I am utterly through with technology harassing me. GrapheneOS on my phone, Arch on my desktop, Fedora on my laptop, and the biggest benefit I have noticed is that there's nothing to ping me or notify me or popup or vibrate. My technology responds to me when I wish - it does not contact me for any reason.

The first thing I hear, and my own personal reaction when I switched from pozzed technology, is how annoying it will be to switch. You have to find new programs, learn new systems, and with all this FOSS bullshit, you're going to be troubleshooting constantly! The thing is, your skills will eventually get to a point where you are in a stable state 99% of the time. You were annoyed for a bit, but then it went away. As opposed to "just werks" tech which annoys you constantly as a matter of principle. It's the fundamental design of modern technology.

I use windows 11 because it has some decent features like DPI scaling across monitors, and it can even work with the classic UI from windows 7.

https://winclassic.boards.net/thread/990/windows-classic-theme-on-1903

if you want the ACTUAL EXACT classic theme that win 7 has. There is a way to load it on windows 8.1.
I don't have the guide for it on 8.1 anymore but im 99% sure its on the forum I linked earlier.

But I'm going to start using Arch Linux mostly

you can, theres easy ones on this forum for win10 in the same section here:
>>91128101
https://winclassic.boards.net/thread/456/simple-classic-theme-supports-windows
both those links are the easiest way to get it in win10.

For win8 if you use the classic theme by disabling DWM, the only tweak you really need to do is this mod to fix the control panel

arch-linux is the best desktop linux, and it's rolling release meaning the only version is always 100% up to date.

you don't even have to update it that much. But its better to update it once in awhile, because it keeps the update process less complicated.
(the command is just "Pacman -Syu" iirc)

Like if you go without an update for 5 years you'd have to follow some guides in the patchnotes to actually get it fully updated. At that point you should just reinstall it.

I have a computer that's been running the same version of Slackware since the early 10's. (13.37)
Aside from the kernel, it's still perfectly up to date. Packages don't just 'stop' being made for it. You have to do some maintenance of your own, but it's perfectly viable.

you install the normal ltsc and run the activator which converts it to the iot version and activates it by hardware ID. Does not work with the evaluation ltsc version you can easily get from microsoft, has to be a normal ltsc either torrent it, devnet it, or get it from the link in sysconf16's guide

depends on the distros approach
ie fedora releases one version every 6 months and supports every version for 1 year
something like debian has one release per (about) 2 years
though upgrading is not a big deal

in case youre curious, on windows ltsc you only get feature and security updates
as well as you get the choice to only do them whenever you want

LTSC hasn't been a problem for me with my Quest 2. The two problems I have encountered that you might have a problem with is a Windows browser that is built in but not IE or Edge. Assetto Corsa has a mod called content manager that uses that web browser. It does not come installed with LTSC and you have to grab it off of M$. The other is no snip tool for screenshots out of the box. Visual runtimes aren't installed either, but I think you have to install them on regular Windows too.

>Will I have to constantly worry about updating and upgrading my OS if I just switch to Linux? Every once in a while for security reasons is fine but Windows and their constant remodels and stuff is getting a bit obnoxious.
Distros like debian and Ubuntu (and derivatives) have periodic release versions.
The most popular distro in steam is Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, lts releases are biannually, last one was 20.4. So every two years in april. There are subversions like 22.04.1 though.
Updating within a release is just done with the apt upgrade command, upgrading to the next lts version do-release-upgrade. There are also some GUI programs that in popular DEs that do essentially the same.
This entire system is quite stable and reliable, updates are very rarely a problem.
Then there's completely opposing release variant arch uses, rolling releases. No version tags, just current updates. This means you get new shit faster, but it's notoriously unstable to update. I don't quite see the appeal in this, if you don't update for a few months you're pretty much guaranteed to run into problems once you decide to update your system.
>>
>>91124362
Add to this the hardware requirements for Windows 11 and suddenly a huge portion of the second hand market is forced to use Linux due to the lack of alternatives.
>>
>>91133224
Depends on the distribution and version of that distribution. Some are rolling release or close to it and update often, some are more stable. Debian is one of the most long lasting ones, but this also means it is not ideal for the latest hardware.

The environment is also important, for instance is as close to rolling release as it gets without being rolling release so it updates very often. Even so its official LXDE spin is still the same old one as far as a desktop environment is regarded.

If you want consistency then avoid Gnome like the plague. By the way, consistency is not the only reason to avoid Gnome like the plague.

>Will I have to constantly worry about updating and upgrading my OS if I just switch to Linux? Every once in a while for security reasons is fine but Windows and their constant remodels and stuff is getting a bit obnoxious.

Debian stable, for example, will not give you this problem. It is very secure. It receives updates for security. You won't have to constantly update and even when you do, its usually just a button press.

There are autists on this board suggesting things like ArchLinux and Gentoo. If you are not familiar with Linux, you want to stay away from these distros.

Ubuntu and its variants just work.
Linux Mint just works.
Debian stable is very secure and everything works.

Linux is more modern now. Its not like it was in 2006. You have modern looking "app stores" that have nice interfaces for you to install and uninstall software. You also have modern installers that let you customize your setup without getting into the deep technical details.

I'm a software developer. I use Debian stable as my daily driver. I use it to check emails, browse the web, and occasionally play a game of Wesnoth.

With KVM (Kernel Virtual Machine), I can test run any Linux operating system. With virt-manager it becomes easy to tweak and manage my virtual machines. I have Linux Mint in a VM. I do all my programming on Linux Mint. I just have a shared folder between the host and guest operating systems.

This setup is not hard at all. I can play with any operating system I want and not have to fuck up my host system.

Once you get better with Linux, you may feel as though you're "not in the driver's seat" with distros like Ubuntu and Linux Mint.

In that regard, ArchLinux is very nice. It has lots of documentation and the system is very neatly organized.

tl;dr install Debian stable on your main machine. Install virt-manager and KVM. Now play with all of the Linux distros as often as you want.
>>
>>91128202
>Will I have to constantly worry about updating and upgrading my OS if I just switch to Linux?
Not constantly but yes. If you customize it too much shit will break when you update. Occasionally they will come up with things like gnome 3, wayland, systemd, flatpak and so on and everything will change, some will break. I've had problems where suddenly the next ubuntu version doesn't support my AMD graphics card driver anymore, but that was like 10 years ago now and I haven't used AMD since. No OS is perfect.

You can get newer hardware to run on Debian if you don't fear taking a few packages out of backports or the non-stable versions. I personally use kernel 6.0 from back-ports and graphics firmware from Bookworm.
I haven't had any problems with either and I assume the only reason they aren't in stable is bc devs have enough to autisticly test them with everything else in debian stable.
