Bros...

It's becoming obsolete...

It was my best friend for close to ten years, but in 2023 things are starting to run noticeably slower in this machine...

I don't want to abandon my old friend...
>>
>>93671298
just use windows xp
>>
>>93671320
I tend to run a Linux distro with XFCE or just a WM and it's still starting to show its age. It's mostly webshit that makes it suffer. For example, YouTube loads way slower than in my mother's "modern" cheapo laptop.
>>
>>93671298
Maybe it's the CMOS ?
>>
>>93671298
buy a(n intel) macbook
>>
Get a T480 and stop crying
>>
>>93671402
>not compatible with coreboot
It's ogre
>>
>>93671386
Yes, get an even worse piece of shit for no reason what so ever. Great fucking advice.
>>
>>93671414
the 2019 ones have solid enough build quality
>>
Ten years is a great return on investment for tech. Don't be afraid to upgrade, but be diligent in your next purchase. Modern Thinkpads are still great machines.

Don't be sad that it's over. Be happy it happened.

<:^)
>>
>>93671341
get a lightweight distro like antiX, i has a laptop from the early 00s and it ran fine with it.
as for web browser, you're fucked as long as they keep adding bullshit abstractions on top of HTML, and i don't have any on the top of my head that are usable and also support youtube
>>
>>93671341
>youtube
Just use yewtu instead
>>
framework or elitebook. and give up on coreboot, nothing supports it anymore.
>>
>>93671413
Get a chromebook if you want coreboot
>>
whats corebook
>>
>>93671456
I have a 2019 mac book pro. It's probably the single worst piece of tech I've ever owned. Slow overheating piece of shit that cooks it's own battery in half a year. It was shit at the time, it's a literal chunk of e-waste now.
Build quality is solid, though. I've dropped around 40kg worth of PA equipment on it once and it's got a minor ding on it.
>>
>>93671558
i have a 2015 one running arch. the screen and touchpad are amazing but that bitch has an amd 270x and an i7. it burns
>>
>>93671298
If you have at least sandy bridge CPU with 4 threads, you are fine to do the most basic tasks in 2023. One day you can try to convert this Thinkpad shell into a custom cyberdeck or maybe buy a redux board from chinese modders if they will create one some day.
>>
>>93671660
Dunno about that one, but with the 2019 one the main issue is cooling. I have a gaming laptop right now (actually from about the same time), and it doesn't heat up nearly as much. It has a proper radiator and a plastic chassis that doesn't transfer heat, so it's fine. I don't play games on it, so it's just ambient cold all the time basically.
The macbook has an aluminium chassis, no vent ports on the back and a very puny fan. Chassis acts like a radiator, so when you do anything on it besides just watching movies and browsing (actually, I think it heats up with movies too nowadays, despite being pristine on the inside) it heats up the massive battery.
Because of that, mine became basically a plugged in only device after roughly half a year. Plus the keyboard shit the bed around the same time. I think it also had a faulty SSD, but the warranty replaced it on a recall or some shit, I don't even remember at this point.
The specs on 2019 macs were also really shit. They only got usable somewhere near the top of the line, and mine is nowhere near that.
My current laptop is specked out nearly as much as the most expensive 15 inch macbook, but it has zero heating issues and costs around a quarter of that POS. Build quality is quite craptacullar, but hey, swings and roundabouts.
>>
>>93671298
i still use a x200 on a HDD and 4gigs of ram fine get a grip faggot
>>
>>93671298
Repaste the CPU, get an SSD if you haven't, and consider using a more minimalist browser, or at the very least disable WebGL; similarly, turning off Javashit would be a nuclear option that should extend the life of your laptop indefinitely.
>>
>>93671298
>things
What things, faggot? You trying to play video games on it? Maybe you should check your SSD health and CPU temps.
>>
>>93673046
Does anyone else find it incredibly annoying that Windows now needs at least like 12gb of ram and an SSD to run decently, like how inefficient and bloated can it get?
>>
>>93673011
>disable WebGL
Quick rundown?
>>
>>93671402
Id not want anything without touchpad buttons, the P series is the last "good" option albeit those dont have the back and forward keys either
>>
>>93673122
i run windows 10 (education edition) on a intel Celeron N4500 1.1GHz and 4GB of RAM and it happily boots in less than 15 seconds and plays 1080p yt videos on one screen and l4d2 on the other.
>>
>>93673153
shit and insecure, makes things run slow
>>
>>93671298
replace with linux, update cpu up to i7 gen 3840qm and battery slice
>>
>>93673176
just get the T480, im writing on it right now. Upgrade the display to IGZO low power display, do some undervolting and you will get up to 24hours battery life.
>>
>>93671298
install Haiku (not a linux, but has WINE support) or bodhi linux
for browsing, use ultralight
>>
>>93674558
>Haiku
>has WINE support
Does that mean the only way to have a functional Haiku system is to use non-native programs? That's almost an improvement since I've last checked it out.
>>
>>93674589
> Does that mean the only way to have a functional Haiku system is to use non-native programs?
yes
>>
>>93674609
Still better than Redox OS.
>>
>>93671341
that's because pre-Skylake Intel and pre-Zen AMD GPUs do not have VP9 hardware decoders which are required to play YouTube media efficiently. Since they can't use hardware decoders they use the CPU. If your machine is a desktop with a capable CPU you won't notice the performance impact but a laptop CPU from 2015 or earlier is absolutely going to struggle, especially sub-Core i3 tier shit.
The options are either upgrade hardware or switch to h264 with an extension
>>
>>93671298
I have a t410 i5 still runs great

