How is the battery life one those? Considering buying 480s or 495 but can't find anything about 495 that is not on-release reviews.
Also may you please say how good/bad is it in 2022+1?
>>
Does anyone run linux on a thinkpad with a dedicated gpu? I got this t480s with nvidia mx150 and I'm wondering if linux has any good support for running that. I will almost never use it but I want it to at least work.
>>
How much would you pay for a t440p in good condition ?
I was looking for one or maybe two but man these prices online are insane. Most are asking at least 180€ for the base model. (i5, TN display, 4/8GB RAM, HDD)

According to ThinkWiki:
T - Portable high-end laptops for business trips and programming, supersedes the entire 6xx series.
L - Portable mid-end laptops for business trips and programming, supersedes the SLx10 series.

According to the Lenovo website:
T - Professional, productivity-rich, work-horse laptops
L - Entry-level business laptops

Simply put, T is better than L.

Will this edp cable break if I bend it 180 degrees? And if that doesn't work, can I use a cable from a different laptop as long as they're both 40pin edp? Or maybe a flexible extension cable if that exists

Trying to upgrade my dell precision m6700 with a 4k screen, the screen works and it fits for the most part but the new screen has connector on the bottom with basically no space for the cable to go. The cable in question is rigid as fuck and makes the screen sit so high it's impossible to close the lid unless I bend the cable somehow

I tried machine translating the chink forum page for this mod but I don't think it mentions the cable anywhere

I took apart my thinkpad (because I'm a compulsive teardown guy) and I put it back together, but now it only boots with the charger, and gives a cmos error. I recently ordered a palmrest for my P52 and after disassembly I realized that the trackpad board is glued to the palm rest. Is this a thig? Am I retarded? there are no clips or similar things. the only thing you can change in software are charge thresholds. the connectors could be corroded, since you said that it doesn't always show up properly. i once had an android phone that wouldn't charge the battery sometimes and the only thing that worked was taking it out and shorting it with a paperclip to get it to charge again. try not to kill yourself if you try that

Anyone have a recommedation for a replacement battery for an x240? Seems like the prices on ebay vary quite a bit, not sure what I'm to be looking for.
>>
>>91095309
Something half the price of any of the branded ones is probably cheaper for a reason. I doubt you could go too wrong with any of the most common brand names. I keep recommending green cell since it seems to be the most available and reputable brand in europe and I've had success with their batteries. Duracell also sells batteries for thinkpads if you want to be extra safe about the brand but I have no idea about their quality.
Genuine OEM batteries are probably also still decent for x240.

T14:
>Better cooling

>Single socketed RAM slot
>Slightly cheaper

T14s:
>Longer battery
>Low-power 400-nit screen
>USB 4 (possible Linux issues?)
>Less ventilation

Leaning towards T14s, but I have concerns regarding Linux issues. Thank you

That's odd. I've only ever noticed weird issues when throttling the cpu on purpose, otherwise it's about the same performance as a 8th gen lv like a t480. Maybe a bit more in a cold room.
Was yours like an i3 or something? It should have been similar to a skylake performance if it's an i7
>>
Anyone have strong opinions on the P1? Was looking at maybe grabbing one if they did a raptor lake refresh.

it was an i5. looking back, the issue was more due to the low amount of ram, but that's not really the point. i'm still seething about how bloated windows 10 is and how much performance it ate up compared to windows 7

As a fellow X220 appreciator, I'd recommend the X270.
>light
Same series as X220, so you know the deal. The case and keyboard are redesigned, but the overall form factor is comparable.
>good battery life
Everything starting with X240 switched from M-series to U-series CPUs, dropping the average TDP from ~35W to ~15W. Effectively, newer laptops draw about half the power. Combine this with the battery bridge system (which the X270 was the last to have) and a 9-cell external battery and you're looking at 10-12 hours of use on a single charge.
>can run a VM
No experience here, but if my old X220 could do it I see no reason this shouldn't be able to. However, if you will be using VMs frequently, it may be worth getting an X280 instead. You lose out on a bit of battery and some ports, BUT the X280 has quad-core CPU configurations available that should be a huge boon for virtualization. I believe the X280 has a new smaller/lighter case as well.

