>>96086881I'm supposed to do the salary negotiation for my first post-uni gig in a few days (mainframe junior dev).Do I lowball the average or what? I've got prior work experience but it was FAGMAN interning and it doesn't seem realistic to ask the amortized 90k for a job where they're training me from scratch (and it seems even less realistic that they'd agree to that). My price floor is 64k and that's just using the 30% rule on area rent (I have no friends to do a roommate situation with)Adding to this actually: I know you're supposed to move around to daisy-chain pay increases, but how feasible is that with mainframe dev?

I got hired on to a small but promising startup as a senior full-stack engineer. My immediate coworkers are my boss, who is another full-stack engineer, and a junior developer. Well shortly after two months of working there my boss left and I basically inherited his tech stack and devops flow. I'm the only full stack engineer taking on whats essentially a hybrid of a hardware company and cms platform.I've been working here for 5 months now and have had to put in a lot of time to fix devops and feeling ready to ask for a better compensation seeing as our other senior dev left suddenly.Only problem is we're stretched thin. I know my next higher up is also running around putting out fires all day, so it feels weird to ask but also well within my right.

New hire here, need some advice. My boss is way too busy for me. He gave me a bunch of projects but I've been roadblocked on all of them since I don't know the proper procedure to handle them. It's a really busy period for him but I've been just sitting here for 8 hours not knowing what to do. I know I shouldn't bug him this much but I have no idea on the deadline for these projects and they're all easy fixes so I just want it out of the fucking way already. I've gave him potential solutions but I've been left on read and when I do get a hold of him, he gives me like 15mins which isn't enough time or he'll give me a new task where I get roadblocked AGAIN.Any advice? Should I just chill out? I just don't want them to think I'm lazy and not doing anything but I feel so useless when my team is hustling and I'm just on my couch watching Stop Hibari Kun.

>>96092494If you don't already, consider getting the following certifications: PL-300 and DP-500. These should just pad your resume to have you stick out from other applicants. You should also have a 4 year degree. The "piece of paper" is a filter hiring managers across the board use. Unless you're an autodidact savant you're not going to be getting a job (US). If you have any conferences near you, you should attend them and network through them. If you still can't get a job with all of these you should hang up the coat and go hell desk.

>>96087739I want to be rich so I can take drugs and coom every day without having to think of tomorrow
I'm so sick of not having money. I make $26/hr which translates to $44,200 per year after taxes. $12k goes into my rent (significantly below average for my city), and $5,400 goes into my vehicle (significantly below natl average). What the fuck am I supposed to with the rest of that paltry amount...? It sucks stressing over whether or not you can go out to eat with friends, how getting new tires fucks your budget up for 2 months, or buying new boots (after 4 years) is a *real* decision making process. Fuck this shit. I felt guilty about spending $35 on a concert ticket and $160 on a new phone.
>>96093964This is kinda my goal right now, too. Gonna be hard as fuck though, shit is competitive and my current small Midwest job isn’t gonna be nearly enough. I’m in my late 20s and I already feel like I’m running out of time.

>>96094912Congrats. How old are you?>By the time I will have to move I will have about 12k savedOnly count the money you have, not the money you will have. What "we" pay for rent is irrelevant to you unless you have a location - geographically rent can vary dramatically if you're moving to the Bay Area, CA vs Bumfuck Nowhere, MA. You can check apartments.com to get a general idea about your location, but these listings are large complexes with "amenenties" as their justification for charging you more than you need to pay. Figure out the neighborhood you want to be, and go wardriving, literally. Find some landlord who has an extra house and plopped a sign in his front yard. Lots of places don't actually advertise on the internet, they go boomer-style and put a phone number on a sign. Those *can* be better, just depends on your landlord. Is he next door? Is he retired? Is he a greedy fuck and owns 12 other places? etc etcAnother good way is contact leasing offices and see if they have anyone trying to sublease their place, often times subleasors will sublease slightly below what the actual rent is because they *have* to move for work or something. Might only be 1-200 bucks, but hey. Craigslist can also be good for subleases, but I think everyone has pretty much migrated to FB Marketplace for renting/sublease/roommates.

