> Pixels are the only decent new phones
Google discovered dozens of Android devices can be compromised without any user interaction necessary due a multiple zero-day vulnerabilities in Samsung's Exynos modems. The affected devices include smartphones, wearables, and even vehicles.

As TechCrunch reports, a total of 18 zero-day vulnerabilities have been discovered by Google's Project Zero team of security analysts. Four of those are severe enough to allow for Internet-to-basedband remote code execution, which means an attacker only needs a victim's phone number to compromise their handset—no user interaction is necessary.

Tim Willis, head of Project Zero, explains in a blog post that, "With limited additional research and development, we believe that skilled attackers would be able to quickly create an operational exploit to compromise affected devices silently and remotely."

As the vulnerabilities are found in Exynos modems, dozens of devices are affected. Google provided the following list of products that can be compromised:

Google's own Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro
Any wearables using the Exynos W920 chipset
Any vehicles using the Exynos Auto T5123 chipset

Our execs are lazy and refuse to get with the times on OS support. Our biggest release of the year coming this June is so far only confirmed for 3 years of support. They looked at the new 4/5 year commitments samsung and others are making and said "that's cool lol, anyways"

I use my phone for maps, messaging, and YouTube. Is there some amazing functions I’m missing that people are using their high-spec phones for, or is anything more than $400 just a luxury item?
>>
>>92187847
Each year of OS upgrade support costs us money to Google that if I recall correctly the higher ups are resistant to paying. I am not from the engineering team so I don't know how difficult it is on their end. Support may get better in the future because our portfolio size is supposed to shrink in the coming years.
>>
>>92187960
nope. Specsfags will obsess over Genshin Impact having 2 extra frames but it makes zero difference. a decent screen is worth a couple extra bucks though
>>
>>92187960

Yes you get more compact phones for higher price. You also get better camera and screen. You also get much better speakers(usually) and a processor that will stay snappy for 5 years. You also get better internet speeds and faster storage.
>>

>>92187985
fair enough. i know its not easy to just implement it but tonnes of Motos phones from 2020 and 2021 are still stuck on their shipped OS's. Motorola probably loses the money they save from not upgrading OS's due to customers not buying because of the lack of future proofing.

It is one of the most common criticisms we receive. There are people pushing to fix this internally but it is a battle. Same story with the continued camera mediocrity.

So I'm getting a new phone.
Pixel 7 is looking good - and it's the same price on a plan as the 6a
...
but... I can't see why upgrading it is worthwhile.
There's been 4 flagships since my last phone, but I can't actually see any meaningful upgrades.

What am I in for with a new device, apart from losing my 3.5mm jack?
>>
>>92188012
The camera, my guy

Smartphones killed cheap point and shoots a long time ago and now modern flagships are better than 1 inch sensor high end point and shoots

People understand that its better to spend a bit more and get a smartphone that can be a great camera rather than to buy an expensive separate camera

It's why you seen these clueless posts in these generals of "lol who cares just get a real camera" not understanding the landscape and the market right now

Is there a device that can push phone calls/text messages from my phone to a small device that just sets off an alarm/readout of the text?

I don't want to have to take my phone with me to my room at night, so a small device that just forwards calls/texts to it would be great.

Bonus points if there's some alarm clock that does this.

I just found out how to get free phone service through boost mobile.
1. Get their 100/yr 1GB plan
2. Download the Boost One app
3. Open the app every single day, spin the wheel, and watch 1 ad. Do not miss a day. You'll gain approximately 33.42 cents off of your bill per day (avg over 1 week), which is $122 per year, more than enough to cover the entire bill. It should take no more than 3 minutes to complete this, you can do it while you're on the shitter.

1-2 year old flagship is the smartest choice - still top hardware with all the major bugs known and official/unofficial support quality documented. This is why upper midrange phones are a hard sell these days. For budget-midrange you'd have to go with an older flagship and then the midranger is better.