X270s are also good because you can find them at a good price. I suppose most people either want the "old school" X220/X230 or the "new and shiny" X280; I picked up mine with 1080p IPS display, 256gb NVMe SSD, and 9-cell battery for $190. Can't go wrong with a price like that.

How to take care the dual battery for T480? They said that the battery usage is not the same like T460.

Some software bug made a specific chip fry itself over time. Lots of models were affected (everything around t480 generation) and all chips were slowly burning untill the Bugfix was installed. So some units might be close to failure in one way or another if they received the fix late.

That being said. It's a relatively large chip that can be replaced with basic to mediocre soldering skills.

Is there a good way to actually use the trackpoint? Do any of you guys use the trackpoint exclusively for mouse control? I want to use it, because it's practically the whole point of the thinkpad, but it just feels unnatural. Especially when I have to scroll the page. Why even bother using the trackpoint when I'm reaching for the trackpad all the time anyway?

Just wanted to say thanks. I learned about Thinkpads here. Picked up the T420 back in 2016, upgraded it to an i7 2820QM, more RAM, and finally upgraded to a nice FHD screen in 2020 (AUO B140HAN01_3). It still performs decently for web browsing and light programming, even running Windows 10. Not bad for a machine released 12 years ago!

Anyone have experience with the parts from AliExpress? Like this palm rest/keyboard bezel, for example.

The chinese plastics are usually a little bit more brittle than the official, and the texture can be very slightly different. Most of the time the don;t come with any film or adhesive that comes on the stock plastic, so you'll either have to find a replacement or go without.
If your palmrest has just a little shiney then you probably shouldn't go for new plastics, but if the texture is noticeably different than it'll probably be an upgrade.

Hello, I've used all. Please take my advice.

T14 is good, though I recommend you get the 3rd generation AMD variant as they have 16:10 (once you go 16:10, you start to hate the older 16:9 models), 6000 series AMD are more power efficient and the iGPU's are very good.

For T14, I do not recommend Intel, battery life is just terrible and each generation it gets worse because Intel would rather nuke your battery than lose to AMD in performance.

I do not like the newer X1 Carbon's, the only X1 Carbon I recommend is the 6th gen (2018) with the QHD HDR LCD. T480 is also good, it has larger potential battery capacity and you can also swap in the HDR LCD from the X1 Carbon.

Disregarding the T14s since it is retarded to get an -s variant after 2013.

Any distro recommendation for a X280? Something that doesn't break touchscreen nor fingerprint functionality preferably

I love debian but anything but debian. At least until 12 gets stable.

it's corebooted, not librebooted
but I see in the settings the option to add a VGA BIOS image
is this what you're talking about?
There's also a "Legacy VGA text mode" and
"Run VGA Option ROMs" in graphics initialization

It wasn't that expensive when I got it during Christmas deals. Especially AMD. Battery life is good. It really doesn't start getting hot unless you are playing some game or doing like a LOT of rendering. I got it more as a toy but it has absolutely became my main laptop. Screen is actually comfy. My work MBP looks a little nicer display wise but isn't quite as handy. I really really like this things. I'm sorry you couldn't afford it because you were getting HRT shots.

what about the thinkbook? https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-ThinkBook-Notebook-Octa-Core-Fingerprint/dp/B0BPCDK1R6

Is this good for a cybersecurity student needing to run VMs with no lag?

that's nice. i got a p51 during the summer because my crappy ideapad laptop was breaking and i "needed" a new one now. if i were to waitfag a little bit i would get a p52, because the temps on this thing are absolutely insane. i'm getting as much as 86 celsius just browsing the web, and that's with an undervolted cpu. i don't know why the hell would they make a workstation that throttles itself just by using 50% of the cpu for a bit. other than that, i love the thing but it's kinda redundant now that the p52 goes for the same price
other than gayming though, it's been pretty good for video editing and shit like that
>>
should I trust this ? https://www.ebay.com/itm/204171972856

Also is this a fair price? Total noob be gentle

I would almost unironically push the Legion 7 over the P51. Like browsing, typing, watching a movie, doing normal whatever, blasting music on my player, etc....it stays cool to the touch.