And like doing some basic math, 1600 is easily doable even without utilities because I won't pay for cable or anything stupid like that except internet. and low 2 thousands might be doable with utilities included but it's hard to tell if they are since most places don't advertise anything like that at least on zillow. Am I just unhireable? I didn't have any internships but I went to a top 10 university, took a broad range of applicable classes, held leadership in clubs, and I write unique cover letters, but I can't even get a damn interview. I've applied to faang, I've applied to game dev studios, I've applied to regular SE positions, hell I applied to defense companies and Raytheon flat out said "no." I seriously thought I'd have a chance to at least get an interview there since foreigners wouldn't apply, but apparently notIs the industry so flooded that it's just impossible to find half decent work nowadays or is something wrong with me? Grads from my uni normally have a 6 figure starting salary but I've been looking around 65-70k and up and still nothing
>>96096268
>>96096268I had no internships and a 3.0 GPA from a mid school. Graduated 2022 and it took until late october to get an offer. Of the ~300-400 applications I put out I got maybe 10 interviews max. Only got my job because they only had one dev at the time who is their "lead" and he has no degree so he didn't care about education just as long as I vaguely knew what he was talking about when discussing what he does. shoulda been a red flag getting an interview and offer within 2 weeks of applying in this job market but I needed to pay loans. You just gotta keep trying. Only takes getting lucky once.
>>96095277enjoy crackheads coming up to your makeshift cardboard house and rats/roaches.
>>96096268>I didn't have any internshipsThanks for putting the most important information first. The rest of your post is a rambling cope.

>>96096365What if I brought concrete down there though

Who can help you out, who can you reach out to that can get your foot in the door for you?Post your resume.
>>96096394Sir but have you been only eating rice onions and lentils? Do you even know how to buy the butter by the kilogram?
>>96095195Ah, okay, that makes sense.>>96093849While I interned, I didn't get the full time offer from that internship, and I honestly fluked into getting it in the first place. I'm not trying to sell myself short but I also just am a terrible/inexperienced programmer. I might've been able to lay low until I got the swing of things in FAGMAN if I'd gotten hired full time, but I'm not bringing anything at all to the table here. I'll pitch 80 though knowing my actual limit's 64 and hope his counteroffer is anything above that.
i think my exam notes document with 15,000 words was a bit overkill for this 60 multiple choice exam
>>96096394>these indians are either trolling or retardedThe worst part is, I don't even think they're Indian, bro. Look at their "recommendations" for "buying" a "house".Here's their "solutions">70 year old dilapidated shithole in Kansas>Live in a trailer park with meth heads and niggers>Buy a "plot" of "land" for $5k and "own" a micro"home">"Buy" a condo (hint: condo is not a home)44k fucking SUCKS, and I'm not even doing that bad as some people. Granted I am single incel, and the only people I see "making it" are couples who are swimming in debt. If I could opt out of this ratrace and be a NEET I would definitely consider it, but I have to pay rent so wagie away I must.
DO NOT do salesforce. DO NOT go to cs for four years just to end up shoveling bottom-of-the-barrel shitty SAASware at a ‘consultancy’ (slave silo) serving idiots and rejects. do NOT compromise and do NOT settle for this.
the public school situation is so bad here that the punjab immirants are ending their non-christian kids to the christian private school
>>96096482the recommendations are so strange it has to be foreigners of some sort. people that live in the US understand why these stupid suggestions do not work for most people
>>96096482You are wasting $18000/yr and a singlewide trailer is $30k. If you did that or the shed you would stop wasting all your money away and be able to save for a downpayment. Go to the homesteading general on /out/ they do the furnishing shed thing all the time after buying 5-20 acres so they can save up to build a full sized house. Then you can keep the shed as a guest house or rent it out to hunters in the fall.
Worked hell desk 2 years ago for a large company (non-msp). It was comfy until my manager was yelling at me for mistakes he himself carelessly made. Took it like a champ but it was basically trickle down management. Told him to fuck off one day and got fired. Eventually that manager got fired for clocking in extra hours and not doing shit (basically had me deploy most laptops). Came back to same company after he left, low and behold a new manager whose even worse and left it due to a family emergency. Now the position is open again, should I go back? I managed to get a degree in compsci during vacant time but no interviews after 6 - 8 months of applying to dev jobs.
>>96096574Look for sysadmin or IT technician jobs at that point no reason to go back to help desk. Then you can weasel over to development by going to devops first from sysadmin then from devops into software.

