I want to do a cheap, low-power, ECC server build. Ryzen seems like the best option. (Also I find PSP less scary than ME)
>mobo
Most likely asrock since they have official ECC support, curious how much lower the power consumption is on an ITX board compared to mATX. I don't have much experience with modern components.
>CPU
Which ryzens are low power? 4c is enough.

I'm hopintg the itx versions will have space for AIO coolers without the tubing pushing on the ram

More early OP spam from a biased individual who needs to cheat because he has no argument. This OP was posted before the bump limit of 310 because he needs to include lines like

>Gaming: R5 5600/X, i5 12400/F+cooler

in an attempt to make LGA1700 seem more expensive. As noted many, many times before, the RM1 (Intel box cooler) and the Wraith Stealth (AMD box cooler) are both good for gaming and occasional all core workloads but bad for sustained all core workoads like video editing.

If the RM1 can almost get full multicore perf out of a 125W power unlocked i7 12700, then there's no way it has any problems with a 65W CPU under gaming workloads, as proven many times.
https://youtu.be/2J0iP520WoY?t=758
https://youtu.be/yhKBABCfmpk?t=260

OP is a joke; do not take any of its recommendations seriously.

I'm looking for a case that has up to 340mm of GPU clearance, a dark tint or solid side panel, with out the back compartment and PSU shroud you see on a lot of cases. I would prefer something with the normal ATX style lay out of PSU mounted on the top but bottom is fine as long as there's no shroud.
Ive only found micro ATX cases and discontinued ones.
I also want straight air flow. So front intake rear exhaust, bottom intake top exhaust.
Suggestions?
I really prefer how nicely managed cables look compared to hidden cables.
I think computers like pic rel look way better than normal say nzxt h500 clone with armored mobo, GPU, aio.

They will cover it in ugly plastic and shitty heatsinks sadly.
I'm going to take the entire thing of armor and metal off my Asus board and install nice copper heatsinks from ali on it

I'd like to get a 12700(non-K), limit it to 65W and undervolt it for lower temperatures and noise. What DDR4 motherboard should I get? B660 or Z690? I also plan to use my Cl16-3000mhz 32gb DDR4 kit with it.
It'd be nice for it to have wifi & bluetooth, but boards with this feature set are extremely expensive for some reason. Can/should I look for used models?

>>88021131
i'm concerned about the perfomance, i've read people say that the usb ones have bad range compared to the wifi card, but for the quality they're about the same
i usually stands up and walk around my house while still having my earbuds on (to get drinks while waiting at the loading screen or stuff like that) so good range coverage is definitely something i want
>>

>can you be more specific about the problems? bad range or like shuttering connection?
both. with add-in pci-e cards there is relatively little quality control with drivers and such, and USB adapters are generally bad

Rule of thumb is generally just match frequency and CAS latency, subtimings too ideally but not as big a deal.

Again, good luck
Whether refurbished or through a private seller, you're taking a risk. As far as the former, you're better of getting 'manufacturer refurbished' board since they bother to actually check if it works. Otherwise, places like Micro Center barely check for shit, so that's typically a gamble.
As far as the later, make sure the seller didn't jizz on it.

It is leftover marketing from Ryzen 1 when you couldn't do more than 2666 Mhz without having Samsung B-Die or some other special snowflake shit, that is no longer the case since the 3000 series Ryzen chips, memory support is all but a non-issue these days up to 3600 MHz.

I really do get where you're getting at, but at the same time, I feel like you're creating your own woes.

I would still get/try the USB option, and if it doesn't work out, save it for backup/troubleshooting purposes and get a PCIe card.

Or like others have mentioned, get a board with one built in.

it's not quite that simple, but technically the "fastest" setup you will get is 2 sticks of dual rank memory in dual channel mode.

4 sticks of single rank isn't that far behind but it wont always be as simple compatibility wise.

4 Sticks of dual rank is probably gonna be technically slower and... "less easy" for a system to run but that doesnt mean it wont work.

In reality, you wont notice any of it as long as it runs.

This. There is absolutely NO reason you need NVME over SSD. If you are expert enough to run specialized software that actually benefits from it, then you wouldn't be asking here in the first place.

SSDs for main drives, back them up every day to multiple HDDs. Easy. There's even the W7 automatic backup feature (still in W10 too) if you need an easy-mode.