Found your problem. Xfeces is a RAM hog now. Use a lighter DE such as MATE. Works well on my old Atom netbook.
/g/ should realize it's 2023 and things aren't the same on the Linux desktop anymore.
>>
>>93671298
My T520 just werks
>>
>>93674970
looks comfy af
>>93674677
Haiku is actually pretty usable
>>
i still use ivybridge based desktop and sandybridge t420, those just work.
tho i use coffeelake laptop for schoolwork because i have less choice about services i use there.
>>
>>93671298
Get a t430 its better in every way plus you can drop in the classic keyboard
>>
>>93671298
>>93671341
Use the extension h264ify to reduce cpu usage on youtube.
Also do this:
https://jcvassort.open-web.fr/how-to-disable-cpu-mitigations/
>>
>>93671298
What? I am still using my X230 as a daily driver. No issues at all, very snappy. Post discarded, Jannies, clean it up.
>>
>>93671298
My T420 is still my daily driver, but it took a lot of work to keep it performant.

Things that helped:
Oleh's custom BIOS
16GB 1866MHz DDR3 (only possible with BIOS)
i7-2960XM (I use liquid metal)
Three SSD's (one on-board, one in HDD bay, one in expansion bay)
All SSD's in ZFS mirror with compression enabled.
ZRAM allocated on 100% of RAM

Second this. I have a T40 built in 2001 with a Pentium(M) and 512 mb ram and it's usable as a web browser and word processor with antiX
>>

Which model did you get?
>>
>>93671298
Have you performed all the upgrades?

> Either external gpu using expresscard slot (https://www.ebay.com/itm/194213914579) or NVME adapter (https://thinkmods.store/collections/all-mods-1/products/expresscard-to-nvme-adapter?variant=41158283493569)

> liquid metal cooled
> 1080p screen
> 16 GB Ram
> SSD in dvd rom slot
> Gentoo

If not, then it's you who is becoming obsolete.

My 10 year old optiplex is still running strong, stop buying disposable trash.
All my old thinkpads are in a purgatory box with dead batteries, dead fans, dead GPUs or dead CCFL inverters.
Laptops trade longetivity and performance for mobility and most people on /g/ don't need mobility.

My only laptop now is a trashy passively cooled sub-$100 chromebook that was trash when it was new but the 10h battery life makes it worth it, I even corebooted it. Even with the battery degraded to 87% it still lasts like 7-8 hours today.
>>
I got t420 now with 8gb ram, ssd +hdd, i5 cpu. Running windows 10 and 11 dual boot. Both work great. Just played TMNT shredders revenge few mins ago.
>>
>>93671298
buy a chinkbook, they are cheap, will break easily and have driver problems, and run like shit, the only problem though is that they work to the point that most of the times they are able to turn on.

I use a T410 running Debian with KDE, and it runs just fine with 8 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD.
Not only that, but I dual boot Windows XP for nostalgia faggotry.
The only issue I had was that I had to fuck with the BIOS because I needed to replace the stock WLAN card with an unsupported one.
>>
>>93680691
Sandy Bridge is never obsolete.
>>
Thinkpad is shit at least since Lenovo took over.
It's just bottom of the barrel components with poor engineering and build quality.
I had one for a while and didn't realize how bad it was until I used a Macbook.
I actually took the thinkpad to a garbage dump just to avoid someone else ending up with it, even though it "worked" fine.
