FAQ:
>How do I activate Windows?
https://github.com/massgravel/Microsoft-Activation-Scripts
HWID mimics upgrade activation to generate a permanent legitimate license.
(Does not work on VL editions that need KMS, avoid VL/KMS)

>>Which version should I install?
>Home/Pro
Comes with bloatware apps (games, music, news, weather, etc)
>Education/Workstation/Enterprise
Comes with basic system apps.
>LTSC / IoT LTSC
LTSC = 5 years support, VL/KMS only
IoT LTSC = 10 years support, HWID only
Comes with Win32 system apps, no MS Store, no feature updates, security updates only.
If you need MS Store, run this in cmd:
wsreset -i

There are no compatibility differences between versions.

>Do I even need IoT LTSC?
W10 Home/Pro/Edu/WS/Ent editions end support in 10/2025, LTSC in 2027, IoT LTSC lasts until 2032.

>How do I activate Office?
https://github.com/abbodi1406/KMS_VL_ALL_AIO/releases
Installs a KMS server emulator, not ideal as KMS trips AV sometimes and deactivates. Alternatively, use MSOffice through your browser since it's free. As a last resort, you can try OnlyOffice/LibreOffice/WPS/Polaris and set it to save as MSOffice file formats.

now that everyone has access to wsl mount you might even be able to deploy directly onto a qcow2 with the right tools
>somebody please I cant find on
from reading qemu's windows specific bits it looks like qemu tricks windows into thinking that it's running on hyper-v to keep it happy so presumably you'd use a windows vhdx prepared to run in hyper-v either directly or convert it into a qcow2

Same. Still a terrible fucking daily driver for desktop purposes or using modern hardware, ran into so many issues mainly stemming from the hardware in the rig I just built, Linux really doesn't play nice with bleeding edge shit.

I had a week of 24/7 troubleshooting, followed by a week of relative calm and then back to troubleshooting a whole other set of problems. I swapped distros/platforms and ran into a whole new unique set of issues. Fuck that shit. I truly don't believe people when they say shit like "I've been on linux since 01' and never ran into a single problem for anything!!" I think their brain has just been pozzed from being their own IT support 24/7.
>>
>>89932208
Linux is only relevant for a few specific cases.

1. Servers
2. VMs (literally everyone I know in my field keeps a copy of Kali ready to boot at all times)
3. Getting old hardware to function well again, because Linux is significantly less resource intensive.

It will never be up to par for daily desktop use. Linux is just a toolkit as it stands, a toolkit easy to have ready to go on a VM, or if absolutely necessary dual boot.
>>
>>89932304
I mostly think of Linux as just a way to make older HDD reliant computers that can't run 10 well work again in an efficient fashion.

I can get a W10 Edu key for <£15 off of a website, would that allow me to get a free upgrade to W11?
Got a new monsitor that uses HDR
>>
>>89932493
Changing to 11 for a good reason mostly comes to your hardware age. Is it fairly recent? Do you have a 12th or 13th gen Core or 5th gen Ryzen? 11 uses these newer parts more efficnetly then 10 does.

>>89932654
I mean you could just get an ISO from the paste and install Education for free then activate it with a third party program, but yeah if you buy that Education key and have a new enough computer to automatically get the 11 update, then it'll still be activated with said key after the update's done.

MAS HWID can't activate 11 at all?
>>
>>89932703
Yeah I'd say that's new enough that using 11 would end up pretty solid for you. Remember to use Education.
If you can't get use to 11's UI changes you can install ExplorerPatcher and tweak it to look more like 10 or what have you.

>>
is there any reason to switch to 11 other than how it looks?
>>
>>89933226
Certain newer processors have something called E-cores which 10 can't use in any way, while 11 can. It also has an Auto HDR feature which makes color/lighting in games look nicer and a new I/O feature called DirectStorage which makes things load faster on supported hardware/software.

I would watch that anime and also if it is interesting and well done, it would make me like Microsoft more. If it is a proper fanservice anime and gets like a beach episode and a space episode and probably and episode where it crosses over with the anime about the LISP horse maids and the windows maids and the LISP horse riding maids have to play space paintball.

