Repost in the new thread because I'm a crayon eating moron.

Ok guys, you're the only other people I know who are as autistic about sound yet uncaring about /mu/ as I am so I think you can answer some questions for me. I'm going to make a Hi-Fi setup for headphone/iem exclusive use as my space is shared with my fiancé. I plan on using Schiit components for my Amp/Receiver, and likely pairing with some Sennheiser open-back over-ear Headphones for most use. I do have a good deal of physical media (cassettes, vinyl, cds) but I tend towards streaming high quality audio because of convenience and abundance of music I don't own.

Is a dedicated DAC worth it if I'm streaming via usb connection from my phone/pmp or am I wasting my time and money?

>>89914235
The most common is T400 size which is around 5 mm. If you have a caliper, measure your IEM's nozzle. A ruler with mm markings will usually give a good enough estimate. If you're on the edge between two sizes, get the smaller one because if they're a bit too small they stretch pretty easily, but if they're too big they fall off.

This literally happened with a Topping release, one of their cheaper offerings several years ago. Garbage products should be put on the spot, yes, but don't be disingenuous when Topping has released something exactly like that.
>>
>>89911647
You get your average listening volume (say 80dB), then add dynamic range of your music(6dB for metal, 40dB for classical), then add 1dB for Windows, then add eq headroom if needed, then if you're using some streaming service you add its headroom too(spotify has like 17dB). You might easily end up needing like 140dB but for normal listening apple dongle is truly all you need.
>>
>>89914572
>yeah just add 90 db just to be safe, and another 50 because why not
>>
If your headphones can't do 180dB you aren't even trying.

lforgot to reply but the connector itself simply won't stay snug and tight on the IEM. The left one is as stiff and tight as it was from the beginning while the right one can spin around with a gentle push of the finger, it's that loose. And I'm sure it's not just my imagination but I've noticed that bass heavy moments in games, movies and music are just more pronounced on the intact left IEM and no amount of unplugging and replugging with the FiiO MMCX detaching tool helps. I looked it up and apparently it's a somewhat common issue for others as well. I contacted FiiO and they saw my recorded video and told me they'll replace it so hooray
>>
>>89914720
>>89914735
Headphones won't actually reach that volume, you'll just need it because music isn't 100% loud all the time. But reaching 130dB on peaks is realistic, that's about what you get on concerts.

I don't know how people can find foam tips comfortable, the isolation is great but I feel like the force they apply to my inner ear is too much because the foam is too dense

Silicone etc. just molds to my ears without discomfort usually. Latex tips are the best, but I don't like them in the winter because they require some time to get molded by body heat.

Also with foam tips I have a constant fear of getting an ear infection (because I got one when I was reusing foam earplugs for sleeping) - and I assume foam tips are just as bad for bacteria

Exactly. I've always found it muddy when it's boosted much past there, and thin when there's no bass boost at all.
>>
JQ 4U Pro are very nice. I consider it V-shape, certainly not neutral. Tons of detail in both low and high end. The contrast enhances separation. Rec if you acknowledge it's from a company with almost zero footprint and get it on sale. I got mine for under $160, punches way up in that context
>>
>>89927879
mud shit eq preference why are you even here?
>>
>>89926695
I don't see the problem here. It's a cable, and this one happens to have fabric covering. Some people prefer fabric for how it feels and looks like a single thing instead of wires braided together. It may also increase longevity since it takes some of the wear from strain, and prevents skin oils from reaching the plastic insulation on the wires and stiffening them.
>>
>>89923804
Narrow vs wide makes way more difference than that.
>>
>>89923156
Open back headphones + decent quality live recording can sound outside your head. I've even had that experience with decent IEMs though their frequency response needs to be such that the ambient "air" noise in the upper treble sounds natural.

Open backs overlay the music on top of the ambient "feel" of the room you're in. This can feel more natural because the ambient sounds aren't being distorted so much by weird FR curves or resonances in the cups or ear canals. It's also congruent with what you're seeing since if you're listening in a large living room, it sounds like a large living room.

IEMs or closed backs block out almost all of the room noise, and any ambient "feel" must come from what's in the recording. It will sound "off" or entirely inside your head if mid to upper treble has weird bumps, if you don't have a very good quality recording, or if you're listening to studio mixes which don't have any real ambient air noise. But if you listen to a good live recording on good IEMs, it can sound outside your head. It will still be incongruent with what you're seeing though, like you can be seeing your bedroom but hearing a large arena. If you don't like this, close your eyes for a better experience, or get open backs.