>>96096747>You must be kidding kek How do you expect to negotiate if you're acting like a woman?I don't mind talking to the generally, I just meant 80k itself seemed high locally for an entry level position. It's about 25 grand over the local median income for that area (household is 110k) but it's just around average, it seems. I was going to pitch 70 but as that other anon mentioned I'll shoot high and work down from there.
>>96096361that's what i'm hoping, at least>>96096370so what, i'm fucked for life? that isn't useful input>>96096409i worked for the associate dean and he said i was one of the best TAs he had and he'd be willing to write me a grad school rec letter if i applied. i have friends who work at boeing, milwaukee, a vr company, facebook, etc but they're all from my year and barely in entry positions. the rest of the professors i got close with were all heavily research oriented so i don't know if anybody would even be useful. my best bet would be the guy who works for a vr place since it's a smaller startup. i have a friend who did an EE internship and said the company was looking to hire on the down lowmaybe i should start including course numbers for all my courses since the uni is supposed to be well known. idki'm working on setting up a portfolio page for projects i've done and am currently working on

>>96096837bro buys a new ink cartridge everytime he prints his resume
>>96096553Explain how I'm going to buy 5-20 acres, and a $30k trailer and save money? This costs more than renting (12k/year not 18). And for the record, the problem isn't saving money, it's earning it. I just googled trailer homes and the cheapest was 80k across 4 websites. guess i'm going to /out/ too see wtf you're talking about
>>96096995Maybe he has white ink and prints on dark cardstock
I just saw this at the end of a job app, is this the HR's ATS keywords? You have to hit all 5 of these on your resume to pass??
>>96097049Sounds like PMP to me
>>96097027How many years are you going to rent a studio apartment for?
>you seem down sonI'm just tired
>>96096837you should totally see if the associate dean would just write an overall recommendation for you and just attach that along with your cover letters. Can't hurt. Also going to grad school might the move since you could probably find an internship which would further help.
>>96096910i'm heavily considering grad school. i wasn't sure if it was what i wanted to do since i managed to make it through undergrad without accumulating any debt thanks to scholarships, but i am interested in either graphics or robotics research and if nothing pans out that might be the way to go, i've heard a 1 year break isn't too terrible for grad school apps, especially since i plan on doing projects>>96096976>move college shit to the bottom and get rid of relevant courseworkgotcha. maybe i'm too used to trying to tailor for internships from my early years in uni. so expand on work experience, shove it right to the top, middle is presumably skills, then projects i've done in and out of school, then at the bottom is college shit that might be relevant if there's room? i'm guessing that's just the activities that show leadership/team positions>ping directlyi didn't realize this actually worked, i'll be doing this from now on, thanks a million for the tip>>96097159i've been meaning to contact him about some research stuff so honestly i might see if i can bring it up when i talk to him next. i've also heard that getting internships right out of college isn't unheard of and one of my mech e friends got one so i'm assuming it's actually not weird so maybe i can start with that too>>96096995i think the tables are clean looking>>96097035...oh, word is in dark mode lmao
what is this locals only horseshit. What's the problem with me moving two hours. I want to fucking kill myself

>>96096634>IT technicianThat's literally the same as help desk, but system admin sounds better but I would have to get CCNA or whatever certs to grow when I already have a CS degree. How have developers just learned to just cope with the isolation from coding? Developer jobs don't sound so comfy anymore when you constantly stay on top of things (self study), now that it's even harder to get.
>>96090868>If you think paying retards straight out of college 500k+ to sit on their ass all day was a normal jobmarketWhat's the point of college if I can skip college and go straight to work and get a six figure job after having the appropriate experience