Every time someone gets hit with a paintball instead of paint a circle with a 6 inch diameter vanishes from their clothing. A player is eliminated when their clothing is completely gone.

Other teams of anime maids can also be pulled in to make this a tournament arc. The last episode can end with an atomic bomb joke which causes every maid participating in the tournament to become naked simultaneously

Alternatively they could all play a game like Keijo. Keijo was probably the only sports related story that has ever been interesting.

It could be like a battle show and they can have vehicles and like a Maid Zord that fights big monsters and other robots. Or like the maid has to go in a submarine to the arctic or something?

If I knew how to make a Stable Diffusion Drawing Computer, I would make these things and post images, but I have not gotten a list I find comprehensible yet and picking parts is a very confusing task to me.

Thank yoy dra/g/pns for reading my post.

it does unless you're running a VL version like regular 11 enterprise, which requires kms or server
>>
>>89936336
Oh so both Enterprise and Enterprise LTSC can only be KMS activated? Learn something new every day.
Also I wonder if anyone has tried out MAS's KMS activation which is a fork of KMS_VL_ALL's that actually uses real public KMS servers for no antivirus troubles. Sounds pretty nifty.

I made a FAT32 primary partition on a GPT usb stick and copied over the files from the Windows 10 install iso to the created partition. It doesn't boot from BIOS but it boots from qemu with ovmf and the ovmf_code and ovmf_vars loaded. Why does this happen?

So the PC at my office is shared and some dumbass infected it with that one shortcut virus that makes USB drives apear as shortcuts.

Windows <11 uses E-cores fine.

>>
>>89937846

It's not a problem with the USB drive per se, it's the pc but google isn't helping.

some lg thing
https://www.lg.com/us/ultrawide-monitors
>>
>>89938426
Everything has changed how I deal with files. I barely ever browse folders other than music, I just search the item I want. When I save files, I descriptively tag them in filename so that when I need it, I can just search it. For example character names for art. Some of my file names look like aliexpress listings, trying to add all the relevant words I might try when looking for it later. If it's some obscure utility with weird name, i just put a text file in its folder with keywords for what the program does. Search the keywords, double click on the path at the right of the file to open its location. I have a note folder. For any useful strings of text or code or writing, I just toss them all there. I think it's because it's instant and so reliable unlike windows search, you can rely on it for... everything.

Organizing things in folders only makes sense when you are trying to make collections of items where you don't necessarily know what you are looking for, like when browsing art or music. For things you know when you need them, you only need it to be searchable.

GOD Windows Explorer STILL sucks so much dick, even after all these years. Even on a fresh install of W11, I was still getting that dreaded green loading bar where a folder would take like an entire minute or longer to load. And it only had like a dozen things in there. And that was after rebuilding search index, too.

I replaced everything I could with DOpus which was a godsend. But I still can't replace the File Open/Save dialogs that get opened from within browsers or other applications. Maybe someday.

It just sucks how sometimes all the thumbnails in explorer will just disappear. Cleared caches, rebuilt, everything, and it still happens now and again.

FYI DOpus is great if you're looking for a replacement. Can create incredibly fine-tuned rules for sorting/display based on what folder you're in, split-window panes with multiple tabs for different folders, and you can even setup a window the way you like it and save it so you can one-click open that setup whenever you want. Extremely powerful searching. Even supports scripting if you want to get rid of tedious repetitive operations. And no random slowdowns like in explorer. I really like how powerful the preview pane is too, you can even preview video files (including webms) easily

TC is another great option. Really anything is better than Windows Explorer.

I ultimately went with DOpus because I liked the customizability better, and its built-in scripting. I use that to auto-apply labels to files, and then use the advanced search to search by label. Of course you can create your own custom plugins for TC, but that is more involved.

Okay you guys know how in the file explorer on Windows 7 you can just type whatever and it starts automatically filtering the results so you can find what you're looking for? How do I make it do that on Windows 10? Because when I type in the file explorer on Windows 10, I have to press enter or click the arrow for it to start filtering and searching my computer for a file associated with the words I type.