Dunu Kima just arrived
First thing I immediately noticed is that they're midbass forward and bleed into the mids slightly but not too much, mostly just a warm signature.
These tube tips are my new favourite tips over spinfits for deep insertion, I just wish the outer bit was a little softer.
The ~3khz region is tuned perfectly and low enough for me to not be painful like the titan S was
The peak at ~4100k is definitely noticeable but not sharp or piercing, just tonnaly off and combined with the ~6200khz recession can make vocals a touch nasaly and closed.
Perfectly usable without EQ. Very smooth, non fatiguing or sibilant impression overall, just tonally a bit off.
I'm happy

Build quality seems good so far so hopefully these won't just fall apart like the arias and titan S did

I'm using one of these now but for brick DACs I'd make a loop out of the bottom half of the IEM cable to put around my neck and wear the DAC like a pendant. I used qudelix over bluetooth like that but it would be fine over USB as well.

look for something that has 0.5 ohm output impedance. lower and near-zero impedance output. The one HBB uses is good enough I think it has about 0.01 ohms but I don't remember the brand and has gain mode so it werks with low sensitivity / high impedance headphones and also IEMs.

having a hard time picking between the Hexa and Olina SE need help
>>
>>89935835
Muddy 1DD vs crappy BAs, decisions decisions.
>>
>>8993583
HEXA if you don't mind recessed vocals and upper mids
Olina if you don't mind some mid bass bloat
>>
>>89935835
Olina for soundstage alone
But generally I would recommend comparing graphs and just go with your gut so you can pretend you're making an intelligent purchase decision
or just pick the one that looks nicer cause they are sidegrades if you EQ
>>
>>89936233
If you EQ olina is obviously better. But CRA is even better.
>>
>>89936257
Delusional.
>>
>>89935835
Olina SE: more aggressive treble, female voices will SING, faster presentation across all frequencies, warmer bass
Hexa: more neutral, even presentation. Less contrast between low and high end. Frankly slow DD bass, inoffensive treble, but perhaps lacking sparkle. Hybrid driver config does not elevate techs above Olina SE
t. own both
>>
Btw some anon mentioned Olina wins in soundstage. Unsure if he's just parroting heresay or owns both as well, but this is indeed true. Especially if you desire a secondary purpose of gaming with your IEMs, Olina SE > Hexa. Hexa has VERY poor gaming performance, incredibly flat presentation of 3D soundstage. Is not such a significant factor in music listening

>>
>>89939988
i am somewhat skeptical and think it should not have be rec'd until further investigation
though hzsound has made some respectable models, they claim CNT diaphragm in their marketing. well, afaik Olina SE is the cheapest entry to a legitimate CNT driver, previously found in $280 O2. there do exist IL-legitimate CNT drivers, ofc cheaper much lower quality. now would hzsound lie? are they being lied to? are they just slightly fibbing and it's DLC or some other carbon? we cannot know and thus it's a bit more of a gamble than Aria SE, which we know has DLC (and the paint issues, fine) or Olina SE which we know has CNT (and no paint issues??). if you are willing to go for it, from graphnigger i see no reason it should be significantly different than the aforementioned competitors. i do like that plain chrome look one, prefer it over aesthetics of olina se. snow is nice but kinda weeby and effeminate

Yeah, that's kinda awkward. This is why I'd rather use wireless if it's all the same. What I usually use is a Qudelix 5K, which is a wireless DAC that can clip to a shirt collar and then I use a short cable with my IEMs. The 5K uses Bluetooth with the LDAC codec, and my phone lets me select the bitrate up to 990 kbps, which is still lossy but as far as I can tell is indistinguishable from lossless. The only issue is audio delay but that doesn't matter with music, the Android YouTube app compensates for the delay, and I don't play much mobile games.
>>
Any good black friday IEM deals? I want something cheap and decent. I'm not much of an audiophile as my hearing is fucked from the first years of my life being riddled with ear infections. >>89947587
vorbis isn't usually great simply because the audio decode for vorbis signal final output is always 32bit which wouldn't really go well if your android doesn't support 32bit natively as most phones only go around 24bit (go check your android's /proc/asound/.../hw_params file while playing vorbis audio). if your device natively supports or has a 32bit dac or external dac then vorbis is fine but just to make sure try to play back the 32bit vorbis audio to your music player and check hw_params. some music player when you turn on certain settings such as convolvers or equalizer would downsample everything to 16bit.

if you're to use 256kbps lossy it's a much better idea to use qaac than opus since: opus unnecessarily encapsulates all converted audio into 48k sample rate - which causes terrible conversion from 44.1->48 (keep in mind such conversion will result in quality degradation considering the fact opus encoder doesn't provide samplerate function encoder quality (iirc it was speex that's optimized for quick encode) - contrary to bitrate quality which opus has available it has no option for resampling quality).
>>

I have one, it's bad. Not because the quality is bad, but because the concept of cables that thick is bad. Also mine is cloth covered so it's extra microphonic, never again. Redeem yinyoo.