Redundancy should be your #1 concern, thank me later. I've learned the hard way in the past

It's already unlikely enough that BOTH your main SSD and your backup HDD will fail at the same time.

But if you really care about your data that much, that's when you backup to at least 2 separate drives. Different manufacturers/models/batches too if you really want to get autistic about it.

I have an RX 6900 XT, connected to my 1080p 144 Hz monitor via DisplayPort. One minute, it was working fine, the next, it stopped. Now, only HDMI works. If I plug the DisplayPort cable in, Windows detects it as a 720p 60 FPS monitor, but when I select the DisplayPort input on my monitor, it just says "No signal."
I plugged it into a different monitor (4K) via DisplayPort, and it works, except it only goes up to 30 FPS for some reason.

Yes, I re-installed the drivers. Unfortunately I don't have any other DP cables.
I should mention this started when I first turned my PC on. It came up like normal (using DP), and then I got an error message about it not being able to find my OS. I've had this same issue before, and I'm 99% certain it's because my SSD may be dying (although picrel says otherwise). When that happens, I fix it by going into the mobo's BIOS and manually selecting the SSD from the list of boot devices. For some reason, when I did that, the entire PC froze. I had to hold the power button down to shut it off. When I turned it back on, no more DP.

Does anyone have any advice on builds/parts for a PC intended for creating motion graphics? I’m trying to put something together for a family member, and my knowledge of parts is more centered around conventional video editing and high end gaming stuff. Heads up, if you use a B550 gigabyte and you use the onboard Realtek NIC you might not want to use the latest w11 drivers. Haven't tested the 10 ones, but the 11 drivers exhibit a problem that network drivers for these boards used to have over a year ago where your connection might go down if you download something at high speeds. I can't believe they regressed there.

Is it possible to gain or lose fps between different BIOS versions?

For some reason the automatic settings on an older BIOS set vddg iop to 1.05v and the newer ones set it to 0.95v. I tested some game out without changing a thing, using the exact same other settings on the BIOS on both and got around 8fps more on the older BIOS than the newer one under the same exact conditions. Are these things correlated or am I missing something here? Maybe an AGESA version thing?

https://devblogs.microsoft.com/directx/directstorage-is-coming-to-pc/

We’re excited to bring DirectStorage, an API in the DirectX family originally designed for the Velocity Architecture to Windows PCs! DirectStorage will bring best-in-class IO tech to both PC and console just as DirectX 12 Ultimate does with rendering tech. With a DirectStorage capable PC and a DirectStorage enabled game, you can look forward to vastly reduced load times and virtual worlds that are more expansive and detailed than ever.

Recent advancements in SSD and PCIe technologies, specifically NVMe technologies, allow gaming PCs to have storage solutions that deliver far more bandwidth than was ever possible with older hard drive technologies. Instead of tens of megabytes per second, drives like the upcoming Xbox Series X console’s custom NVMe can deliver a blazing-fast multiple gigabytes per second.

NVMe is the storage technology of choice for DirectStorage and high-performance next generation gaming IO.

yeah I got some tips

0) make sure your workspace is a hard flat surface, preferably wood or stone (DO NOT use a staticky plastic table -- it could be fine, but why risk it?), and make sure you have room to move around it, or if you're big enough, to pick up and move the case around to see things from all angles

1) open everything and make sure it's in good condition before you start assembling anything. check for screws and motherboard standoffs with the case, make sure the PSU isn't bent in or damaged, make sure you have all your PSU wires, etc etc

2) install the power supply first, and route the necessary wires where you will need them

3) go ahead and install the CPU and RAM into the motherboard before you install the motherboard into the case. you can install the CPU cooler if it's a stock cooler but if it is a bigass tower cooler or CLC then wait until you get the board mounted in the case

4) connect all wires to mainboard after installing it to the case but before installing anything else to it (bigass CPU cooler, video card, etc)

5) AFTER you get the machine reliably booting but BEFORE you install Windows, disable the Legacy Compatibility Support Module (CSM) to force UEFI booting -- don't enable XMP until after you get your OS installed

6) if you are using Windows, download GPU drivers to a flash drive or your phone and install them before you connect the internet

7) if you want to avoid a lot of headaches with windows, don't use:
virtualization-based security
microsoft account (stick with local account, you can do this even in win11)
bitlocker or other drive encryption
any antivirus including windows defender
exploit protection
user account control

you don't need any of these things, they are for faggots

just turn it off altogether. heuristics will never catch anything real, all false positives, and profile-based detection can only protect you from threats that it knows about, which are easily avoided