Is there an update or something I missed? Was it ever a Windows 10 feature? Just kind of curious because it's really fucking weird that it wouldn't be there. I have Windows 10 LTSC.

that search box specifically is by far the single buggiest piece of windows it's got a ton of little tiny bugs like that
but this
>I have to press enter or click the arrow for it to start filtering and searching my computer
is good
it's not "automatically starting filtering," it has to backtrack and recursively rescan and validate your input for every new characher
it may cause people like you to think it's less responsive or something but it means faster searches
>>

Is there any reason it's constantly and randomly running into deadlocks? Why is it crazy to think an OS needs to be relatively stable before having a stability focused version. It's not like I'm a 7igger who refuses to change for the sake of it. I'll probably upgrade to 11 in about 2 years, I'm just waiting for it to mature a bit more.
>>
>>89945646
>Why is it crazy to think an OS needs to be relatively stable before having a stability focused version
That isn't what I said, nor is it what he said.
They don't make LTSC when an OS is stable enough they make it when it is old enough, it is based on a predetermined date of 2024, not stability.
They could make a stable version of 2022H2 if they wanted to, but obviously that isn't their intention.
>I'll probably upgrade to 11 in about 2 years, I'm just waiting for it to mature a bit more.
That is fine, I take no issue with that reasoning
>>
>>89945678
>they make it when it is old enough

>>
>debloat windows 11 with OP programs

On a dated laptop I'm getting the same performance as on W10. Comfy.
>>
>>89945761

Being on the long-term support branch doesn't mean it's good. LTSB 2015 stands testament to this.
In addition, LTSB 2016, LTSC 2019 had exactly the same issues as the current branch for the first six months of their lives. LTSC 2021 still does.
The cherry on top is that while /g/ mouths the words about 5/10 years support ad nauseum, they switch to the next LTS version the second it drops. Every second post ITT for two months before LTSC 2021 dropped was "WHERE LTSC???!!!?!!!?!11!!!?!???!!!1!!!?!1one!!eleven!!!"
TL;DR: it's not a panacea. Most "people" who use it do so to save them uninstalling UWP apps - nothing more.

>>
>>89947616
Anon who is considering 11 at the moment here. What exactly makes 11 more customizable?
>>
>>89947845
It's not really that it's "customizable" it's more that there's lots more programs for it to make it feel more like 10 for instance. Like ExplorerPatcher and WinaeroTweaker, though WinaeroTweaker is also for 10.
>>
>>89947845
>What exactly makes 11 more customizable?
Mica for Everyone (doesn't work on 10)
ExplorerPatcher (primarily written for Windows 11; has many functions that won't work on 10)
WinAeroTweaker (all the best tweaks are available for 11 anyway).

Windows 11 even still has a lot of the legacy stuff from 10 leftover, like the old taskbar and it's settings, etc. So you can make Windows 11 a crystal copy of Windows 10 if you wanted to.

Primarily why I like 11 more than 10 for customizability is that it's got an actual functioning aero glass with acrylic and mica. 10 had an aero glass program but it's dev abandoned it and it stopped supporting updates past 1809 if I'm correct.

You can easily just add the registry keys needed in the VM during the setup so you can bypass the checks.
>Shift+F10 to get to a command line

>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup
>Make a new key in Setup called LabConfig

Close everything up and continue with installing and you want get gated.

The commands for Windows 10 to pull out Metro apps work largely the same on 8.x. They might require slight adjustments - I seem to recall 8.x has no concept of a "provisioned AppX", so you have to remove the apps for every user.
Or I could be talking out my ass - it's been years since I've had to configure an 8.x machine (that wasn't Server 2012 [R2]).

Tried it. New features are neat. It's worth to try if you're curious. You might also want to try the debloter or other things so you can be better prepared if Microsoft forces you to update in the future

If you need to ask this question, stick with something relatively light (and more importantly, easily reversed) like wpd.app.
There are other tools - hell, there are BETTER other tools - but they're far more hands-on, have more assumed knowledge, sometimes slow, rarely as easily undone, and have caused serious shit for anons weeks/months down the track *coughOptimize-Offlinecoughcough*.

That's freetard-tier misunderstanding - only they think webservers are speshul and magical, because it's the only type of server where they can beat Windows.