0.1db is already too much but depends if you have impaired hearing issue it won't matter anyway.

my daily driver earphones only have 0.05dB channel imbalance on certain frequencies and going beyond 0.1dB/1dB is way too obvious especially on bass region as it is placed center channel on most music (unless there is -0.1dB/-1dB somewhere in the spectrum but bass region mismatch will certainly be obvious regardless). Most chifishit I had usually have garbage driver matching and sometimes the average with my graphs say that the other drivers are louder so I had to open the IEM and twist the dynamic drivers until they match since I don't have the patience to ask chang to replace them for 8days only to get a worse unit because they simply do not measure their shit (manufacturer), then why would I expect the seller do the same?

>convert opus 128kb, vorbis 128kb, aac/mp3 128kb
>open sneedacity
>import the lossless audio (flac/wav/tta)
>sneedacity split channel, delete left channel, pan volume of right channel to left
>import the converted audio
>sneedacity split channel, delete left channel, pan volume of right channel to right
>shift the converted audio until the timestamps match
audio should sound very "mono".
turns out opus is the only odd one out where the audio on the opus channel becomes slightly louder than the original or than vorbis/mp3/aac encode.
opus is NOT transparent and worse is the opus devs actually added gain to the sound or it could be a conversion algorithm issue.
this is not a blind test but an easy way to find which encode is inferior to the other.

I'm thinking about buying the TRN EMX but literally 100% of reviews seem like paid shills
>>
>>89950818
also, even with opus at 256 or even 510kbs per channel it wouldn't improve the result.
reproducible issue. wanted to report the issue on the devs but considering how they responded with other issues from the past might just avoid it. too glad most anime encodes aren't opus though. sometimes I always pause the seasonals I'm watching and say "this sounds very opus" and there it is. opus has distinct sound, bloated, muddy, and lowres.

>TRN of all people have shills
nah. that's the reason they split from kz.
you never really see positive reviews from them off audio reviewers except from the time hbb praised v80 over the "most praised" zsn (the most shilled iem to date, shilled by shill reviewers).
if anything, TRN actually has legitimate balance armatures that stick up than other shit like dusk or kzs with unsoldered BA. if it dies on your trn you just simply blow it hard enough.

Damn the topping dx1 is smaller and cuter than I thought it'd be, got it for $60 from shenzhen on 12/11 so very fast shipping for my country, usually wait like 3 weeks for stuff from china.
Seems well built, plugged my active speakers into it as well so getting double value out of it.
>>
>>89950818
>>89950864
Interesting, I admit I did not research all that. And I guess that bloated gain issue did not become apparent to my ears because the bulk of my flacs-to-opus files were poor quality live bootlegs.

Whenever I plug my iems into my phone randomly the volume will go down like the volume button is held down but it only has a pause button. It seems like it depends on how the cord is positioned like a wierd connection or something idk.
Any idea what to do? Maybe a setting on android that atleast disables external volume control

he's a meme. not legit, just a typical poojeet that is too full of himself. harman tuning isnt even all that great, it just takes away warmth and makes the bass sound like dogshit. also, please sign up for my paywall so i can pretend to be your friend.

you have literal aspergers if you think a wired dac makes more sense than a bluetooth one when you don't want to fumble around with extra cables
Any dac bigger than a apple dongle is a fucking nuisance to carry around dangling from your phone

Should I store silica gel in my IEM case?

>>89953456
yes, esp if you live in tropical or humid areas
>>
>>89952182
They don't have the same bass you would expect from an IEM, and I don't think that they have enough if you are after a particularly bassy set, but they definitely have details galore and sound like nothing I have ever heard of before. I don't think you should go for them blindly. The SA6 and M9 do similar things, but they are incredible. The best way to describe them is that they try to wow you with the sheer amount of detail you can hear without muddying it up, or losing anything. They're not 10/10. But fuck, they are close.

I'll listen more and report.

No aspergers but i might be retarded anon
I am so sorry
I thought the btr5 was a pmp, i didnt realize it was bluetooth connected to the phone
I did have another anon tell me about a bluetooth dac yesterday >>89941716 and i told him the latency wouldnt work for me >>89941964
However now that i think about it, i have a better laptop than i used to, and i can watch my non yt content on there, so it might work
However im assuming btr has the same latency?
>>
>>89954814
There is low latency Bluetooth but both your Bluetooth earphones and you laptop need to support the right codecs. If your laptop doesn't support you might be lucky and have a somewhat easy to replace wifi/Bluetooth card in there, you can get a new intell wifi / bluetooth card that supports Bluetooth 5.2 and the needed coecs for like $25 and in theory it's very easy to swap. Real about low latency Bluetooth codecs and see if they will work for your usecase. Generally they should be fast enough to watch videos without noticeable audio delay.
>>
>>89953111
8ba and 2dd for that price? seems to me like they might be counting the total number of drivers rather than per side.