DRAM cache is only a big deal for old, slow SATA SSDs. I think NVMe 4.0 doesn't need it. At least for gaming. I just want something that will complement the new Direct Storage system that links the GPU and SSD together.

yes, absolutely -- the PCIe bus interface only defines the maximum transfer rate, it has nothing to do with random transfers, which is what the DRAM cache helps with

NAND is still actually quite slow in terms of latency compared to DRAM, more than 3 orders of magnitude slower for even the fastest NAND out there, and it's these random transfers that are the most important performance characteristic for any storage device you run applications from

go grab crystaldiskmark and run a 4K random read test with queue depth 1 and 1 thread -- that's your 'real world' speed test for SSDs. any other speed test is bullshit

>>88027014
not exactly -- threadripper and EPYC have always been LGA -- but new for AMD desktop, yeah
>>
>>88027078
So would a 3.0 with dram cache be better than a 4.0 without?
>>
>>88027078
These guys are saying NVMe drives can devote part of themselves to SLC caching. Is that a proper replacement for dram cache? IDK shit about SSDs.

https://linustechtips.com/topic/1190846-why-are-most-m2-nvme-ssds-without-dram-cache/

Most of them use SLC caching. Meaning a portion of the SSD is not running in the (relatively) slower TLC/QLC format, but rather in SLC.

How large your SLC cache is depends on how much of the SSD you are using currently.
>>
>>88027103
that depends on a lot of factors, but specifically for application launching and boot times, it is extremely likely to be the case, yes
>>
>>88027138
yes, SLC caching is a thing, but it still can't overcome the high access latency of NAND flash relative to DRAM; it's not a replacement for a DRAM cache -- nevermind the fact that you cant USE SLC caching when the drive is over 50% full, lol

DRAM cache also helps preserve the durability of the SSD because less accesses hit the NAND

https://www.techpowerup.com/review/wd-black-sn770-1-tb/17.html

Good that we also do extensive real-life testing with actual applications (not disk traces) and the drive at 80% full, which is much harder to optimize for. Here, the WD Black SN770 achieves unbelievable results that match or exceed the more expensive and higher-positioned WD Black SN850, Samsung 980 Pro, and Kingston KC3000. In the match-up SN850 vs. SN770, the SN770 does have a little bit of a hardware advantage because it uses faster 112-layer flash, whereas the SN850 uses the slower 96-layer NAND, which apparently is enough to make up for the lack of DRAM, and the 4-channel interface. Another important win is that the SN770 beats the DRAM-less Samsung 980 non-Pro by 4%, and the best PCIe 3.0 drives are 3-5% behind. Once again, the SN770 is a DRAM-less SSD design, which usually have terrible random write performance, especially when the writes are spread over a larger area, which is due to the DRAM-cache being emulated in flash, which is much slower. Seems WD figured out a magic bullet to overcome this problem. If you showed me the real-life performance results of the SN770, there's no way I'd come to the conclusion that this is a DRAM-less drive.

We dug deeper and specifically tested random write performance across a wide range of sizes and uncovered that the SN770 barely loses much performance with a larger data area—it's almost like magic. What's astonishing is just how much better WD's algorithms work—300K IOPS in a test where other DRAM-less drives get 30K IOPS, so 10x as high—no wonder this drive is fast. I only wish everybody could learn more about the secret sauce and license it for their own controllers—it would start a revolution for SSDs, making DRAM cache chips obsolete for all but the most high-end designs. However, I'm quite positive that WD is keeping this a closely guarded secret, so they can sell more of their own product, which is well-deserved, of course

the short answer is no, not right now, but it may not always be that way

write _latency_ absolutely can affect frame pacing in games like Elden Ring where the game is constantly overwriting your save

but Unreal Engine 5 is also bringing back virtual texturing, which id software called "megatexture", and that game typically used a texture cache which it was constantly updating—that game's textures were low-enough resolution that it worked even on the PS3 HDD, but future UE5 games may want faster SSDs, particularly in terms of latency

it's also possible that people might, y'know, copy games around, or just move files around—I sure prefer when my files copy between SSDs at > 2GB/sec and not sub-SATA speeds
