Trying to upgrade my dell precision m6700 with a 4k screen, the screen works and it fits for the most part but the new screen has connector on the bottom with basically no space for the cable to go. The cable in question is rigid as fuck and makes the screen sit so high it's impossible to close the lid unless I bend the cable somehow

I took apart my thinkpad (because I'm a compulsive teardown guy) and I put it back together, but now it only boots with the charger, and gives a cmos error. I recently ordered a palmrest for my P52 and after disassembly I realized that the trackpad board is glued to the palm rest. Is this a thig? Am I retarded? there are no clips or similar things. Am I supposed to remove it and glue it to the new one? There's nothing on this on the internet. Just palmrests with easily replaceable (and separate) trackpads.

Something half the price of any of the branded ones is probably cheaper for a reason. I doubt you could go too wrong with any of the most common brand names. I keep recommending green cell since it seems to be the most available and reputable brand in europe and I've had success with their batteries. Duracell also sells batteries for thinkpads if you want to be extra safe about the brand but I have no idea about their quality.
Genuine OEM batteries are probably also still decent for x240.

So I really like my T470 with it's i5-6300u, but I'm regretting not spending more and getting higher end hardware. Not that this laptop is slow, everything is sufficient, but I do play games so I think want to get something like a Ryzen 3700U or similar instead of an i5-i7 8xxx series entirely just for the GPU. The intel IGP has been surprisingly usable with games like dark souls 2 getting 60fps at 720p, but the ryzen IGP benchmarks like twice as fast. Does this mean I get a T495 or is there another model?

Half of the work I do at my job is evaluating and/or repairing Lenovo machines.
I do not like the P15's, the chassis design is retarded. It's very hard not to break the tabs that keep the base cover in.

Everything starting with X240 switched from M-series to U-series CPUs, dropping the average TDP from ~35W to ~15W. Effectively, newer laptops draw about half the power. Combine this with the battery bridge system (which the X270 was the last to have) and a 9-cell external battery and you're looking at 10-12 hours of use on a single charge.

No experience here, but if my old X220 could do it I see no reason this shouldn't be able to. However, if you will be using VMs frequently, it may be worth getting an X280 instead. You lose out on a bit of battery and some ports, BUT the X280 has quad-core CPU configurations available that should be a huge boon for virtualization. I believe the X280 has a new smaller/lighter case as well.

X270s are also good because you can find them at a good price. I suppose most people either want the "old school" X220/X230 or the "new and shiny" X280; I picked up mine with 1080p IPS display, 256gb NVMe SSD, and 9-cell battery for $190. Can't go wrong with a price like that.

How to take care the dual battery for T480? They said that the battery usage is not the same like T460.

Is there a good way to actually use the trackpoint? Do any of you guys use the trackpoint exclusively for mouse control? I want to use it, because it's practically the whole point of the thinkpad, but it just feels unnatural. Especially when I have to scroll the page. I naturally want to use the 2-finger-slide to scroll the page, but if I use the trackpoint I have to go down to the trackpad. Why even bother using the trackpoint when I'm reaching for the trackpad all the time anyway?

When I got an X230 to cope with my X220's dated iGPU, I ended up liking the chiclet keyboard a whole lot more than the classic keyboard.

Just wanted to say thanks. I learned about Thinkpads here. Picked up the T420 back in 2016, upgraded it to an i7 2820QM, more RAM, and finally upgraded to a nice FHD screen in 2020 (AUO B140HAN01_3). It still performs decently for web browsing and light programming, even running Windows 10. Not bad for a machine released 12 years ago!

Anyone have experience with the parts from AliExpress? Like this palm rest/keyboard bezel, for example.

The chinese plastics are usually a little bit more brittle than the official, and the texture can be very slightly different. Most of the time the don;t come with any film or adhesive that comes on the stock plastic, so you'll either have to find a replacement or go without.
If your palmrest has just a little shiney then you probably shouldn't go for new plastics, but if the texture is noticeably different than it'll probably be an upgrade.

Hello, I've used all. Please take my advice.

T14 is good, though I recommend you get the 3rd generation AMD variant as they have 16:10 (once you go 16:10, you start to hate the older 16:9 models), 6000 series AMD are more power efficient and the iGPU's are very good.

For T14, I do not recommend Intel, battery life is just terrible and each generation it gets worse because Intel would rather nuke your battery than lose to AMD in performance.

I do not like the newer X1 Carbon's, the only X1 Carbon I recommend is the 6th gen (2018) with the QHD HDR LCD. T480 is also good, it has larger potential battery capacity and you can also swap in the HDR LCD from the X1 Carbon.

Disregarding the T14s since it is retarded to get an -s variant after 2013.

I just did a motherboard swap on my X270 and now it won't boot into the OS (Linux with GRUB). It finds the drive and all SSD diagnostics pass but when I try to boot it just takes me back to the menu. Googling shows that this is caused by an incorrect boot mode or secure boot setting but I configured everything before booting into the OS and have triple checked that everything is set properly.

It really doesn't start getting hot unless you are playing some game or doing like a LOT of rendering. I got it more as a toy but it has absolutely became my main laptop. Screen is actually comfy. Play Cyberpunk or MWII and you will hear the fan blasting and it will start getting like super warm. Like you would need Nomex gloves at thaat point. Yet it renders decently and edits pretty good. I really don't game that much. And when I do, it is in spurts. Also has a decent camera if you gotta zoom assholes or whatever. They keyboard is not like the x220 but is certainly serviceable.
