 1971 for his people's civil rights movement.>Mr Thomas retains the full copyright - a status clarified by a legal battle in the 1990s - and he has leased reproduction rights to different companies over the years.>Most recently, in 2018, he signed a deal with a firm called WAM Clothing. It gives the company exclusive global rights to use the flag on clothing, physical media and digital media.>Unlike previous lease holders, the company has aggressively enforced these rights. Several Aboriginal organisations - including not-for-profits - have found this out the hard way.LOL PWNDArticle: bbc.com/news/world-australia-49315063I always like this flag clean and distinct
Fictional Bosnian flag I made a few months ago for fun. Tricolor due to the Slavic background, but also representative of the three ethnicities living there. The crest is a historical reference to the coat of arms, representing the river Bosna and in extension the kingdom it used to be.Blue - Catholics; the rivers, the origins.Red - Orthodoxy; family, blood, conflicts.White - Muslims; the sky, the new coat. Also, I have no clue about vexillography or making flags. It was just something I made for fun, so it probably isn't anything great.

>>391145>>391145upper left hand section too small. colors pretty horrible looking: not bright or energetic, like bile sick. nut/cog is a cliche symbol, would an industrialist really want his symbol to be a cog and not something symbolic of the outcome of his industry. musk is focused on the results/benefits, midwits are focused on the methods. what would be the outcome your fictional person really stands for?lines of the cog are too thin/colors have too little contrast with the black

>>395514thanks>>387131>These feel really minimalist and "company logo to appeal to 20 year old feminists"-like.What would you recommend in order to avoid that, while maintaining the symbolism of the imagery? Most of my graphic design experience comes from simplistic logo designs, but it feels like for an authentic looking flag you need to maintain a balance between being simple and recognizable, and being complex enough to derive a unique meaning and convey a unique aesthetic.
