Grognards hate people being able to actually use their computer to get work done

They think the whole point of a computer is to play with the computer itself. All you do when you install linux is spend several months figuring out how to do the simplest imaginable tasks, then rice the desktop environment and browse the internet because there's nothing else that just works and isn't a colossal pain in the ass to deal with.

Eventually you give up and reinstall windows or osx just so you can use programs that just work withotu 10 hours of fucking around

KDE doesn't have this problem. Look into the name of GTK to figure out why it still does.

GTK = Gimp Tool Kit = GNU Image Manipulation Program Tool Kit
How about the worst, most anti-user, anti-sanity DE on linux, period? GNU Object Model Environment.

GNU. It's right there. Garbage Not Usable. Every single piece of software to carry the GNU name, to date, has been an awful piece of shit. The best GNU can do to get adoption is apply microsoft style compatibility lock-in tactics to get it to spread and use psyops to get a vocal minority of communists (who often maintain major distros) to react aggressiely to superior alternatives.

Cut out GNU/, and you save the Linux operating system. No more psychotic animal-molesting pedophiles. No more trash bloated buggy software that is designed to please one OCD tranny while pissing off normal people.

As long as the Linux operating system includes or relies upon even one single Garbage Not Usable component it will never make it as a mainstream OS.

A real answer: Many foss software are created and used by more technologically savy people, whom are accustomed to having less UI/UX. While proprietary software and corporate projects are "mostly" incentivized to make their software as accessible as humanly possible (otherwise they go bankrupt), foss projects don't have this same pressure to have a seamless UI/UX.

I don't get UI/UX. It is a corporate thing created for iBabies. I don't give a fuck about how my system looks. I only care about its functionality. Also, the terminal isn't scary, as Steve Jews thought.

How much arguing and fighting to get the change made?

It took them over 20 years to do this in gnome.
For 20 years there was a gnome dev just sitting there doing nothing else but preventing people from adding common sense features to the desktop environment. You could not even pay a literal microsoft shill enough money to do sandbag and sabotage like that.

Gnome file picker still doesn't work correctly. It has to generate thumbnails through viewing the image files in your normal file manager. So if you save a new image but haven't opened its containing folder in your file manager, when you open the file picker that image will just have a generic thumbnail. Still a piece of shit.