First off I never said cloud =/= webserver
Second, let us not detract from the original premise, "if you use linux you must be unemployeed"
Even if all they used it for was a webserver, Microsoft would still be a valid counterexample, so would IBM, Google, Amazon, NASA, the fucking New York Stock Exchange. This spiraled out of control because your first thought was to immediately discredit any counterexample to this premise instead of just let it go, the point of my post was "why are you being so mean" I didn't want to have this debate with you because I honestly don't even think your premise, it was just a throwaway counter example that I thought was ironic in the Microsoft thread. all I want is for you to stop being mean to people in the friendly thread, not try to start an argument by insulting people that agree with you

Yeah, it's bretty gud if you've got the hardware to back it up. Microsoft actually chose well for their "arbitrary" Coffee Lake/Zen+ minimum requirement: if you've got that or more, it's worth the step-up.

Just tried out VirtualBox 7's new unattended install option and god damn this is a neat new feature. It installed 11 Home for me while skipping all needed interaction. Hell it completely skipped the OOBE.

On Win10, any software out there can make explorer play gifs automatically when view is set to extra large icons?
>>

It isn't really "new" - it's been there since at least 6.0.
It's probably sprouted new features I'm unaware of, however.

>>89950656
I haven't though 11 was bad for a while now. It's honestly quite comfy after you mess with it's defaults.
>>
>>89950735
None that I'm aware of - but from my understanding of how shell extensions work, there's nothing precluding making one.
Having said that, you would have to write it Properly(TM) - with naive code, you'd get 10,000 GIFs starting to animate when you go into Large Icon mode, and that would be... unfortunate.

>>
>>89950823
You don't need to: both suggested activation solutions (KMS_VL_ALL and MAS) automatically set the right key while they're doing their shit.
Or are you having the issue where Windows doesn't offer you the option of Education (just installing Home or Pro without asking first), or you can't get past the "please enter product key" screen?
>>
>>89950823
Is your 11 Education already installed?

>>
>>89950823
You don't need a key. Either MAS or KMS_VL_ALL can activate Windows for you via the HWID or KMS/KMS38 method. HWID activation is permanent and acts like OEM activation while KMS mimics how enterprise computers keep activated.

Yep, there's plenty of magic moments if you lose power/the USB/optical/fucking floppy falls out, the machine will never boot for you again without at least a JTAG programmer.
I've never flashed firmware without the machine plugged into a UPS and in a minimal hardware configuration, but I'm one paranoid fuck since the aliens kidnapped me, probed my asshole, then nuked my city a couple of days before Independence Day in '96.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's what ei.cfg is for.
>>
>>89951017
So ei.cfg setting the channel to retail makes sure that all editions on an ISO can be selectable if your hardware actively blocks being able to, cause recently I haven't needed ei.cfg to gain access to all the edition on a Techbench ISO on the couple PCs I've tried.
>>
>>89950994
You don't really need to do that since the ISOs you get from there will give you the option to install any edition except LTSC during setup:

Don't disable it. Enable it and set it to 0.
It's the same as creating the AllowTelemetry DWORD in the registry and setting it to 0.
This is also accounting for the fact that you should be using Education right now so the 0 option actually is accepted by the OS.

is there a way to make the password field appear by default?
>>
>>89956028
So you want to disable the lock screen then? You can do it either through group policy or directly through the registry.
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Personalization > Do not display the lock screen, and enable that.
Or via the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows, make a new key called Personalization then make the DWORD NoLockScreen and set it to 1.
Next time you start up the computer you won't get a lock screen and it'll go directly to the password entry.

I don't believe it'll work on AMD because of a bug that prevents XP and earlier from working properly (hence why you can run them in VMs but ONLY without CPU virtualisation acceleration).

Also, Windows XP won't install from USB by default because the installer doesn't have USB d rivers loaded.

it is imprecise by virtue of the codec, the frames later in the video needs key frames from an earlier point in the video from your cut, the solution is to crop around your the section you need, then reencode it

Specifically this is worse than the normal keyframe issue all progressive codecs have because DASH segments don't give a flying fuck about the video's own GOP size. You should really just download the entire video and crop it with ffmpeg.
