i've set up both jellyfin and plex and mostly use them with an apple tv 4k.
i usually use swiftfin, unless the files are something that isn't recognized by either like japanese titles or hdr files, then i use plex which has an other videos category that can be handy.
jellyfin is set up to use the hardware encoders on my dual core jasper lake, so if i'm away and want to watch something my choice is jellyfin.

downloads are qbittorrent on the server and electorrent on my pc.

I couldn’t get vpn split tunneling / localhost accessibility working with Jellyfin, but it works with Plex for whatever reason so I’m a Plex pleb now

I don’t do any on the fly transcoding, only direct play. If there are compatibility issues with devices I transcode ahead of time and just direct stream that.

I don’t have a dedicated server just yet so I have it running on a windows host. Would it be better to run TrueNAS(or equivalent) in a VM and pass the drives through?

I have an encrypted Wasabi bucket which charges no egress fees. I then have a compute instance with Vultr that mounts the bucket using Rclone that Plex accesses.

Costs me less than $40/m all up so far. Close friends and family access it, though I don't allow transcoding, which isn't actually needed because I only add compatible formats and everyone's internet is fast enough.

Thought about setting up a plex box. Currently just leave shit on my seedbox for the season until I archive it on my offline NAS.
My HTPC is just a W10 M900 Tiny plugged into the TV with a chinesium wireless remote that has a keyboard on one side and does the wiimote thing to control the mouse. Really easy to dump shit on. KDE connect makes it easy to control from any machine if I don't feel like using the cheap remote.

I have a Windows box with 6 drives on it. I have Plex running on it alongside PIA, qBittorrent, Radar, Sonnar, and Prowlarr.

Radarr and Sonarr are configured behind a DDNS configuration that have passworded protection to let me access them from NzbDrone from my phone to pick up new shows on the go. Just add the show and the rest of it handles the logistics.

Plex has a webhook integration with radarr/sonarr which auto refreshes when new things are added.

I access Plex from my phone (and Chromecast), computer (Windows client), and TV (LG WebOS built in).

It's comfy as fuck. Had the setup for around 5-6 years at this point.

I'm running plex on a 2012 i5 macbook pro over 802.11g wifi to an older roku box. This handles most files fine, but some higher bitrate 1080p files fail after attempting to play for a few seconds. What is the issue here, network speed? Or computer power? I don't have ethernet cables long enough to connect both devices to the router so I haven't tested that yet

I seed long term and don't want storage usage doubled from Radarr/Sonarr copying torrents, but I'm currently using Stablebit DrivePool which doesn't support hardlinking. I use Jellyfin with the *arrs (and other things) managed through docker compose, all behind a Traefik reverse proxy docker container. I can access my stuff from anywhere that has internet access, it's pretty nice. I have a lifetime Plex pass but I prefer Jellyfin, Plex has been going in a weird direction.

Free Plex, with over 1tb of movies and TV shows I got about 10 years ago.
And they are all in 720p or 1080p so I dont even watch them nowadays because it looks like shit.
Im thinking about nuking it and starting over, or stopping altogether.
No friends or family ever gave a shit about it despite me begging them to use it.

Kind of sad really, they would ask me to put things on it in the beginning to appease me, but would never actually watch anything.