Your options are paying for Patreon for self updating and no maintenance via TestFlight. Or, messing around with AltStore and renewing while connected to a computer every 7 days (or less).

Personally I love iChan so I pay for pro even though I'm on Android now. You get cloud notifications for one example.

The other main one I've heard about is Chance Imageboard Browser, it may have a TestFlight that you don't have to pay for. But as we've seen with every free client, there's no incentive for the dev to keep working on it. Eventually they get bored and abandon it like Clover or its many forks.

I found some workarounds for this. If your device supports it, you can download Expert Raw from the Galaxy Store. This will take still photos without requiring "Nearby devices" permission. However it doesn't seem to be able to do selfies because there seems to be no way to switch cameras, and it can't do movies or many of the extra tricks that the full camera app can do.

Another option is to run the camera app with Bluetooth disabled. Then it can have its "Nearby devices" permission, but it can't use it. The problem with this is that if you use Bluetooth at other times you have to remember to disable it and enable it.

So I wrote a tiny app which disables Bluetooth, runs the camera app, and restores the previous enabled or disabled state of Bluetooth when the camera app exits. I put this on my home screen instead of the camera app: it has the same icon. You have to remember to exit properly from the camera app using the Back button: the Home or Recents buttons leave my app and the camera app sitting on the task's back stack, so my app doesn't get to run and restore the Bluetooth state.

It is. The fact that 8g1 doesn't have av1 decoding alone should be enough for you to avoid that SoC in this day and age.
>>
>>92197315
well battery life wise, batteries decay within 2 years usually so you should replace them around that time in ANY phone. there has been zero progress in battery technology not counting charger cable improvements for bottlenecked charging.

~ you can keep your iphone for 5 years easy, the iphone 8 plus released 2017 is still getting updates today. Whole major update redesigns too.

Would it be incorrect to think that higher base battery life = longer longevity because it started from a higher point?
I have a Xiaomi Mi 6 right now and it was only in the last year that I started to notice a full charge going under 1 work day + commute of usage, how do iPhones compare to that after the 5+ year mark?

If you want Xiaomi-tier battery health, your only option is another Xiaomi. Base battery capacity only plays a role to an extent, if the phone is well-optimized it will use the battery more efficiently, reducing your frequency of charging it and in turn the number of charge cycles which is primarily kills the battery.

If you take care of your battery it can last you well over 10 years. Samsung lets you limit charging to 85% for this reason.
Personally I had my phone for over a year and only have ~33 cycles on the battery

Are they really that good? I haven't heard good things about the company recently and I would've assumed other companies would've caught up to them in battery life by now.
>>
>>92197720
They've been putting fast-charging batteries in everything from budget to top models for years now so you'd be hearing about any issues by now. Others are largely playing catch-up by sticking to slow charging speeds and software-limiting to preserve battery. Oppo/Vivo also boast some strong battery specs, but I'm not familiar with their phones.

Most people in general are clueless about how computational photography and AI enhancements work.

These people are so stupid that to them, finding out that the software alters the picture was like a revelation for them. It's like, yeah, no shit of course it does, every single phone does this

The worst is when these stupid people throw around accusations and regurgitate bullshit without actually knowing what they are talking about

This "Fake moon scandal" just reminded us how clueless and stupid the "Average consumer" is
>>
>>92198594
okay but why
>>
>>92198706
Dude chill it's not something as sophisticated as computational photography. It's literally slapping an image of a moon onto a moon-looking object. People were right to call Samsung out for this - it's bad practice not to disclose how your software actually works while bragging that it does something which it evidently is not capable of. It's similar to when Huawei was caught for using DSLR images for their promo shots, except this time it's baked into the device's "AI".

Is using a DNS other than my ISP's (using NextDNS) practically the same as using those VPN solutions?
Somehow it feels more invasive using a 3rd party DNS than routing my network traffic through Blokada for example.

