I got hired on to a small but promising startup as a senior full-stack engineer.
My immediate coworkers are my boss, who is another full-stack engineer, and a junior developer. Well shortly after two months of working there my boss left and I basically inherited his tech stack and devops flow. I'm the only full stack engineer taking on whats essentially a hybrid of a hardware company and cms platform.
I've been working here for 5 months now and have had to put in a lot of time to fix devops and feeling ready to ask for a better compensation seeing as our other senior dev left suddenly.
Only problem is we're stretched thin. I know my next higher up is also running around putting out fires all day, so it feels weird to ask but also well within my right.

From my experience, certificates without experience on the job wasn’t too helpful but job experience + certificate was fantastic especially if the certificate was earned while in the job since it shows initiative and a real passion for that topic. Hey, so I am a self taught dev that got his first job at a debt management agency.

I am creating custom code in C# for writing libraries that extend the capabilities of the software we are using.

I am also extending, or ATM helping to extend the capabilities of the software by automating processes and enhancing the functionality of the software.

Sometimes I make SQL queries.

More or less I have web dev experience and I am teaching myself C# while commuting from and to the town by train and Computer Science on the weekends with OSSU.

Currently I am on probation, which will end this December, and I can also stay home every Monday and work from there.

I am earning 2000€ net.

What should be my additional steps be in two years so I can earn more?

New hire here, need some advice. My boss is way too busy for me. He gave me a bunch of projects but I've been roadblocked on all of them since I don't know the proper procedure to handle them. It's a really busy period for him but I've been just sitting here for 8 hours not knowing what to do. I know I shouldn't bug him this much but I have no idea on the deadline for these projects and they're all easy fixes so I just want it out of the fucking way already. I've gave him potential solutions but I've been left on read and when I do get a hold of him, he gives me like 15mins which isn't enough time or he'll give me a new task where I get roadblocked AGAIN.

Only count the money you have, not the money you will have.

What "we" pay for rent is irrelevant to you unless you have a location - geographically rent can vary dramatically if you're moving to the Bay Area, CA vs Bumfuck Nowhere, MA. You can check apartments.com to get a general idea about your location, but these listings are large complexes with "amenenties" as their justification for charging you more than you need to pay. Figure out the neighborhood you want to be, and go wardriving, literally. Find some landlord who has an extra house and plopped a sign in his front yard. Lots of places don't actually advertise on the internet, they go boomer-style and put a phone number on a sign. Those *can* be better, just depends on your landlord. Is he next door? Is he retired? Is he a greedy fuck and owns 12 other places? etc etc

Another good way is contact leasing offices and see if they have anyone trying to sublease their place, often times subleasors will sublease slightly below what the actual rent is because they *have* to move for work or something. Might only be 1-200 bucks, but hey. Craigslist can also be good for subleases, but I think everyone has pretty much migrated to FB Marketplace for renting/sublease/roommates.

Am I just unhireable? I didn't have any internships but I went to a top 10 university, took a broad range of applicable classes, held leadership in clubs, and I write unique cover letters, but I can't even get a damn interview. I've applied to faang, I've applied to game dev studios, I've applied to regular SE positions, hell I applied to defense companies and Raytheon flat out said "no." I seriously thought I'd have a chance to at least get an interview there since foreigners wouldn't apply, but apparently not
Is the industry so flooded that it's just impossible to find half decent work nowadays or is something wrong with me? Grads from my uni normally have a 6 figure starting salary but I've been looking around 65-70k and up and still nothing

I had no internships and a 3.0 GPA from a mid school. Graduated 2022 and it took until late october to get an offer. Of the ~300-400 applications I put out I got maybe 10 interviews max. Only got my job because they only had one dev at the time who is their "lead" and he has no degree so he didn't care about education just as long as I vaguely knew what he was talking about when discussing what he does. shoulda been a red flag getting an interview and offer within 2 weeks of applying in this job market but I needed to pay loans. You just gotta keep trying. Only takes getting lucky once.

While I interned, I didn't get the full time offer from that internship, and I honestly fluked into getting it in the first place. I'm not trying to sell myself short but I also just am a terrible/inexperienced programmer. I might've been able to lay low until I got the swing of things in FAGMAN if I'd gotten hired full time, but I'm not bringing anything at all to the table here. I'll pitch 80 though knowing my actual limit's 64 and hope his counteroffer is anything above that.

You are wasting $18000/yr and a singlewide trailer is $30k. If you did that or the shed you would stop wasting all your money away and be able to save for a downpayment. Go to the homesteading general on /out/ they do the furnishing shed thing all the time after buying 5-20 acres so they can save up to build a full sized house. Then you can keep the shed as a guest house or rent it out to hunters in the fall.

Worked hell desk 2 years ago for a large company (non-msp). It was comfy until my manager was yelling at me for mistakes he himself carelessly made. Took it like a champ but it was basically trickle down management. Told him to fuck off one day and got fired. Eventually that manager got fired for clocking in extra hours and not doing shit (basically had me deploy most laptops). Came back to same company after he left, low and behold a new manager whose even worse and left it due to a family emergency. Now the position is open again, should I go back? I managed to get a degree in compsci during vacant time but no interviews after 6 - 8 months of applying to dev jobs.

I don't mind talking to the generally, I just meant 80k itself seemed high locally for an entry level position. It's about 25 grand over the local median income for that area (household is 110k) but it's just around average, it seems. I was going to pitch 70 but as that other anon mentioned I'll shoot high and work down from there.

i worked for the associate dean and he said i was one of the best TAs he had and he'd be willing to write me a grad school rec letter if i applied. i have friends who work at boeing, milwaukee, a vr company, facebook, etc but they're all from my year and barely in entry positions. the rest of the professors i got close with were all heavily research oriented so i don't know if anybody would even be useful. my best bet would be the guy who works for a vr place since it's a smaller startup. i have a friend who did an EE internship and said the company was looking to hire on the down low
maybe i should start including course numbers for all my courses since the uni is supposed to be well known. idk
i'm working on setting up a portfolio page for projects i've done and am currently working on

yeah you studied ECE, i would assume you took circuits, some math, embedded systems, operating systems etc
also a tip: find a job/internship you want on CuckedIn and directly find the manager or a senior+ engineering team member and ping them directly with strong personalized interest
