I used to be a fan of free software and Linux, but I stopped using computers for a while (8~9 months). When I recovered I really lost hope in free software, and I am using Windows now for everything.I was wondering why did I even use free software. Was it because I was bored and I wanted a new challenge or what? What is the point of caring about privacy in a world filled with capitalism, wars and extremely disgusting shit? This question is directed to all people who use free software.
>>93671051you are just a doomer retard who gave up on the world
>>93671096I asked for the answer of my question, not your opinion on me.
>>93671051It does what I want it to and runs nice on my computer. Software is a tool first and foremost.
>>93671096fpbp
>>93671135you are asking the wrong question
The tech is more advancedThe code being open and free is a nice bonus
>>93671051idealism/wishful thinking - hippie world dreamautism/challenge - make life hard to appear busysecurity - same reason as 'open source'being poor - same reason as 'open source'owning your computer - being control maniac, best reason to have free software, to be honest but the downside is that you waste too much time on shit
Honestly, Windows just doesn't work as well for me. Linux has a very well developed command line that I haven't had any problems with, and Windows is mostly GUIs that take way longer to fiddle around with than Linux CLIs.For example, changing DNS is one command in CLI, while on Windows you have to open an app, wait for it to load, go through a few menus, and only then will it give you the option.Of course, this is all just my opinion.
>>93671051It just works for old hardware. New hardware is designed for closed source so it will be suboptimal with open source. As the hardware ages and the demand for it decreases so does the support and performance. Meanwhile the open source software will catch up with the performance of the closed source software and surpass it due to the decrease in support. Ideally you would use closed source software until the point of equilibrium at which point you transition to open source software. That is not ideal because it's hard to decipher and transition so by design the hardware is abandoned. With open source you might want to abandon it before the point of equilibrium but once you reach it it becomes the best alternative until the hardware dies. I made a graph to illustrate my point:tldr: It's perfectly acceptable to use the best performing software for the hardware. You either want your hardware to work right now or for the long term, you always have the choice.
>>93671910thisI wanted to set up wake on lan on my PC, yet defender kept blocking the ports for itwhen I wanted to transfer my files over bluetooth, windows just kept blocking my deviceI switched to Devuan and never looked back again
>>93671051Because Bill Gates is a fucking pedo.
>I used to be a fan of free software and Linux, but I stopped using computers for a while (8~9 months). When I recovered I really lost hope in free software, and I am using Windows now for everything.Freetard rehab is real?
>>93671724>being control maniacTransluscent
>>93671051Because a lot of proprietary software, especially if it's made by american big tech companies, is literal and unironic spyware. If you don't see the problem with that, then I don't know what to tell you.
>>93671051Why would you give up privacy and freedom just because there are bad things in the world? >what's the point of eating healthy when fast food is a billion dollar industry?
>>93671724foss/free software is not a movement and it will never be.Stop larping as armchair revolutionaries
>I was wondering why did I even use free software. Was it because I was bored and I wanted a new challenge or what? What is the point of caring about privacy in a world filled with capitalism, wars and extremely disgusting shit? It's because you fell for memes without thinking "what does this actually do for me?" You got sold the idea that using Firefox instead of Chrome is some kind of grand sociopolitical statement that somehow helps defeat le evil corporations. You got sold the idea of "privacy" and you think that installing some browser extension, or just using open source software means "privacy". You realised your belief system is built upon false premises and the whole thing simply collapsed. Your recovery shows that you're still able to think for yourself, which, sadly, can't be said for many other cases.
Freedom.
>>93673242Recovery means that I recovered from depression (which is the reason why I stopped computing).
>>93673372That part was intentionally tongue in cheek. My point still stands, however.
>>93671051>but I stopped using computers for a while (8~9 months).Unironically do your math homework kid. Knowing math will help you a lot in the future. Also math is basically puzzle games, except puzzles are actually hard(or like videogames in general, if you are competitive every game turns into a puzzle game). Also dont skip your PE. You might feel ok now while you are a teenager but that wont last. And dont eat junk food.
>world filled with capitalism, wars and extremely disgusting shitThis is why you should care about privacy
>>93672783I'm having a bowel movement right now. Check mate.Yes, I'm phonefagging.
>>93671051>I was wondering why did I even use free software. How am I suppose to answer a question that only you can you fucking retard.Stop posting and sit in a room and stare at a wall for a while.
>>93671051Anarcho capitalists also support free software. For instance, this guy is a somewhat well known Hoppean and says republicucks should adopt abolishing IP.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nQriE1LrzUYou don't have to be some edgy doomer to use free software.
>>93675442>You don't have to be some edgy doomer to use free software. You don't have to be fucking anything to use it. If some software is useful to you, use it. There's no need to make it a political statement.
>>93671051Because we love freedom.
>>93675687This. Just use the best tool for the job
>can fork and modify>not being spied on>less resource intensive>i like it>it's neat>it just werks>makes old af hardware more useable than back in the day>more control over permissions and featuresI used Windows until I was 25. Started with W98 and last one was W7. In the rare case I need to use something on Windows, I run a VM, and if it doesn't work, I got an old laptop running W7.Phone is debloated Android and only got about 5 closed-source apps, and the only trackers they contain are crashlitics that only send stuff if you choose to do so.
>>93674330Note to myself: don't talk about depression on 4chan
>>93671910No one needs a streamlined command to change DNS on their home computer. Distro hopping faggots always forget that the busywork they keep entangling themselves with is something that normal people only have to deal with once a decade, if ever. By the time you need to use some esoteric linux command, unless it's part of your job, you're probably not going to remember it and will have to look it up anyways. At that point it doesn't matter whether it's Unix commands, some hidden Windows gui, a batch script or powershell dark magic.
>>93679258commands are much easier to follow compared instructions for navigating a convoluted GUI
>>93671051>What is the point of caring about privacy in a world filled with capitalism, wars and extremely disgusting shit? How are these things connected? Can you explain this to someone who does not suffer from your extremely gay depression?