Confusing really.
>>
>>92210150
Blokada and such filter the traffic locally, on your phone. They create a pseudo-vpn so that traffic passes through it and it can accept/block domains on the fly, but essentially it all happens on your phone. The DNS solutions, well, do you trust your glowie ISP DNS more than NextDNS? That's up to you. I personally don't and choose to use it.

Anyone got some more solid info about Poco F5 and Poco F5 Pro coming this year? Are those two getting released together, or is it X3 and X3 Pro situation again when they have like a half a year (or was it more?) gap between them? From what I saw in terms of CPU used F5 (Snap 7 gen1) is worse than 1+ (Mediatek 9000), Pro is around comparable (Snap 8 gen1), but then there is possibility F5 will get a 7 gen2 instead? Maybe not too related but I don't want to make a thread for it and it's Android anyways
Can someone recommend me a good nice OLED tablet for watching media in bed on that's not an iPad or Samsung tablet?
Right now I'm considering the Tab S8+ even though it's expensive as fuck and probably way more than I need so I'm looking for some alternatives.
Screen quality is the most important thing by far, as long as it's powerful enough to do basic web browsing and streams I'm fine.
>>
>>92212406
>no one develops apps for it
You know android apps will just work on it right? Its not 2013 where apps on tablets would be stretched out and fucked. I have a shitty lenovo tablet and a base ipad and the former is much more useful in browsing and media consumption. iPads are giants memes unless all you do is stream netflix/hbo etc on it, and you're forced to use brave if you want adblock, and still isnt half as good as ublock

Just got a Samsung s10e for a 105€ at an ebay auction, did i get a good deal? will i be able to rrot it and install a good version of android on it?
Will i be able to play current gacha or even COD smoothly?

Anyone here have a Unihertz phone? I've been wanting a phone with a physical keyboard for a while now but I'm still using my Moto G Power that I bought 3 years ago and usually don't replace my phones until they no longer work. But I hate typing with the on-screen keyboard. I'm wondering if I should gett a pocket as a trial run and see if it's for me. But the titan slim or regular titan would be a phone I would want permanently.

If you somehow managed to grab a non-EU model, which I doubt, you'd be in luck. SD 855 chipset is decently capable in current year even for games. The Exynos they put in EU models was prone to running hot even in normal use.

I can't find a suitable upgrade.

My XZ1 Compact works great. Battery health is 95% even after all these years which is surprising, and the form factor or rather the width of the phone fits my hand perfectly.

I tried the newer Xperia 5 models but I didn't like how fucking long it was.

I even got an iPhone 13 Mini, which has the same dimensions as the XZ1 Compact, but I just fucking couldn't get myself to like iOS.

Everyone I know that has/had one of the S10 series experienced random overheating. That being said it's still an epic model, the last good small Samsung. I'd try replacing the battery with a new one if you find it inadequate.
>>
I've done some cursory searches but I wasn't able to find a conclusive answer. Does Android 12 (or up) support using F2FS on an external SD card? Note that I said EXTERNAL, search engines seem to have a hard time grasping that part. Ideally the dumb method of mounting it as a seperate storage, not like I'd have a choice for filesystems when it comes to adoptable storage.

We've had this conversation 3 times already. They only give information you provide on non ADP enabled devices like bank information (which they keep for monitoring fraud, retard) and name (monitoring fraud)

Actual contents that matter like note contents, file contents, photos, these are locked in the phone because Apple won't unlock them.

Goal post shift incoming about how they can still get hacked in. News flash. All phones are unsecure and Androids moreso due to having shit update support.

For example, something like this is a little bit too minimalistic and clean. The color stands out against the black esges. The poco text is not cool and should be replaced with something else. Along the edges of the body you could add some more accents. Idk. Maybe like those yellow mustangs with some black stripes?

iPhone X series on swappa theyre pretty reliable.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eOgibNVjhc

A14 and other budget chink phones are literally atrocious hardware. The meta is to always buy an older flagship instead of a current year budget phone that skimps out on costs by using shitty components and materials.