Play Cyberpunk or MWII and you will hear the fan blasting and it will start getting like super warm. Like you would need Nomex gloves at thaat point. Yet it renders decently and edits pretty good. I really don't game that much. And when I do, it is in spurts. Also has a decent camera if you gotta zoom assholes or whatever. They keyboard is not like the x220 but is certainly serviceable. I can type fairly fast on it. The keys DO light up RGB unless you turn that faggot shit off. I mean....Most people think it is a churched up Dell or some shit. I do wish they would make like a Legion but with a trackpoint.

It doesn't totally replace a Thinkpad, like I haven't tried to put Linux on it or anything. So keep a few good Thinkpads in reserve for when Civil War II pops off. I got it for like a solid grand plus a few bills. Now it WILL go to 64 GB. I manually upgraded mine as it does NOT have soldered RAM.

I mean look into it. I like mine.

Thinkpad x280 - i5-8250/FHD/LTE modem for 300 Eurobucks. What do you guys think? I want something slim I can carry all day. Condition looks very good. Europe prices are fucked so this is one of the cheapest on kikebay. I hate the soldered RAM, T440p would be a good alternative but too big to carry on my back all day.
>>
is it worth it to mod my old x61 and use it as a daily driver? thinking of getting a new battery, swapping in an x61t screen, and doing the LED backlight conversion. is it worth it (i just have it laying about), or should i upgrade to an x230 or t440p? i'd get a custom motherboard for it, but it's too expensive for what it is desu.

T460 for $160 good ?

my x230 is now almost 11 years old, it just can't keep up with the software anymore. Recommendations for a new one to change the feeling as little as possible?

what's the best thinkpad one can get that still has the comfy chunky keyboard?

I'm trying out Fedora 37 on the X280 I just got, everything seems to work except the fingerprint reader, I checked the project page and this model of fingerprint reader is currently unsupported.
Any disadvantages to running windows as the host and just using VMs as needed?
>>
>>91161949
>comfy chunky keyboard
you mean the 7-row keyboard? x230 and t430 can both take the keyboard from their respective prior model. there's a t480 frankenpad, but it's too expensive and not as straightforward as dropping in the new keyboard and isolating some pins: https://www.xyte.ch/mods/t25-frankenpad/

hey nerds, what are my options for 16:10, =<14in thinkpads with at least 100% srgb and a relatively not shit cpu? (ryzen 4000+/non-15w 10th gen i7)

pref not a 2in1, but if they're for some reason less expensive i don't overly care - looking at ryzen 5k/4k x13, maybe a 10th gen x1 carbon? 11th seems a bit too expensive
>>
I bought a T480 off ebay for $215 256/16/i5. The internal battery is dead. Should I send it back or was it cheap enough to just buy a battery. Never messed with ebay before.
>>
what's this thinkpad called? i need to figure out how to dismantle it to replace the cmos battery. it's a tablet, and i cant really find an easy way to open it up, so instructions would be nice
>>
>>91166512
if it's an x12 or similar you probably have to pry it open with a heat gun
>>
>>91166554
probs not gonna be worth it then, i'll just set the time in the bios every time it boots up

>just bought a T480 i5
>tried to use the nipple
>felt it slow
>increase speed with xset (i'm using Manjaro)
>good precision and good speed
>still feels like i'm gonna break my keyboard in half while moving the trackpoint
Anons, it's not like i'm forcing the nipple, but i can slightly feel the thinkpad case being forced. My point is, is this normal? When you guys use your nipples it feels like in the long term you'll break your keyboard in two? It's my first thinkpad so i don't know how safe is to use the trackpoint. I'm a poorfag so i can't afford a brand new if i break this one.

I've heard about it, i'm not saying that i have the same precision as with the mouse, but it kinda feels comfy. I need to get more precision, but it comes with time. I'm worried because i don't know if it's normal to press a little bit harder to get the pointer faster, you know? It feels like if i keep pressing a little harder it will break in like 1 or 2 year of sovietic use.
>>91170846
Have you tried xset? My nipple was slow as fuck, i just set xset 8 0 and now it works fine.
>>
>>91170991
>if it's normal to press a little bit harder to get the pointer faster, you know?
yeah that's normal at least on the three thinkpads I've had
